Nine races have been set down for Caulfield on Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out twelve metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:50) Unleash Your Neds Toolbox Hcp 1100m
I’m with 2 Jigsaw (Bet Now: $1.95 TOP ODDS) in the opener. Talented colt for Cindy Alderson that resumes and we have seen in recent weeks that the stable can get them to fire first up. This juvenile went down the Blue Diamond path in the Autumn and I thought was far from disgraced in the big dance behind Artorius. Jumped out well leading in and Mark Zahra is currently the in form rider in Melbourne at the moment.
1 Darceandermill (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) looks to have his share of ability. This colt has won both races back from a spell, the latest seeing him lead throughout at Mornington on the public holiday program over 1200m. Comes back to 1100m but gets Jamie Kah and will be on speed.
4 Tonneofgrit (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is a Team Hawkes trained juvenile that should get a lovely run from the draw. Tough on speed win over 1200m at Geelong last time out. He was there to be run down but found plenty when required and was too good. Not sure he has the class of some of these, but has got a strong grounding under the belt.
Race 2. (12:25) Neds Protest Payout Hcp 1200m
3 Bubbly Lass (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) should prove hard to beat here. Impressive winner of her maiden during the Warrnambool Carnival before going to Sandown two weeks ago where she was over a month between runs but she didn’t stop chasing when second to Comica. She’ll take good improvement from that and she appeals.
1 Diamonds (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is flying at the moment for Gemma Rielly. Put together a couple of sharp wins at 1200m before racing over 1300m her past couple where she has run very well, but hasn’t attacked the line like she did when at 1200m, so back to the six furlongs I see as a positive.
4 Jungle Sensation (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) should appreciate a rise to 1200m. This filly ran over 1000m at Mornington last Monday where she was back near last in the run but finished her race off with real purpose late I thought when a close up fourth to Passing Time. Like her up in trip and is a key chance in a tricky race.
Race 3. (13:00) Neds Toolbox Hcp 1000m
3 Esta La Roca (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a speed demon for Lloyd Kennewell. Resumed over 1000m at Sandown with sustained speed from the front coming to the fore in an electric return. Short course specialist that has great early toe and that is an ideal recipe for the 1000m start here.
2 All Of Brighton (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) should be suited in a fast run 1000m. Patrick Payne trained three year old that has raced down the straight at Flemington his past couple. Backed late and was impressive when winning two back before running third to Curran three weeks back. I think back to 1000m suits. Just needs to show more interest.
4 Forever Free (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) will put herself on speed and try hard. That was the case when racing at Sandown a fortnight back. She was there and tried hard, as she usually does. Just couldn’t quite finish it off. Reckon this is a better set up for her and she does have an ideal racing pattern.
Race 4. (13:35) Neds Price Boost (bm78) 1600m
9 Irish Playboy (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited up in trip for Henry Dwyer. Resumed over 1300m at Sandown two weeks ago where he paraded like he would need the run, the market said as much but despite that, I thought he ran a credible race behind Sir Kalahad. Good second up record and track should play more fairly.
7 Falls (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) will be hard to beat here. Track pattern was in his corner at Sandown two weeks ago, but that aside, he was still an impressive winner from the front and spanked his rivals. The question will be can he repeat the dose. If he runs up to a similar level, he’ll take beating.
17 Relucent (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) is racing well for Chris Waller but he doesn’t want the track too wet. He was good in defeat behind Falls at Sandown given the track pattern and the fact he isn’t as effective on heavy ground. The track, hopefully, won’t be as wet this time around, and he can run an improved race.
Race 5. (14:10) Take It To The Neds Level Hcp 1440m
2 Imperial Hilton (Bet Now: $4.00) is 2/2 this time in and I think he can make it 3/3. Admittedly he had the A1 run in transit last time out on the Parks track, but that aside, he was still an impressive winner the way he let down under Opperman. He’s heading in the right direction and can measure up here.
6 I’m Thunderstruck (Bet Now: $1.75) is a progressive three year old for the Price/Kent team. Did a good job in his first prep before being spelled. Resumed on testing ground at Sale where he looked a good thing on paper and although he wasn’t 100% on the heavy track, his class came to the fore. Keen to see how he goes in what looks a strong 3YO race.
