SA metro racing this Saturday returns to Gawler where nine races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (13:06) TAB Handicap 1500m
1 Aurman Zou (Bet Now: $3.70), despite coming back in trip, looks the pony to bet on here. Ran over the mile at Murray Bridge last Saturday and he was a real eye catcher from the back, closing off with purpose behind Kyshaka. Off that, would have thought a rise in trip would suit not coming back to 1500m, but on the flip side, this is a very thin race.
2 Ballast (Bet Now: $4.60) is racing really well at the moment for Jordan Frew and noteworthy he had a couple of runners nominated for this race but goes with the sole rep in this guy, who was excellent in defeat at Murray Bridge last time when on speed and kicking strongly but no answers late for Ambidazzle. Should take care of the wide gate via early speed and with the claim for Sophie Logan, he’s well in.
The Port Lincoln form is usually suspect when bringing it to metro level, but this is a really thin race so including 6 Leonarda (Bet Now: $8.00). Big win from off the pace two back before stepping up to 1390m and worked home strongly to run third. Think she’ll eat up 1500m, and the bigger track, plus the claim for Alana Kelly certainly helps.
Race 2. (13:41) Cornerstone Stud Handicap 1200m
5 Autumn Splendour (Bet Now: $7.50) gets another chance for me. Was all over this filly when she resumed four weeks ago at Morphettville but did everything wrong when asked for the big effort and on face value, she was most disappointing behind Iscariot. She’s clearly better than that and the Ear Muffs are off, so giving her another look because the trial was just too good.
This race will tell us one way or the other if 6 Just Zerene (Bet Now: $1.35) is a one trick pony, a 1000m speed demon, or can she extend her brilliance to 1200m. She finally resumed at Murray Bridge two weeks ago and gave them a spanking in leading throughout. Ran much faster time than the 3YO 1000 race and did it from the front. Just has to stretch it an extra 200m and away from Murray Bridge.
I think 1 Picargo (Bet Now: $8.00) can go close here. Ran in a benchmark race three weeks ago at Gawler where he had the dream sit off the speed before peeling into clear air and what I liked was the last 75m. He really knuckled down when asked and put them away to win impressively. The knock is remaining at 1200m given he may want further.
Race 3. (14:16) Terrace Function Centre Maiden Plate 1200m
4 Manor King (Bet Now: $9.50) for me. Shane Oxlade trains this three year old, who was very good first up at Port Lincoln in a 3YO benchmark race before contesting maiden races his next two, the latest at Strathalbyn when a close up third to Predicts. Like him back to 1200m, lands near the speed and should be hard to run down.
10 Seemingly Discreet (Bet Now: $2.35) has these on toast re ability IMO, but it’s her endeavour that concerns me somewhat and why she isn’t on top. Was all over her at Sale last time and on the turn, it was no betting, but gee her finale was weak and she barely held on for second. She can win this given her form is superior, but couldn’t back her.
6 Annika (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Mick Huxtable trained filly that was unwanted in betting when debuting at Murray Bridge two weeks ago and while she had her chance, she wasn’t too bad in defeat behind Air Marshal. Depth here clearly nowhere near as strong and you’d like to think this girl will improve from start one to start two.
Race 4. (14:51) Kaesler Wines Stonehorse Shiraz Hcp 1700m
3 Stolen Away (Bet Now: $4.80) should take some beating here for the in form Travis Doudle team. This mare was 1200m to 1600m at Strathalbyn last time and I thought she did a really good job in winning. Visually, she was getting the staggers late, but given the set up, the win had merit. Has that run under the belt which should hold him in good stead for 1700m.
1 Allusion (Bet Now: $1.90) is a key threat, but if he’s short odds, no way could I entertain him. Was odds on when resuming a few weeks ago over the mile at Morphettville and Barend Vorster gave the gelding every possible chance on speed, controlling things to suit himself. Just found one better in Master Chum, who is flying this prep. Fitter, perhaps better suited with cover…is a leading chance, but if he’s under $3, happy to just watch.
Back to 1700m is interesting for the Philippe Huserot trained 2 Cause We Can (Bet Now: $11.00). Ran over 2000m in the Bordertown Cup last time when specked in betting and after getting a good run in transit, he tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Pass The Glass. Good record at Gawler and though back in trip, this isn’t a strong race.
Race 5. (15:31) MarX Real Estate Handicap 1200m
4 Eperdument (Bet Now: $6.00) is an Americain mare for Shane Oxlade that comes through the Dr Dependable race from a fortnight back at Murray Bridge where she was back in the run off a slow tempo and really had no chance given where she was, but I thought her finale was outstanding behind the Macdonald/Gluyas stayer. Can sit closer in the run and if that eventuates, she’ll take some beating.
