Anzac Day racing in SA this Sunday heads to Gawler. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:46) Thank You Veterans Mdn Plate 1200m
5 Vancouver Velvet (Bet Now: $4.80) on top but not a race I want to get involved in. He resumed around a month ago at Morphettville and didn’t really fire a shot from the back behind Spin The Reward. His overall form does read well for a provincial maiden, so I’ll give him another chance.
2 Justedee (Bet Now: $19.00) is a John Hyam trained four year old that resumes. He’s had a number of chances to break the maiden tag but to be fair to him, he hasn’t been far away for the most part. Just couldn’t put one away. Has trialled well leading in and I think is a key winning hope.
13 Starsongari (Bet Now: $10.00) can be an improver here at odds. Chris Bieg trained juvenile that has contested a couple of strong 2YO races to start her career and hasn’t really measured up. This is such a significant drop in depth for her and with the claim, Blinkers first time, she is a knockout chance.
Race 2. (14:21) Raaf Orion Aircraft Mdn 1500m
11 She’s Stylish (Bet Now: $3.00) on top. This mare should love the rise to 1500m after racing over 1200m here last time out, working home strongly out wide when a close up second to Point Blaze. That was her first run in a month so you’d like to think there is room for improvement and up in trip, she appeals.
3 Superb Time (Bet Now: $8.00) has had a host of chances to break the maiden tag but I do think a win is near. Few weeks between runs since racing in a 1400m maiden at Oakbank. She seemed to be in the right spot near the speed and was there to put the race away. Just couldn’t finish it off. Like she’s had a mini freshen up and overall, this race is thin.
5 Sndai Steppes (Bet Now: $13.00) is an interesting runner. Team McEvoy trained three year old that resumes. Had a two run prep in the Spring to start his career and for the most part, he did nothing. He must be showing something at home because on race day and trial form, he’s ordinary, so watch the market.
Race 3. (14:56) Sir Richard Williams (bm64) 1500m
I’m with 6 Morty (Bet Now: $2.30). Drops miles in grade/depth after contesting the Port Adelaide Guineas. Just got too far back in the run and on a day where nearer the inside was the spot to be, he had no chance given where he was. Much better suited here and prior form suggests a race like this is well within reach.
3 Bolt I Am (Bet Now: $5.50) up to 1500m I find interesting. David Jolly trained gelding who had a few weeks off prior to racing over 1200m at Morphettville just over two weeks ago. Never a winning factor where he was in the run but did make up ground late. Yet to be tried at this trip but is racing like it will be okay.
2 Tubby Two Tracks (Bet Now: $3.30) won the Gawler Cup last year so we know she has quality when right and in a 64, she has to be respected despite a couple of plain runs to start the prep. 1500m is her pet trip and with the claim, if she’s anywhere near right, she’ll take some beating.
Race 4. (15:31) Gallipoli Memorial Trophy-bm58 1700m
11 Comfort Girl (Bet Now: $12.00) looks to have her share of talent for Shayne Cahill and I think she can make it 2/2 to start the prep. Resumed over 1400m at Oakbank in a maiden and yes, she did find the best part of the track, but still had to take advantage of it and that she did, drawing clear late to win and win well. Fitter and up to 1700m, she’ll do me.
3 Does It (Bet Now: $3.50) is racing well for the Jolly camp. Just not winning. Ran over this track/distance last time out and I thought had every chance when third to Mavette, who did run well last Saturday at Morphettville, so the form reads well for this. Just needs to overcome a tricky gate.
6 Plaisir (Bet Now: $13.00) can be an improver here at odds. I’ve been keen on him winning a race this prep. Probably a bridge too far last start at Morphettville in a fast run race won by Dreamed. He isn’t a Saturday class horse. This looks more his level and off the prior runs, he’s right in this.
Race 5. (16:06) 86sqn Ivor Hatcher Hcp (c1) 1100m
2 Sensational Reward (Bet Now: $3.30) looks the safe option for the McEvoy camp. Makes her SA debut after starting her career in Victoria and while she ran well, just didn’t quite measure up to warrant remaining there, so like her back to this level, especially a thin Class 1, and from the inside gate, I expect Vorster to be positive.
8 Kishstar (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Gary Searle trained mare that is second up. Resumed at this track/distance three weeks ago where she had the suck run behind the speed and was there to win but had to settle for a second to Fabulous Flipper. Maps to get a good run again and has upside.
14 Comiendo (Bet Now: $19.00) can add value to multiples. Didn’t mind him at odds when he raced here last time out. Probably ridden a touch warm and closer in the run, which took away something from his finale, so I’m forgiving of that effort and off prior form, I think he’s in with a shout at a price.
Race 6. (16:41) Raaf Aircraft Kittyhawk-bm54 1200m
4 Centre Scoota (Bet Now: $6.50) doesn’t have the best of racing patterns, but I think it won’t matter in what looks a very thin 54 race. Just got too far back at Clare last time and that is a track where on speed is such an advantage. Not so much here, so he can sit back, get a drag into the race and finish off strongly.
2 Turf Tapper (Bet Now: $6.00) has a tricky draw to overcome but I think he has come back well. Definite pass mark fresh at Oakbank before going to Naracoorte where I just d9on’t think he handles the tight track, so I’m forgiving of that run. Off the Oakbank outing, he’s a serious contender.
This might be a prep run for 6 Augusta Rock (Bet Now: $19.00) given he does his best racing at Port Augusta, but he can sneak a first four spot at a price. Resumed at Port Augusta where he was back in the run and chasing from the outset. Didn’t mind the way he finished his race off. First four hope at odds.
Race 7. (17:17) Raaf Centenary (bm68) 1100m
6 Secret War (Bet Now: $2.25) in the get out. Gary Searle trained gelding that is 2/2 to start the prep, bolting up on each occasion. Resumed at Balaklava before a dominant win at this track/distance just under three weeks ago. Tricky draw to overcome but has the early toe to come across.
11 La Vita (Bet Now: $12.00) is four weeks between runs for Stuart Gower since racing over 1200m on the course proper at Morphettville. Had a dream sit behind the speed and chased strongly, but couldn’t quite get there when fourth to Galcrum. She’s a mare who likes to race best on the fresh side and finds a winnable race.
9 Atomic Lokade (Bet Now: $41.00) is eligible for easier races but she can produce a booming finale when she gets the right set up, so for wider exotics, I could include her. Hasn’t raced since January 16 when down the track at Murray Bridge behind an in form Calypso Reign after getting back in the run. No trials/jumpouts, but is a mare who can pull out a decent run fresh.
