Caulfield will host their traditional Australia Day meeting on Wednesday, with several blacktype races across the eight event meeting. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:20) Neds Blue Diamond Preview (c&g) 1000m
1 PhilosopherΒ (Bet Now:Β $2.05) is the straight bat option in the opener. Ran good overall time when a debut winner at this track/distance just over two weeks ago, leading throughout under Ollie, who fired him out of the gates to get the lead and found under pressure to win well. Not sure he’s Blue Diamond quality, but I think he has the brilliance to take this out.
2 Rampant LionΒ (Bet Now:Β $2.70) is a son of Frankel for Peter Moody that resumes. He debuted down the Flemington straight in the Maribyrnong Trial and closed off strongly from off the speed when third to impressive winner Get In The Spirit. Sharp trial win at Pakenham to get ready…not sure 1000m is his trip, but he’ll be strong late.
6 Thron BoneΒ (Bet Now:Β $26.00) is a Thronum gelding on debut for Jerome Hunter. He won a recent Sandown jumpout in okay style. Went about his business well enough when winning, albeit the time was nothing flash. Stable finds Williams to steer, so I’d watch the market with him.
Race 2. (13:55) Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) 1000m
1 LatiziaΒ (Bet Now:Β $4.00) on top in a tricky race. This girl debuted down the Flemington straight and she was a real professional. leading most of the way under a confident steer from Johnny Allen, who remains on for this. Wide draw, but has early speed and it’s only the one turn so sitting wide is no massive disadvantage.
5 JewelleryΒ (Bet Now:Β $3.90) looks a smart filly. Just got out of her ground on debut here but finished off with real purpose when second to Philosopher, producing the best last 200m of the meeting. You’d like to think she will take good improvement off that. Just whether she wants further now.
14 Written SwooshΒ (Bet Now:Β $13.00) is a first starter I can entertain at odds. Phillip Stokes trains this filly, who has won a couple of Pakenham jumpouts. The latest saw her sit off the speed before being presented wider and she went about her business quite nicely I felt. Draws soft and stable can get them to fire early.
Race 3. (14:30) Evergreen Turf (bm70) 1100m
Looks to be good speed here so I want to be on one that will be strong late and 6 SuricateΒ (Bet Now:Β $5.00) will be that. Resumes for Team Freedman after a debut maiden win at Benalla back in June where she got better as the race went on. That was the case in her recent Werribee jumpout, so I think she’ll appreciate the genuine tempo here and charge at the end.
3 For Real LifeΒ (Bet Now:Β $4.60) is another that will have no issue with a truly run 1100m given she’s had a couple of 1200m lead ups under the belt, the latest coming at The Valley when second to Danny’s St Darci. Has the right form around her to give this a shake and Ollie sticks.
8 No CryingΒ (Bet Now:Β $17.00) deserves another look. This filly debuted with an impressive maiden win at Moe before racing here where the saddle shifted shortly after beginning and she took no competitive part. She draws to do no work behind a good speed and off the fresh win, she’s in the mix.
Race 4. (15:05) WJ Adams Stakes 1000m
2 Streetcar StrangerΒ (Bet Now:Β $5.00) is the one, purely from a map perspective. This guy has been kept on ice since the Doveton where he ran a narrow second to Enthaar, closing off strongly late. He will get the A1 run in transit, stalking Enthaar and co. If he gets clear air, I think he’ll finish best.
3 EnthaarΒ (Bet Now:Β $1.65) is probably on trial here for an Oakleigh Plate berth. Lot of quality about her win in the Doveton in a welcomed return to form after a somewhat indifferent fresh effort. If she can take this out and beat the older horses again, she’s going to the Oakleigh Plate I dare say. Just needs to handle copping heat on speed.
If they do go silly in front, 4 Mossman GorgeΒ (Bet Now:Β $9.00) is the horse that should get last look. He hasn’t raced since Gong Day at Kembla when a close up fifth in The Warra behind Eleven Eleven, and we know how strong that form is. Liked his trial win at Canberra and he’ll love the speed in front to launch late.
