Group l racing returns to Eagle Farm this Saturday where it is Kingsford-Smith Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:10) Kirin Handicap (90) 1200m
Think it will take a pretty decent effort to knock off 6 Noble Boy (Bet Now: $1.55) , who comes here for a two run prep off the back of an outstanding Autumn, clearly highlighted by his dominant Country Championships Final triumph under a sweet steer from Bowman. Been freshened up, but looked really sharp in a piece of work recently at Queanbeyan and Todd has told me the horse is thriving in Queensland. He wins barring bad luck.
7 Ef Troop (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Tony Gollan trained three year old who had question marks hanging over him when he resumed over 1200m at Doomben two weeks ago but thanks to a lovely on speed steer from Lloyd, he clung on and got the win. Still have doubts on him at a strong 1200m, especially in a race with more depth, but should improve re fitness and has class/quality.
It’s deep end stuff with 19 Beau Arrow, (Bet Now: $41.00) but he has showed city class talent in the past. Resumed at the Ipswich midweeks and tried hard but was no match for an in form Chris Munce galloper, Smartypy. Been kept to the mark with a Doomben trial on Tuesday where he looked pretty good to the eye. Likely starts $50+ here, but a soft gate, big track, good speed…might be worth chucking in exotics.
Race 2. (11:45) LED Superscreens Handicap (Class 6) 1400m
One last chance for 7 Chalmers (Bet Now: $7.00). Was on him at the big odds in the Provincial Championship Final and was excellent in defeat behind Bobbing before going to Hawkesbury where he had the run of the race and for mine was most disappointing behind Tamarack. On face value, the run was poor, but the form was franked last week via So You Win, so a tick there and perhaps a trip away can spark him up.
8 Cruze (Bet Now: $7.00) is in a real purple patch of form at the moment for Barry Lockwood. 12/10 steer from apprentice Corey Bayliss got him home at Doomben two weeks ago, getting the good run off the pace before getting splits nearer the inside and finishing best. Bigger track looks even more suitable for him and would have won in another stride at this track/distance the start prior to last.
16 Angel Dane (Bet Now: $9.00) got back into the good books at Eagle Farm last time out after a horror watch the start prior on Toowoomba Cup Day where she had no luck and should have won. Larry made sure the mare was getting clear air at Eagle Farm, sitting her three wide with cover before presenting her and she dashed quickly to the front, before just fending off Cruze, who won last week to frank the form. The freshen up should suit this girl and with these Steve Tregea runners, once they find form, they generally hold it.
Race 3. (12:20) Mullins Grand Prix 2200m
I’ll believe what I saw with 8 Lord Arthur (Bet Now: $3.50) at Ellerslie last time. He was good two back behind The Chosen One, who of course ran well in the ATC Derby and winning the Frank Packer. Then went to Ellerslie where he sat out the back before Jake Bayliss peeled him wider and he finished off powerfully to win impressively, beating Intrigue, who won last week at the Sunny Coast like a track gallop, so the form reads well and stable gets J Mac to steer.
1 Grinzinger Star (Bet Now: $5.00) missed the SA Derby where he looked a winning chance so he has to be respected against this lot. Was favourite when at this track/distance two weeks ago and while he wasn’t looking like the winner, he did cop severe interference from Ridgewood Drive and that put pay to his chances. At his best, clearly in the mix against this lot, which doesn’t appear strong.
Want to see something very positive from 3 Trusty Lad (Bet Now: $23.00) with the Derby in mind. He was my Derby horse for a long time, but have just gone a bit lukewarm on him after the Rough Habit. The race did tend to suit those near the speed and I think he will be much better suited at Eagle Farm compared to Doomben so there are forgives for him. At his best, clearly up to these.
Race 4. (12:55) Grinders Coffee Roasters Stakes 1300m
Why can’t 4 Quilista (Bet Now: $2.30) win again? Jump, run and win? That’s what she did last Saturday at Doomben in the Bright Shadow, leading all the way and while she beat an inferior lot compared to this lot, she did run sharp time relative to the day and did it with 60kg. Gets a bit of weight relief this time around, should lead for fun and despite a longer straight, I think she’s flying and can win again.
One of the better runs from the Silk Stocking was 6 Sexy Eyes (Bet Now: $10.00). The Weetwood winner had to lump 59kg in the Silk Stocking on that very heavy track and it was clear she wasn’t handling the conditions but gee she stuck to her guns well in defeat. Firmer footing looks perfect and third up from a spell, she should just about be ready fitness wise. Leading chance.
A potentially key form references here is the Silk Stocking from the Gold Coast three weeks ago. 11 Platinum Angel (Bet Now: $35.00) was a mare I was really keen on in that race off the back of such an impressive trial win, but she just couldn’t pick her feet up in those conditions and for mine, just pen that run. The trial win indicated she had settled into the Toby Edmonds environment quite well so giving her another chance.
Race 5. (13:35) Lord Mayor's Cup 1600m
Have to be with 16 Articus (Bet Now: $19.00). Was hot on him running a positive race first up on the Kenso track and he produced one of the runs of the meeting, making up really good ground from the back to run third to dominant winner Renewal. He looks to be flying this prep off the trials and resumption. Three time second up winner and up to the mile on the big track, he really appeals as a great each way bet.
