Saturday racing returns to Sandown this Saturday, the first time since Zipping Classic Day, where the track was pretty poor so here’s hoping it improves. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.

Race One (13:00) : Blue Star Group Handicap (70) 1400m:

Back Me: 2 Alma’s Rossa (Bet Now: $8.50) for me here in a really even contest for the three year olds. This fily is trained by Matty Williams and comes to town off the back of a couple of impressive wins on her home track at the Bool, the first of which being a maiden in a race where the form has held up really well, before repeating the dose against the older horses. Bit to like about the way this filly goes about her business and I think she can handle the step up.
Big Danger: 4 Lovani (Bet Now: $11.00) was ridden arrogantly and confidently two back at Yarra Valley and that got the filly her maiden win emphatically before going to Kilmore where she did a bit of work on speed and was there to be beaten, but to her credit she fought on really strongly and clung on to win. Looks to get speed favours here and I doubt she’ll do much work in the run, so she has to rate highly.
Long Shot: 8 Macattack (Bet Now: $21.00) is a handy filly for Archie Alexander who comes here in pretty good form. She ran second to Lovani in that Kilmore race mentioned above and her effort was strong given she was off speed and chased hard all the way and did get pretty close on the line. Gets a nice weight pull on that filly and should get every chance from barrier one.

Race Two (13:35) : Yarramalong Racing Club Handicap (70) 1000m:

Back Me: 9 Pearl Congennial (Bet Now: $7.00) is a well performed filly who finally broke her maiden tag when resuming at Cranbourne, albeit narrowly, but the win was strong given she was wide no cover and the leader did run along at a fast tempo, which did leave her gassed, but her class got her home. She has some really strong form from her two year old days and she looks to have really strengthened up during the break. Hard to beat.
Big Danger: 3 Mr Sneaky (Bet Now: $2.50) resumed on a bottomless Kyneton surface a tick over two weeks back where he looked to travel well in the run and was the one to beat on the home turn but when let down, the wheels were just spinning and he was ambushed late. Should get a firmer surface here, which will clearly suit, and the 1000m at this track should be ideal to his racing pattern.
Long Shot: 8 Casque (Bet Now: $18.00) was the subject of a great training effort by Robbie Laing last start over 1000m at Cranbourne given the start prior he raced over 1700m at Sale where he was a close up fourth. He might have got the Cranbourne win via a successful protest, but if he didn’t get interfered with, it would have been an impressive win over an above average looking type. Giving him a strong winning chance here.

Race Three (14:10) : Argyle Maintenance Handicap (78) 1000m:

Back Me: 6 Rich Charm (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented gelding that resumes for Udyta Clarke. He scored brilliantly down the Flemington straight two back over 1000m before stepping up to 1100m down the straight where he charged home to run third to Spieth, and we know how good that horse is going to be. That alone leaves him as the one to beat, but I’ll add the super trial effort at Cranbourne a few weeks back.
Big Danger: 9 Amadeus (Bet Now: $2.90) resumed over 1100m on Werribee Cup Day and on face value, he was a touch disappointing when ambushed nearer the inside by Crystal Dreamer, but when you screw down the meeting, nothing made significant ground out wide so his effort first up was very good. Go back to the Autumn and he ran well behind the likes of Silent Sedition and Divine Mr Artie. Good enough to be a serious prospect here.
Long Shot: 1 Big Reel (Bet Now: $13.00) produced a brilliant finishing burst from last to win two back over 955m at the Valley before going back to old tactics of sitting on speed on Pakenham Cup Day and to his credit, he was very good in defeat given later in the day we realised that leaders and horses near the rail had no hope. I think if he can get cover and a drag up, he’ll go close.

Race Four (14:45) : Ridgeview Park Thoroughbred Stud Handicap (84) 1800m:

Back Me: 8 Firebird Flyer  (Bet Now: $14.00) was really good against the tempo when running third first up at Rosehill before being sent to Flemington where she again got back in a slowly run race, but this time there was bias and she couldn’t overcome. Looks a classic case of a Waller horse running flat second up off a super return and bouncing back third up. Giving her another chance.
Big Danger: 3 Domino Vitale (Bet Now: $3.30) toughed it out strongly to win over the mile here two back in what has turned out to be a strong form race. She then went to Flemington where she ran over 1700m and looked to bolt up to Hell Or Highwater, but that horse kicked on strongly to edge out Domino Vitale. That does leave me with reservations about her at 1800m but she has a super record at Sandown.
Long Shot: 11 My Sanctuary (Bet Now: $8.00) has had two runs back from a break for Darren Weir, both at this track, starting off at 1400m when making ground late behind Mai Thai before stepping up to the mile where she again finished off strongly behind Castle Hackett. She bolted in third up last prep and ticks alot of boxes against this line up.

