Eight races has been set down for Sandown Hillside this Wednesday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out twelve metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:40) Ladbrokes Mdn Plate 1500m
It’s hard seeing anything other than a win for 2 Bellinger (Bet Now: $1.85) for the Hayes/Dabernig camp. Has been a close runner up in both runs this time in, coming at Pakenham over 1200m and 1400m respectively. Third up now, he’s hard fit and does find what looks to be a rather thin maiden.
1 Buble Boy (Bet Now: $7.50) gets a significant gear change of Jamie Kah on first time. He ran over 1400m at Pakenham last start and I’m not sure what happened. He got back in the run and just didn’t fire a shot, which followed a couple of promising runs that suggested a maiden win was nearby. The jockey upgrade is significant.
9 Entitled Princess (Bet Now: $20.00) rises a bit in depth from her debut, but it was an encouraging first run at Wodonga. Got back off the speed and worked to the line pretty well without threatening. Gets a suck run from the draw…not sure I could back her to win, but she’s one for wider exotics.
Race 2. (16:15) Ive Print (rs0mw) 1000m
Ideal kick off point for 1 Feudal Empire (Bet Now: $3.40), on debut for the Maher/Eustace camp. He’s had a couple of Cranbourne jumpouts to get ready for start one, the latest piece of work seeing him move very nicely between runners and going on to win. Jamie Kah rides from a good draw…looks the one to beat.
5 Starry Legend (Bet Now: $3.80) is a son of Zoustar for John Sadler that is on debut. He’s had two jumpouts at Caulfield to get ready. Hasn’t been pieces of work where you can jump up and down about, but it’s been solid enough to suggest he can be competitive in a race like this, so keen to see how he goes.
8 Tempest Charm (Bet Now: $2.80) can run a bold race back to this level. They tried to get her to a Blue Diamond via the Prelude, but she didn’t quite measure up behind Arcaded over the 1100m fresh. Better suited in a 1000m scamper like this and had jumped out well prior to the resumption.
Race 3. (16:50) Clanbrooke Racing (bm70) 1500m
The yard will tell you if 3 White Hibiscus (Bet Now: $2.10) is on song or not. Like most, thought she was a good thing when racing at Flemington last time out, but she paraded terribly, sweated up badly and ran up to that parade with an average effort. Off the win prior at Sandown, she’ll just about win this.
Think a rise to 1500m will suit 2 Don’tteltheboss (Bet Now: $5.00) for the Griffiths/De Kock team. She ran over 1300m here last Wednesday when back near last in the run and working home strongly late without threatening behind Knowles. Racing as if the extra ground will suit and won’t be far off with the small field.
Giving respect to 4 Jessica Rae (Bet Now: $7.50). Grahame Begg trained mare that found a thin race at Kyneton last time but it was the manner in which she put them away. She spanked them, winning by a space and was strong to the line in winning. Harder here, but is well in at the weights after the claim and is a knockout chance.
Race 4. (17:25) Thoroughbred Club (bm64) 2400m
Comes here straight out of maiden grade, but confident that 5 Paris Pike (Bet Now: $5.00) can measure up. It was a moderate maiden he won last start at Sale, but he gapped them by over eight lengths and on times the same meeting, he ran some 10+ lengths faster time than Fintona Queen, so keen to see how he goes against some seasoned campaigners.
Think if 1 Aurora’s Symphony (Bet Now: $4.20) is to win, he needs to lead and get control, which is likely when looking at a potential speed map. Led throughout to win at Colac over 2000m last time under a lovely front running steer from an in form Joe Bowditch. Creeping up in relative weights, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
11 Cheners (Bet Now: $35.00) can sneak a first four spot for Eric Musgrove, with eyes towards the jumps season. He ran at Moe last time over this trip and worked home okay without threatening. Given a sharp jumps trial win to tune him up for this, and often we see these stayers, a bit of jump work can sharpen them up.
