Nine races will be run and won at Doomben on Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out a half metre for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:53) Welcome Back To Brc Hcp 1200m
Looking at this meeting with an assumption it will be a heavy track due to the rain forecast for the next couple of days. 2 Acrobatic (Bet Now: $3.00) looks the one to beat for Kelly Schweida. Trialled up really well prior to resuming at this track/distance where he was short odds and justified the quote with a commanding performance from near the speed, albeit he did get a soft time of it on speed and turned it into a dash home. Harder here, but he looks to have the most progression.
Think there’s good improvement to come from 1 Boom Spender (Bet Now: $4.60). Desleigh Forster trained juvenile that resumed last Wednesday at Eagle Farm when near the speed throughout and tried hard, but couldn’t quite get there when a narrow second to the well performed Hancora Field. Fitter, up to 1200m, he’s likeable.
4 Mishani Fraudster (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Les Ross trained juvenile that was too sharp for them at the Sunny Coast two back before racing there again two weeks ago where he was comfortably beaten by Kisukano but was far from disgraced I thought given how highly she is rated. Back to his own sex against the boys, he can improve for sure.
Race 2. (12:28) Quincy Hcp 1200m
1 Kisukano (Bet Now: $1.90) looks the standout. From all reports she lit up the Toowoomba turf in a jumpout prior to her resumption at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago and admittedly, didn’t beat a great deal, but the win was outstanding given Du Plessis had to push the button a couple of times in the run but she still spanked them. Fitter, up to 1200m, looks the winner.
5 Toorooloo (Bet Now: $2.70) is a big watch here. David Vandyke trained filly that was well backed when debuting at this track/distance at the midweeks and the bets were landed. Gee she was impressive in putting them away and ran much quicker overall time than the 2YO Boys race on the same day. Always have to respect the stable and this girl does look talented.
10 Country Showgirl (Bet Now: $21.00) will win a race sooner rather than later. Kevin Kemp trained filly that is still a maiden after four starts but she’s showed enough to suggest a win isn’t far off. Ran at the Sunny Coast a fortnight back where she was near last in the run but really liked the way she finished off behind Kisukano. She runs well again but if she dropped to maiden grade, she’d be a certainty.
Race 3. (13:03) Tab Long May We Play Hcp 1600m
Think it’s a good map for 6 Prince Of Tie (Bet Now: $5.00) and I’ll gamble on him leading throughout. Led throughout to win two weeks ago at the Sunny Coast over 1400m and I thought there was good merit in his performance. Was there to be run down but he kept fighting and clung on. 1600m should be fine, down in the weights and looks the only leader. Wet track no issue.
It has been a while since 2 Right Or Wrong (Bet Now: $2.80) has stepped out to the mile but he gets it here. Ran last Saturday over 1350m at Ipswich and I’m always one that is a tick for initiative instead of waiting, so on face value, the tactics to push the button down the side was odd, he had to because they were walking. Stewart on, up to 1600m are ticks. Just whether or not he can handle the quick back up.
Not sure 7 Outraged (Bet Now: $21.00) wins but can certainly include him in multiples. He was second up in the Glasshouse at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago and I thought he stuck to the task pretty well in defeat given he was outclassed on paper and 1400m is clearly not an ideal trip. Nor is 1600m, but it’s a rise in distance and think he’s going well.
Race 4. (13:38) Xxxx Dry Plate (c6) 1200m
The jockey upgrade is very significant when it comes to 4 Ditmas (Bet Now: $4.80). He resumed over 1000m at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago when not much went his way but he was still only a length away when fifth to the in form Tullio. Brad Stewart going on is a big, big tick and though his record suggests he’s better over shorter, I like him up to 1200m.
2 Elixir (Bet Now: $3.40) is racing so well at the moment for Les Kelly and just can’t go past him. On the seven day back up after racing over 1350m at Ipswich last Saturday where he was part of an early speed battle and when the sprint went on, just left a bit flat footed, but picked up to get to the leaders, only to be left a sitting shot for the swoopers aka Wren’s Day. 1200m is his trip and only has to hold his form to go close.
10 Kylease… (Bet Now: $4.20) I can’t work her out. They tried riding her cold and that didn’t work, so they scrapped those tactics over 1200m at Rosehill a few weeks ago, letting her run at a high cruising speed and she gave a sight, but couldn’t sustain it when down the track behind Kordia. Now with Steve O’Dea, and back to this level I do like, provided they use the same tactics as last time.
Race 5. (14:17) Brc Membership Renewal (bm78) 2000m
14 Speaking Bad (Bet Now: $8.00) is certainly capable for Gary Duncan. On the quick back up after racing on Sunday at the Sunny Coast over the mile when okay late behind Capeos. That was her first run in a few weeks, so you’d like to think there is improvement to come, like her up in trip and she has run well on the quick turnaround before.
