A strong nine race card has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday where it is Recognition Stakes Day. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out five metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:47) Stav, Abby And Matt with Oshers Handicap 1200m
3 Rock ‘N’ Sol (Bet Now: $4.40) is a son of Sebring having his first start for Tony Gollan. This bloke trialled on last Tuesday here and I liked the way he moved. Was shown the whip but the good sign is that he responded to it and then looked more smooth in his style when a close second. Think there is a decent engine under the hood, so a definite yard/market watch.
1 Blue Book (Bet Now: $2.15) is a Kelly Doughty trained gelding who was safe somewhat in betting when debuting here a fortnight back but despite that, he was quite impressive I thought in leading all the way under Jeff Lloyd, and ran decent time too. Looks the leader again and I don’t see 1200m being an issue.
7 Keirabella (Bet Now: $6.00) is a daughter of More Than Ready on debut for the Matty Dunn team. This girl trialled last Tuesday at the Gold Coast and wasn’t asked to do much when third to Love Struck, but she looked to move quite nicely and when Fradd squeezed her early on in the straight, there was a response.
Race 2. (13:22) Ray Garsk Memorial Plate (Class 3) 1630m
8 Monasterio (Bet Now: $6.00) gets the nod for me here. Chris Waller trained galloper who has been excellent in two runs back from a break, the latest coming a fortnight back at this track/distance when charging home from the back to run second to all the way winner Don’t Doubt Da Wife. Should be close to peak fitness now third up from a break and he has the upside.
5 Chamaulu (Bet Now: $5.50) is another with upside here who should take some beating. Was really keen on his chances when he resumed here three weeks back but the firm2 was perhaps not ideal and he couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Spring Tycoon. Has always shown really good promise and I think up to the mile is ideal.
1 Anzio (Bet Now: $20.00) is a tough, tough customer for the Paul Robbins team who is a fortnight between runs since racing over 2000m here where he tried hard but the ten furlongs probably saw him out at this level behind Bracteate. Much better suited here, back to the mile, and he draws to get a suck run behind the speed.
Race 3. (13:57) Qupex Handicap (70) 1350m
8 Aqua Vite (Bet Now: $3.10) was heavily backed when racing at the mile here three weeks back but he just didn’t seem to let down like normal on the firm ground and had to settle for third to stablemate Snapper. Should be a bit more give in the track this time, which will help big time, and I can’t ignore the support he had.
18 Another Slipper (Bet Now: $11.00) could be the big improver here at odds. Excellent resumption at Ipswich when third before racing there again last start and he just looked drunk. Out the back, wandered, did nothing really, but in saying that, they came home in just over 33 so he would have had to run sub 32 to win. Hopefully he can sit closer in the run and Lloyd does stick.
9 Gouldian (Bet Now: $23.00) is an absolute bludger to follow but credit to him, he was super in winning over 1400m at the Gold Coast last Saturday against a couple of handy types who would start near favourite here. No harm back to 1350m, maps well, hard fit, in form…I think he run a very cheeky race at odds.
Race 4. (14:32) Carlton Mid Handicap 1350m
3 Colosimo (Bet Now: $4.40) is a pretty consistent filly for the Chris Waller team who has been pretty good in recent times. Her last start came over this track/distance three weeks back where she ran on a firm2 and did a really good job against the bias to run third to Miss Miao. Provided we get an even level playing field here, I think she’s the safe play.
1 Zofonic Dancer (Bet Now: $5.00) is an unbeaten gelding for Rob Heathcoate but in terms of a winning chance, a serious one, I’m not sure. All you can do is win and that is what he has done, winning three from three, the latest coming over the mile here on October 14. Has residual fitness, but look for him to be warming to the task late.
8 Pomme La Belle (Bet Now: $18.00) is the interesting one. Mel O’Gorman trains this girl at Tamworth and she has been dominant at her past two outings, albeit in thin races over 1400m and 1300m respectively at Armidale, but she’s run decent time both starts/wins, and she has put a gap on her rivals each time, a good sign for a young horse, especially against the older horses.
Race 5. (15:08) Winning Edge Presentations Handicap (90) 1050m
12 Colinelle (Bet Now: $5.50) on top. Smart gelding that resumes for the O’Dea camp. He ran twice during the Winter Carnival here in a couple of sprint races, finishing just behind The Virginian and Snitty Kitty respectively, and that form is far superior to anything engaged here. Takes on some nice types here, but loved what I saw in a recent trial.
