Caulfield will host their traditional Boxing Day meeting this Saturday, headlined by the Christmas Stakes (1200m) and Lord Stakes (1700m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:45) Home Of Outdoor Event Hcp 1200m
With 12 Picarones (Bet Now:Β $4.00 TOP ODDS) in the opener. James Cummings trained daughter of Shooting To Win that is on debut off the back of one jumpout, but it was an impressive jumpout, which saw her win and she looked to go about her business quite nicely with plenty in reserve. Olly sticks from the jumpout, draws soft and finds a thin-ish two year old race.
8 Yulong Jet (Bet Now:Β $4.00 TOP ODDS) is an I Am Invincible colt for the McEvoy camp that is on debut. The stable produced Yulong Turbo to win impressively at Morphettville two weeks ago and they have this guy having start one. His recent jumpout was more than encouraging and stable has the in form Lane to steer. Hard to beat.
5 Mr Scorefield (Bet Now:Β $8.50 TOP ODDS) has the hard race experience/fitness under the belt and that should hold him in good stead for this. He comes through the Profiteer race from Flemington. Kept chasing and finding the line, but didn’t have the brilliance to match it with them late. 1200m looks ideal and he draws well for Craig Williams.
Race 2. (13:20) Happy 50th C Aranibar (bm70) 1100m
6 Zoushine (Bet Now:Β $2.80 TOP ODDS) looks hard to beat for the McEvoy camp. Looked a good thing on paper when she raced at Morphettville a few weeks ago in a maiden, starting pretty much Winx like odds and won accordingly, dashing clear late to win by a space and did it with something in hand. Now she has a win on the board, she can go on with it.
2 Miss Divine Em (Bet Now:Β $11.00 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. Three weeks between runs for Patrick Payne since resuming on Pakenham Cup Day where she was near the speed throughout and battled away well when third to Written Miss, who won again last Saturday to frank the form. Fitter, like her up to 1100m and she does have a touch of quality when right.
4 Lariat (Bet Now:Β $8.50 TOP ODDS) has done a good job this time in for the Maher/Eustace team. She’s won two on the bounce, the latest coming under the lights at the Valley when outside the speed. Ben Allen controlled things beautifully in that spot and she was too good for them. Harder here, but like the way she’s going about it.
Race 3. (13:55) Ken Sturt (bm70) 1400m
3 Ayrton (Bet Now:Β $1.75 TOP ODDS) looks pretty sharp and I think he can make it 2/2 to start his career. Debuted over 1300m at Bendigo and what impressed me was the way he went through his gears, being very strong on the line and did it with something in hand. Off that, should have no drama at 1400m and looks an exciting prospect.
2 Beltoro (Bet Now:Β $4.60 TOP ODDS) looks quite a decent prospect and I think he can continue his winning ways. Debuted with an electric win at Bendigo before going to Flemington two weeks ago where he sat back off the speed before presenting wider and I loved the way he let down, charging clear late to win and win well. Good test here, but think he’s more than up to it.
Like 6 Standoff (Bet Now:Β $10.00 TOP ODDS) up to 1400m and think she can be a big improver here. Good late splits two back behind Sisstar before going to Flemington down the straight where she got back in the run and worked home okay without threatening behind the in form Paul’s Regret. Reckon back to a bending track and up in trip are two big ticks.
Race 4. (14:30) Frank O'brien (bm78) 1400m
Even allowing for the weight, 1 Viral (Bet Now:Β $4.80 TOP ODDS) has a bit on these in terms of class surely. Has been racing in 84/90 races in recent times and has been good without winning, the latest at Flemington when fourth to Mr Money Bags after sitting wide no cover. He has successfully carried 61kg to win so don’t think 62kg is too much of a concern.
Always respect a stable state switch so I’m on guard with 11 Promotions (Bet Now:Β $4.20 TOP ODDS). Reckon they rode him too warm at Randwick two weeks ago, which left him with not much left for the straight when a tiring fifth to I Am Vinnie. Interesting to see what they do from the barrier but does get Olly steering, so that helps.
9 Write Your Name (Bet Now:Β $8.00 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. Archie Alexander trained gelding that was good fresh at Ararat behind Titan Blinders before going to Rosehill where not much went his way and should have finished much closer behind He’s A Hotshot. He’s hit and miss but clearly his best is good enough to win.
Race 5. (15:10) Allan Wicks (bm70) 1200m
7 Score (Bet Now:Β $5.00) has come back in good order for John Sadler. Resumed with an eye catching fourth at Ballarat behind Snapdancer in what looks like a red hot form race. She then went to 1400m at Pakenham where she loomed to win, but she’s a mare who just doesn’t go a yard on wet tracks and the wheels were spinning late. Third up now, hard fit, she’s going to take some beating.
