Metro racing in Queensland this Saturday heads to the Sunshine Coast where it is Sunshine Coast Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:55) Coastline BMW M40i Handicap 2400m
6 The Rumour File (Bet Now: $7.50) for me. This bloke has really turned the corner since coming to Queensland and is racing with much more consistency to the horse that was racing in Sydney. Ran over 2200m at the Gold Coast three weeks back where I thought Jim Byrne gave the horse every chance but no match late for Endless Days. 2400m a query, but gets really good weight relief.
1 Tumultuous (Bet Now: $3.90) is a Chris Waller trained galloper who was given such a sweet ride by Avdulla to win the Magic Millions Trophy at the Gold Coast, nailing Sedanzer right on the peg. I just worry that the win was flattering because I thought it was largely the ride that got him the win. Still, that’s a very strong form line.
3 Kaiser Franz (Bet Now: $19.00) could be the sleeper here. He drops a fair bit in depth after contesting the Shoot Out where he was on speed and was just outclassed behind Singing, who franked the form by winning the Gosford Cup. He’s hard to trust, but he saves his best for the Sunny Coast and this is the sort o race he could easily bob up in.
Race 2. (13:27) Coastline BMW M2 Handicap 1600m
Pretty keen here on 5 Francisca (Bet Now: $3.60) from the O’Dea camp. Her run a tick over a fortnight back at Doomben over the 1350m was enormous. There was mad bias towards those on speed/rail yet she came wide from the back to run a very game third. She’ll have no troubles with the mile and looks one of the better bets on the card.
2 Cruze (Bet Now: $3.50) is on the quick back up for the Barry Lockwood stable after racing at Doomben last Saturday where the market went very cold on him late and they got it right as he struggled to dash when third to Bat A Kat. That form reads very well for this and I think that last start indicated he was looking for more ground.
7 Conquering Lass (Bet Now: $12.00) quickly rises in trip but she looks to have a decent engine. Ran over the 1200m at Ipwsich last Wednesday and made up a tremendous amount of ground to run third to impressive winner Absolutelypositivly. Really keen to see her at the mile because she does look well above average.
Race 3. (14:02) Coastline BMW 4 Series Plate (Class 3) 1600m
6 Savwell (Bet Now: $4.50) looks an above average type for the David Vandyke stable who looks a potential blacktype performer so with that being the case, I’m pretty confident he can get the job done. Not sure he beat much last time out at Doomben but the manner in which he did it was that of a really nice horse going places. He’ll eat up the mile here.
3 Hetuka Zarsho (Bet Now: $26.00) is a bludger, the screws upstairs aren’t on tight, but despite all that, he can win this. Ipswich run was enormous. Clearly not his track yet still savaged the line to run a narrow and unlucky fourth. The Sunny Coast mile looks perfect for him and he does have a bit of upside left I’m sure.
13 Godzone Girl (Bet Now: $21.00) is a mare who has really turned the corner in recent times for the Barry Lockwood team. Made up really good ground against the track pattern two back at Lismore before racing at the Doomben mile where she landed some nice bets at odds, aided by a peach from in form hoop Ric McMahon. Confident she can measure up here.
Race 4. (14:37) Coastline BMW 3 Series 2YO Classic 1200m
1 Hopes Eternal (Bet Now: $2.50) comes through the BJ McLachlan on December 30 at Doomben where I thought he did a huge job to run second to Meryl after getting a mile back in the run on a day where it was a definite advantage to be up on speed. 1200m on the big track looks perfect and he’ll be charging late.
7 Sizzling Ace (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Toby Edmonds trained youngster who has had two career outings, both of which were at blacktype level to try and get into the Magic Millions but couldn’t succeed in doing so. Trialled up last week at the Gold Coast and looked to go very nicely to the eye. Think she’ll like the 1200m of Caloundra.
2 King Of The North (Bet Now: $9.50) a definite threat for me. Mick Mair trains this youngster, who did a really good job to win last time out at Ipswich to my eye. He poured the pressure on outside the speed and was there to be beaten but he found plenty under Tay Williams and was strongest on the line. Hoping he can get a cheap lead. If he gets a soft sectional, he’ll take some running down.
Race 5. (15:12) Coastline BMW 5 Series Handicap (Class 6) 1000m
8 Invincible Heart (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Chris Meagher trained mare who should take some beating here after a couple of nice runs over the Gold Coast 900m to kick off the prep, the latest coming three weeks ago when just outgunned late by the well backed Licitra. Up to 1000m looks ideal and should be hard fit, so no excuses.
1 Colinelle (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented sprinter for the Steve O’Dea team who is just finding it hard to win. He attempted to lead all the way over the 1110m at Doomben last time out and gave a good kick but just died on the run when a narrow third to Just Orm. Really good record on the fresh side and loves racing here.
If they go hard in front, look for 2 Denarius (Bet Now: $31.00) to swoop on them late. 1000m is short of his ideal trip but he will be very strong late. It is a poor racing style that will give him bore bad luck than good, but it’s hard to get bad luck here at the Sunny Coast and his recent Doomben trial was very good to the eye.