2 Lostarc (Bet Now: $4.80) is on an Adelaide Cup path and he looks to be ticking over nicely for it. Was first past the post two weeks ago at Murray Bridge but lost it on protest to Dr Dependable given he shifted out under pressure, causing the runner up to lose momentum and change course. Was 1500m to 2000m that day, so that should bring him on for this.
3 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $13.00) can be an improver at odds for John Hickmott. He ran at Murray Bridge two weeks ago when wide no cover on speed and couldn’t go on with it when down the track behind Dr Dependable. Races well at Gawler and with better luck in running, he can run a much improved race and fill a first four spot.
Race 6. (16:11) Thank You CFS Handicap 1100m
8 Scare Campaign (Bet Now: $18.00) on top. Peter Blanch trains this gelding, who is first up, having not raced since October 25 over 1200m here when a closing fifth to Gravity. Form around him from last prep reads well, recent jumpout at Morphettville was a good piece of work and if Gatt can take advantage of the draw, he’ll take some beating.
1 Burning The Clock (Bet Now: $2.20) isn’t the most reliable galloper going around but Will Clarken looks to have found a very winnable race for this gelding. Hasn’t raced since Boxing Day at Morphettville when just off the speed under Kok and was there to win but couldn’t finish it off when second to Mum’s My Hero. Stable flying so deserves one more chance.
Stuart Gower has 5 La Vita (Bet Now: $4.20) going really well at the moment. Sweet steer from Stubby saw her win a weak race at Morphettville, but her confidence was boosted, which saw that translate to a strong effort at Gawler when beaten narrowly by Galcrum, with the weight pull being the difference in the end. Hard to beat here if she holds her form.
Race 7. (16:51) Coopers Handicap 1200m
2 Set To Sparkle (Bet Now: $4.60) is worth another look I feel. Trialled up really well prior to resuming over 1200m at Murray Bridge two weeks ago where the market flucs late suggested she would need the run and that’s how it panned out, just running out of condition late when fourth to Enough Swagger, a mare that is low flying at the moment. Fitter, giving this girl another chance.
Good little test for 3 Enough Swagger (Bet Now: $2.30) but she’s flying and at the moment, is too good for them, but the query now is that she’s creeping up in the weights and is meeting a couple of these worse off from last time. She’s won four on the bounce and has been impressive each time she has stepped out. Harder here, with the weight rise, but has the picket fence next to the name.
8 Mysticano (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Darren Magro trained gelding who is three weeks between runs since scoring a pretty sharp win at this track/distance when sitting off what looked a good speed before Gary Lo eased him into clear air and liked the way he put them away late. Harder here, but gets good weight relief and saves his best for Gawler.
Race 8. (17:31) Adelaide Plains Bloodstock Hcp 1500m
Was on 5 Regalo Di Gaetano (Bet Now: $6.50) two weeks ago at Murray Bridge and happy to butter up with him. Ran over 1400m where he was three wide cover and looked to travel really well but just didn’t have the turn of foot to go with Jentico but did close off late, suggesting 1500m will be fine, and this looks ideal placement if you trust that run, which I am.
1 Naseeb (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Sue Murphy trained gelding that is potentially on the Adelaide Carnival path so keen to see how he goes here. He hasn’t raced since Boxing Day at Morphettville when sprouting wings late to win the Alcopop Series Final. Month between runs, so how forward he is I don’t know, but has residual fitness and solid form around him.
7 Good ‘N’ Fast (Bet Now: $11.00) can be dangerous here. Comes through the Jentico race mentioned above and he was a clear unlucky runner. Didn’t have the clearest of paths in the straight and should have finished much closer. Has a gate to get clear air from the outset and the jockey upgrade to senior hoop Paul Gatt is a big tick.
Race 9. (18:10) Holdfast Insurance Handicap 1200m
This is a proper bludger of a get out. 2 Magnus Knight (Bet Now: $9.50) is a winner of ten races and his recent efforts haven’t been too bad. Ran over 1100m here weeks ago and loomed to win but couldn’t quite finish it off yet was still sound in defeat behind Atomic Lokade. I think up to 1200m will suit and he should get a lovely run off a good speed.
14 Galcrum (Bet Now: $7.50) is going really well at the moment for the Daryl Reynolds team. Ran here three weeks ago when sitting off a good speed before a lovely choice of tactics from a gun apprentice in Lachie Neindorf saw the mare dart up the inside and edge out La Vita in a tight go to the line. Repeats that effort here and she’ll go close again.
He wants further than this but 15 Galcrum (Bet Now: $17.00) does have his share of ability and if they do go silly in front, he’ll be one of the strongest at the end. He’s resuming off a 19 week spell and I couldn’t find a jumpout for him, so market will be the guide, but is trained on the track, so watch the market late.
