Nine races will be run and won at Rosehill this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (3) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:35) Golden Gift 1100m
Hard to say an unraced two year old is a good thing, but I think 4 Plague Stone (Bet Now: $1.45) can be an exception. I think he could well stamp himself as the leading contender for the royal blue when it comes to either the Blue Diamond and the Golden Slipper. Didn’t really take much notice of the trial win given the time, but relative to the morning, it was outstanding, and the way he powered to the line late…yep, he’s a good one.
7 Secret Lady (Bet Now: $6.00) is the horse with race experience on her side and she did a good job here on debut I thought a fortnight back. Used some petrol tickets to lead them up and gave a decent kick, but bumped into a smart one in Dynamited. Think she bumps into another Godolphin smarty here, but should run well.
8 Californiasurprise (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Team Snowden trained filly that debuted a tick under three weeks back over 900m at Muswellbrook and while the win was narrow, she ran pretty good time and showed good fight when challenged. Runner up ran awfully earlier in the week, so the form is suspect, but she has hard race experience on her side.
Race 2. (13:15) The HQ Of Insurance Handicap (75) 1400m
9 Bull Market (Bet Now: $10.00) on top for me. Team Snowden trained colt who has had two runs back from a break. Did well against the bias fresh at Canterbury before racing at Newcastle on a shifty track where he didn’t look entirely happy yet still found the line when second to Good Weather. Firm footing is the key and if he gets it, I’m keen to play.
1 Star Sensation (Bet Now: $3.80) is a ripping filly for the Mark Newnham team. Gave them windburn to win two back at Canterbury before taking on the older mares on Cup Day at Randwick and she was dynamic again. There to be beaten, but she showed really good toughness when it mattered to win. Beating the older horses is a big tick.
2 Up Trumpz (Bet Now: $11.00) could be the big improver here at odds. Was heavily backed in the Snake Gully Cup last Friday at Gundagai but just ran out of puff late on the testing track behind proven city performer Mercurial Lad. Should be hard fit now and getting back on top of the ground are both big ticks for this bloke.
Race 3. (13:50) Luna Park Handicap (87) 1800m
2 Zahspeed (Bet Now: $12.00) has been pretty good in three runs for the Edmonds camp. He landed some big bets when winning at the Doomben mile weeks back, leading all the way to win under Jeff Lloyd and was dominant in winning. Creeping up in the weights, but maps well again, hard fit, in form…rates highly.
8 Mornington (Bet Now: $4.80) looks the main threat. Chris Waller trained import who made his Australian debut over the 1800m here three weeks back and I thought he stuck to the task really well behind Carzoff in a race where the form well and truly held up last Saturday with both of those horses running well. He has the upside and now has the run under the belt.
9 Be Like Dad (Bet Now: $14.00) is the knockout hope for sure. David Payne trained galloper who bombed the start at this track/distance a fortnight back so really he did a great job to get as close as he did to Intueri. I’d love to see him roll forward here, because his best efforts in recent times have come when riding the speed.
Race 4. (14:25) Bedford CA Handicap (82) 1200m
5 Conchita (Bet Now: $13.00) is the one to beat for mine. This mare ran down the straight on Derby Day and gee she was good late when close up behind Lyuba in a mares race which had really good depth. She is absolutely flying at the moment. The little worry is she has been terrible at four previous 1200m attempts. I’ll gamble now she’s older and more mature, she’ll handle it.
7 Zonk (Bet Now: $2.30) looks a key threat. Les Bridge trained mare who ran here a fortnight back where she sat on speed and looked to have every chance under Innes Jr but she was bloused late by Machinegun Jubs. Should be hard fit now, maps super once again, and I am hoping that extra fitness will see her strong at the end.
I think you have to give 1 Vigilance (Bet Now: $10.00) another look. I thought she was very disappointing here a fortnight back in the Machinegun Jubs race mentioned above which followed an eye catching first up run at Randwick. Draws awkwardly again, but she is too good of a mare with a decent record to entirely ignore.
Race 5. (15:00) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1500m
1 Realing (Bet Now: $4.00) is one with a stack of upside and quality about him. He resumed in a 1200m Highway here three weeks ago and I loved his effort from the back, closing off with purpose to run second to O’Lordy and that form has already been franked. Quickly up to 1500m is the issue, but his Winter Carnival form reads so well.
3 Gitan (Bet Now: $4.60) is a handy conveyance for the Jean Dubois team who resumed at Canterbury and was far from disgraced behind Star of Africa before racing at Randwick on Cup Day where he ran a strong third to Istria. As we know, that city form for these Highways is gold and third up at 1500m, he looks well placed.
