Nine races will be run and won at Doomben this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
** ABANDONED **
Race 1. (13:32) Midori Handicap 2040m
Several of these come through a mile race here a fortnight back, won by 2 Epic Rant (Bet Now: $1.90), and I’m happy to side with him. He was still a maiden prior to that win but aided by a lovely ride off the pace by Michael Cahill, he got the split at the right time and finished best to score narrowly but impressively. Up to 2040m, like most here, is a query, but I think he has the upside.
1 Pinch Passion (Bet Now: $3.00) ran a beauty at the Sunny Coast two back before going to that race won by Epic Rant where I thought he was most disappointing given he did run well prior. Never really looked likely this day. He is a real enigma that can turn it up at times, but on his best form, he’s certainly good enough.
3 Iowa (Bet Now: $4.60) is a Chris Waller trained filly who got a mile back in the Epic Rant race but I thought her finale was more than sound, finishing off nicely to be beaten just under three lengths by the Michael Costa three year old. She is one who you’d think will appreciate the extra trip, and she’s in the right stable.
Race 2. (14:07) Sofitel Brisbane Central Handicap (90) 2040m
Going to have an each way look at 8 Stanley (Bet Now: $5.00). I reckon third up at a staying trip, he can do something here. He ran over the mile here two weeks ago and tried hard under laddy Cassidy but he just ran out of condition late when fourth to Vaulting Ambition. Gets out to an ideal distance now and has upside. I’m happy to be in his corner.
4 Exoteric (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who was a strong first up winner over 1800m at the Gold Coast before racing at this track/distance on the bog three weeks back and working home okay but never looked likely on the ground behind Perilous Love. Much better horse on top of the ground so he gets conditions to suit here.
2 Morendi (Bet Now: $5.00) is a beauty for the Darren Graham team. He ran over 2200m here a fortnight back and I thought it was a really good ride from Michael Cahill. He sat back off the reasonable tempo and had last say on those in front, who went far too keen on speed. Back to the 2040m is of some concern, but he’s the class factor.
Race 3. (14:42) Laser Clinics Toombul Handicap 1350m
2 Plumaro (Bet Now: $1.60) should be winning. She did an enormous job here a fortnight back. Never looked likely. Was scrubbed along throughout, spotted them a huge start yet rattled home and only went down 3/4. The rise to 1350m looks absolutely ideal and the blinkers come off now. Happy to be in her corner.
8 Nooks And Crannies (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Denman filly for Aquis Farm and Toby Edmonds who was a heavily backed odds on pop when racing on her home track at the Gold Coast a fortnight back where she attempted to lead all the way and to her credit, she gave a decent kick, but was outgunned late by Mystic Mist. Firmer footing should help her cause and she’ll be on speed.
6 Miss Sara (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Les Ross trained filly who was hard in the market when resuming at the Sunny Coast where she had a nice run off pace and tried hard but had to settle for third to Erringhi Spring. She is one who should love the rise to the 1350m and now she has the run under the belt after the resumption.
Race 4. (15:17) Thyme Restaurant At Sofitel Brisbane Central Plate (Class 3) 1110m
12 Black Mink (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented filly for the Liam Birchley camp who last raced on a bog at the Sunny Coast and bolted up under in form apprentice Adam Sewell, loving the conditions. She can be a bit hit and miss at times, but now she has the win on the board, I am hoping she can go on with it here.
8 Lifesaver (Bet Now: $10.00) is heading towards the Grafton qualifier for the Country Championships and he is using this as a final lead up. I thought his resumption here a fortnight back over the 1050m was outstanding. Spotted them a huge start and never really looked likely but his last 200m behind Mr Marbellouz was excellent, clocking some very fast late splits. Think he’s already wanting 1200m+, but if they overdo it here, he’s the pony.
3 Muddy Rope (Bet Now: $27.00) is a talented gelding for the Chris Anderson yard who was the subject of a significant plonk at the Gold Coast, sitting near the speed before being presented clear air and finishing best in a driving go. Has run well in town before so the step up in grade is no issue and stable is going along nicely.
Race 5. (15:57) William Patrick Clarke Memorial Handicap 1350m
1 Snitz (Bet Now: $2.30) is a very smart three year old for the Matty Dunn camp who is heading towards the Grafton Heat for the Country Championships. Was hard in the market when resuming over 1200m here a fortnight back against his own age and he produced the goods under a lovely ride from Fradd. Up to 1350m looks ideal and he only has upside.
