Victorian racing this Saturday returns to Caulfield, highlighted by the Group lll Easter Cup (2000m). The weather is overcast, the track is good (3) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:25) : Robert Taranto Handicap 1100m:
Back Me: 2 Gretna (Best Odds: $4.80) debuted here in the Inglis Premier and was gassed on speed behind Valiano. She then bounced back to winning form with a strong win at the Valley. Natural improvement should see her prove hard to beat.
Big Danger: 10 Wazamba (Best Odds: $4.20) was smashed in betting when debuting in that race mentioned above and she looked strong on the turn, but just felt the pinch late and had to settle for a close up second. Drawn wide, but looks above average and should be better off with the run under the belt.
Roughie: 4 Pluto (Best Odds: $6.50) is a first starter for Mick Price after formerly being with Peter Moody. Draws terribly, but his jump outs and trials have been quite impressive and there has been market support for him.
Race Two (13:00) : Bill Collins Handicap (78) 2400m:
Back Me: 1 Adirondack (Best Odds: $4.20) put together a couple of wins on the bounce before going to the Stony Creek Cup where he ran a close up second to Scelto. Just has to overcome the tricky gate and big weight to be a major player here.
Big Danger: 2 High Church (Best Odds: $3.50), on face value, was disappointing last time out at Cranbourne, but he was back in a race dominated by those on speed. He is better than that, and with the step up in trip, he can bounce back for sure
Roughie: The race falls away a bit outside that pair. 4 Red Fella (Best Odds: $21.00) resumed in the Edenhope Cup (2000m) a couple of weeks back and closed off alright behind impressive winner Killarney Kid, beaten six lengths. He is a winner at Caulfield, has enormous upside and draws a decent gate for an in form apprentice.
Race Three (13:35) : Bert Bryant Handicap (84) 2000m:
Back Me: 3 Tears Of Joy (Best Odds: $4.80) is a very consistent mare for Mark Kavanagh who toughed it out strongly to win over this trip at Moonee Valley. She is very reliable and despite drawing a horror gate, she is a leading contender and the one to beat.
Big Danger: 6 Pindan Pearl (Best Odds: $5.00) ran third in that same race mentioned above and tried her heart out when beaten a length. She looks to have a bit of upside with her, draws well and Nolen sticks.
Roughie: 8 Winta Chiller (Best Odds: $19.00) ran fourth in the same race and closed off alright late in the piece after getting a long way back in the run. She races very well at Caulfield and will be better on the bigger track.
Race Four (14:10) : Jack Elliot Handicap 1100m:
Back Me: 1 Petits Filous (Best Odds: $1.75) looks the good thing of the weekend. She is a star filly who was simply too good for her own age and sex before being sent out a near odds on pop in the Moir where she caved in under pressure behind Buffering. Her trials and jump outs have been high class, gate one, home track…she surely won’t get beat.
Big Danger: 3 Jalan Jalan (Best Odds: $5.50) is a filly I have enormous respect for. I was keen on her for the Thousand Guineas but was injured and tipped out. If this race was over 1200m, I’d be almost tempted to put her on top. Look for her to charge late and run through the line as she progresses this time in.
Roughie: 9 Serenade (Best Odds: $11.00) looks the knockout hope. She performed very well in a couple of quality three year old races last time in, including last start behind Don’t Doubt Mamma, who is a well above average type herself. If they go stupid in front, she is the closer, especially from a good draw with Boss aboard.
Race Five (14:50) : Geoff Murphy Handicap 1100m:
Back Me: 2 Miss Promiscuity (Best Odds: $3.60) ran down the Flemington straight first up and closed off well behind an in form type in Malaguerra. She has a fabulous record at Caulfield, flies second up and gets the services of Dylan Dunn.
Big Danger: 3 Sabatini (Best Odds: $3.30) creates some interest here. She is a top class mare for the Hopes who hasn’t raced since finishing down the track in the Tristarc behind La Passe. She is an absolute bomb when produced fresh and looks extremely well weighted after the claim for Ben Thompson.