10 Khalama (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented mare that resumes for the Tony Golan team. She was very consistent right throughout Winter and the early part of the Spring, winning a couple on the bounce and always performing well in town. Looked sharp in a trial win here last week and did run good time relative to the morning.
7 Powerful Saga (Bet Now: $9.50) is a talented sprinter for the Helen Page team who got a well deserved win over 1100m on his home track at the Gold Coast a few weeks back under Ronnie Stewart, who fended off note speedster Bullpit for the win. I think the 1050m is ideal and he does like racing at Doomben.
Race 6. (15:48) GH Mumm Handicap (80) 2200m
2 The Rumour File (Bet Now: $7.00) for me. Chris Waller trained stayer who ran over this track/distance four weeks back where he looked in an awful spot on the turn but Lloyd got the breaks and the splits, burst through and nabbed Karakabeel right on the peg. That horse ran well a fortnight back, so the form reads okay, and he does remain down in the weights.
4 Karakabeel (Bet Now: $5.00) ran second in that race mentioned above and he tried really hard but just couldn’t finish it off. He then stepped back to 2000m a fortnight back and again tried but again found one better in Bracteate. He is finding it hard to greet the judge, but gee I think he gets a great chance here in a wide open contest.
16 Kirini (Bet Now: $9.50) was a month between runs when racing at this track/distance on Cup Day and I thought her effort from the back behind Three Points was solid. Never really looked likely on the shifty track but didn’t throw in the towel. Should come right on from that and the firmer footing will be a big tick.
Race 7. (16:28) UBET Classic 1200m
I think 9 Of The Day (Bet Now: $10.00) is a really good each way play here. Talented mare resuming for the Tony Gollan camp. She was outstanding through the Winter/Spring, including two back when spacing her rivals at the Gold Coast and running sizzling before having no luck here behind Final Zero. Trialled up really well behind Sir Moments I thought and looks ready to go.
2 Sheiswhatsheis (Bet Now: $6.00) is indeed that. What you see is what you get with her. Jumps, runs and gives her all. Hasn’t raced since early September, so she has residual fitness, and my word she trialled sensationally here last week. She looks forward enough and wound up to my eye to run a beauty here.
11 Inspired Estelle (Bet Now: $11.00) is the big watch here. Toby Edmonds trained mare who resumed here on Cup Day on the shifty track and she absolutely bolted in under Jeff Lloyd, spacing her rivals, running sharp time and doing it without really being fully extended. Has always shown blacktype promise and she gets another chance.
Race 8. (17:08) Sky Racing Tatts Recognition Stakes 1350m
Very keen here on 9 Crack Me Up (Bet Now: $3.20 ODDS BOOST). Quality animal for the Liam Birchley team who resumed with a cracking second over the 1200m a fortnight back, savaging the line from the back with 63kg on his back behind Brooklyn Storm. Can only improve off that and he does generally perform much better second up.
3 Gold Symphony (Bet Now: $7.00 ODDS BOOST) is the big watch here. Handy sprinter first up for Team Snowden and there looks to be intent from the stable to specifically target this carnival. He can be hit and miss at times, but he looks wound up to run a beauty fresh off two strong trials, the latest resulted in him running second last week at Randwick. Looks ready to go.
4 Hopfgarten (Bet Now: $20.00 ODDS BOOST) is a quality animal for the Rob Heathcoate team who score somewhat of a surprising win first up over the 1200m here before racing at the same track/distance and getting too far back in a leader dominated affair behind Hi I’m Back. Has a really solid third up record and has class on his side.
Race 9. (17:48) Hutchinson Builders Handicap (75) 1200m
8 Manaya (Bet Now: $3.20) on top in a very tough event to close off the card. This girl ran over the 1350m here three weeks back and got the job done to win impressively and landing some nice bets. Think she will be much better with that little bit of cushion in the ground and I think back to 1200m is a big tick for her.
14 St Hilary (Bet Now: $8.50) is a mare that is just low flying at the moment for the Tony Gollan team. This mare hasn’t raced for four weeks since racing over the 1350m here where she defied a betting drift and led all the way to win narrowly but impressively. Harder here, but back to 1200m and that little bit of cut in the track is ideal.
5 Reckless Abandon (Bet Now: $34.00) is the big watch here. Liam Birchley trained galloper that resumes here off a near 12 month break where he was a bit disappointing this time last year, albeit in stronger races than this. The two trials leading in have been okay but the big query and the thing I’m wary of is that D Browne is booked. Intent to run well fresh?