6 Umberto (Bet Now: $6.50) is bursting to win a race and I think he gets a great chance here. He ran over the 1200m a fortnight back and closed off well but was no match for the brilliance of Snitz, who is a leading contender for the Country Championships. Both of his career wins have come at this track/distance, so he looks ready.
7 Grey Missile (Bet Now: $27.00) is the x factor. North Queensland three year old for the Roy Chillemi team who has won both starts this time in. Looked in all sorts last time out over the 950m on a bottomless Cairns surface but once he picked up, he put them away rather comfortably. Toughest test to date, but he deserves a crack.
Race 6. (16:37) Megaport Mile Handicap (Class 6) 1640m
1 All Summer Long (Bet Now: $4.80) just looks so well placed here by the Kris Lees team. This gelding appreciated a fast speed last time out over 1850m on his home track at Newcastle and once he was popped clear air, it was game over and he won as he pleased. Finds a very winnable race here and I’m quite keen on his chances.
12 Kuttamurra Al (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Ben Currie trained middle distance horse who has come back in super order. Defied a betting drift to bolt up at Toowoomba before going to Ipswich where he closed off well behind Savwell. You’d like to think that is a strong form line for this event and being third up, he should be near peak fitness.
5 Atouchmore (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Onemorenomore gelding for the Matt Kropp stable at Toowoomba who is racing very well at the moment. He ran over 1400m at the Gold Coast a fortnight back where he sat outside Plucky Girl in the run and tried hard but that mare had it too good on speed and darted clear for a spank job, but this bloke stuck to his guns in defeat. Is a winner at the mile so the step up is no dramas
Race 7. (17:17) Prive249 Restaurant At Sofitel Brisbane Central Handicap (70) 1350m
11 Mr Belaggio (Bet Now: $4.00) is back from a little break for the Liam Birchley team. He hasn’t raced since Australia Day when absolutely bolting up at this track/distance and giving them a real galloping lesson. He does tend to race well on the fresh side and he has the right form around. Happy to be with him in an open race.
4 Salmanazar (Bet Now: $15.00) is a real nutter. You really don’t have a clue which version of him will turn up. There are some days when he looks brilliant, which he was first up here. Then last start…he stopped as if Lee Harvey Oswald got him from the grandstand. On his best form, he’d beat these. But he’s here because trust…not there.
10 Gregory (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Brian Smith trained gelding who can be hard to catch himself but one thing we do know about him is that he is talented. He ran over the 1350m at Ipswich a couple of Wednesdays back and I thought he was okay without being great behind a potential blacktype performer in Savwell. Better suited here and with pace on, he’ll get his chance.
Race 8. (17:57) Blokes Day Out Raceday Handicap 1350m
7 Plucky Girl (Bet Now: $3.70) is a mare that is absolutely flying at the moment for the Toby Edmonds camp. This girl was an alarming drifter in betting when racing over 1400m at the Gold Coast a fortnight back but she defied that and bolted in under Glen Colless. Steps back up to city grade, and takes on the big boys and girls, but hard to ignore her.
I am still not sure how 4 Fortensky (Bet Now: $2.60) won last Saturday. Looked a good thing on paper but gee he was in an awful spot 250m out. Somehow, Fradd got him clear air and he burst through between runners to nab them right on the peg. He’ll be charging again. Faces much more depth this time around.
3 Flamboyer (Bet Now: $16.00) is two weeks between runs for the Kelly Doughty team after racing at this track/distance where he sat just off the speed and tried hard but just couldn’t dash when required, settling for fifth to Old North. No horse of that class here, and if he can get on speed without doing much work, he’ll take some beating.
Race 9. (18:35) Starlight Family Raceday Handicap (0MW) 1200m
8 Amenzel (Bet Now: $4.80) for me, just. This bloke is in a real purple patch at the moment for the Les Kelly team, winning his past three, all of which have been over 1200m on his home track at the Gold Coast. I guess that is the query. Can he do it away from his home track and at Doomben? I’ll trust the stable to have him right.
9 Break Time (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Ben Currie trained gelding who was heavily backed when resuming over 1000m on his home track at Toowoomba and despite a few nervous moments in the run, you were pretty comfortable in the end as he got the job done. Unbeaten since arriving from Victoria and though he faces his toughest challenge to date, I’d be surprised if he didn’t measure up.
6 Upstart (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Maryann Brosnan trained gelding who hasn’t raced since resuming at Muwillumbah in early January where he got back and closed off nicely late in the piece behind Viceman, who has run well since. Was scratched from an easier race at the Gold Coast on Wednesday in preference for this.