Race 6. (15:52) Coastline BMW i3 Handicap 1000m
This looks one of the best race across Australia on Saturday, with several potential and proven blacktype performers running. The pick of them looks to be 7 Showus Ya Diamonds (Bet Now: $3.00), a brilliant running type for the Barry Lockwood team. She’s two for two to kick off her career. Debuted with an outstanding win at Doomben before being freshened up and running here where she faced four rivals and bolted up. This will be a good test, but hard to ignore what she’s done.
4 Winter Bride (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented daughter of Not A Single Doubt for Segenhoe and Toby Edmonds. This girl hasn’t raced since December 2 in the Mode Plate at Doomben when placing behind the above average Pretty Fast. Back to 1000m is a little concern, but in terms of quality, she’s right up there and has to be considered.
2 Wonder Boom (Bet Now: $35.00) is a Paul Butterworth trained three year old that is first up here. This bloke had a pretty solid Winter/Spring campaign, highlighted by wins at Rocky and Ipswich. Goes well first up and to my eye the trial at Doomben a couple of weeks back was very sharp to the eye. Expecting him to run well.
Race 7. (16:32) Coastline BMW X1 Handicap (75) 1200m
4 Prioritise (Bet Now: $2.60) was heavily backed last Saturday at Doomben and if you were on, it was a rather painful watch, largely due to the poor ride from Larry Cassidy who didn’t give the four year old much hope. Draws out this time so surely he’ll get clear running and he does have a liking for the Sunny Coast.
13 Nilette (Bet Now: $2.80) looks the key and perhaps only threat to the top tip. This bloke ran over 1200m at the Gold Coast three weeks back and tried very hard as she always does when nabbed late by Don’t Deny Us. Has a really good record at the Sunshine Coast, draws well, down in the weights…ticks the boxes.
1 Cornrow (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Team Hulbert trained six year old who is first up here. He can be a bit hit and miss at times but under the right conditions, he can win this for sure. He has a really good record fresh and hasn’t trialled for his resumption, so stable are keeping their cards close to the chest. Definite yard/market watch.
Race 8. (17:12) Coastline BMW 2 Series Handicap (75) 1200m
10 I’ve Gotta Nel (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented galloper for Toby Edmonds who had really good market support when racing at the Gold Coast three weeks back where he attempted to lead all the way under Jeff Lloyd and he gave a good kick but didn’t see it out when fourth to I’ve Gotta Nel. Unbeaten in two runs here.
5 Barnsley (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Gary Duncan trained galloper who didn’t do a great deal first up before going to Ipswich where he did all the work on speed yet fought them off and stuck on for a rather courageous win. Does tend to save his best for his home track and the good lead here is that Damian Browne rides.
11 Media Via (Bet Now: $16.00) is a very interesting runner. Gelding that was formerly based in Canberra but is now in Rockhampton with Jamie McConachy and the fact he comes to the metro level fresh for the new stable is a lead perhaps. Form around him in the nations capital does read well and stable rarely come to town unless they have a winning chance.
Race 9. (17:47) Coastline BMW Sunshine Coast Cup 1400m
I’ll bank on Godolphin having 6 Farolitos (Bet Now: $13.00) ready to win first up. Talented galloper who hasn’t raced since July 2016 when winning a couple of races on the bounce. Been brought up to fitness for his return with a couple of sharp barrier trials, both in good time. On his best, he wins. Market will be the guide.
1 Most Important (Bet Now: $6.50) is a quality animal for the Tony Gollan camp who drops a fair bit in depth after contesting the Magic Millions Cup where he worked home well from the back to run fourth to the rising star that is Care To Think. That horse ain’t here and I think More Important will love the spacious surroundings the Gold Coast has to offer.
4 Invinzabeel (Bet Now: $9.50) strung together a couple of surprise wins in Sydney before a couple of flops, the latest coming in the Magic Millions Cup behind Care To Think. The trips away for these older horses can often spark them into life and I think the trip away to Caloundra could well give him a boost. Definite for multiples.
Race 10. (18:27) Coastline BMW All New X3 Handicap (0MW) 1400m
6 Clockwork Orange (Bet Now: $3.00) is a talented mare for the Toby Edmonds stable who was an alarming drifter in betting last time out at the Doomben midweeks but with some help from a Jeff Lloyd peach, the mare toughed it out strongly on speed and got the win. Good record here and should be hard fit.
11 Rhyming (Bet Now: $7.00) rises in grade and depth but she ahs found some winning form now after winning on her home track at Toowoomba last time out, aided by a peach from Tomizawa. Has won here before at the Sunshine Coast and if you go back through her form, she ran second to Care To Think. Reads so well.
10 Dapper One (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Les Ross trained mare who is going really well at the moment and should be forgiven for her last start failure at Doomben last Saturday. Just think Tarrant rode the mare upside down when attempting to lead all the way when tiring late to run fifth to Desmon’s Pride. With a sit, she can be more dynamic.
