A strong card of racing has been assembled for the Gold Coast this Saturday for what shapes up to be the main lead up program towards the Magic Millions. The feature race is the $150,000 Group lll B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:52) : Alan Thomas Handicap (75) 2200m:
Back Me: Annaman (Best Odds: $2.80) will get another chance for me in a very open race. He was ridden a touch too close IMO last start and rightfully faded out of the race to run fourth to Tangara, beaten ten lengths. He is much better than that, and has enough credits in the bank to be forgiven.
Big Danger: Mr Lebrock (Best Odds: $8.00) ran third in that race mentioned above, and he was ridden cold before peeling out and working home strongly late in the piece. He beat Annaman by four lengths and gets 1.5kg weight pull despite that margin.
Roughie: Kobi Creek (Best Odds: $16.00) drops big time in grade after contesting an open handicap last Saturday where he sat on speed and dropped out to finish down the track behind Volkhere, who is the form stayer in Brisbane at the moment. He has a really good record at the track and one of the better on pace riders in Australia, Tegan Harrison, takes the ride.
Race Two (13:29) : Stuart James Memorial Handicap (75) 1200m:
Back Me: Liberation (Best Odds: $4.60) was given a lovely ride from Brad Pengilly to win first up at the Sunny Coast and though the margin was narrow, it was soft and quite impressive. He has promised previously to be a Stakes class horse, so for his connections, hopefully he goes through his grades, starting off here, and I am confident he can get the job done here.
Big Danger: Brigadoon Legend (Best Odds: $13.00) is a Gold Coast specialist who fought on well last start at Doomben when a close up fourth to Britalia Kate, beaten 1.5L. The start prior was at this track/distance and he bolted home. Draws well and leading Gold Coast rider Dan Griffin takes the ride.
Roughie: Friendly Dragon (Best Odds: $17.00) resumes here for Les Ross after a 69 day spell. He normally needs a run or two to find his best form, but his recent Deagon trial was sharp, he handles all conditions, draws well and D Dunn rides.
Race Three (14:04) : Origin Jockey Series Heat 7 (1MW) 1400m:
Back Me: Amajill (Best Odds: $6.00) is a talented mare for Bruce Hill who was excellent in defeat last time out over this track/distance given she sat back in a very slowly run race, yet she would have won in another stride. Loves racing on her home track, and from the gate here, she draws to get nice cover and ambush late.
Big Danger: Umgeni (Best Odds: $6.50) is on the back up from last Saturday where he was very unlucky when fourth to Profiler after not getting much room in the straight and wasn’t really allowed to build up momentum under Craig Williams. Back on his home track and in form rider takes over.
Roughie: Telemore (Best Odds: $41.00) ran over 1200m at the Sunny Coast last start when working home well from near last to run fifth to Mywayorthehighway, beaten just over three lengths. That horse will go around as a chance later on in the program, so the form doesn’t read too bad, and this horse has upside, plus has a great record on the track.
Race Four (14:39) : B.J. McLachlan Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: Zelady’s Night Out (Best Odds: $3.00) has been one of the better two year olds Brisbane has produced this season, and that was clearly evident where she took care of her rivals in the Calaway Gal (1050m). The positive is that she handles wet tracks, and that is what the forecast is for this Saturday. The negative is that her two wins have been aided by bias towards leaders and horses near the inside. But on face value, she has been quite impressive.
Big Danger: Nikitas (Best Odds: $3.40) debuted at Doomben three weeks back and was quite explosive in winning, leading all the way and showing an electric turn of foot in the straight when asked for the effort by Michael Cahill.
Roughie: Punishing (Best Odds: $26.00) started a warm favourite in the Phelan Ready (1050m) but was just simply awful behind Sundance, beaten 13 lengths. I’m giving him another chance purely on the breeding because he is by one of the best wet track sires in Australia.
Race Five (15:17) : Origin Jockey Series Heat 8 1800m:
Back Me: Looks a really good race for Our Boy Nicholas (Best Odds: $5.00), who worked home strongly from a rearward position to run a close up fourth to in form mare Glorious Red, beaten just under four lengths. Suited up in trip and he has placed at this track/distance from the Magic Millions Stayers Cup last year.
Big Danger: Landlocked (Best Odds: $9.50) comes through the Brisbane Handicap (1640m) where he stuck to the task quite gamely when running seventh to Traveston Girl, beaten just under three lengths. Looks ideally placed at this level, at this trip and loves give in the track.
