A strong nine race card has been set down for Rosehill this Saturday, with the feature race being the Golden Gift (1100m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:35) Golden Gift 1100m
I’ll cop the tip with 3 Cardiff (Bet Now: $2.60). Gerald Ryan trains this colt and he’s fairly bullish about his prospects. Easy to see why with a couple of sharp trial wins under the belt, the latest coming at Canterbury where he bolted in and ran time. If you’re going sub 54 at Canterbury in a trial, you’re generally going very well.
4 Spaceboy (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Gary Portelli trained youngster having his first start. He’s had the one trial, which came over 800m at Warwick Farm where he led all the way, bolted in by six and ran okay time for the morning. He’ll likely get to the rail first then either hold the lead or hand up to Cardiff. Either way, he’ll get the right run.
1 Jonah (Bet Now: $5.50) looks a really nice colt for the Snowden team who debuted at Rosehill three weeks back where he was given a lovely ride from Andrew Atkins and ran some really good splits up until the 200m where condition just gave out. Think he’s one of the hardest to beat and he’s got the run under the belt behind a good one in Time To Reign.
Race 2. (13:15) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1500m
It’ll be interesting to see if 2 Nothin Like Harry (Bet Now: $5.00) can measure up. He produced an outstanding prep in the Autumn, highlighted by a placing in the Wagga Guineas which followed a down the track effort in the Albury Cup so the stable clearly rate him highly and the first up win at Albury with 62kg on his back was enormous. Keen to see how he goes.
7 Carillon (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Craig Martin trained gelding who strung together a couple of sharp wins prior to racing in a Highway here a fortnight back over 1400m and you could make a very good case he should have fought the finish out, getting no luck in the straight when seemingly bolting. Has to be respected.
11 Elegant Ellen (Bet Now: $9.00) is being touted as a possible Country Championships galloper so if she’s to head down that path, she’d want to be performing well here. Hasn’t raced in over three weeks since leading all the way and bolting up to win at the Sapphire Coast. Gets a good run from the draw and is down in the weights.
Race 3. (13:50) Summer Hospitality @ ATC Sprint (88) 1200m
I like 7 Problem Solver (Bet Now: $5.00). Really good mare who deserves blacktype success and I think she gets her chance. Resumed on September 29 at Randwick where she ran a strong third to Maximus in a race which has produced a few winners. Freshened up and has been kept ticking over with a strong trial last week at Canterbury.
6 Demerara (Bet Now: $4.00) second best. James Cummings trains this talented filly, who hasn’t raced since the Whylie in Adelaide where she was four/five wide throughout and dropped out to finish tailed off. She’s clearly better than that, so put a line through that run. Recent trial was very good and at her best, she should just about be beating these.
9 Star Reflection (Bet Now: $20.00) is a Kris Lees trained mare who resumed over this track/distance three weeks back where she is normally a mare who needs the run under the belt and that’s how it panned out behind Newsfan. Has a much better second up record and the trials leading up to the resumption were encouraging.
Race 4. (14:25) 2019 Membership Handicap (88) 1800m
One last chance for 7 Fierce Impact (Bet Now: $4.80). Like most, I was really keen on him when he raced over 1500m here three weeks ago, with the Matty Smith trained galloper heavily backed but you’d have to mark him down as just fair behind Don’t Give A Damn. Up to 1800m, he appears well suited with upside…but he’s getting to last chance territory.
5 Etymology (Bet Now: $9.50) is racing in really good form this prep for James Cummings but can’t quite crack it for a win. He was specked at odds over 2000m on Stakes Day at Flemington where he was held up for a bit before eventually getting clear and launching late to just miss out on picking up Top Prospect. Gets a sweet trip from a soft draw and he’ll be strong at the end.
9 Live And Free (Bet Now: $10.00) should just about be ready to show his best fourth up from a spell. Ran over 1800m at Flemington on Oaks Day where Tommy Berry gave the four year old every chance just behind the speed but was no match late for the brilliance of Savacool. One start at this track/distance for an impressive win and should be hard fit now.
Race 5. (15:00) ATC Tipping Competition Handicap (88) 1300m
4 Cradle Mountain (Bet Now: $1.70) is the horse to beat given his lovely racing style of sustained speed from the front. That was the case when he won over 1200m here three weeks ago, his first run since a hamstring injury during the Scone Carnival. I question what he beat, but he’s got the racing pattern and winning strike rate to command respect.
