A solid eight race card has been assembled for Ascot this Saturday, and while there are no feature races, the depth looks okay post the Summer Carnival. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:44) Vale Denis Williams Maiden 1400m
4 Rebow (Bet Now: $1.80) for me in the opener. Team Pearce trains this gelding, who resumed over 1200m at Bunbury where he attempted to lead all the way under Noske and did give a good kick but just ran out off puff late when second to You Am I. Maps super here, probably gets a cheap lead, and now has the run under the belt.
2 Frankly Scarlett (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Paul Hunter trained son of Stratum who was hard in the market last time out in an Albany maiden where he sat off pace and tried hard when second to Ying Yang Middle. Probably has to step it up a notch or two here, but have to respect the fact the stable bring him to town.
11 Streak Away (Bet Now: $16.00) is an O’Reilly mare first up for the Parnham team. This mare didn’t really set the world on fire last time in, but she did contest some pretty strong maidens. I think whatever she does here, she will improve on, but I didn’t mind the way she trialled at Belmont a couple of weeks back.
Race 2. (16:24) Tabtouch Plate 1100m
5 Kiss The Breeze (Bet Now: $1.24) looks the obvious. Adam Durrant trained filly who is first up after a one run prep in the Spring, which saw her win impressively at Belmont. Possibly heading towards the Karrakatta Plate, and her trial win last Monday at Lark Hill suggests she has come back in excellent order.
6 Mouth Karate (Bet Now: $9.00) is a son of Dream Ahead for Simon Miller who had market support at odds when debuting here a fortnight back and the plunge almost came off but he had to settle for a narrow second to Ngawi. Can only improve off that, up to 1100m at start two is perfect and he draws to get good cover and launch.
14 Stares Andwhispers (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Lope De Vega filly on debut for the Sean Casey yard. The stable can throw up a nice youngster and I think they have one here. Thought she was excellent in a trial win at Belmont, spanking her rivals by four lengths and running decent time relative to the morning. Confident she’ll measure up.
Race 3. (17:04) Sterling Plate 1100m
Taking a chance on 8 Supreme Force (Bet Now: $3.00), a horse on debut for Team Pearce. This son of Not A Single Doubt has had three trials throughout his career, but has only had the one this time in, which saw him run second at Lark Hill in sharp time. Must be thought of highly by the stable to take on the proven horses.
1 Epic Grey (Bet Now: $4.60) is a talented gelding that is first up for the Lindsey Smith stable. He had a fab Spring prep, highlighted by several wins and a placing in the Belgravia during the Carnival. Been given a short spell and he trialled up brilliantly last week at Lark Hill. Looks ready to go. Just has to overcome the draw.
3 Saturia (Bet Now: $16.00) is a tough on speed type for the Paul Jordan camp who will give a great sight as always. Ran down the Pinjarra straight last time out and was on speed most of the way under Craig Staples, finding plenty and clinging on. Draw makes things tough, but if he can get over without spending too many petrol tickets, he’ll take some beating.
Race 4. (17:43) Hosemasters Handicap (1MW) 1400m
2 Royal Command (Bet Now: $1.75) should be putting this field away. Was hard in betting when resuming here on New Years Day but just got a mile out of his ground but worked home strongly to run fourth to Illustrious Tycoon. Pike jumps back aboard now, up to 1400m, draws well and has upside. Only bad luck beats him.
1 Harry Thomas (Bet Now: $7.50) has been racing so well for a while now and it was good to see him put the win on the board last time out at Pinjarra with some help from a lovely ride on speed from Azzopardi. He remains on and for mine he should get a gun near the pace again. Just starting to creep up in the weights now.
4 Friar’s Gift (Bet Now: $12.00) has been freshened up since racing here on New Years Day where he was near the pace throughout and tried hard but just lacked the killer blow when fourth to Kimbo’s Girl. Does go well on the fresh side, but is a shame about the gate. If Whiting can get cover, he’s a threat for sure.