Roughie: The horse with upside is Hot Saga (Best Odds: $16.00), who ran behind Glorious Red in the same race mentioned above and he loomed as a threat on the turn, but his fitness just gave way. He is a three time winner at 1800m, has placed on the track before and saves his best for rain affected ground.
Race Six (15:57) : Bat Out Of Hell 900m:
Back Me: Really keen here on Diamond Oasis (Best Odds: $3.50). He was unwanted in betting last time out at Rosehill, and ran accordingly, finishing last behind Howmuchdoyouloveme. Freshened up and pretty much trialled like Black Caviar in winning a Warwick Farm trial last week. Only bad luck can beat him here. One of the best bets this weekend.
Big Danger: Interesting runner is Tahitian Black (Best Odds: $11.00), who hasn’t raced since finishing last to Dublin Lass in the Starlight (1100m) at Rosehill. His trial prior and subsequently have been excellent on face value, and from gate one here, all he has to do is kick and find a spot, and he should be right in the finish.
Roughie: Whiskey Allround (Best Odds: $13.00) is a talented galloper who didn’t really set the world on fire in two runs to kick off his prep, but he looked much better at the Deagon trials a few weeks back, winning his particular trial in good fashion. He can be hit and miss, but on his best form, he’s a definite threat here.
Race Seven (16:37) : Driefontein Handicap 1200m:
Back Me: The drop back to 1200m and mares grade should suit Miss Cover Girl (Best Odds: $8.00), who is on her last life with me. Wide and firm track didn’t suit two back in the George Moore, then went to the Lough Neagh and didn’t run the 1350m out behind Fontelina. Looks so well placed here, and if the real Miss Cover Girl turns up, she’d beat these.
Big Danger: Going with the in form mare Slots (Best Odds: $6.50), who broke through for a well deserved Stakes win last time out over 1350m at Doomben when winning the Listed Just Now Classic. She is in a real purple patch of form and is well weighted, plus handles all conditions, as well as a fast run 1200m will be ideal.
Roughie: The drop in depth should also suit Eloping (Best Odds: $17.00), who is now having her first run for former jockey now trainer Peter Robl. She sat on speed in the Razor Sharp (1200m) at Randwick and fought on well, but was bloused late when ninth to Cradle Me, beaten just under three lengths. She gets conditions to suit here, and really, if ever she is going to perform at Stakes level again, this is the race.
Race Eight (17:17) : Vo Rogue Plate 1300m:
Back Me: I’ll take a chance with Single Gaze (Best Odds: $18.00), who resumed for Nick Olive at Randwick a couple of weeks back where she ran a solid fourth to in form mare Rule The River. She ran third in the Magic Millions last year, and the stable have deliberately bypassed the Spring in preference of Summer riches here. Bred to swim also, so any rain will be appreciated.
Big Danger: Egyptian Symbol (Best Odds: $3.50) is a three year old filly for Bjorn Baker who comes to Queensland after contesting the Wyong 3YO Magic Millions where she didn’t appear to handle the tight turns but fought on very well when second to Flippant. Heading towards the Magic Millions and this should be a lovely tune up. Bigger track and faster tempo will be more to her liking.
Roughie: Given her racing pattern, Madotti (Best Odds: $9.00) will receive more bad luck than good luck, and she copped some bad luck behind Secret Saga in the Mode Plate at Doomben, getting well back and wide before really savaging the line the last 150m to run a close up third. If she can somehow sit closer, she’ll go very close to knocking off this field, and the bigger track will be perfect.
Race Nine (17:55) : Goldmarket Handicap 1300m:
Back Me: Baligari (Best Odds: $9.00) is a talented Adelaide galloper who worked home strongly late last start at Morphettville when second to Lord Aspen in the City of Marion (1200m). If the rain comes, it will suit this gelding, and a testing 1300m on a wet track will suit this horse perfectly, who does have Stakes form up to 2000m.
Big Danger: Saluter (Best Odds: $6.50) sat on speed and toughed it out very strongly in the Lough Neagh last time out at Doomben when running second to Fontelina. Gets a 1.5kg weight swing and draws gate one with D Dunn on board. Ticks plenty of boxes.
Roughie: Jopa (Best Odds: $9.00) resumed over 1050m at Doomben a fortnight back and was given a lovely ride from Robbie Fradd to get the job done impressively in favourable conditions. He handles all conditions, but I think he will be more effective if he gets his toe in, so if that eventuates, he is a knockout hope.