6 Dissolution (Bet Now: $4.20) is suited back to 2000m I feel. David Vandyke trained gelding who has raced over 2200m at his past couple and I just don’t think he runs out the trip, the latest of those runs coming three weeks ago at Eagle Farm behind impressive winner Humbolt Current. Like him back in trip and can bounce back here.
I am very wary of 13 He Runs Away (Bet Now: $15.00), a former Hong Kong galloper that has had a few runs in Australia for Chris Waller. He was there to threaten last time out at Randwick but the last 150-200m, he just felt the pinch late behind Tigre Royale. Back to 2000m and back big time in depth I do like, and if he handles wet ground, he can run a big race at odds.
Race 6. (14:57) Kirin (bm90) 1050m
6 Defence Missile (Bet Now: $6.50) isn’t far off another win for Les Ross I feel. Ran over 1000m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago when specked at a price and he ran well after doing a bit of early work, finishing third to Royal Witness. He’s better suited at Doomben IMO and the forecast for heavy rain will be music to his ears. Hard to beat.
12 Tullio (Bet Now: $4.00) has done nothing wrong in three runs back from a spell for the Tony Gollan camp. Has won all three outings, the latest coming at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago when finishing best from off the pace to get up and nab Musical Genius right on the peg. Creeping up in depth, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
Giving respect to 4 Jardin Rouge (Bet Now: $8.00) here. Talented mare for Brian Wakefield that resumes, having not raced since May 15 at the Sunny Coast when back and making up good ground late nearer the inside when a close up third to Winter Passage. Good fresh horse, liked the recent trial win and finds a winnable race.
Race 7. (15:37) Tab Long May We Play Hcp 1200m
9 Say Haya (Bet Now: $4.00) on top. Tony Gollan trained filly that hasn’t raced since June 20 when bolting up over this track/distance on testing ground, but she made a mess of them and the form out of it has been good. Been kept on the fresh side but tuned up with a sharp trial win last Tuesday when leading throughout and cruised to the line. Hard to beat.
Back to 1200m with fresh legs, I’m giving respect to the Team Edmonds filly 8 Maozi (Bet Now: $4.50). Narrow second to Command’N’Conquer over 1400m at the Gold Coast before going to the 1350m at Doomben where she got a bit too far back in the run but closed off strongly to run third to the well backed Shijin. If they go hard here, she can certainly finish over the top.
1 Bold Style (Bet Now: $12.00) is an absolute beauty for Garnett Taylor that tries hard every time he steps out. Had to really knuckle down at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago but surged hard late and was able to wear down Gideons in a very close photo finish. Little query at 1200m, but is racing as if it will be fine, hard fit and in form.
Race 8. (16:13) Moet & Chandon (rs0mw) 1350m
10 Arthur In Charge (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Chris Munce trained three year old that is racing well. Closed off nicely two back here behind Starla before stepping up to 1400m at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago and was okay without being great behind dominant winner Cloak. Like him back to this track/distance, hard fit and racing in good form.
8 She Za Boss (Bet Now: $5.50) is likely better suited on firmer footing but Team Edmonds has this mare flying, winning her past two, with the latest coming at this track/distance when wide throughout and was entitled to drop away, but she ambled to the front and dashed clear for a dominant win. If this was a dry track, comfortably on top. Just the wet track has me concerned.
12 Love Struck (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of Love Conquers All for Scott Morrisey that comes through the Love Squirrels race from four weeks back at Doomben. He was back in the run and thought he worked home strongly to run third to the mare. He’s a two time second up winner and off that resumption, he could easily become a three time second up winner.
Race 9. (16:49) #bneraces Hcp 1600m
I have to be with 11 Roman Aureus (Bet Now: $5.50). Was on him last Saturday at Ipswich and I think less said about the ride the better. Loved the way he found the line against the pattern of the day and it confirms he’s in career best form. Larry jumps back on, sits off what looks a good speed and he’ll handle wet ground. Hard to beat.
2 Wapiti (Bet Now: $2.70) has seemingly been in work forever but gee he continues to race so well. Looked gone in the Winx Guineas but Cormack somehow lifted him the last 75m and he was strongest to the line in getting the job done. How much upside does he have left? None, but if he holds his form, he’s hard to beat.
8 Love Express (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Love Conquers All for Gary Duncan that was excellent in the Winx Guineas two weeks ago. Sat back in the run before slicing his way through the field and tried hard late, just missing out and finishing third. Now he’s had the 1600m run under the belt, should be better off for that and is hard to beat.
