An eight race card has been set down for Ascot this Saturday where it is Detonator Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:49) Penang Club Trophy 1200m
Tricky two year old race but going with 6 Magic Planet (Bet Now: $5.00). This is a gelding on debut for the Adam Durrant team after a couple of barrier trial wins, both over 400m. The first one came back in October before winning one last Monday. 400m trials are hard to read, but visually, he looked pretty good, and stable/jock combo is lethal.
9 Alcina (Bet Now: $17.00) was a drifter in betting when debuting here last Wednesday but after being left alone in front, she showed good change up speed and went right on with the job for a commanding win. Has to overcome the nasty draw, but I think she has the pace to do it. Definite threat if that eventuates.
8 Party Night (Bet Now: $26.00) is a stablemate of Alcina who is a fortnight between runs since contesting the Magic Millions at Pinjarra where she sat on speed and tired late behind Valour Road. Blinkers go on first time for this filly and I think 1200m is a stretch for her, so back to 1000m should see her perform much better.
Race 2. (16:29) Perak Turf Club Trophy 1200m
6 Showcase (Bet Now: $2.60) is a smart looking filly for the Williams camp who was a hard even money pop when resuming at this track/distance a tick over a fortnight back but got a mile off them and gave away too much start when second to Atlanta Blue. Hopefully won’t be far away from the good draw and young Parnham is riding in super form.
2 Pearl Trade (Bet Now: $4.20) had been bursting to win a race for some time and she finally got that well deserved victory three weeks back at this track/distance when getting the perfect drag up behind the speed, angling into clear air and dashing away for a dominant performance. No reason why she can’t repeat the dose.
7 Sunboss (Bet Now: $8.00) is a four start maiden by Sebring for the Trevor Andrews team who ran at this track/distance last Wednesday and ran on strongly late before just running out of condition when third to Abdicator, who I like in the next. Think he might want 1400m, but off that last start, I’m including him for sure.
Race 3. (17:09) Selangor Turf Club Trophy (66+) 1400m
Great to see 4 Money Maher (Bet Now: $2.60) back at the races. He was one of the real stars of the WA Carnival last year, highlighted by a stunning win in the Fairetha, which made him the one to beat in the WA Guineas where nothing really went right behind Perfect Jewel. He was then far from disgraced in the Kingston Town. That reads so well for this and he has trialled up nicely.
3 Sweet Ora (Bet Now: $3.20) is a beauty for the Adam Durrant team. She rarely puts in a bad one and she should be ready to go here. Ran a fortnight back at Pinjarra over 1400m in the Pearl Classic where she sat near the speed and gave a good kick but no match late for the in form Royal Missile. That form reads well and she has the fitness edge.
6 Elegant Blast (Bet Now: $6.50) is a quality staying mare that resumes for the Justin Warwick team. This girl hasn’t raced since the early part of the Spring when sitting near the pace throughout to win at Belmont. She will be better over further, but she has had three solid trials to prepare, an indicator for mine she’s ready to go.
Race 4. (17:49) Tabtouch Handicap (72+) 1500m
You’d like to think only bad luck gets 7 Western Temple (Bet Now: $2.05) beat here. On the quick back up after racing over the mile here last Saturday where he got a mile back off them but gee his last 250m was outstanding when rounding them up and winning with ease. Just the slight concern back to 1500m, but it’s only slight.
1 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $3.90) is a beauty for the Neville Parnham team. Four weeks between runs since racing over 1400m here where he looked to travel a touch keenly on pace but gave a good kick, only to be outgunned late by Eleven Seconds, who has won again since and is a horse I’m keen on in the feature. That reads well for this.
9 Sonnen (Bet Now: $20.00) is a handy son of Blackfriars that resumes for the Stephen Miller camp. This bloke had a pretty solid Spring prep, including a win over 2100m at Belmont. His best form will come at 2000m+, but he has trialled up quite nicely for his return and has placed four from six when produced fresh.
