Eight races have been set down for Caulfield on Australia Day. Weather is fine, track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:20) Tile Importer Trophy (64) 2400m
6 Untethered (Bet Now:ย $6.00) is knocking on the door to win and seems to have found a winnable race here IMO. This guy has been runner up his past three, the latest over 2100m at Sandown where he attempted to lead throughout and he gave a very strong kick but couldn’t quite see it through when run down late by a nice horse in Unusual Pearl. Drawn wide, but should find the top and from there, prove hard to run down.
5 Northern Barrage (Bet Now:ย $7.50) is fourth up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. He ran down the track behind Unusual Pearl in the race mentioned above, failing to make up any real headway in a plain effort. Blinkers on first time to sharpen him and his best has lengths on these. Just needs to show it on race day.
7 Entitled Princess (Bet Now:ย $23.00) commands respect at odds for Stephen Brown. She ran at Cranbourne last time and her win was massive I thought given she was wide no cover throughout but she was strongest late and actually was drawing clear. Harder here, but she is very genuine and gets in pretty well at the weights after the claim.
Race 2. (13:55) The Mary Bell (70) 1400m
3 Eternal Flame (Bet Now:ย $2.90) has plenty on these and IMO, she’s the good thing across the country for Australia Day. She resumed in the Black Pearl at Geelong and was very good from near last, beaten 3.4L by Va Via. Fitter, up to 1400m, back miles in grade/depth, D Lane on…good luck beating her I’d suggest.
6 Versilia (Bet Now:ย $6.00) should be around the mark for Danny O’Brien. This mare resumed over this track/distance on Boxing Day where she was near the speed throughout and seemingly had her chance but couldn’t quite finish it off behind Vagrant. Should lob near the front comfortably and with upside, she is in the mix.
5 The Marg Factor (Bet Now:ย $15.00) is the likely leader and will give cheek. She resumed at Cranbourne where she got complete control in front and gave a solid kick but couldn’t quite see it through, with condition running out late behind Signal. Better for that run under the belt and with her racing style, she’ll give herself every chance.
Race 3. (14:30) Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) 1000m
6 Mind Shift (Bet Now:ย $6.00) look a nice filly for Team Freedman. She jumped out at Mornington where she got back off the speed and was wide throughout but under no riding, she closed off with real purpose when running second, seemingly having plenty to offer. Stable are going nicely with their juveniles and she looks as if she will be strong late.
1 Hayasugi (Bet Now:ย $5.50) is a Clinton McDonald trained filly that resumes. She had a two run Spring prep to start her career and was solid each time, the latest run being on Oaks Day at Flemington behind Karavas in the Ottawa. Couple of jumpouts have been solid enough to my eye and with race experience, she commands respect.
2 Bella Corazon (Bet Now:ย $6.00) is a daughter of I Am Invincible for Annabel Neasham that is on debut. This girl has had two trials in Sydney to get ready for start one, winning her latest at Rosehill narrowly but seemingly moved well enough and ran solid time. Early market push is encouraging and gets a good draw so watch the market.
Race 4. (15:05) Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) 1000m
Keen on 6 Innervisions (Bet Now:ย $3.90), who is on debut for Annabel Neasham. He won his recent trial at Rosehill by a space and what impressed me is that when asked for the effort, he responded, showed change up speed and drew clear late. He looks a good mover, he should land near the front and take running down.
4 High Octane (Bet Now:ย $3.10) is a well bred for Team Snowden that is on debut. The market push throughout this week has been sustained and he’s now a short priced favourite. He has looked very impressive in trial work in Sydney to prepare for a Blue Diamond assault, the latest trial being a sharp piece of work at Canterbury. The last 10-15 minutes of betting will tell you if he’s a good thing as the market suggests he is.
10 Wonder Step (Bet Now:ย $51.00) is a son of Shalaa for Team Hayes. He contested a recent jumpout here where he was on speed and was pushed out for an effort. He did respond well enough and tired late. Stable have had a fab season with their juveniles so I think watch the market and see what it does.
