Race One (13:18) : Tab Early Quaddie Maiden Plate 1150m Form Guide
Back Me: Cyclone (Best Odds: $4.60) looks the way to go in the opener. Showed really good promise in his first campaign, which culminated with a solid fourth in the Magic Millions behind Unencumbered. Looked very good in a recent Warwick Farm barrier trial, and on class and race day form, he surely wins this.
Big Danger: The chance of rain hitting the track won’t be an issue for Country Warrior (Best Odds: $2.20), who has placed twice from as many career starts, both on slow ground. Don’t think it’s his go as he looks as if he’ll appreciate firmer going, but at least he has got the race day experience on rain affected ground.
Roughie: Really liked the way that Hallowed Crown (Best Odds: $16.00) hit the line in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm recently, settling last before being brought out wide and finding the line. Has the paint and the breeding to suggest he can win some races.
Race Two (13:53) : Hyland Race Colours Maiden Plate 1150m Form Guide
Back Me: Going for Gai to snare the two juvenile races, this time with first starter Talisa (Best Odds: $7.00), who has looked pretty good in a couple of barrier trials, the latest being on March 11 when third to Magic Millions runner up Oakleigh Girl at Warwick Farm. Bred to come to hand quite early and quickly, and with Chad being booked, drawn well…looks hard to beat.
Big Danger: Amicus (Best Odds: $2.80) came from a long way back when racing over the 1100m here on debut to run a close up third to Tetsuko, who then performed okay in stakes company. Extra 50m is a plus, as is the race day experience. Looks the pick of the raced runners.
Roughie: Shamardal Gold (Best Odds: $8.00) closed off quite nicely in her latest trial, sitting outside the speed and sticking on well late to run second to Sandy Waters. Bit of an unknown on the dam side, but she has the Waterhouse polish and is on her home track.
Race Three (14:28) : Get Racy Handicap 1550m Form Guide
Back Me: Sonoma (Best Odds: $4.60) is finding it hard to break her maiden status, but she worked to the line very strongly late last time out at Kembla behind Passionflower, who ran well in town prior, so the form line is pretty good, as well as drawing the paint and stepping up to 1550m. Looks one of the better bets on the program.
Big Danger: Golden Aro (Best Odds: $3.80) had his first run as a gelding a couple of weeks back at Kembla and did a stack of work early, sitting four wide early before pressing on, and he looked as if he was going to kick back and win when challenged 200m out, but the effort and being first up took its toll late and he was beaten a short neck. Provided he hasn’t taken any harm from that run, he should take some beating here.
Roughie: Our Songbird (Best Odds: $3.20) was ridden too close to the speed first up at Hawkesbury, then appreciated a colder ride at Kembla when finishing second to stablemate Bubbles ‘N’ Boats. That run should top her off nicely for this and Blake Shinn is riding in sparkling form.
Race Four (15:03) : Testa Rossa @ Vinery Handicap (74) 1800m Form Guide
Back Me: Pretty keen here on Murphy’s Delight (Best Odds: $3.60), who was a top winner at his Australian debut at Canterbury when sitting on the speed and fighting off all of his rivals under the urgings of Nash. He’ll only improve fitness wise, up in distance and only carries 54kg.
Big Danger: Wine ‘N Dine (Best Odds: $5.00) just failed to get Green Empire here three back. He then ran at Kensington and was excellent late, running third to blacktype class mare Global Dream before running second to Murphy’s Delight after getting every chance. Does get the weight pull here, and that will help when it comes to the crunch.
Roughie: Lucky Lucky (Best Odds: $6.50) worked to the line very strongly late at Warwick Farm behind Entirely Platinum. That form has since been franked, with that horse winning the Sky High Stakes last Saturday. Will love the step up to 1800m and getting to a bigger track. Definite threat.
Race Five (15:40) : Tab Quaddie Handicap (70) 1800m Form Guide
Back Me: Was very keen on So Nostalgic (Best Odds: $9.00) three back at Warwick Farm, but didn’t really let down on the bog track, then raced at Wyong in a field of four and sustained a long run to trounce his rivals. Well above average gelding who will prove hard to beat here.
Big Danger: Rock Sturdy (Best Odds: $3.70) was just about to burst through and win a couple of weeks back before the gap closed on him a few strides out and was forced back to fourth. Then he backed up a week later and was held up behind tired horses before shoving into the clear and sprinting sharply to win. Quality animal who was backed in the Pharlap last Saturday before being scratched.
Roughie: Gallatin (Best Odds: $13.00) was unlucky here when resuming, getting flattened in the straight when making ground. I’ll forgive him for the Gosford failure given it was a slowly run race and I am not sure the smaller, tighter tracks are his go. 1800m here should suit, and he is the class factor.
Race Six (16:20) : Drummond Golf Handicap (70) 1800m Form Guide
Back Me: Giving Hydro (Best Odds: $10.00) another chance here after his failure last week at Newcastle where he missed the kick, sat back, weaved through before getting checked and being forced to come to the inside, which was the inferior ground. Should press forward from the wide barrier, and being third up now, this is D-Day.
Big Danger: Shikra (Best Odds: $16.00) took an eternity to wind up, but eventually did and got there in the last couple of strides to win at Hawkesbury. In the Spring he ran behind Complacent and wasn’t disgraced. Starting to find some patches of that form, and that should see him be right in the mix here.
Roughie: More Beautiful (Best Odds: $8.00) was a long odds on favourite at Kembla Grange, and didn’t let her supporters down despite the fact it was only a small margin. I’d put that down to the fact she was exposed to the lead too far from home, through no fault of Kissick, just the fact they were a bunch of pluggers. She needs a bunny to chase, and she should get that here.
Race Seven (17:00) : Theraces.com.au Handicap (75) 1150m Form Guide
Back Me: Really interested to see the return of More Than Faith (Best Odds: $4.40) to the racetrack. Showed great promise during the Spring, beaten narrowly in the Reginald Allen to Champagne Cath, then running down the straight during Cup week. Comes here off the back of a couple of strong trials, and if she is anywhere near right fitness wise, she’ll go very close to winning.
Big Danger: Agon (Best Odds: $8.00) did a power of work last start at Canterbury, sitting three and four wide before pushing forward and only going down narrowly to a handy type in Commanding Wit. Drawn much better here and drops in weight. Hard to beat.
Roughie: Saturn Rock (Best Odds: $21.00) was excellent at her first run under the care of Grahame Begg behind Champagne Cath, then was one of those backmarkers who never got into the race when down the track to Lilliburlero in the Triscay. Massive drop in class here, and fitter.
Race Eight (17:40) : Big Sports Breakfast Handicap (75) 1300m Form Guide
Back Me: Countryman (Best Odds: $4.80) had a picnic in front last start at Newcastle, and made them pay, sprinting hard in the straight to win by three lengths with some really slick closing sectionals. Has always promised to do something like that, and now that he has, he deserves another crack in town.
Big Danger: Murder Of Crows (Best Odds: $4.20) resumed off the back of a solid trial placing to Red Tracer with a fast finishing second at Canterbury on wet ground behind Casino Swoop, who led, dictated and kicked on the bend, putting the race beyond doubt. Murder Of Crows was near last on the turn and made up a stack of ground. If the track remains in the dead range, he’ll be hard to beat.
Roughie: The knockout horse here Flying Bay (Best Odds: $15.00) who got to the line very nicely first up over an unsuitable journey at Canterbury behind Casino Swoop. He is a second up winner and Blake Shinn has elected this horse ahead of a couple of other chances in this race.