5 Don’tteltheboss (Bet Now:Β $5.00) rises a bit in grade/depth, but it was hard not to be impressed by her first up win at the Valley. Had to make a sustained run from the back and covering ground, but she was simply too good for them and impressive. Gets a lovely run from the gate and the claim for Lachie King helps once again.
Best version of 1 Chassis (Bet Now:Β $16.00) is capable. Too bad to be true fresh in a hot form race at Ballarat won by Snapdancer. Then went to Flemington two weeks ago and was okay late behind Paul’s Regret. Like her back to a bending track and with the claim for Will Price, she’s well in, so think she’s the value here.
Race 6. (15:50) Joe Brown (bm70) 1100m
Can see a stack of speed here, so want to be on a horse that will get three wide cover and launch late. Think one of those will be 3 Spirit Of Aquada (Bet Now:Β $10.00) so I’ll lean his way. Last time he won a race, I think rainbows were black and white. But you look back on his form from last prep…it was all in tougher races, whether it be 78, 90 or even the Group lll Sir John Monash. Host of gear changes and his recent Pakenham jumpout win was electric. I think he’s a great each way bet.
14 That Girl (Bet Now:Β $2.70) is second up here for Phillip Stokes and I think she can return to the winners list. Resumed over 1000m at Pakenham and found the line strongly in a fast run race won by stablemate Defiant Dancer. Second up record isn’t too flash, but comes out of a good race fresh and strikes a winnable assignment here.
8 Paperboy (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is going really well at the moment for John Price. Beat home a subsequent Saturday city winner two back at Pakenham before racing there again three weeks ago when back near last in the run off a fast speed and working home well when fourth to Defiant Dancer, who won last Saturday to tick the form off. Hard to beat.
Race 7. (16:30) Christmas Stakes 1200m
Very wary of 7 King Of Hastings (Bet Now:Β $4.60), resuming for Team Freedman. Hasn’t raced since the Creswick during the Winter when down the track behind the then boom horse Front Page. His recent jumpout was solid enough and is a good fresh horse, so I think the market will be the guide to his chances and how forward he is.
6 Tavisan (Bet Now:Β $8.00) is nearing a win for the Price/Kent team and has to be respected. He ran second to Sirius Suspect three weeks back at Pakenham when on speed and tried hard. Just couldn’t quite see it through, finishing second. He’ll land near the front again, on his home track and prove hard to run down.
1 Blazejowski (Bet Now:Β $18.00) deserves another chance. Greg Eurell trained gelding that trialled up like a jet prior to resuming down the straight at Flemington before going to the Kevin Heffernan at Sandown. Yes, he was wide no cover for the trip, but he still dropped out too quickly and was very disappointing. Freshened up, keen to see how he goes.
Race 8. (17:10) Lord Stakes 1700m
5 Mosh Music (Bet Now:Β $14.00) has a fab second up record and reckon she can be very dangerous here at odds. Resumed in the Gold Bullion at Pakenham and was good late despite being in restricted room behind the low flying Corstens galloper, The Astrologist. Fitter, up to 1700m, and with her sharp second up record, think she’s a live chance.
Hard to ignore 7 Tavidance (Bet Now:Β $2.30). Looked a good thing on paper three weeks ago at Pakenham and aided by a lovely ride from Olly, he got a suck run nearer the inside before angling into clear air and away he went to spank them. Now he has that confidence boosting win on the board, he could well go on with it and record a Stakes win. The knock is we are likely getting a rather firm deck and he hates that.
1 Night’s Watch (Bet Now:Β $13.00) looks to be enjoying life under Archie Alexander. Jumped out well prior to resuming at Pakenham where he had to lump 62kg and sit off a slow speed, but he worked home quite strongly when second to Tavidance. If he can naturally improve off that, think he’s hard to beat against this lot.
Race 9. (17:50) Dennis Hanrahan (bm78) 2000m
Hard to get away from 5 Zachaz (Bet Now:Β $4.20). The Maher/Eustace stable has this guy going super at the moment. Impressive win over the mile at Donald two back before proving that was no fluke with a strong win over 2000m on Pakenham Cup Day under a lovely ride from Clayton Douglas. He’s a horse that is in form and looks to find another winnable race.
4 Astraeus (Bet Now:Β $4.50) has been up a little while but is holding his form really well at the moment. Loved the way he toughed it out to win here last Wednesday, fending off a handy animal I reckon in Playoffs under a good front running steer from Lachie King. Gets a jockey upgrade with Nash taking over, should land near the front and prove hard to run down.
Jamie Kah can weave her magic with troubled horses…can she do it here with 13 Starcaster (Bet Now:Β $16.00). Think her soft hands and balance is the last throw at the stumps with this import, who quite frankly has been awful since arriving from overseas. Has teased to be a good horse but just hasn’t gone on with it. His best is good enough to go close. Is Jamie Kah the missing piece?
