A cracking meeting has been assembled for Geelong Cup Day on Wednesday with the 2400m feature being a good guide to the Melbourne in the past. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:30) B & B Aluminium Products Handicap (64) 1400m
7 Star Major (Bet Now: $4.60) on top in a really good 64 contest. This son of Starcraft for Shea Eden debuted at Sale in June and he absolutely bolted in under Brad Rawiller, spanking his rivals and running slick time for the day. Six of the 13 rivals that day have won since and a recent jumpout at Cranbourne looked very encouraging to my eye. Looks ready to go.
8 Artistic Design (Bet Now: $13.00) is a smart looking gelding that resumes for the Busuttin/Young team. He hasn’t raced since this time last year where he ran three times to kick off his career, ending that prep with a maiden win at Kilmore on Cup Day. He was with Team Freedman but is now based at Cranbourne and his two trials leading in have been quite encouraging.
3 Muccino (Bet Now: $31.00) is a tough son of Stryker for the Cozamanis team who had market support when resuming over 1200m at Ballarat but just looked in need of the run when sixth to He’s A Moral. Does have a solid second up record, likes the 1400m and has run well at Geelong before. Must for exotics.
Race 2. (13:00) IGA Liquor Handicap (78) 2400m
3 Ubin Thunderstruck (Bet Now: $3.50) is a tough conveyance for the Weir team who ran over 2000m at Ballarat last time out and probably just got a bit too far back off the pace under Ethan Brown but he closed off well late in the piece behind Tiger Tim. Up to 2400m is perfect given last time he was there he won and beat a then Melbourne Cup aspirant in Crocodile Rock.
1 Tiger Tim (Bet Now: $3.90) won that race mentioned above and I thought his win was dominant. That was his third run since coming to Australia and he absolutely spanked them under Dean Yendall, who remains on. On that effort, he’ll eat up the 2400m here. Not that much of a weight swing against him and he has upside.
7 Ascot Red (Bet Now: $6.00) hadn’t won for a little while but he was given an absolute peach from Jamie Mott to win over 2200m at Ballarat last start. He didn’t panic as the tearaway leader set up a margin. He did his own thing, comfortably dragged the field up, put the leader away and gee he was strong on the line. No problems with 2400m and does have upside.
Race 3. (13:35) No Fuss Event Hire Handicap (70) 1700m
4 Knight Star (Bet Now: $9.50) is the big improver here for mine at odds. Worked home with purpose against the pattern first up at Cranbourne before going to Seymour where he continued his tradition of racing flat second up. He has only had one third up one before and that day he clocked the fastest late splits of the meeting from the back. Big watch.
2 Beach Life (Bet Now: $3.20) was given a sweet ride by Ethan Brown to win over 1500m here two back before going to Mornington on Grand Final Day where nothing really went right for the horse. He was back in a slowly run race, held up…it was just an ugly watch and a total forgive. Up to the 1700m here with Zahra on, he can bounce back.
9 Cadabra (Bet Now: $6.50) is the interesting runner here. Has to go up a level or two on what she has been racing against in recent times, but you had to love her win last time at Ballarat. She was put to sleep out the back under Michael Walker. Trucked up sweetly, got the split and once she clicked her up, it was game over. No issue with 1700m and she has the turn of foot to beat these.
Race 4. (14:10) Geelong Australia Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Series Heat 5 (78) 1500m
Pretty even race but landed with 3 Emoji (Bet Now: $3.80). He ran over 1500m at Mornington on Grand Final Day where he sat near the speed under Ethan Brown and tried very hard but had to settle for second to Gold Fields. He meets that horse 3kg better off for a 2L defeat and he maps okay out wide to press forward. Not much confidence, but he’s on top.
7 Freshwater Storm (Bet Now: $6.50) is an absolute beauty for the Tony Parker camp. He has been given a slight freshen up since placing in the Gold Nugget at Ballarat where he sat near the speed and stuck on really behind the very promising Kiwia, who came out and won the Coongy on Saturday, so the form reads very well for this.
12 Captain Rhett (Bet Now: $8.50) didn’t do much fresh behind Princeton Spirit at the Valley but was much better next time out at Cranbourne where he got the split and looked the winner but his condition just gave out and was beaten by an in form sprinter, Rock Of Mahal. Up to 1500m looks ideal and his Winter form stacks up nicely.
Race 5. (14:45) Shojun Concrete Dual Choice Plate (84) 1200m
12 Urban Ruler (Bet Now: $2.60) is a talented son of Street Boss first up for the Greg Eurell yard. This horse was a tease early on in his career but it all changed under lights at Pakenham on the Synthetic and he went right on with it subsequent, eventually placing in the Silver Bowl Final. Jump outs have been quite encouraging and he is a bomb when produced fresh.
