Morphetville on the course proper is where Boxing Day racing in SA will take place. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (13:08) : Julie Gifford Maiden Plate 1050m:
Back Me: 10 Never Be Discreet (Bet Now: $2.60) is a four start maiden that resumes here for the Stokes yard. She raced during the Winter, with her best effort being her last start when second to Zunbaqa, who went on to be competitive in Melbourne during the early part of the Spring. Trial last week looked solid enough, she draws well and gets the claim for Finnegan.
Big Danger: 7 Dawaa (Bet Now: $4.00) is a filly on debut for the Hayes/Dabernig team. I think she has to be rated as a threat given the depth engaged here isn’t strong and she looked to trial up quite nicely I thought at Tatura recently when running third to Bewildering, who came out and bolted up on Saturday at Gawler in a deep maiden. Market watch for sure.
Long Shot: I’m convinced that 1 Cobber (Bet Now: $7.00) is the best horse in the race but he just has no race sense and no clue as to what the racing game is about. Performed very well during the Autumn Carnival, including midfield efforts behind Rageese and Anteluca in Stakes grade. No trials, but if he is anywhere near right, he’ll go close.
Race Two (13:43) : Medallian Homes Handicap (75) 1050m:
Back Me: 9 Lockdown Jack (Bet Now: $8.00) resumed over 1000m on the Parks track three weeks back where he got a mile back in the run off a hot speed yet eventually picked up and was strong late when fourth to Ready Sunshine. Looks well placed here second up and should take some beating here.
Big Danger: 5 Duckworth (Bet Now: $3.50) should be suited back to 1050m. He ran over 1200m here last start where Holder gave him an absolute peach of a ride and the ride did deserve a win but the horse just had no answers late to the finishing burst of Strategic Demand. Back in trip is a tick, he draws well and Holder sticks. Hard to beat.
Long Shot: 4 Alcobro (Bet Now: $6.00) is a horse in pretty good form for the Richard Jolly yard. He ran here last start where he looked gone on the turn and was going to run last, but he stuck on really well and was only beaten just under three lengths by Battle Brewing. He has reacted well on the four week turnaround a couple of times and he does have some really good form behind him.
Race Three (14:18) : UBET Handicap (82) 2500m:
Back Me: 3 Flying Casino (Bet Now: $4.40) had been teasing to win one of these races for a while and all he needed was a trip to Flemington to sharpen him up. He wasn’t bad over 2800m on Cup Day before returning back home over 2400m on the Parks track and he absolutely spanked them. Not sure he’ll repeat that kind of effort, but he’ll be a major threat for sure now he has found winning form
Big Danger: 7 Nisos (Bet Now: $4.80) was desperately unlucky nine days back over 1950m on the Parks track where he looked to be absolutely bolting in the run but when it came to getting clear in the straight, he just had no luck when appearing to have plenty to offer and you could make a strong case that he should have won. Back up to 2500m will really suit and Creighton jumps back on, and he rides the horse well.
Long Shot: 6 Majestic Moment (Bet Now: $9.00) ran over 2000m here a tick over two weeks ago where he had the nice just off the speed but at that distance against those type of horses, he just lacked the winning turn of foot to go with them and just whacked away for fifth. Suited up to 2500m for sure, fitter and Gatt sticks.
Race Four (14:53) : Hughes Chauffeured Limousines Handicap (70) 1600m:
Back Me: 7 Metier (Bet Now: $7.00) was a handy juvenile for Tony McEvoy who lost his way there for a while but his two efforts this time in do suggest that a win is close. He didn’t get much room last time out at Balaklava and wanted to duck in behind runners but he hit the line strongly once he put his mind to it. Soft gate, upside and Thornton sticks. Hard to beat.
Big Danger: 8 On A Dream (Bet Now: $3.70) ran over this track/distance last time out and gee his effort was huge in defeat given he was three wide no cover on a genuine speed and for a horse who generally races best with cover, he had every right to drop out, he still kicked on to run third to Mullinger Lane. Draws a touch wide again, but if he gets cover, he’ll look the winner at some stage.
Long Shot: 11 Cyclone Thomas (Bet Now: $8.00) resumed over 1200m here a tick over two weeks back where he was hovering around the $11-$12 mark but to the eye was quite poor I thought when running last to Strategic Diamond. But you have to keep in mind that 1200m is short of his best distance. Suited at the mile and has really good second up stats.
