The Adelaide Racing Carnival continues on both the Parks track and course proper at Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit on the Parks track. Rail is out eight metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out two metres from the 2000m-1800m; Out four metres for the remainder. Note that races one and eight will be run on the course proper.
Race 1. (12:51) Breeders Stakes 1200m
3 Kooweerup (Bet Now: $3.00) on top for me. This Maher/Eustace trained youngster looked very good at the jumpouts prior to debuting at Sandown where she was back in the ruck and took a while to get into her work but loved the way she attacked the line to grab the win in the last couple of strides. Off that, no dramas with 1200m and she might just be above average and better than these.
6 Ethical Solution (Bet Now: $8.50) is a really interesting runner. Daughter of Shamus Award on debut for the in form Will Clarken stable. I find this girl interesting because she was down to run in a much easier race at Oakbank on Monday but instead debuts in a Stakes race, a good sign of confidence from the stable, and her trial a couple of weeks ago was very good to the eye.
2 Shifty Shamus (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Matt Laurie trained youngster who had specking when debuting at Echuca and that little bit of support was justified as he sat on speed, looked to travel and then when clicked up, he drew clear and was most impressive, beating a horse who won impressively at Ballarat on Tuesday, so the form has been franked. Lands in front and will be hard to run down.
Race 2. (13:26) TAB Handicap (70) 1000m
1 Equal Love (Bet Now: $2.40) has done a fab job this time in for Phillip Stokes, winning her first three runs for the prep before racing over this track/distance when wide no cover and sticking on well in a very game effort to run second to Parsifal. Not sure how much upside is left with her, but did dodge the Oakbank Carnival in preference for this race meeting, which could be a good lead.
4 Gotta Be Gold (Bet Now: $4.00) is next best by process of elimination. She attempted to lead all the way in the Redelva last time out and fought hard but the class just found her out late when fourth to Humma Humma. Like her back to 1000m at this level and from the gate, I suspect she’ll find the lead rather comfortably and on this track, that can be dangerous for rivals.
Race 3. (14:01) Pauline Nutt's Celebration Handicap (70) 1400m
2 Vinland (Bet Now: $3.70) on top. Tony McEvoy trains this three year old, who resumed at Pakenham when back and closing off hard, hitting the front, but had no answers for the finale produced by Bea Tempted. He does seem to be a horse who races best early on in a prep, and though he might want a tad further than 1400m now, he’s got a touch of class/quality.
7 Shrouded (Bet Now: $7.00) In Mist looks the best horse in the race and confident she can show that off here. She had four runs in the Spring/Summer where she won two races, including a dominant first up win at Geelong. Really liked the way she trialled last week at Morphettville and her best efforts do come early on in the prep. Finds a winnable race, hard to beat.
14 Ambertone (Bet Now: $67.00) returns back home after racing at Ballarat in what looked a handy mares race and I thought she was far from disgraced when fifth to Lady Vega in a race where the form has been franked. Was really good over the 1250m here the start prior and I think the way she’s hit the line her past couple, the rise to 1400m should suit her and is one for exotics.
Race 4. (14:41) Julie Hayes & Pat Duffy Handicap (82) 1300m
Buttering up on the Andrew Payne trained 12 Private Lounge (Bet Now: $7.00). She had no hope of winning last time out over 1200m on the course proper given they walked in front, but she produced some of the best late splits of the day in a very good effort to run third to Scottish Rogue. Up to 1300m will be perfect for her and just needs a genuine tempo to go close to winning.
9 Debt Collector (Bet Now: $3.20) is a Stuart Padman trained galloper who was hard in the market when resuming over 1050m at Morphettville where he got back, presented to the outside and loomed but his condition just gave way when third to Gytrash. Suited big time up in trip for mine and does have a really good record on the Parks track. One of the leading chances.
6 Artie Dee Two (Bet Now: $18.00) is third up now for the Mitch Freedman stable so he should just about be ready. Ran over 1200m at Terang last time out on a day where the track played quite funny and for mine, I’d just put a line through the run behind the in form Indian Thunder. He is a winner at this track/distance and does have a good third up record. Can bounce back for sure.