6 Tip Top (Bet Now: $16.00) is the one to respect. On face value, he was disappointing at this track/distance a fortnight back behind Dyslexic, but the mounting yard experts said he was big in condition and had plenty of room for improvement, so I’m willing to forget that run and give him another chance with the run under the belt.
2 New Universe (Bet Now: $19.00) can certainly beat these if he brought something near his best form. He was solid enough I thought last time out in the Ladies Day Cup at Hawkesbury behind Pecans, and was slow to recover post race. Good record on his home track and he could easily win this with his A game.
Race 6. (15:40) Tab.com.au Handicap (78) 1200m
12 Montrachet (Bet Now: $4.80) for me. There were plenty who were keen on her when she resumed over 1100m here a fortnight back and on the turn, it looked no betting, but she just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Falerina. Think she’ll take good improvement from that and up to 1200m is a big tick.
10 Deity (Bet Now: $3.60) is a James Cummings trained mare who should take beating here. Ran over 1200m on Cup Day at Randwick where she had to chase the speed set by Niccobelle and while she couldn’t reel him in, he tried very hard and would have won in another hop. Form out of that has been good so she rates highly.
5 Island Missile (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Smart Missile gelding resuming for the Snowden camp. This bloke hasn’t raced since August 11 over 1400m here where he got well back but finished off with real purpose late to run a close up fourth to Mapmaker. Not a fresh horse really, but his two trials leading in have been quite encouraging.
Race 7. (16:20) Country Classic 2000m
I am hoping we can get a price about 8 Most Exalted (Bet Now: $7.00) because I’m really keen on his chances. Mack Griffith trains this bloke, who comes here off the back of a mile run at Randwick on Cup Day where he got well back in the run but finished off okay late behind Danzie. His form is a tad misleading at 2000m. Both runs at the trip and beyond he’s been on wet track and he hates them. 1900m record is very good, but the key to him is dry tracks.
3 Allzin (Bet Now: $9.50) a definite threat for me. He ran okay in this race last year and appears as if he’s been set for it once again. Solid effort first up in the Taree Cup, then didn’t appear to handle Lismore in their Cup. Freshened and went to Newcastle where he was given a lovely steer by Belinda Hodder to get the win. He’s a handy country stayer who will love the step up to 2000m.
5 Bezel (Bet Now: $7.50) is having his first look at the trip but appears as though he’ll be suited. He ran in the Cotton Cup (1600m) at Warren last time and never really looked likely given where he was in the run but was far from disgraced for mine behind Dapperized. Got the talent. Just an unknown at a strong 2000m.
Race 8. (17:00) Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (78) 1500m
14 Napoleon Solo (Bet Now: $3.80) looks a talented colt for the Snowden camp who was at a very short quote when racing on Cup Day at Randwick and despite taking some hard riding to get into his work, he attacked the line late and proved far too good to break the maiden tag. Harder here, but he looks a likely type.
3 Turnberry (Bet Now: $6.50) was somewhat unwanted in betting when he resumed with a win here a fortnight back over 1400m but there was plenty of merit to the performance. He was one of the first off the bit and for a moment looked as if he’d just plug on for a 4th/5th, but he surged late and got there to win. Tricky draw, but he seems to be flying and has upside.
15 Stock Up (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Scott Singleton trained mare who looks to have really turned the corner this time. Strong resuming win to break the maiden tag at Hawkesbury before going to Newcastle where she looked to travel like Phar Lap in the run and was never going to get beat. Harder here clearly, but a mare in form, hard fit now and with only 50kg, she appeals.
Race 9. (17:40) #theraces Handicap (78) 1500m
13 Volpe (Bet Now: $23.00) is a few weeks between runs after racing over the 1300m here on Derby Day where trainer Danny Williams told me the trip was a tad short but that is how it panned out behind Schubert. Would like him over further, which he is. He’s fitter and overall, this isn’t the strongest of races, and he does boast a win over I Am Serious.
12 Campari (Bet Now: $2.50) is a Stephen Marsh trained mare who got the job done impressively first up in a Gosford maiden before having the second up syndrome at Warwick Farm. Then went to Randwick on Cup Day where she was there for the third up bounce back, was well supported and was impressive. Confident she can measure up.
1 Conarchie (Bet Now: $34.00) could run a much improved race here. Forget he went around over 1400m here a fortnight back given he missed the kick and was forced to sit near last, which put pay to his chances given he’s an on speed. If he jumps, he should land near the front and looks stupid overs at $61+.