How can you ignore the way 5 Le Juge (Bet Now: $7.00) is going about his business. He’s won four on end, the latest coming in the Chairmans when given a 12/10 steer from Fradd to dive through nearer the inside and prove too good, just. Still have doubts on him at a staying trip, so like him back to the mile though back in trip compared to some who are up in trip. Still, hard to beat.
7 Duca Valentinois (Bet Now: $8.50) is going quite well for James Cummings. Good resumption at Randwick behind Mahalangur before going to the Scone Cup where the race wasn’t run to suit him at all in a total forgive behind Special Missile but the effort was more than sound. He’s had good success when coming to Brisbane in the past and is a live chance against this lot.
Race 6. (14:15) BRC Sires Produce Stakes 1400m
2 Strasbourg (Bet Now: $5.00) does look a leading JJ Atkins contender and confident he can go close to beating these. Had a freshen up with the blinkers going on in the Champagne two weeks ago and his run was a beauty, and a touch unlucky too, when third to Dubious. Just got back and slightly held up but loved the way he found the line. 1400m on the bigger track, fitter, he’ll take some beating.
1400m and Eagle Farm are both big ticks for the Gary Portelli trained 6 Disruptor (Bet Now: $7.00). He was really good first up at Randwick when second to Reloaded before going to the Champagne Classic where he was back, wide and never really in the hunt but was good late behind Dubious. Third up at the seven furlongs on the bigger track looks an ideal set up and should take some beating.
4 Creator (Bet Now: $13.00) looks a nice enough animal for Team Snowden who has been kept on ice since winning the Clarendon at Hawkesbury, a race which has produced some really good horses in the past en route to Brisbane, which this horse is, and his recent trial at Rosehill was very good to the eye. Stable rarely get it wrong, especially with juveniles, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 7. (14:55) Premier's Cup 2200m
Hard fit, big track and 2200m does look a decent set up for the Grahame Begg trained 9 Our Libretto (Bet Now: $8.50). I think you just have to put a line through her Chairmans run at Doomben. It was a race where they didn’t appear to go hard early in and it was near impossible to make significant ground from the back. Finds a really winnable race here off her previous runs.
20 The Candy Man (Bet Now: $6.00) is a winning machine at the moment for the Barry Baldwin stable. On the quick back up after racing at the Gold Coast last Saturday where he looked a good thing on paper and won accordingly under Nathan Day, spacing his rivals on the bog track and doing it comfortably. Good test here at this level, but confident he can run well and measure up.
Think there’s a good roughie here in the shape of 21 Chillin With Dylan (Bet Now: $126.00). Was working up to something positive after a couple of decent runs to start the prep, but found a bog track at the Gold Coast last time and really struggled behind The Lord Mayor. Firmer footing at 2200m on the big track with the extra time off, there are a few positives for him to run well.
Race 8. (15:35) Kingsford-Smith Cup 1300m
This race does look quite difficult to sort out with confidence. I have a nice slice of overs about 3 Victorem (Bet Now: $8.00) so I’ll be cheering him home here, even though I think the Stradbroke is his race. His Ortensia run at Scone was outstanding. Loved the way he attacked the line despite being first up. His condition could have run out but he savaged the line in a really good sign. WFA probably not his go, but you could say the same thing about a number of runners here, and 1300m, big track, gee it’s his A1 set up.
There are a couple of schools of thought with 2 The Bostonian (Bet Now: $7.00). Yep, he won the Doomben 10,000, but could you say he was lucky given Nature Strip was wide no cover and Osborne Bulls was out the back, plus Outback Barbie wasn’t far off getting the same run he got. But then on the flip side, after the win, the connections said straight to the Stradbroke. Has he done that well since that they need to run, or do they see the lack of depth and think why not have a crack.
Very interested to see how 14 Ringerdingding (Bet Now: $10.00) goes. Very talented three year old for Chris Waller who had a mixed Autumn Carnival, though he finished it on the right note by winning the Carbine Club during the Championships. Been given a little freshen up with Brisbane in mind and gee I thought his Rosehill trial last week was sharp. If he brings his best, he can win.
Race 9. (16:15) Fred Best Classic 1400m
He’s been an Autumn Cash Cow has 4 Zoutori (Bet Now: $5.50) and I’m happy to side with him here. He’s been brilliant this time in, winning all three runs, the latest coming two weeks back at Caulfield over the mile when getting into the sweet spot just off the speed under Willow and once the gap came, it was all over. Back to 1400m no issue and if ridden cold to have last say, he showed first up he has an electric turn of foot.
6 Vega One (Bet Now: $3.50) is a very talented three year old for Tony Gollan who finally put it all together a fortnight back in the Queensland Day at Doomben, taking full advantage of the inside gate to sit near the speed before angling into clear air and he charged away late under Shinn for a dominant win over an in form Godolphin filly in Multaja. If he can progress from that into this, he’s a winning chance.
5 Signore Fox (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Team Snowden trained three year old who bounced back to his best two back at Hawkesbury when spanking the older horses before going to the Inglis Guineas at Scone where he was ridden far too negatively and had no hope in a good effort late behind Wild Planet. 1400m on the big track looks right up his alley and tempo should be strong.
