Randwick will play host to its traditional Australia Day meeting this Thursday with a pretty solid eight race card, highlighted by the $150,000 Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m). The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (13:20) : #theraces Handicap (69) 1800m:
Back Me: 1 Harper’s Choice (Bet Now: $1.80) is a handy up and coming stayer for Gerald Ryan that was no match for Black On Gold over this track/distance on January 2 before going to the Canterbury 1900m where he was ridden a treat on speed by McEvoy and the horse was powerful to the line in winning. Back to the 1800m here looks ideal and is the one to beat.
Big Danger: 2 Sizzling Bullet (Bet Now: $4.20) resumed at the Beaumont track at Newcastle a tick under three weeks back when sitting back in the run and finishing his race off strongly against the tempo to run third. Has since been to the trials at Rosehill and won that in sharp fashion. Has upside and Bowman steers.
Long Shot: 4 Wu Gok (Bet Now: $10.00) ran second to Harper’s Choice in that Canterbury race and though beaten convincingly, his effort was game in defeat given he did come off the bit a fair way from home but stuck on well. He was disappointing in that Black On Gold race, so turning the tables will be a tough ask, but he’s hard fit and should be around the mark.
Race Two (13:55) : Tab.com.au Plate 1200m:
Back Me: 3 Drachenfels (Bet Now: $3.40) was a real money muncher in his first prep but I’m keen to see what he does here. His four career runs resulted in three placings and a fourth to Comin’ Through, who of course went on to win the Carbine Club and is touted as a Group l winner in waiting. Trials have been outstanding and really, he looks a Group horse. Just needs to produce it on race day.
Big Danger: 6 Launch Code (Bet Now: $3.20) was backed as if unbeatable when debuting at Canterbury but unfortunately for those that backed him, he let them down with a narrow second to Samantha. Disappointing if you backed him, but the run was still quite good. Bowman takes over, trained on the track and should have natural improvement.
Long Shot: 9 Shackleton (Bet Now: $8.00) had a big boom on him prior to debuting at Warwick Farm given he looked very good in several trials and the the $1 Million+ pricetag. Unfortunately for his supporters, he let the punters down with a below par effort behind Ebenos but that horse has won again since so the form is okay, albeit not as strong as the form with the two horses above him here. Still, willing to give him another chance.
Race Three (14:30) : Hyland Race Colours Handicap (78) 1100m:
Back Me: 7 Shahrazad (Bet Now: $6.00) is a well performed mare for James Cummings who had some really good form behind her in the Winter before failing at Rosehill and being tipped out. Trialled up very well behind Global Glamour prior to resuming at Canterbury where she worked home well late behind In Her Time. Not quite as dynamic second up, but stable is going well, trained on the track and has upside.
Big Danger: 9 Gretna (Bet Now: $3.90) is the very interesting runner here. Chris Waller trained three year old filly loaded with potential but just has a problem of not producing it on a consistent basis. In saying that though, she contested some really good races during the Spring, several of those at Stakes grade. Looked really sharp in a couple of barrier trials, both in solid time, so she’s definitely forward enough to sprint well fresh.
Long Shot: 5 Chosen Prayer (Bet Now: $6.50) is the hard fit mare up and running, ready to go. She strung together three seconds before dropping back to the Highway grade at Warwick Farm and aided by a lovely steer from Blake Shinn, she got the job done impressively. Zero from five at Randwick is the negative, but it’s hard to knock the way she is racing at the moment.
Race Four (15:05) : TAB Handicap (72) 1800m:
Back Me: 4 Tahsin (Bet Now: $3.60) is clearly the best horse in the race but he is just a big boy, which was clear to see last Wednesday at Warwick Farm over the mile. The pace was slow midrace, so Angland got on his bike and shot around them to take the lead on the home turn, and to his credit he fought on well but was no match late for the heavily backed Husswick, but he did himself no favours by doing everything wrong. Legs were all over the shop, he was dipping, diving…everything. Loose unit, but the talent is there.
Big Danger: 10 Big Albert (Bet Now: $9.00) is another big baby with a bit to learn but there is a decent engine under the hood. Disappointed in his first two runs back from a break but got his confidence well and truly up last start over 1500m at Muswellbrook, spanking the field by 2.5L and running right away late. 1800m at Randwick looks perfect and now he has that winning feeling, he can go right on with it.
Roughie: 12 Kokopu (Bet Now: $31.00) deserves a crack in town after a couple of really good efforts at the provincials, starting off at Gosford behind Highleigh before taking care of them in dominant fashion at Muswellbrook. That win was over 1750m and he was strong to the line so I don’t see the 1800m here being an issue and last time he was in town he was five lengths off Queensland Derby runner Rodrico.