Race 5. (18:20) Amelia Park Handicap (78+) 1400m
4 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $3.30) does look the obvious one to beat here. He hasn’t raced for three weeks since attempting to lead all the way at Pinjarra where he gave a tremendous kick but just died on the run when a close up third to Red Publisher. Looks to get a very cosy lead again and he saves his best for Ascot. Keen.
1 Zuccheros (Bet Now: $7.00) will appreciate the step up to 1400m after contesting the Miss Andretti over 1100m here a fortnight back where he found them a bit sharp but he did hit the line nicely late. Gets in very well at the weights after the claim for Brodie Kirby and 1400m is his pet distance. Sure to have admirers.
10 Flying Roar (Bet Now: $14.00) is a handy son of So Secret that resumes for the Jim Taylor team. His form in the Winter/Spring was pretty solid and he rarely ran a bad race. Very interesting that he resumes at 1400m, which tells me there is intent to run well first up, and the two trials leading in suggest that is the case.
Race 6. (19:00) JJ Richards & Sons Handicap (66+) 1600m
5 Taxadermy (Bet Now: $9.50) for me. Lindsey Smith trained galloper who scored a fab win first up at Bunbury before going to the 1500m here last Saturday where he just raced a touch flat but was sound behind Oliver’s Travels. Has had the two runs now so he should be close to peak fitness and this is a very winnable assignment.
1 Push To Pass (Bet Now: $6.50) hasn’t raced for three weeks since running over the Pinjarra mile where he got back off the pace and chased hard all the way when second to the low flying Missile Launch. Gets in very well at the weights after the claim for young Tayla Stone. Just has to overcome the sticky gate.
10 Romelo (Bet Now: $7.50) is the interesting runner. Adam Durrant trained stayer that resumes after another frustrating prep in the Winter/Spring where he loomed to win a race and teased, but never delivered. The trials have been okay, but he can sprint well fresh if he gets conditions to suit and I think he does here, plus Pike steers.
Race 7. (19:35) The Merrywell Handicap (1MW) 1100m
12 Bon Voyage (Bet Now: $4.20) on top. Team Williams trains this son of Testa Rossa, who was a drifter in betting when resuming at Bunbury but he let down with a lovely finale to overhaul and score an impressive maiden win. Clearly more depth here but on debut he took ground off Money Maher. That reads well for this.
6 Snow Lord (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Team Williams trained gelding that is first up. He promised a fair bit in the Winter, and was hard in the market most times, but couldn’t quite deliver. Thought the trial at Belmont was just okay, but he does sprint well fresh. If there was a negative, it might be that Pike chooses the stablemate.
7 Vandemonian (Bet Now: $7.50) looked to trial up really well prior to resuming over the 1000m here a fortnight back where he was completely unwanted in betting but worked home with real purpose from the back to run a close up fifth to Stirling Estate. Can pull out a decent run second up and he’ll be strong late.
Race 8. (20:15) Kiriin Megumi Handicap (72+) 1100m
8 Sweet Ora (Bet Now: $6.50) has been given three weeks off since racing down the Pinjarra straight where she was unlucky not to finish closer in what was a very messy race won by Yeah Dardy. She does tend to save her best for Ascot and Pike is back aboard. Hasn’t won for a while but she gets a great chance here.
12 Top of The Class (Bet Now: $9.50) on top for me in the get out. This mare comes back to 1100m after racing over 1200m here last time out where she just got a mile back in an on pace dominated affair but worked home when it was all over behind Helms Gate. She’ll give them a start again, but if she is close enough, I think she wins.
2 More Aces (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Jim Taylor trained galloper who also comes through the Yeah Dardy race at Pinjarra. He was up near the speed when the carnage happened and just died on the run late. Much better suited around a bend, he maps well, gets the claim and being third up, he should be hard fit, ready to go.