Roughie: 10 Kansas Sunflower (Best Odds: $17.00) is a handy staying mare that resumes for Luke Oliver. She is better at 1600+, but she can sprint well fresh, on her home track and has gate one. Definite threat if the breaks go his way.
Race Six (15:30) : Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (84) 1800m:
Back Me: 10 Abbasso (Best Odds: $8.00) has been given a three week freshen up since finishing midfield behind the very impressive winner Tom Melbourne, who went on to bolt up in the Albury Cup last Friday. His form this time in has been a bit off, but he should be cherry ripe fitness wise and is in the right stable.
Big Danger: 1 Gingerboy (Best Odds: $5.00) was given a peach from Yendall to win the Mildura Cup (1600m) first up, hugging the inside rail and clinging on to win narrowly but impressively. He is going to be a star over the jumps, but as we know, he is just reliable on the flat.
Roughie: 2 Master Zephyr (Best Odds: $8.50) resumed over 1400m at Flemington and was simply just run off his legs in a hot speed race behind Tried And Tired. Up to 1800m second up is perfect, draws a soft gate and can sharply bounce back second up.
Race Seven (16:10) : Mypunter.com Victoria Handicap 1400m:
Back Me: 1 Black Heart Bart (Best Odds: $3.00) looks the way to go. He was fantastic at his first run under Darren Weir when running a narrow second to The Quarterback in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m). Better suited up in trip and is just so well suited at the weights scale given his record back home in WA.
Big Danger: 3 Charmed Harmony (Best Odds: $9.00) also comes through the Newmarket where he was very good in defeat I thought when running sixth given he was racing near the outside and was the only one not near the outside fence. He should roll to the front here and take some beating, because he loves racing at Caulfield.
Roughie: 4 Red Bomber (Best Odds: $10.00) was given a beaut steer from Damien Lane to win last time over this trip at Flemington, getting up to beat the high flying Burning Front. Draws terribly here, but can sit back and unleash, as we saw last prep when he beat Group l winner Trust In A Gust.
Race Eight (16:50) : Le Pines Funerals Easter Cup 2000m:
Back Me: 7 Observational (Best Odds: $9.00) was run off his legs in the Blamey (1600m) but closed off well late in the piece. Looking for further now, should get back and charge late, and interesting to note that blinkers go on for the first time.
Big Danger: On his best form, 2 Leebaz (Best Odds: $5.00) would towel these up. On face value, he has been disappointing in his two runs this time in, but first up was behind Winx and at Flemington he was only beaten 1.2L. Draws wide, but should roll forward and get near the speed comfortably and gee he does look well placed.
Roughie: 12 Transfer Allowance (Best Odds: $67.00) closed off hard two back behind Tom Melbourne before going to the Stony Creek Cup where he made up a bit of ground late in the piece behind Scelto. He hasn’t been racing better and though a suspect at the trip, he is on the minimum and for mine is a must for exotics.
Race Nine (17:30) : Noel Rundle Handicap 2000m:
Back Me: 4 Jadeer (Best Odds: $19.00) looks value in the get out stakes. He ran in the Alister Clark (2040m) at the Valley and just couldn’t pick his feet up on the wet track. Firmer surface here and gets the services of Brad Rawiller, and he has a lethal strike rate when steering Team Hawkes runners, so keep an eye on the market.
Big Danger: 6 Last Typhoon (Best Odds: $13.00) is a blueblood who is now with Robert Smerdon. He hasn’t raced for three weeks since beating the older horses at Donald in good style. Little break between runs is the query, but it’s hard to knock form of a three year old beating the older horses, and he draws to get a sweet trip just off the pace.
Roughie: 12 See Line Woman (Best Odds: $51.00) broke her maiden status a couple of weeks back at Wangaratta, where she took some riding, but once she got going, she really powered to the line and ran through it strongly. She will eat up the trip and don’t be surprised to see her win.
