Blacktype racing returns to Morphettville this Saturday where it is Lightning Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:41) AAMI Hurdle 3100m
If this track can remain to have some give and not be genuinely wet, then I’m keen on 6 Jumbo Prince (Bet Now: $8.00). Was on him at odds at Gawler (Metro) two weeks ago where he looked to travel well, with his flat speed being quite evident, but just the last little bit he couldn’t quite go on with it at his jumps debut. Think he’ll take good improvement from that and happy to butter up again.
2 Youl Dash For Cash (Bet Now: $2.60) is in a purple patch for Eric Musgrove and stable has had good success recently when bring runners to SA. This bloke has won his past two, both over the hurdles at Warrnambool and each time he has been impressive in races which looked to have a bit of depth. Harder here, but can’t knock a winner and stable is having a good run.
4 Tangara (Bet Now: $19.00) is hard fit for Eric Musgrove. He fell at the first jump at Gawler (Metro) two back so a total forgive there. He then contested a strong hurdle race at Pakenham on Sunday and was far from disgraced behind a strong kiwk stayer in Gobstopper. Back to this sort of level I like and we saw three back at Gawler that with the right run he can win this kind of race.
Race 2. (13:16) Heineken 3 Handicap (82) 1800m
6 Canford (Bet Now: $6.00) should appreciate the step up to the 1800m. He ran over 1500m at Gawler (Metro) two weeks ago and it was a funny run by him. On the turn, it looked as if he’d finish tailed off last, but the last 200m, he picked the bit up and charged late to run third, beaten 10 lengths, by Charossa. Better suited here I think and looks one of the hardest to beat.
Can 3 Charossa (Bet Now: $1.95) go on with it? He’s consistently run well…consistently winning is another thing. But he comes here in winning form having bolted up at Gawler (Metro) two weeks ago, aided by a 12/10 steer by Stubby, who rode a positive race and got the horse into the dream spot near the speed before angling clear and he put them away rather quickly. 1800m should be fine and is a key threat.
I think firmer footing will help the Patrick Payne trained mare 4 Casa De Lago (Bet Now: $5.00). Won impressively at Warrnambool three back before being close up at Sandown, running third. She then raced at Cranbourne last Wednesday where she was a notable drifter in betting and ran accordingly when midfield behind Moscow Red. Was 2100-1600 that day, so back up to 1800m, she can improve.
Race 3. (13:51) WH Benson Memorial Handicap 1050m
3 Deep Force (Bet Now: $1.55) on top. Tony McEvoy trains this son of Deep Field, who is on debut off the back of two jumpouts at Flemington, the latest being on June 7 at Flemington where he was one of the standout performers of the morning. Loved the way he went about his business in winning his trial in good time. He then trialled at Murray Bridge where he led all the way, dashed right away late and made the Group l placed Free Of Debt look second rate. He looks blacktype quality so confident he can debut with a win.
2 Bastyan (Bet Now: $8.50) is the interesting runner. Patrick Payne trains this son of Charge Forward, who was very brave on debut at Donald when wide no cover for the trip, finishing third. Then found a really thin Mildura maiden and under Todd Pannell, he was just far too good for them. Think there is a bit of depth to this contest, but I reckon he might be pretty good.
1 Magic Phantom (Bet Now: $9.00) has hard race experience on his side and winning experience too. He ran over 1100m at Gawler (Metro) two weeks ago where he looked in a bit of trouble at stages but he picked up, surged hard late and nabbed Grinzinger Express near the peg. Back to 1050m is a little worry, because I think 1200m would be ideal, but nonetheless, he’s respected.
Race 4. (14:31) Metal-Link Handicap (90) 1200m
4 Arrow Lane (Bet Now: $2.80) landed some big bts when winning at Gawler (Metro) two weeks ago, leading throughout under the ‘Fawke Lift’ and was much too good in leading all the way, landing the plunge after opening $12 and starting $4.20. Looks little on speed pressure once again, so if similar tactics to last time are adopted, he’ll lead again and prove hard to run down again.
5 Beautiful Flyer (Bet Now: $3.20) is flying at the moment for Len Jarvis stable. This mare put together a couple of sharp wins on the bounce, which saw the stable send her to Caulfield and she was super in defeat, running a close up second to the well performed Miss Vixen. That reads quite well for this and back home, gee I think she’ll take some beating against this lot.
Been a while between wins for 8 Nipperkin (Bet Now: $8.50) but she’s ticking over okay. She ran over 1200m at Gawler (Metro) two weeks ago where she sat three and four wide no cover for the trip but despite that stuck to the task pretty well in defeat when fourth to Arrow Lane, beaten 2.4L. With better luck this time around, she’ll run well again…could I back her to win? Probably not.