Race 5. (18:00) Tile Importer Hcp (c1) 1500m
Sometimes you have to look at horses from a different angle and treat them as new animals on occasions. I’m treating 12 Tycoon Bucks (Bet Now: $3.70) as a different horse with Blinkers applied. They went on first time in a Ballarat maiden last time out and she was just a different horse. Great change up speed and she was impressive. Off that, hard to beat here.
1 D’Jumbuck (Bet Now: $5.50) is hard fit and racing well for Brian McGrath. Comes here off the back of a maiden win when sitting wide throughout but he found plenty under pressure and on the line, was strongest. He’s a very genuine horse that does try hard and once again, another horse that Jamie Kah has figured out.
6 Laybuy (Bet Now: $12.00) is third up from a spell and should be at peak fitness. Narrow second up first up under the lights at Pakenham before going to 1300m here when sitting back in the run and closing off okay in an on pace dominated race behind Naval Envoy. His best is certainly good enough.
Race 6. (18:30) Ladbrokes Switch (bm64) 1800m
One of the better bets on the card for me here in the shape of 10 Kanzai (Bet Now: $4.40). Impressive first up winner at Geelong over 1500m before remaining at the trip when racing here. Left flat footed when the sprint went on, but was strong at the end. She’ll eat up 1800m here and will take a power of beating.
5 Harmony Nation (Bet Now: $4.60) could be a sleeper for a race like the SA Derby. He didn’t beat much first up over the mile at Donald, but it was the way he won which impressed me. Sat back, did plenty wrong, but he stretched out like a good horse. He’s heading in the right direction so keen to see how he goes.
4 Sign Seal Deliver (Bet Now: $5.50) is a very interesting runner. Resumes for Matt Cumani and I do like he is first up at 1800m, not wasting a run over a shorter distance. He’s a real stayer this guy, very one paced that will just keep on keeping on. His best is certainly good enough, but from a win bet perspective, happy to watch, but can include in exotics.
Race 7. (19:00) Mrc Members (bm64) 1000m
Interesting runner is 2 Harlem Blues (Bet Now: $3.10). Returns to racing as a gelding for the Snowden camp and the form around him from last prep doesn’t read too bad for a race like this. His two runs from the Spring were in tidy races and he was far from disgraced each time he has stepped out. Trialled well leading in and gets Jamie Kah.
Last prep, they tried to stretch 4 Dynamic Duo (Bet Now: $4.20) out to 1400m, but from what I have seen, I think he is far more effective over a sprint trip, so 1000m here I like for him. He resumed at this trip at Ballarat and worked home strongly from the back behind Humzz. He’ll sit off a fast speed and launch late.
7 Private Lounge (Bet Now: $6.50) is a very interesting watch here. Talented mare that was formerly with Andrew Payne but is now with Patrick Payne. Any hint of her best, and she would beat these. She just has an awful racing pattern of flopping out the back and leaving herself with too much to do. New stable, new environment…keen to see how she goes.
Race 8. (19:30) Quayclean (bm64) 1300m
8 Mr Raikkonen (Bet Now: $4.40) in the get out. I’m always wary of tipping/backing horses that had a run but it was more a barrier trial, but it was a proper barrier trial for him at the Valley. He had no luck at all behind Foxy Lady and with clear air, I think he goes close to winning. Market support first up suggested he’s come back well and back to this kind of race, hard to beat.
5 Stretto (Bet Now: $4.40) is a talented son of Nicconi for Matt Cumani that resumes. This four year old hasn’t raced since July 18 at Flemington when a strong second to Right You Are, only going down late in a close finish. Liked his recent Ballarat jumpout and does have a touch of quality.
12 Cirrina (Bet Now: $9.00) is a knockout chance. Resumed several weeks ago at Caulfield against the Mares and gee it was ugly viewing if you were on. She should have fought the finish out but couldn’t get any clear running. Form out of that race has been strong and better luck this time around, she can win.
