A nine race card has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out 4.5 metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:02) Mandate Handicap (70) 1050m
6 Muddy Rope (Bet Now: $3.20) gets the nod for me. He ran over the 1000m at Ipswich last time out on the bog where he looked the winner a fair way out and ran accordingly, producing a lovely finale in the mud to win impressively. Proven wet tracker, proven in town, finds a winnable race and gets Lloyd steering.
5 Jetsonic (Bet Now: $6.50) is an above average son of Jet Spur that resumes for the Tony Gollan yard. He has the awful racing pattern of getting back and savaging the line, but we know if the breaks go his way, he can produce a booming finish to win. Looked sharp in a trial win here last week and is a bomb when produced fresh.
2 All Pluck (Bet Now: $9.00) is a stablemate of Jetsonic who is racing in career best form at the moment. He ran over the 1110m here last Wednesday and you could tell he was going to win a long way out,. He was trucking behind the speed and once Fancourt gave the horse clear air, the race was over. Back to 1050m suits and he’ll get his chance to launch.
Race 2. (13:37) Mandate Handicap 1050m
Pretty confident 2 Greyt Love (Bet Now: $7.50) can get the job done. Had her first run for the Les Kelly team over 900m at the Gold Coast on Feb 21 and was impressive in getting the job done, running fast time relative to the day. Has always shown promise and now she has the win on the board, she can go right on with it.
4 Gypsy Toff (Bet Now: $4.60) is the unknown. Tom Button trains this filly at Rockhampton who debuted on her home track off the back of an impressive trial performance and she absolutely bolted in under Nigel Seymour, running brilliant time and doing it with a bit in hand. Sustained speed…ideal recipe for Doomben.
16 Gemelli (Bet Now: $23.00) could be a sleeper at odds. Trialled up brilliantly at the Gold Coast prior to debuting at the Sunny Coast where not much went right for the gelding when a solid fifth to Racecourse Road. He handled the soft track in the trial beautifully and very rare you see the stable come to town, so a definite watch.
Race 3. (14:17) Mandate Plate (Class 3) 1630m
I think back to the mile will really suit 8 Shield Wall (Bet Now: $6.00). Chris Waller tried her out as a ten furlong+ horse but at metro level, she just doesn’t get it, with the last start effort behind Idle Situation the final straw. Been given a freshen up, back to the mile, back a fair bit in depth and Magorrian is riding super at the moment.
9 Shockfactor (Bet Now: $5.00) has had two runs back from a break, both coming at the Sunny Coast over 1200m and 1400m respectively. Placed behind Char Char first up before getting revenge on that horse next timeout under a lovely ride from Steph Lacy. Char char won again on Sunday so the form reads very well.
11 Akage (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Haradasun mare who is two for two this time in. Produced some great late splits to win the maiden first up at the Gold Coast and landing a long priced plunge before racing over the 1500m at Murwillumbah and repeated the dose, with the punters latching on again. Hardest test to date, but hard to knock a winner.
Race 4. (14:57) Mandate Handicap 1630m
Thought 2 My Diamantine (Bet Now: $4.40) was one of the better each way gambles on the program. This mare has done a great job with Brian Smith and I think he has got her going well this prep. Resumed over the 1350m a fortnight back and was warming to the task late before running out of puff behind Niccanova. Up to the mile a big tick and if the forecast for rain is right, she looks an even better chance.
6 Constantine (Bet Now: $4.90) is a son of Turffontein who is going really well at the moment for the Chris Munce. Lovely ride from McGillivray got him home last time out at this track/distance kicking for home at the right time and had the full momentum to get the job done. More depth here but has earned a crack.
4 Gully Command (Bet Now: $6.50) was scratched from an easier race at Gatton for this which is noteworthy. Ran over the 1350 here three weeks back and stuck on well in defeat behind Karakabeel, beaten around four lengths. Loves a track with give in it and beautifully in at the weights after the claim. Knockout chance for sure.
Race 5. (15:37) Mandate Handicap 2030m
Thought this was a lovely race for 10 Stanley (Bet Now: $7.50), a Michael Costa trained gelding. Ran last Friday over the sunny Coast mile where he sat on speed and looked to travel well under Jackson Murphy but given he was five weeks between runs, he was just found out late when a narrow third to Fast Arrow. Fitter now and looking for ten furlongs.
