Race One (1:38pm) : Happy Australia Day Handicap 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Pretty keen on I’m Not Sure (Best Odds: $3.20) to get the job done here in the opener. His two career runs to date have been outstanding, starting off with a second to Guilietta at Rosehill before a closing fourth to a very impressive type in Holler. He appears to have the race experienced runners covered, and the first starters don’t look as good as he does.
Big Danger: Echo Queen (Best Odds: $14.00) is on debut for Chris Waller after a couple of really nice trials, in particular last week when winning one at Rosehill under a good hold from Blake Shinn, who was due to ride Counterattack but that horse ran on the weekend, but I am sure he would be riding this filly had Counterattack not been a dual acceptor. Big watch on debut.
Roughie: Trust My Luck (Best Odds: $13.00) has been pretty good in his two career outings, starting off with a fourth to Sampeah at Rosehill before making ground late in the Wyong Magic Millions behind Zoutenant. Drops a fair bit in class here with the exception of the top tip. Awkward draw, but will be very strong late.
Race Two (2:13pm) : TAB Rewards Handicap 1900m: Form Guide
Back Me: With the likelihood of a very soft lead, I’m putting Another Al (Best Odds: $3.60) on top. His first two runs this time in were average, but he stepped up to the mile at Kembla and kicked on very strongly to win, being very strong at the end of the race, so I have no qualms with him running 1900m, and as said earlier, I think he’ll get a comfortable time in front.
Big Danger: Colour Of Money (Best Odds: $4.40) looks the pick of the Team Cummings pair after a couple of really strong efforts in town, starting off two back here over 1580m when second to subsequent Randwick winner Sadler’s Lake before going to Warwick Farm and running on well late behind Kontiki Dane, who ran well on Thursday at Wyong. Up to 1900m looks ideal and Bowman sticks.
Roughie: Wildenstein (Best Odds: $19.00) was last seen on Christmas Eve at Warwick Farm when making up ground late to run third to Herne’s Oak, beaten two lengths. It’ll be a month between runs and he steps up to 1900m, so Paul Perry must have got some decent work into him, and there are no real stand outs here, so it’s that sort of race where something can bob up at odds without surprising.
Race Three (2:48pm) : Hyland Race Colours Handicap (74) 1900m: Form Guide
Back Me: Best bet on the card IMO in Jitterbug (Best Odds: $4.00), who looks beautifully suited here. He ran on very strongly on Boxing Day behind Unique at Randwick, then again worked to the line powerfully when fifth to stablemate Great Esteem, beaten just over a length. He was nominated for Saturday, but instead tackles the easier option. Won’t be far away from the gate, up in trip and both stable and rider are in form.
Big Danger: Olympic Dream (Best Odds: $12.00) put behind her a frustrating run of outs with a narrow but impressive maiden win at Kembla Grange on January 3, coming from midfield on the turn to eventually wear down the leaders. She’s always promised a fair bit, and now that she has won, she could go right on with it and remain in town, and be competitive.
Roughie: Riva Romantica (Best Odds: $8.50) put behind her a frustrating run of outs with a dominant win over the Newcastle mile under the guidance of gun French hoop Thomas Huet. Go back through her form and she really seems to run for the European style riders, so the booking of Daniel Muscatt shouldn’t be an issue, she draws well and should relish the 1900m.
Race Four (3:23pm) : Inglis Bonus Handicap 1250m: Form Guide
Back Me: Vandemonian (Best Odds: $4.20) started prohibitive odds first up at Newcastle and duly saluted, then went to Randwick and was far from disgraced when fourth to above average gelding Kaepernick. Comes back a fair bit in class, McEvoy takes over, drawn well, hard to beat.
Big Danger: Shamardal Gold (Best Odds: $15.00) showed really good speed from a middle draw to lead all the way at Kembla Grange first up, beating home a couple of handy maiden gallopers. Probably should get over thanks to the horse drawn inside him, Sure And Fast, and should prove hard to beat.
Roughie: Country Warrior (Best Odds: $15.00) is another that has promised to do a fair bit, but just hasn’t gone on with it. In saying that, he did stick on very well over this track/distance last time out when fourth to Coolcraft, beaten just under two lengths. He does race well here and is clearly knocking on the door to win a race.
Race Five (4:00pm) : TAB Place Multi Handicap (75) 1100m: Form Guide
Back Me: $7.50 for Terra Amata (Best Odds: $8.00) seems great overs IMO. This mare is racing so well at the moment, running second to Religify here two back before going to Rosehill and bumping into Craftiness. She does race very well here, and should get the dream run off a hot speed, and does look well weighted. Hard to beat I feel.
Big Danger: Inz’N’Out (Best Odds: $2.80) has been excellent in two runs back from a break, starting off here with a close second here to Music Magnate before going to Randwick and running third to a couple of smart three year olds in Kaepernick and Meursault. Drawn horribly, and will more than likely do some work from the gate, but he has the class and ability to win. Just needs luck.
Roughie: The hot speed could spark improvement from Worldly Impact (Best Odds: $17.00), who has been just fair in two runs back from a break, starting off with a fourth to Quell at Randwick before not appearing to handle the Warwick Farm track when behind Felines. Last time she was at Canterbury, she was six lengths of Deep Field. Fair form for a race like this.
Race Six (4:40pm) : Vili’s Pies Handicap 1250m: Form Guide
Back Me: He might still be a maiden, but I am putting Happy Clapper (Best Odds: $3.60) on top. The form around him is just simply outstanding. On debut he ran third to Kirov, who is now over in Hong Kong. He then had his next two starts at Rosehill and ran close up behind Aussies Love Sport and Stamina, then ran third to subsequent Group l performer Savvy Nature. He had one run in 2014, back in February when second to Man Of Melody, a subsequent city performer. Trials leading up to this have been great and looks hard to beat first up.
Big Danger: Oxford Heart (Best Odds: $4.60) ran over this track/distance last time out and looked the winner with about 200m to go but was overhauled late by Excited Prince, who has franked that form by running well again. Drawn wide, but J Bowman riding hopefully will offset that.
Roughie: Lolavie (Best Odds: $26.00) is a talented mare who resumes for Paul Perry after a pretty good Winter, which ended with a run in the Tibbie, where she was only six lengths of the winner. Trial leading up to this was good, and the winner of that trial won on Saturday. She’ll need a good speed, but if that eventuates, she has a big finish on her, and she really races best when Thomas Huet is riding.
Race Seven (5:20pm) : TAB.com.au Handicap (70) 1550m: Form Guide
Back Me: Sons Of John (Best Odds: $3.20) was crunched in betting at good odds when racing over this track/distance a couple of weeks back and duly saluted, aided by a gun ride from Jeff Penza, who again makes the trek to ride the son of Oratorio. Draws to get a lovely sit and should prove hard to beat.
Big Danger: Sankara Spirit (Best Odds: $13.00) ran last Monday at Moruya in the Town Plate when running third to the impressive South Coast sprinter Jackaizane, beaten two lengths. Up to 1550m suits, gets gate one and Tommy Berry takes the ride. $9 look a touch overs.
Roughie: L’Academie De Joie (Best Odds: $21.00) absolutely toyed with them last time out at Canberra, making a midrace move, taking the lead on the home turn and just bolting clear to win and win with ridiculous ease. Comes back to town, and while he hasn’t been here for a while, he hasn’t raced any better, and this field isn’t overly strong.
