Night racing continues at Canterbury on Friday night. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (18:00) Drinkwise Dmn Plate 1250m
4 Robusto (Bet Now: $1.65) is a Churchill colt for Chris Waller that is first up here. Well bred colt that debuted during the Spring at Flemington down the straight and worked to the line pretty well behind Get In The Spirit, finishing fourth. Trialled up well enough to my eye and this is a very winnable race.
5 Sandpaper (Bet Now: $6.00) is an interesting runner. James Cummings trained colt that is on debut off the back of two trials. First trial he was trucking and moved nicely. The Rosehill trial saw him wear Blinkers and he wanted to do plenty wrong but the last few strides, he switched on and hit the line with real purpose. Keen to see how he goes.
6 A Lot More Love (Bet Now: $8.00) is a daughter of Sebring for the Ryan/Alexiou camp that is having start one. She hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in her two trials to get ready, but you do have to respect the stable with their juveniles and the small field helps his cause.
Race 2. (18:30) Ranvet Mdn Hcp 1250m
I’m with 4 California Surreal (Bet Now: $1.95), who resumes for Team Snowden. This girl hasn’t raced since September 29 when a game third on the Kenso track after sitting near the speed, getting keen in the run and tiring late. Trialled up super to the eye at Rosehill, albeit the time was ordinary relative to the morning. But I think you have to trust what you saw.
1 Solvere (Bet Now: $3.80) is the main threat. He has placed in both career outings, the latest coming at Canterbury when on speed and tried hard but couldn’t hold out Sneaky Shark, with a big gap to third. He was a few weeks between runs last time so you’d like to think there is improvement to come.
3 Nickelback (Bet Now: $13.00) is big odds here I feel. Debuted at Gosford on testing ground and I think that definitely saw his wheels spin when Tommy Berry asked for the effort. He did have a $2 SP and is double figures here, so if you are an SP profile fan, you will like this horse.
Race 3. (19:00) Acy Securities Mdn Hcp 1550m
I think Chris Waller wins the race. Just a matter of finding the right one. I think 1 Inuwashi (Bet Now: $4.40) is the one. Debuted on the Beaumont track at Newcastle on Boxing Day and closed off powerfully from near last to finish a close up third. Time was solid and already three winners have come out of it. Fitter, up to 1550m, he’s hard to beat.
6 Pretes (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Zoustar filly who debuted at the midweeks at Warwick Farm. She looked a bit raw and new to the caper when initially asked for the effort but I liked the way she picked up very late in the piece. Like her up to 1550m and is there a lead that J Mac rides this girl?
4 Tailoring (Bet Now: $8.00) will put himself on speed and try hard. That was the case last time out when contesting a 2000m maiden on the Beaumont track at Newcastle. He led and battled on gamely in defeat to finish third. I think if he’s to win, he needs to make it a truly run 1550m from the front.
Race 4. (19:30) The Agency Real Estate (bm72) 1550m
6 Fiordland (Bet Now: $2.80) looks hard to beat here and has upside/progression for the Waller camp. Ran over 1500m at Rosehill last time out when near the speed throughout and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Caesars Palace. Gets run of the race from the draw and only runs well.
4 Maccomo (Bet Now: $3.30) is on the seven day back up for Joe Pride after racing here last Friday night where he attempted to lead throughout and he did give a good kick but just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Glamour Fox. Tricky gate on paper, but has the early speed to take care of that and run a bold race.
1 Awesome Lad (Bet Now: $7.50) looks well placed back to this level. Just found the class a bit rich at Rosehill last time when down the track behind O’Mudgee after sitting near the speed. Reckon back to this sort of grade and with a more conservative steer, an improved showing is on the cards.
Race 5. (20:00) Xxxx (bm72) 1900m
Good test here for 2 Athena’s Lad (Bet Now: $5.00) but he is absolutely flying at the moment. He would have been on the podium for good thing beat of 2022 in the Cowra Cup but he got the split and drove hard late to win. There is a question mark on some of these, but he’s a horse that is in form.
1 Fortified (Bet Now: $3.90) has more upside than most and I thought the resumption was more than encouraging. That came over the mile at Warwick Farm where he got a fair way back in the run but closed off nicely behind Marnix, who won again on Wednesday, so the form has been ticked off and gets J Mac.
9 Josephus (Bet Now: $7.00) is bursting to win a race for Gwenda Markwell. I was keen on him at Nowra last time and he looked the winner when he kicked clear, but couldn’t hold out the finale of Clear Blonde. I think he runs well again. Not sure he wins, but one for multiples.
Race 6. (20:30) Kia Shooting Star (bm72) 1250m
I’ve got a bit of time for 6 Texcel (Bet Now: $3.50) and I think he can resume a winner for the Maher/Eustace camp. He hasn’t raced since August 14 when racing over the mile at Goulburn. Almost defied a notable betting drift but was nabbed late. Has trialled up quite well leading in and should get a lovely run from the gate.
4 Finally Realise (Bet Now: $3.50) has the strong form lines to take this out. He has had two runs back from a spell, both in Midway races, the latest being two weeks ago when close up in defeat behind Crosscheck. Back to this level, if he gets into a decent spot from the tricky draw, he’ll take beating.
2 Diamonds’n’stones (Bet Now: $8.50) is a son of Brazen Beau for Team Hawkes that resumes. Hasn’t raced since September 22 when on speed and tiring badly late behind Excelida, who has since been Stakes performed. No public trials in Sydney, but has had two jumpouts in Melbourne, so interesting placement here. Watch the market.
Race 7. (21:00) First Justify Yearlings (bm72) 1100m
2 Able Willie (Bet Now: $2.80) looks to have quality and I think he can get a kill here before going back up to Stakes grade. Won with arrogance on debut on the Kenso track before getting way too keen in the Brian Crowley when third to Mazu. He has been keen in both trials, so that’s a concern, but he has enormous upside, class and quality to overcome that and win.
Back to 1100m I do like for 4 Sky Command (Bet Now: $4.60). The 1200m was a bridge too far for her fresh in the Midway at Rosehill when tiring late behind Crosscheck. To me, she seems a short course horse, so 1100m around at Canterbury should be a good set up and she gets Blinkers/J Mac first time.
No shock at all there has been early specking for 5 What Could Be (Bet Now: $31.00) and I’ll be having something on him too. Was with him at the big odds here first up due to a dry track and the strong tempo and thankfully it played out that way. He’ll get a similar set up here again, so he’s right in the mix.
Race 8. (21:30) Buy [email protected] Classic-bm72 1250m
13 Twice As Special (Bet Now: $10.00) isn’t a reliable mare in terms of winning, but I do think she is racing well. Good late at Warwick Farm two back behind Broken Arrows before going to Rosehill in a Midway where she was well tried late but had no luck in the straight behind Crosscheck. Gets a suck run from the gate and if the breaks go her way, I think she can be dangerous.
3 Accelerato (Bet Now: $4.80) has been quite good in two runs back from a break and should just about be ready re fitness. Both runs have come here, the latest being last Friday night when good late without threatening behind Bugalugs. Up to 1250m now, he’ll take beating.
If the old 1 Bergen (Bet Now: $14.00) turned up here, he would spank them. Just hasn’t shown it in some time but he does like Canterbury , this distance range and is a dry track horse, so he ticks a few boxes. Tricky draw to overcome, but he did look sharp in a recent trial win, so keen to see how he goes.