1 Morendi (Bet Now: $3.75) is the form horse of Queensland racing at the moment and continuing the picket fence certainly wouldn’t surprise. He knuckled down superbly over the 2200m here a fortnight back when chasing the hot speed Xebec set and nailed that horse right on the peg. Carries weight, handles all conditions…why not?
Up in trip should the Kevin Hickmott trained 6 War Baby (Bet Now: $9.00). She ran over 1800m last Saturday at the Gold Coast and I think her chances were gone when the track dried right out to a good four. Should get a bit more give in the track this Saturday and up to 2000m looks a big tick, plus Larry sticks.
Race 6. (16:22) Mandate Handicap (Class 6) 1200m
4 Suggan Buggan (Bet Now: $4.20) looks a great bet. He is low flying at the moment for the Rob Heathcoate stable, winning his past two in the space of eight days, firstly bolting up at the Sunny Coast before doing something similar over the 1350m here a fortnight ago. Back to 1200m a concern, but if we get a wet track, he’s a near moral.
2 Mr Marbellouz (Bet Now: $1.67) is the boom horse of Queensland racing at the moment and I can see no reason why he can’t continue the picket fence despite rising to this company. He stretched his brilliance to the six furlongs a fortnight back and he was outstanding in getting the win, leading throughout and running fast time. Should be on pace again and taking some beating.
3 Tailevent (Bet Now: $23.00) is a Haradasun gelding that resumes for the Bruce Hill team. He ran some solid races during the Winter last year, winning first up impressively mind you. He is a noted fresh performer, likes Doomben, handles a track with give in it, and has trialled up really well in readiness for his return.
Race 7. (17:02) Mandate Handicap (Class 6) 1200m
6 Criquette (Bet Now: $2.25) is a Wood/Gesler trained mare who is racing well at the moment. Attempted to lead all the way here a fortnight back and gave a good kick but just found Inspired Estelle too good, with that mare having the drop off Criquette and having last say. I think she can go one better with a cheap sectional on speed.
4 Viaductress (Bet Now: $2.80) is a really good mare for the Michael Costa team who just doesn’t know how to run a bad race. She ran over the 1280m at Ipswich last time out where she chased hard all the way under Ron Stewart and finished best to score. Has run well in town before and I think she has earned another crack.
10 Chase The Wind (Bet Now: $8.50) gets a great chance in town now with this race depleted by scratchings. Compltely unwanted in betting last time out at Murwillumbah but a lovely ride from Nothdurft got the mare home in a close go against the boys. Doesn’t mind a track with give and has only got 52kg after the claim.
Race 8. (17:37) Mandate Handicap 1110n
2 Tisani Tomso (Bet Now: $5.75) is a beauty for the Kevin Kemp yard. Rarely runs a bad race and always puts in, which was the case last time out over the six furlongs at Dalby when copping pressure throughout yet still finding on speed and kicking hard to win. Think he gets a lovely drop off the pace and the claim for Marshall is a big tick.
9 Our Beebee (Bet Now: $4.20) is a Rex Lipp trained mare that resumes. Her best efforts have come when produced fresh so she is definitely on guard with me. Had a mixed Spring prep where she ran well without winning. Thought she looked great in a Toowoomba trial win just on a month back and she looks ready to go.
3 Hi I’m Back (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented son of Sequalo that resumes for the Tony Gollan camp. This horse is dynamic early on in a prep so backing him and next start might be the go. Looked very sharp in a trial win here last Tuesday and though 1110m is probably short of his best, he certainly has enough quality to win.
Race 9. (18:15) Mandate Handicap 1350m
9 Tristan De Angel (Bet Now: $5.00) is the unknown. Matty Dunn trains this son of Not Single Doubt who is two for two to start his career. Beat up a weak field on debut at Lismore before going to Grafton a couple of Sundays back where he looked in a bit of trouble but really knuckled down late when challenge and was impressive I thought. He can measure up here for sure.
8 Don’t Leave Me Out (Bet Now: $3.75) is a Rob Heathcoate trained three year old who is racing really well at the moment but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Thought it would come at this track/distance a fortnight back but the Ben Currie three year old Hang proved too tough and too good. Draws better this time around and I think can turn the tables.
Forgive a horse for one poor run and I’ll do that with 4 Umberto (Bet Now: $12.00). He ran in the 3YO Jewel last Saturday where he just never got into the race out the back and was quite disappointing behind Sista Act. Much better suited here back at Doomben I feel and he is bred to swim, so don’t be surprised to see him bounce back hard.