Race Five (15:40) : Schweppes Handicap (67) 1400m:
Back Me: 9 Dead Calm (Bet Now: $7.50) deserves a crack in town after three sharp wins in the bush, starting off at Tamworth before beating them up at Scone. He then went to Taree over the mile where he looked in complete control of the race and never gave his backers a moment of concern. Back to 1400m is no issue, he’s hard fit, in winning form, and stable is going well.
Big Danger: 3 I Am Impressed (Bet Now: $5.50) is a horse who is going really well at the moment for Ron Quinton but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Sat wide most of the trip over this track/distance on Boxing Day when beaten narrowly by Invincible Knight before going to Warwick Farm last Wednesday where he got back and wide yet made up good ground behind Dorf Star. On the Invincible Knight run alone, he looks one of the hardest to beat.
Long Shot: 11 Sound Works (Bet Now: $12.00) is a handy mare for Michael Moroney who has been alright in two runs back from a break. Closed off strongly fresh at Beaumont-Newcastle behind Your Way before bumping into that mare again at Canterbury. Draws to sit much closer in the run and Shinn steers. Knockout chance at odds if she doesn’t get too far back.
Race Six (16:20) : Vili’s Pies Australia Day Cup 2400m:
Back Me: 1 Destiny’s Kiss (Bet Now: $2.70) has the best form leading in to this so I will go his way but you could make a genuine case for just about all of these. His highlights this Summer include wins in the Xmas Cup and Tatts Cup. The Tatts Cup win came two back before he went to the Wyong Cup where it was just a complete forgive/forget given nothing from the back made any significant ground that afternoon, never mind the slow tempo. Loves Randwick and should take some beating.
Big Danger: 2 Index Linked (Bet Now: $4.20) hasn’t raced since the Tatts Cup, which was on January 2 when he sat near the speed and fought on strongly to run a close up second to Destiny’s Kiss. Has since trialled, which came last Tuesday at Rosehill when fifth to Galaxy Warrior. Been a while since he has won, but he gets a great chance to turn the tables.
Long Shot: 7 Dream Folk (Bet Now: $18.00) could be the knockout chance at odds here. He has got a couple of strong placings at this track/distance under his belt, albeit in weaker company. The latest of those came a tick under a fortnight back when sitting back near last and making a long, searching run to finish second to the in form Admiral Jello. Has to step it up a notch or two here, but he’s in form and remains down in the weights.
Race Seven (17:00) : Tooheys New Handicap (77) 1000m:
Back Me: 2 Raido (Bet Now: $6.50) was unwanted in betting when racing over 1100m at Canterbury under the lights and he did look in trouble on the turn in terms of looking for a run, but star apprentice Rachel King shoved into the clear and the horse flashed late to win. Has run well at Randwick previously and draws to get the run of the race from the good draw.
Big Danger: 3 Hanwritten (Bet Now: $4.20) is the big watch here. Sparingly raced six year old that is a winner of four out of his nine career outings, with one of those wins being a strong Highway victory at this track/distance. No trials leading in, which is unlike the stable, so that has to be a question mark, but there is no denying his talent.
Long Shot: 9 Duty Dude (Bet Now: $10.00) was given a lovely steer by Travis Wolfgram to win two back at Kembla Grange before going to the 900m at the Gold Coast where he sat wide with cover throughout and though never a winning threat, he stuck on quite well in defeat to run third, beaten a couple of lengths. Can be hit and miss at times, but he is showing some consistency now which is a good sign heading forward.
Race Eight (17:40) : TAB Rewards Handicap (71) 1200m:
Back Me: 13 Hot Vinni (Bet Now: $21.00) has a horrible racing pattern, but he is above average and is proven in town. Slow tempo beat him two back at Scone behind Recife Beach before going to Canterbury a couple of weeks back where the negative ride cost him the win IMO. Got back to last near the rails and was never really clear until the 100m when savaging the line. He will love the spacious surroundings Randwick has to offer, and they will go quick here.
Big Danger: 4 Magicaz (Bet Now: $9.50) was a dominant first up winner at Warwick Farm before a game second over this track/distance on Boxing Day over a subsequent winner before failing on a shifty track at Warwick Farm. Looks well placed on top of the ground here and Heywood jumps back on. Hard to beat.
Long Shot: 15 Nicof (Bet Now: $51.00) looks a really good price at around $51. He comes through a Highway at Warwick Farm where he looked to pull hard in the run and that just took away his finishing burst when fourth to Chosen Prayer. Gets right down in the weights again with the claim for McDougall and draws to get good cover and ambush late.
BEST BET: Race Six Number 1 Destiny’s Kiss
NEXT BEST: Race Two Number 3 Drachenfels
VALUE: Race Eight Number 13 Hot Vinni
