Gawler will play host to a rare Saturday metro program this weekend as a warm up for Boxing Day at Morphettville. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

[crownbetoffer]

Race One (13:15) : Sanders Fodder Plate 1100m:

Back Me: 1 Sharp Diamond (Bet Now: $4.40) for me here and with some confidence. This Tony McEvoy youngster has had two race day appearances, both of which have come over 1000m on the Parks track, starting off with a third to Carusmatic before improving next time out when a close up second to Phelps Glory. The debutantes are somewhat unknown, so I’ll go with what I’ve seen.
Big Danger: 7 Split Up (Bet Now: $4.40) is trained by Will Clarken and she is a filly that is also debuting with no public appearances. Stable is going really well though and they can be known to produce a handy youngster. Market will be the guide.
Long Shot: 5 It’s A Myth (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Phillip Stokes first starter that is yet to be seen in public. Daughter of Sepoy who is well bred and bred to come to hand early. Market will be the guide, but you have to respect the stable.

Race Two (13:50) : Goldin Farms Handicap (70) 1500m:

Back Me: 1 Northern Lass (Bet Now: $2.70) is starting to become a bit costly to follow but I am willing to give her another look here. She has been hard in the market at her past three and each time she has been beaten but has been far from disgraced, the latest coming a fortnight back at Morphettville over 1500m when beaten 1.5L by the above average Hanukkah Gold. Doesn’t look to be as much depth here and I am happy to be in her corner.
Big Danger: 3 Scarlett Fox (Bet Now: $5.0) took an age to wind up when racing in a Strathalbyn maiden a tick over two weeks back but the daughter of Foxwedge found plenty late under hard riding from Tourneur to get a narrow but strong and determined win. Form prior reads pretty well for a race like this, she has upside and looks a major contender.
Long Shot: 7 Eversaready (Bet Now: $7.00) is potentially the best horse in the race but is just doing plenty wrong during his races. He has bungled the start in all three runs this time in and he has just been giving away too much of a head start. To his credit, he has made up really good ground and been an eye catcher. He was 1400m back to 1200m last start, so back up to 1500m is a big tick, more so in a small field.

Race Three (14:25) : GBJC Volunteers Appreciation Handicap (82) 1700m:

Back Me: 3 Mail It In (Bet Now: $2.00) looks one of the better bets on the card. He ran over the mile at Morphettville two weeks back and was very good in defeat I thought behind Woakwine given he was back in the ruck and the race was dominated by those nearer the tempo. Up to 1700m looks perfect and the depth isn’t as strong here.
Big Danger: 1 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $8.50) also comes through that Woakwine and his effort also in defeat was more than sound I thought. He was another that just got way too far back in the run but still made up nice ground. Excellent record at Gawler and is right in this for sure.
Long Shot: 2 Hasta La Thomas (Bet Now: $11.00) came with a well timed run to get the job done first up at Mount Gambier before being sent to Warrnambool in the Port Fairy Cup where he got back in the run and couldn’t come on against the bias behind Judges. Despite that, the form has held up with Hijack Hussy winning at Flemington last week and being third up, he can bounce back.

Race Four (15:00) : Family Fun Day Jan 5 Maiden Plate 1200m:

Back Me: 14 Bewildering (Bet Now: $4.00) is a regally bred type that resumes for the Hayes/Dabernig yard. Debuted in July on the Pakenham Synthetic and was okay without being great. Trial win in preparation for this was good enough to suggest she will take some beating here if she brings that.
Big Danger: 11 Mint Collector (Bet Now: $3.00) is a handy galloper for Will Calrken who is knocking on the door to break the maiden tag. Debuted on Bong Bong Cup Day and was game and has run second in all three outings. Draws well, Poon steers and will love the rise to 1200m.
Long Shot: 4 Explosive Gift (Bet Now: $26.00) is a handy enough gelding for the John Hyam yard and though his last start was awful, go back to prior form and he does have some really good form behind subsequent proven city performers. This isn’t a strong maiden and Holder takes over, so perhaps an improver at odds.