Race 5. (18:25) Singapore Turf Club Trophy (66+) 1800m
10 Stoicism (Bet Now: $2.90) is a martin Allan trained gelding who is absolutely flying at the moment. This bloke scored a barnstorming win over 1400m here before stepping up to the Pinjarra mile where he again got a mile back off them yet rattled home to run a close up second to Storm Dancer. 1800m is perfect and hopefully won’t be far away from the draw.
5 Rare Coin (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Brett Pope trained gelding who looks to be going really well. Three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where I thought Staeck gave the four year old a dream sit near the speed and the horse pounced at the right time to get the win. Harvey takes over now and hard to knock the way this horse is going.
7 Blue Tracer (Bet Now: $61.00) is a 14 start maiden for the Donna Baillie team but he is racing much better than that record suggests. He ran over this track/distance last Wednesday where he sat off a slow tempo and couldn’t come on, not quickening well enough when a close up fourth. Not sure he can win, but a must for exotics.
Race 6. (19:05) Australia Chinese Times Detonator Stakes 1800m
Siding with 9 Eleven Seconds (Bet Now: $1.90) to continue the picket fence. This bloke is in a purple patch for the Chris Gangemi team. Bolted up a fortnight back over the Pinjarra mile last time out, sitting outside the speed before taking control upon straightening and pretty much recording a painless win. Confident he can measure up.
8 Falcon Crest (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented galloper for the Williams camp who is first up here. He hasn’t raced since the Perth Cup when finishing down the track, along with being outclassed, behind Material Man. He is three from six when produced and given his record, I think he gets in really well at the weights.
4 Woodsville (Bet Now: $11.00) attempted to lead all the way and beat Eleven Seconds in that race mentioned above and I thought Warwick gave the gelding every chance, controlling things sweetly, but just lacked the turn of foot to go with Eleven Seconds. Think something similar happens again, but he is a place chance.
Race 7. (19:42) AGCI Handicap (72+ 1200m
10 Star Glitter (Bet Now: $20.00) looks a great each way play for mine. Neville Parnham trains this gelding, who is five weeks between runs since racing over 1100m here where he got back to near last in the run but worked home strongly late behind Royal Missile, who has gone right on with it since. Form reads well for this.
8 Ragnar’s Saga (Bet Now: $4.60) is a nice looking son of Lonhro resuming for the Simon Miller camp. This bloke hasn’t raced since early September over the Belmont mile where he sat outside the speed and dashed clear for a dominant victory. Thought he trialled up really well here last Tuesday and is a noted fresh performer.
2 Get Over It (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Lindsey Smith trained of Saxon resuming. This bloke hasn’t raced for 11 weeks since racing at this track/distance when sitting off pace and launching late when the splits came to get the job done. Is a first up, likes Ascot, has trialled well leading in and gets Brodie Kirby steering.
Race 8. (20:17) Year Of The Dog Handicap (1MW) 1200m
11 Regal Moon (Bet Now: $4.00) looks a safe play in the get out. This Testa Rossa mare for Team Williams is three weeks between runs since racing over 1400m here where she got a mile back off them but worked home with real purpose late to run second to Stoicism, who ran a beauty at Pinjarra and is a horse I’m keen on earlier in the day. Just has to overcome the sticky draw.
14 Fine Scent (Bet Now: $4.60) looks a promising type for the Simon Miller yard. Bolted up fresh at Pinjarra in a maiden before racing there again in the Magic Millions where I thought he was far from disgraced behind Epic Grey. Third up now, so he should be close to peak fitness, down in the weights and maps ideally.
1 Megafactory (Bet Now: $21.00) doesn’t have the greatest of winning strike rates but one thing he does have is guts and courage. Ran at this track/distance three weeks ago where he got back near last on the rail and worked home okay late behind Royal Missile, who franked the form a week later. Draws well and should be included in multiples.