11 Kievann (Bet Now: $9.20) is the interesting runner here. Stephen Brown trained sprinter who is first up here after a disappointing campaign in Darwin. His jump outs have been quite good and the big ticks for him here is the give in the track, he maps well and he finds Bowman from a good draw. Definite winning chance.
7 Strike Force (Bet Now: $17.00) is a talented gelding that resumes for the Mike Moroney yard. He raced three times during the Winter, with the highlight being a win at Sale with two okay runs in town beginning and ending the prep. Like what I have seen from him too at the jump outs and he is a horse who will love that cushion in the track.
Race 6. (15:20) Roderick Insurance Brokers Geelong Classic 2200m
6 Weather With You (Bet Now: $10.00) gets one more chance for me to stamp himself as a Derby horse. His three runs in Australia this prep have been good but I would have liked to see him do a bit more to scream out he is a Derby horse. UCI run was solid but I think he is looking for further, which he gets here, and the big tick is the blinkers on first time.
The blinkers on first time worked wonders for 2 Savaheat (Bet Now: $4.20) in the Hill Smith at Morphettville. He was an alarming drifter though, out to $15 from $8, but he was very impressive under John Allen. Came from last, rounded them up, dashed away and held a decent margin. On that effort, he’ll eat up the trip and the blinkers look to have really sparked him into life.
11 Ocean’s Fourteen (Bet Now: $9.00) is the watch horse. Son of Ocean Park for the Aaron Purcell team who broke the maiden tag a tick under two weeks back at Donald but the manner in which he did it was very impressive and he ran okay time for the meeting. He’ll eat up the 2200m here, he has upside and the stable…you can’t ignore anything they are saddling up.
Race 7. (16:00) Bet365 Geelong Cup 2400m
4 Gallic Chieftain (Bet Now: $3.10) finds a lovely race here to break the duck for the Spring. Unbelievable effort against the bias two back in the JRA Cup behind Jon Snow before going to the Herbert Power where he had to do a fair bit of chasing due to the brutal speed and he kept coming when third to Lord Fandango. Both races were good form references for the Caulfield Cup. Surely that’s good enough to beat these.
11 Wheal Leisure (Bet Now: $7.50) is a mare who is absolutely low flying at the moment for the Archie Alexander team. Came with a brilliant finishing burst to nab Herbert Power winner Lord Fandango first up at Bendigo before racing in the Inglis Cup at Caulfield and overhauling Hardham. Poorly weighted, but hard to knock a mare in form.
1 Gallante (Bet Now: $21.00) could be an improver here. I think he has to be forgiven for his first up flop in the Naturalism a few weeks back due to the rock hard track and Mallyon said that post race. He will love getting a track with cushion in it, if he gets it, and on his best form, he certainly can fill a place. Highly doubt he beats these.
Race 8. (16:40) Rosemont Stud Stakes 1200m
If ever there was a certainty on weights, it’s 3 Ghisoni (Bet Now: $4.80). Rated nearly 20 ratings points better than any other runner yet gets in on the minimum. Resumed in the Golden Pendant and that was a day at Rosehill where making significant ground was difficult. Freshened up and her recent trial was outstanding. If she overcomes the draw, she wins.
16 Crystal Fountain (Bet Now: $7.00) is an absolute beauty for the Freedman camp. Been kept on ice since resuming on August 9 at Geelong where she was given a lovely ride from Zahra and pounced on the lead before drawing clear. Loved her trial recently at Cranbourne, and you can’t knock winners, which is what she is.
I think 11 Written Era (Bet Now: $9.00) is the big improver here back to 1200m. Aaron Purcell has stepped her out to 1400m at her past two in the Let’s Elope and Blazer and while she has run well, she hasn’t erally attacked the line like we know she can. Significant drop in grade for her here and if she gets tempo in front of her, she’ll launch.
Race 9. (17:20) Jack Rabbit Vineyard Handicap (70) 1200m
5 Harbour Grey (Bet Now: $21.00) is the big watch here. Stephen Brown trained sprinter that is first up here since the Winter where he bolted up on the Parks track before going to the Palmerston North lead up at Darwin and being a flop behind Ticket To Toorak. He has been trialling up well at Flemington, he likes Geelong and is a noted fresh performer.
7 Ajani (Bet Now: $8.50) looks a safe way to go here. Team Snowden trained gelding who has been really good since coming to Victoria. His latest run came over 1200m at Mornington on Grand Final Day where he attempted to lead all the way under Jamie Mott and did give a kick but just faded late behind See Me Fly. Does tend to race better on the fresh side so the extra few days off should be ideal for this four year old.
9 Bord De Gain (Bet Now: $4.20) is a talented son of Moshe for the Mark Kavanagh team who resumed down the straight at Flemington on the midweek program and he loomed to win the race, looking the winner for a few strides but his condition just gave out late when third to I’m Telling Ya. Beat up city performers second up last time in which does read very well for this.