8 Athonis (Bet Now: $6.00) represents value to my eye. Joseph/Jones trained former kiwi who has been pretty good since coming down under. Loved his win on Sunday at Canberra over 1400m given he was coming back in trip against some nice types yet still did the work on speed and kept finding. Maps okay and gets a gun front running hoop in Rachel King.
Race 6. (15:40) Thoroughbred Breeders NSW Handicap (90) 1400m
No reason to jump off 6 Just Dreaming (Bet Now: $3.00) I feel. This mare did a good job to win over the 1500m here a fortnight back. Looked a bit hairy early in the straight when there was no run but once she got clear running, it was game over. Back to 1400m is the query, but she should be hard fit now and she does love Rosehill.
2 Zumbelina (Bet Now: $4.40) is a mare that is just low flying at the moment for the Chris Waller team. Landed some nice bets when racing over 1200m here two weeks ago, charging home from off the pace to get the win and nab Magic Alibi. 1400m is a different pain barrier, but she races as if it will be no issue and she does have that turn of foot.
7 Zenalicious (Bet Now: $11.00) is the interesting runner here. She was touted as a possible Myer Classic contender but stable elected to not go there and stay home. Was awful two back behind Mortar Platoon. She went back to the trials and then ran in the Just Dreaming race here two weeks back and she closed off okay late. Think she wants further, but she does have class/quality on her side.
Race 7. (16:20) The Country Classic 2000m
4 Allzin (Bet Now: $11.00) on top for me. Graham Hoy trained gelding who resumed over the mile at Randwick on Cup Day and I loved the way he closed off after getting held up a touch early on in the straight, finishing off to run third to Our Belisa. Has a really good second up record as well as when racing at 2000m+, and a genuine 2000m will be ideal.
17 Miss Dubois (Bet Now: $4.40) has the genuine city form on the board and gee she gets in so well at the weights here. Closed off quite nicely a fortnight back over 1800m here when a close up second to Intueri after getting back in a slowly run affair. She’ll eat up the 2000m here. If we got a wet track, she’d clearly be on top.
I think 15 Old Habits (Bet Now: $18.00) is a definite threat here. Really liked his run fresh at Warwick Farm in a strong midweek event behind So Spirited before going to Hawkesbury on Oaks Day and again working home with purpose behind Poet’s Advocate. 2000m looks ideal, has upside and gets Avdulla steering.
Race 8. (17:00) Goldners Horse Transport Handicap (80) 1100m
9 Bon Amis (Bet Now: $2.10) just picks herself here and like last start, I’ll happily take any price for him. He looks a low level blacktype class horse who did a really good job to win at this track/distance a fortnight back given he was ridden upside down, copped pressure on speed, and looks wise, he had improvement to come re coat and fitness. Should be near cherry ripe now and I’d love to see him ridden with cover so he can launch like he did first up.
Back to 1100m will be perfect for 5 In Times Of War (Bet Now: $5.00). Quality mare for Chris Waller who is more of a non winner than Tom Melbourne, which is saying something. Looked to have every chance when racing over 1200m here two weeks ago, loomed to win, but the 1200m just saw her out when third to Machinegun Jubs. Back to 1100m is her go, she’s hard fit…could I back her to win? No way.
1 Grande Punto (Bet Now: $41.00) could be the knockout chance at odds here. He resumed in the Bowman Sprint at Muswellbrook on Cup Day where he was an alarming drifter in betting yet made up good ground late and wasn’t beaten far when fourth to Pel. Has an excellent second up record and saves his best for Rosehill.
Race 9. (17:40) ANZ Bloodstock News Handicap (83) 1500m
6 Istria (Bet Now: $2.80) clearly on top for me. This mare is absolutely low flying at the moment for Godolphin and James Cummings. Hasn’t raced since Cup Day at Randwick where she took on a solid field yet absolutely brained them under Josh Parr, winning by nearly five lengths and ran brilliant time. Confident she can measure up here.
4 Dreamforce (Bet Now: $3.40) is a talented type for the John Thompson team who was confidently backed when resuming over the 1300m here a fortnight back and to the eye, he looked to have every chance on speed, but was outgunned late by a race fit Redouble, who won last week to hold that form up. 1500m second up suits…the worry I have is that he has beaten at short odds his past five.
3 Xebec (Bet Now: $71.00) is a really interesting runner. Chris Waller middle distance horse that resumes here after a three run Winter prep in Melbourne, where his best effort was fresh at Flemington when third to stablemate Encosta Line. Better over further, but he can pull out a run fresh and didn’t appear to travel too bad in a recent Canterbury trial.