Race 5. (15:40) Mccafe (bm84) 2000m
Happy to have a 1×3 speck on 9 Kings Full (Bet Now:Β $17.00) for Aaron Purcell. Market said it was a prep run fresh at the Bool in the Koroit Cup and that is how it panned out, but his final 75m or so, he was hitting the line okay. He’ll love the rise to 2000m and if he gets a cheap lead, he’ll run a bold race at odds.
5 Somerset Maugham… (Bet Now:Β $4.20) beware the unlucky horse in a poor race. I think he was indeed unlucky in a poor race at Flemington when second to Dark Dream. I say unlucky because he was held up but he was out in plenty of time to wear down that horse. He’s had a couple of runs now at the mile. I think up to 2000m suits and he’s knocking on the door. Just think he’ll SP too short.
10 Unique Artist (Bet Now:Β $2.90) has a real love affair with the 2000m and that continued at Flemington on New Years Day. Was put into a plum spot under Daniel Moor and once it came to the button being pushed, there was a good response and he was strong to the line in winning. Has to be respected here.
Race 6. (16:20) John Dillon Stakes 1400m
I’m not 100% convinced that Caulfield will suit 4 Lighthouse (Bet Now:Β $2.00) but it’s hard to get away from her and what she has done to date in Australia since arriving from America. Loved the way she dug in to win the Chester Manifold last time given she had to work for it but she got better as the race went. Have to be in her corner.
5 Open Minded (Bet Now:Β $4.00) is a Caulfield specialist and maps super from the gate. He spanked them at this track/distance last time out, albeit at benchmark level, but still, a sharp display from the front, and good enough to suggest he runs well. Just will be interesting what tactics they use.
8 Excelida (Bet Now:Β $9.00) is a Team Hayes trained mare that could find herself in NZ for some blacktype races with a strong showing here. Impressive win from the back when getting the job done here on Boxing Day, coming with a very well timed run under Mick Dee. Fitter, she commands respect.
Race 7. (17:00) Tile Importer (bm70) 1400m
12 Thunder Point (Bet Now:Β $4.60) for me. Progressive gelding for Symon Wilde that was ridden positively by Linda Meech at the Bool last time and the end result was a spank job of his rivals, landing big bets in the process. Stable thinks he is metro class and despite drawing wide, I think he presses forward, likely leads and will take running down.
1 Over The Sky (Bet Now:Β $9.00) is a quality animal for the Price/Kent camp that resumes. Hasn’t raced since June 26 when seemingly getting every chance but failing to finish off as well as most had expected when third to Ballet Master. 1400m is a tad on the short side but has quality.
5 Show Some Decorum (Bet Now:Β $19.00) as returned in good order for Team Freedman. Resumed with a strong win at The Valley before going to Stawel where he did far too much work in the run but was far from disgraced in defeat behind Libbyangel. Gets in okay after the claim and does no work from the gate.
Race 8. (17:40) The Mary Bell (bm70) 1400m
First time at Caulfield is the only thing stopping me from declaring 9 Yonce (Bet Now:Β $2.10) the bet of the month. She seems quite a big gross mare so how she gets around Caulfield will be intriguing, but there is no doubting she has Stakes talent, potentially Group l talent. Stunning in both career starts/wins and all things being equal, she’ll make it 3/3.
1 Comica (Bet Now:Β $7.00) looks to be in for a good prep. Resumed in the Vespertine race at Caulfield where she dashed and was hailed as the winner, only for Vespertine to get the narrow split, drive hard late and win. Fitter and up in trip for this mare, I think she has to be respected off such a good return.
10 Wegobam (Bet Now:Β $8.50) is a first four contender. Team Corstens trained mare that ran over 1400m at Sandown last time where she was there to win but couldn’t peg back the margin on Yonce, who I think is Stakes class, so that form should stack up quite nicely for this. Runs well, doubt she turns the tables.