Race 5. (15:40) WJ Adams Stakes 1000m
Looks to be a stack of early speed here, some of which includes 5 Queman (Bet Now:ย $7.00), but he is a beauty for Team Oxlade who is a 1000m specialist and is a bomb on the fresh side. He hasn’t raced since Nov 25 when a tired horse, finishing down the track in the Gytrash Final behind Validated. Two sharp jumpout wins under the belt tells me there is intent and a chance to prove himself as a possible Oakleigh Plate contender.
6 Va Via (Bet Now:ย $3.30) comes back to 1000m from 1200m but James Cummings has her humming. That 1200m run came at Geelong in the Black Pearl where she got into a dream spot behind the speed before angling clear and she let down with a brilliant finale to win and win well. Hot speed in front, she’ll get her chance to finish over the top.
3 Indian Pacific (Bet Now:ย $17.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Neville Parnham, he now finds himself with Nick Ryan. He is getting on in years but he has shown for a few seasons he can measure up at this level in Melbourne and we know Nick Ryan can improve a tried horse so watch the market and see if it is in his corner.
Race 6. (16:20) Manfred Stakes 1200m
4 Carbonados (Bet Now:ย $3.80), I think, could be a Group l horse so I am very keen to see how he measures up in a race like this. Australian debut came at Geelong where the market said he had three legs but really, the win was pretty much like another jumpout for him. It was arrogant. He’ll eat up 1200m, potentially further, enormous upside, good racing style…keen.
2 Steparty (Bet Now:ย $2.25) is a beauty for Paul Preusker that resumes. He was unbeaten leading into the Caulfield Guineas where he seemingly had every chance but was still as game as ever when third to Griff. Moved well in a recent trial and it will be fascinating to see if he is being trained as a miler or as a sprinter. If it’s the latter, he can explode.
1 King Colorado (Bet Now:ย $10.00) is a quality Group l winner that resumes for Maher/Eustace. He had a frustrating Spring prep, which ended with a down the track effort in the Cox Plate where he was ridden horrendous and was a beaten horse a long way out. 1200m is on the short side but M Zahra booked fresh signals some level of intent.
Race 7. (17:00) John Dillon Stakes 1400m
6 Yonce (Bet Now:ย $6.00) is a high class mare and I think with the run under the belt, she’ll take beating against these. She resumed in the Christmas Stakes here on Boxing Day where she just found the 1100m fresh off a long spell too sharp behind a beauty in Sghirripa. Fitter, up in trip, she has runs on the board…I think she’ll run a big race.
2 Buffalo River (Bet Now:ย $5.00) will jump on the bunny and take running down. This guy hasn’t raced since the Rupert Clarke where he went too hard in front and was a beaten horse a fair way out, finishing tailed off behind Magic Time. This looks more his level and with some form of front end control, he’ll be hard to get past.
7 Pascero (Bet Now:ย $12.00) is a knockout hope. He comes through the Chester Manifold at Flemington where he seemingly had every chance but that said, he wasn’t beaten too far behind Not An Option. Not sure I could back him to win personally, but I feel for exotics, he must be entertained.
Race 8. (17:40) Nick Johnstone Real Estate Handicap (78) 1400m
7 Fortunate Kiss (Bet Now:ย $7.50) doesn’t have the best of racing patterns but if she’s within range on the turn, she has the finale to launch, as seen when winning first up at Bendigo. Then was flat second up in the How Now before going to The Valley where she got back and ran on well without threatening. Like her up to 1400m and with a drag into the race, she can finish over the top.
14 Mable Arch (Bet Now:ย $7.50) should be suited up to 1400m. Team Hayes trained mare that resumed three weeks back in the Black Pearl at Geelong where she got back in the run and while she was never a threat, she made up solid headway in a pleasing return behind Va Via. Much better set up this time around and has more upside than most.
3 Riverplate (Bet Now:ย $12.00) is an improver at odds for Busuttin/Young. He resumed at this track/distance on Boxing Day and was too bad to be true, tailed off last behind Lounge Bar Rubi. Something was clearly amiss so he’s had the freshen up and his best is good enough to be dangerous.