Race 5. (15:11) Medallion Homes Handicap (75) 1050m
2 Irish Mint (Bet Now: $5.50) looks really hard to beat here. This Team Jolly trained gelding has run at this track/distance at his past two, winning two back before being tardy away three weeks ago, which sealed his fate. To get as close as he did was one of the runs of the day I thought, so with a clean jump this time around, I think he will take a power of beating against this lot.
5 Nodoubtaboutit (Bet Now: $3.90) is a Good Journey mare for Phillip Stokes that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since March 16 on the Parks track when running third to Lucky Flipper, with the poor start costing her dearly. She’s a really good fresh horse and really liked the way she looked in a recent Murray Bridge trial. With a good speed expected, she can sit off it and finish hard late.
10 Tiara Star (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Will Clarken trained mare that is first up, having not raced since March 30 over 1050m here where Pannell gave her a lovely steer, wide with cover, before blending in at the right and she looked the winner, but was bloused near the peg by Alaskan Jade. Normally gets better as the prep gets deeper, but her recent Murray Bridge trial was quite good.
Race 6. (15:51) Barossa Fine Foods Handicap (70) 1600m
5 Supreme Harmony (Bet Now: $3.80) is having a career best prep for Archie Alexander. This gelding got well back in the run last time out at Bendigo but Thomas Stockdale knew what he had underneath, peeling wide and finishing off strongly to get the job done impressively, his third win for the campaign. The run three back behind Dogmatic does read well for a race of this quality.
Been a while since 8 Skillful Steps (Bet Now: $3.20) has won but this Team Jolly trained galloper hasn’t been far away of late. Last run came over 1800m here three weeks ago where the stop/start set up of the race didn’t really suit but he stuck to the task and was solid in defeat behind Street Sheik. Looks a drop in depth for this gelding and I like him back to the mile.
11 Double Pockets (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing in near career best form at the moment for the Sue Nolan stable. Broke a long run of outs when winning at Gawler before racing there again at the metro meet a fortnight back where he attempted to lead all the way and he gave a reasonable kick but Charossa was just far too good for him. Beat the rest comfortably. Keen to see if he can translate this form to the metro track.
Race 7. (16:31) Lightning Stakes 1050m
I’m keen to see how 4 Assertive Approach (Bet Now: $3.60) measures up. Looks one exciting prospect for Team Hawkes that is 2/2 to start his career. Debuted in February at Bendigo when on speed and fighting on strongly to win. Spelled, and resumed at Sandown where he led and bolted up, winning by a space despite not being fully extended and ran clearly the fastest time across four 1000m races for the meeting. Recent jumpout was very good…I think he’s Stakes class. Hopefully confirms it here.
Really interesting runner is 1 Behemoth (Bet Now: $2.50) for David Jolly. I say interesting because how will he go heading into his 4YO season. Last run was in the Goodwood and I think it’s safe to say that with clear air, he wins the race, instead of just missing out on picking up Despatch. Did what was expected in the Murray Bridge trial, he’s raw, still new to the caper, but clearly has the engine of a really good horse under the hood. Is he sharp enough to win over 1050m?
8 Exalted Maxine (Bet Now: $71.00) is a beauty for Grant Young who just gives her all each time she steps out. Kicked up and used the inside gate to lead last time out at Gawler (Metro) where she made the hot pot Wanaasa work, which in turn gave Kemalpasa the perfect drag up and his class came to the fore late. She likely leads this field up and will give them something to chase. Class the obvious query.
Race 8. (17:10) Table & Chair Company Handicap (70) 2000m
2 Hostar (Bet Now: $2.90) is racing really well this time in for Peter Chow and I think he can take this out. His last couple of runs have come over 1800m at Sandown, winning two back before getting well back and finishing off hard to run third to Captain Harry. He’s flying this horse and up to 2000m looks a good move and he finds a really winnable if he brings his Victorian form over.
3 Bronski (Bet Now: $6.00) is three weeks between runs for Sue Jaensch since racing over 1800m here where he got the good run just off the speed and tried hard, but just didn’t have the turn of foot to go with the eventual winner Street Sheik and had to settle for second. Like him up to 2000m and stable doesn’t bring them to town for a sight seeing exploration. Hard to beat.
13 Busker’s Ballad (Bet Now: $9.50) is racing in okay form for Ryan Balfour. He was good two back behind More Than Ever, which made him an odds on pop in a Class One/Maiden last Wednesday at Balaklava but he looked to really struggle when asked for the effort, perhaps bogged down by the weight, only managing third to Vacant Block. Off the run two back, he’s in the mix.