Race Five (15:28) : Schweppes Handicap (70) 1200m:
Back Me: 3 Vikings Reward (Bet Now: $4.60) produced a stunning debut on the Parks track a tick over three weeks back where he got back to near last in the run before Gatt decided to the hug the rails and ride for luck and when he got it, the horse exploded and dashed right away for a super win and ran a sizzling final sectional. Form from that maiden has been solid and I think with natural improvement, he’ll take some holding out.
Big Danger: 7 I’ll Decide (Bet Now: $3.20) was far from disgraced in the Twilight Glow at Sandown behind Prompt Response before being freshened up and racing at Sandown where she tried had but was no match for the talented Invictum Domina. Returns back home and with that form next to her name, she’ll take some beating.
Long Shot: 9 Lady Alcatraz (Bet Now: $7.00) found plenty when challenged to win on debut at Gawler before racing over this track/distance where she had the charmed run behind the tempo and fought on quite well when fourth to star NT yougster Desert Lashes. Draws well again and Tourneur gets on very well with Marilyn Smith runners.
Race Six (16:08) : Farmers Union Iced Coffee Handicap (75) 1200m:
Back Me: 6 Lexgetreddy (Bet Now: $8.50) spanked them two back on the Parks track before backing up seven days later over this track/distance where she was wide no cover for the trip yet stuck on quite well in defeat when fifth to Strategic Demand. The claim for Finnegan is a big time and she only needs to overcome the tricky draw to look the winner at some stage.
Big Danger: 2 Beautiful Flyer (Bet Now: $3.00) was enormous when wide no cover throughout fresh when beaten a lip by Battle Brewing before going to the Marion where she was again wide but didn’t disgrace herself at all behind Cavaloce. Looks just about thrown in here in terms of depth and the weight after the claim. Major threat.
Long Shot: 12 Enchanting Beauty (Bet Now: $8.00) was a tough winner at this track/distance three back before having genuine excuses in two subsequent runs, firstly pulling up not 100% before the tempo was against him here ten days ago behind Written Birch. Should get a charmed run near the speed and rates highly for me here.
Race Seven (16:48) : Adelaide Galvanising Christmas Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: Really keen here on 8 Finke (Bet Now: $5.50). This former NT star resumed for Stokes on the Parks track a tick over three weeks back where he was heavily backed late in betting and it was the slow tempo that beat him when a close up third to Penny For A Pound. Trial since was very good to the eye and I think with normal luck, he’ll be too good.
Big Danger: 3 Tarco (Bet Now: $5.50) is a risk at 1200m, but he is hard fit and in ripping form. He ran over 1000m here nine days ago where he attempted to lead all the way and gave a really good kick in the straight but was no match late for the finishing burst of Cashed. Not sure he can lead all the way at 1200m, but with a sit, his turn of foot can come into play.
Long Shot: 5 Prince Harada (Bet Now: $15.00) resumed in the Marion where he had market support at a price and after leading most of the way, he just felt the pinch late and was swamped when running fifth to Cavaloce. I think the lead is his there for the taking, and with the run under the belt, he’ll give a sight.
Race Eight (17:28) : MAC: STOP DRUG DRIVING Handicap (64) 1200m:
Back Me: 14 Ramesses (Bet Now: $21.00) at $26 looks a silly price. He ran over 1250m on the Parks track where he was kept very safe in the market but didn’t fire a shot at all behind House Of Wax. I think he will be better suited racing outside horses and that is what will happen, plus he will only carry 51kg. Great each way bet at a price.
Big Danger: 7 Mykiebaeu (Bet Now: $4.40) debuted here in a maiden on the Friday twilight program ten days back where he was wide no cover on speed for the trip yet when asked for the effort by Jamie Kah, he drew clear late and won quite impressively and ran time. Never easy jumping from maiden to 64, but he looks above average.
Long Shot: 3 Regal Spur (Bet Now: $16.00) ran over 1050m here a tick over two weeks back and the run was inconclusive to my eye given he got badly held up in the first half of the straight and couldn’t build any momentum. The Blinkers coming off is noteworthy and he does have a lethal record when produced third up.
BEST BET: Race Seven Number 8 Finke
NEXT BEST: Race Two Number 9 Lockdown Jack