There is a tail to this race, a long one. 11 Zoutellus (Bet Now: $21.00) could give cheek if on speed is the spot to be given he will be the likely leader and with only 51kg on his back, he could well take running down at a price despite being a few weeks between runs since a game effort behind Riot And Rose. One for multiples.
Race 6. (14:50) Neds Bet Back (bm84) 1100m
4 Absolute Flirt (Bet Now: $2.80) is a hard horse to catch but fresh is best for her and I think she can resume a winner. Team Hayes trained mare that hasn’t raced since Australia Day when a close up third to La Mexicana, who would be close to odds on in a race like this. Good fresh horse, should get three wide cover and launch late.
3 Propelle (Bet Now: $18.00) deserves another chance. Market knew the track pattern would be against her when she resumed at Sandown two weeks ago and it was proven right, but despite that, I thought she ran a credible race behind Zipping Boy. Back to Mares grade, she’s a key chance.
12 Fast ‘N’ Deep (Bet Now: $11.00) has put together a decent record to date and is worthy of a crack at metro level. Has won her past two, each win coming over 1000m at Cranbourne where she has been near the speed and fighting on strongly. Clearly a harder assignment here but like the way she’s going about it.
Race 7. (15:30) Neds Same Race Multi Hcp 2000m
10 Fifth Position (Bet Now: $4.00) looks cherry ripe for this assignment. Price/Kent trained import that has had two runs in Australia. Resumed with an eye catching effort during the Warrnambool Carnival before going to Flemington when tightened late in a blanket finish won by Lunar Flare. He’ll be better for that 2000m run under the belt and has upside.
5 Bedford (Bet Now: $4.40) is bursting to win a race this time in for Team Freedman and I reckon he gets his chance here. Thought he closed off very well two weeks ago at Sandown against the race/track pattern when second to a very well ridden No Effort. Hard fit, up to 2000m, he appeals big time.
2 Pacodali (Bet Now: $21.00) has the engine under the hood to give this a shake. Good in defeat two back in the R A Lee behind Lord Vladivostok at Morphettville before going to Sandown where the race shape just didn’t suit him at all behind No Effort. He can be an improver here at odds.
Race 8. (16:05) Neds (bm84) 1440m
11 Corner Pocket (Bet Now: $3.20) is going for six on the bounce. 3/3 this time in for the Lindsey Smith camp. Latest run came on May 23 at Sandown where he led throughout and though challenged strongly by Beehunter, he kicked when required and was too good. He’ll land on speed and give his all.
4 Viral (Bet Now: $23.00) can be an improver here. Market said he needed the run when resuming here a few weeks back and it was proven correct. He sat behind the speed and tried hard, but was just never really a threat. His best is good enough to figure, so give him another chance.
9 Jumbo Ozaki (Bet Now: $8.50) is a talented galloper for Danny O’Brien that resumes. He’s over 12 months between runs so has clearly had his issues but no doubting he has the talent under the hood to give this a shake. Last run came over 1400m at Caulfield when close up behind the then in form Heptagon. Loved his recent jumpout and if he’s anywhere near right, he can take this out.
Race 9. (16:38) Neds Filter Form (bm84) 1200m
Back to 1200m I do like for 9 Ocular (Bet Now: $6.50). Shea Eden trained gelding that is a few weeks between runs since racing over 1400m at Flemington where he probably found the trip a bridge too far but far from disgraced in defeat behind Yulong January. Like him at 1200m and lobs into a lovely spot from the draw under Ben Melham, who is riding well.
7 Ruban Bleu (Bet Now: $11.00) is in for a good prep. Resumed over 1000m at Sandown two weeks back where he was back in the run but closed off well nearer the inside when third to Zipping Boy. Yet to really run a bad race second up and up to 1200m, he’ll be hard to beat.
16 Excelida (Bet Now: $9.00) should be suited on a bending track for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Resumed over 1200m down the straight at Flemington in a sit/sprint. Never really a winning threat, but did warm to the task late and was pretty good I thought behind Bons Abroad. That form reads well for this.