Race 5. (15:21) Murray & Barb Stewart's 61st Anniversary Handicap (82) 1000m
Looks pretty straight forward here with 7 Gytrash (Bet Now: $2.00). Gordon Richards trains this three year old, who was confidently supported at various stages when resuming over the 1050m on the course proper here and despite a few nervous moments getting clear air, he sprinted hard and won with a bit in hand. Good test here against some quality types, but confident he gets the job done again.
2 Easy Beast (Bet Now: $9.00) is in a real purple patch at the moment for the Richard Laming stable. Ran over 1200m on the course proper last time out when on speed and for mine, he had his chance when second to Scottish Rogue, just being outsprinted I felt. Maskiell back on, I think he’ll make this a truly run 1000m contest and that sort of racing pattern suits this track.
Not sure what to make of 6 Split Lip (Bet Now: $11.00), who is back with Will Clarken after a stint with Darren Weir. Resumed in the Gytrash race where she was wide with cover but couldn’t really get into the race behind the three year old in a somewhat forgiving run. She can beat these if she produces something near her best…just been a while since she has shown that.
Race 6. (16:01) City Of Adelaide Handicap 1400m
Might need one more run but each way, I think 5 Hussybay (Bet Now: $6.00) is worth a throw at the stumps. He resumed in the Irwin, a race which was totally suited to those near the speed, and when they’re running 33.5 L600m, he just had no chance of winning. Has a good record on the Parks track, extra trip suits even though he might want one more run. Just hoping the tempo is genuine.
8 Set To Sparkle (Bet Now: $2.70) looks one of the hardest to beat. This mare was a few weeks between runs when racing over 1300m here three weeks ago when given a lovely sit just near the speed before being clicked up from Vorster and the mare found plenty, drawing clear late to win impressively. Harder here, but the way she’s going, she’s earned a crack at this kind of race.
10 Diapason (Bet Now: $10.00) is a daughter of Shocking who has returned in excellent order for Will Clarken. Lovely ride from Pannell saw her win two back here before lumping 58.5kg at this track/distance two weeks ago when a closing and close up third to surprise winner Vegas Boulevard. Gets good weight relief this time around and the way the stable is going, a win wouldn’t shock.
Race 7. (16:41) H C Nitschke Stakes 1400m
Like 3 Crockett (Bet Now: $14.00) here. Was unwanted in betting when resuming over 1250m here when with punters thinking he’d need the run and to an extent, they were right, but his effort from the back was very good when second to Won Ball. Think up to 1400m will really suit this Tony McEvoy runner and back to his own age, he looks one of the hardest to beat.
What to make of the John Macmillan trained 4 Aiguilette (Bet Now: $6.00). He’s 2/2 to start his career, both coming on the Parks track. Debut win over 1250m was impressive before stepping up 50m in trip and he was even more impressive the way he finished off, so up to 1400m looks only further ideal, and you don’t know how good they are until they’re beaten.
11 Aristocratic Miss (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Tony McEvoy trained filly who resumed over 1300m here three weeks ago where she got well off them in the run but despite that, Vorster gave her a sweet ride to get her into the race and she loomed large but her condition just gave out late when third to Aiguilette. Up to 1400m with fitness now under the belt, she certainly appeals.
Race 8. (17:20) Chairmans Stakes 2032m
2 Classic Weiwei (Bet Now: $5.00) has been very good to me this time in and I ain’t dropping off. Too good first up in a Balaklava maiden, hit the lead far too early at Gawler when beating the older horses, then went to the Port Adelaide Guineas where he was nearer the inside and seemingly in a tricky spot but he kept surging under Vorster and got the win right on the peg. Can only see improvement off that and I’ll stick with him.
1 Declarationofheart (Bet Now: $2.45) will appreciate the step back in trip and getting back on top of the ground, plus a more genuine tempo. Was keen on him in the Australian Derby but nothing really went right. The wet track wasn’t his go but the big thing is that Angel Of Truth walked them in front and just had the race run to suit himself. Declarationofheart is a talent. What upside is left.
4 Star Missile (Bet Now: $5.50) steps up to the 2000m for the Greg Eurell stable after racing over the mile three weeks ago where he got back, wide with cover, and loomed to win but just found a couple too good in Grinzinger Star and Mr Quickie, with already a few winners to come from that race, including the winner. Racing as if he wants 2000m and he gets it here. Leading chance.