Race Five (15:35) : Gawler South Bakery Handicap (70) 2100m:

Back Me: 3 Almahstique (Bet Now: $3.40) looks close to a good thing here. He ran over 2000m at Morphettville two weeks ago where he had a nice sit just off the speed before coming off the bit before the turn. Wasn’t really picking up, but he did the final 150m and surged late to just miss on picking up What’s In A Name. He is only third up, so he should have a stack of upside and rates highly to me.
Big Danger: 1 Bullitt County (Bet Now: $5.50) is on the back up after racing over 2000m on the course proper a couple of weeks back where he had a nice sit just off the speed and chased hard down the entire straight as he always does when running third to What’s In A Name. This is a lovely drop in depth for this hard fit galloper, and up to 2100m should only be a positive in my eyes.
Long Shot: 5 Gangster’s Run (Bet Now: $16.00) ran over the Murray Bridge mile last time out where he was far from disgraced I thought when running fifth to Rowdy Richard after getting back to near last in the run. He is only third up here, so he should have good upside and rates highly to my eye in a tricky affair.

Race Six (16:15) : Coopers Brewery Handicap (82) 1200m:

Back Me: 9 Tenere (Bet Now: $4.00) is probably the best horse in the race, but he is just an absolute loose cannon upstairs and has no idea. Won his lone start here and does perform well fresh, plus his trial win last week was sharp and the time backs up that statement. Big watch here from a market perspective.
Big Danger: 4 Glenrowan Prince (Bet Now: $3.00) is a tough galloper that also comes over from Victoria in strong form, this one trained by Kym Hann at Bendigo. He ran in the Italian Plate at Tatura a fortnight back and led at a good gallop, giving his rivals their chance, but he was just far too good for them.He can take a sit, and I think he will behind Kievann. That’s his only chance of winning.
Long Shot: 6 Deiheros (Bet Now: $13.00) is clearly the best horse in the race but just how well he is going remains to be seen. He has had two runs back from a decent break and was okay fresh before being outclassed and ridden upside down in the Marion. This is the easiest field he has contested for a very long time, he draws well, Neilson steers…gee if ever he is going to bounce back, it’s here.

Race Seven (16:55) : Merry Christmas Handicap (75) 1500m:

Back Me: 5 Halayr Rothestar (Bet Now: $6.00) looked the good thing of good things when racing at Murray Bridge under three weeks back and aided by a confident steer from apprentice Anna Jordsjo, the Stakes performed gelding proved far too classy for his rivals and spanked them. Ran well over 1250m in town the start prior in a strong form race, and he looks one of the hardest to beat for me here.
Big Danger: 8 Beau Rivage (Bet Now: $11.00) is on the seven day turnaround after racing over 1400m on the Parks track last Saturday where he just got a mile out of his ground yet finished off strongly late in the piece behind Tycoon Queen. He is giving the impression that the 1500m on a bigger track will suit him and he has reacted positively on the seven day back up previously.
Long Shot: There was a bit to like about the first up win of 7 Zolotoi (Bet Now: $11.00) at Balaklava given the son of Starcraft got a long way back in transit and finished off hard out wide under Matty Neilson to get the job done. He has got some really good form behind him, beautifully bred and has a stack of upside, plus there will be good speed here. Hard to beat.

Race Eight (17:33) : Schweppes Handicap (Class 2) 1100m:

Back Me: 2 Asimi (Bet Now: $9.00) was kept safe in betting when debuting at Murray Bridge a tick under three weeks back and didn’t really look likely at all but his final 75m was excellent as he savaged the line late to grab victory in the last stride. Bit to like about this gelding and despite a steep rise in depth, he has to be respected.
Big Danger: 5 Alaskan Jade (Bet Now: $2.80) ran over 1050m at Morphettville two weeks ago where she got back in the run before peeling wide and finishing her race off quite nicely despite getting badly held up early on when running third to One More Daisy, beaten just under two lengths. Just needs better luck here to be in the mix.
Long Shot: 4 The Castle Kat (Bet Now: $8.50) doesn’t win out of turn but is a very consistent type. This nine year old mare sat just off the speed in the Ready Sunshine race and fought on quite strongly to run fifth. Good record at Gawler and does look as though she will be near the speed and not doing much work.

BEST BET: Race Five Number 3 Almahstique