Race Five (15:20) : Swettenham Stud Summer Championship Heat 4 1400m:

Back Me: 1 Burning Front (Bet Now: $2.30) was very good in defeat last time out in the Gold Bullion (1400m) at Pakenham given he was wide no cover most of the way and with the 60kg, that is a tough ask, but to his credit, he loomed to win the race but just had no answers to the turn of foot produced by Grande Rosso. Remains at 1400m which is a query given I think he is looking for the mile, but he has upside and is tough.
Big Danger: 6 Airalign (Bet Now: $5.50) surprised a few when resuming on Kilmore Cup Day in what looked a handy sprint race, but he showed a lovely turn of foot when the gap appeared and nailed Bassett on the peg. That’s nothing to jump up and down about but given he is a miler, it was a super win. Gets map favours here, 52kg and is a four time winner second up.
Long Shot: 3 Tried And Tired (Bet Now: $19.00) could easily improve here in what is an overall weak event. He comes through the Marion at Morphettville where he got back in the ruck and just stayed there pretty much behind impressive winner Cavaloce. Got a really good record at Hillside, draws a soft gate and being fourth up, he should be ready fitness wise.

Race Six (16:00) : Ladbrokes Up For The Challenge Handicap (78) 1600m:

Back Me: 6 Rewarding Effort (Bet Now: $2.30) is an above average the for Cindy Alderson who looks the one to beat here. He made up really nice ground out wide late in the Gold Bullion (1400m) at Pakenham before going to the Mornington mile last Wednesday where it looked on paper as if he’d spank them and he rightfully did. Should only be better suited on the bigger track and I am quite keen on him here.
Big Danger: 1 Black Sheep (Bet Now: $5.00) was a dominant winner over the Valley mile two back before going to Flemington where he got held up badly in the straight and lost all momentum. Not sure if he would have won, but the run was somewhat inconclusive. He is the clear class runner and should prove tough to hold out.
Long Shot: 11 Royal Request (Bet Now: $13.00) is a horse who generally saves his best for the dirt up at Darwin for their Cup Carnival, but he showed last time out that he is quite capable on the turf at Geelong when defying the track pattern and making up really good ground late behind Izenashark. Third up, so he should have upside left and I think you have to respect the fact that Oliver is steering.

Race Seven (16:40) : OTI Racing Handicap (78) 2400m:

Back Me: 5 Zourkhan (Bet Now: $4.80) absolutely trotted up two back at Kembla Grange before going to Rosehill where he took an absolute eternity to wind up and for the most part he wasn’t going to, but his final 75m and through the line was very good when finishing third to stablemate Soviet Courage. If this track had genuine give in it, I’d declare him, but even without that, he is the one to beat still.
Big Danger: 6 Hardern (Bet Now: $5.00) ran well against the bias in a strong form on Pakenham Cup Day two starts back before racing over 2200m at Geelong a tick under two weeks back where he was off the bit on the turn and under hard riding, but he kept finding under Chris Symons and clung on to beat off his rivals. Gives the impression that the Sandown 2400m will be ideal, he’ll stay all day and isn’t badly treated at the weights.
Long Shot: 8 Zenithal (Bet Now: $13.00) ran well on Ballarat Cup Day behind Shikapour before racing over 2500m at Flemington where he was a victim of the on pace bias but still stuck to the task quite well I thought behind Goathland, who finished in front of Hardern in that Pakenham race, so the form is easy to tie in. He is a hard horse to trust, but so are most of these.

Race Eight (17:20) : Le Pine Funerals Handicap (70) 1300m:

Back Me: 9 Labuan Star (Bet Now: $4.00) was solid in defeat two back at the Valley behind In Fairness, who has since won again, before the four year old went to Terang where there was confident market support and the punters’ faith was rewarded with a last stride win over stablemate Secret Prophet, who bumped into an above average type in Portman at Bendigo on Sunday, so I am tipping that form to stack up well and he has to be rated as a winning chance for sure.
Big Danger: 5 Top Me Up (Bet Now: $9.00) is a horse who is slowly running out of chances with punters, but he has to be regarded here. Had no luck last start at the Valley when getting badly help up behind tired runners when having plenty to offer behind Roman Fizz. If he brought his A-game, he would do a number on these. But as I said, he is hard to trust.
Long Shot: 10 Hunting Hill (Bet Now: $14.00) is a handy galloper under the care of Nathan McPherson who has had little to no luck this time in. Was close up when resuming at Cranbourne behind Johnny Roo Boy before being freshened up and racing at the Valley where he was a hard luck story behind Roman Fizz in a messy race. Should do no work from gate one here and he gets the services of Craig Newitt.
