An eight race card has been assembled to be run and won at Belmont this Saturday, with the depth looking okay across the program. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:23) Tabtouch Maiden 1400m
I think 4 Savuno (Bet Now: $4.00) can get away with the opener here. Five year old gelding who has been excellent in two runs back from a break, the latest coming 30 days ago over the 1500m at Pinjarra where he had to settle for a close up second to the well performed Golgotha. Back to 1400m off the break is no issue and he is the one on form.
7 Burning Magic (Bet Now: $4.60) is a gutsy mare for the Parnham yard. Problem is she doesn’t win and hasn’t yet. Last start came at this track/distance a fortnight back where she had three wide cover and tried hard when fourth to A Fair Lady. Draws okay, a win is near…I think. Overall, this maiden is thin.
3 Bristol Road (Bet Now: $7.50) was somewhat unwanted in betting when resuming in the race won by A Fair Lady mentioned above. But his effort was tidy. Had the box seat run throughout, got the run, dashed and just ran out of condition late as the winner came home out wider. Should improve off that and looks value.
Race 2. (16:03) Fifth Leg Plate 1200m
1 Money Maher (Bet Now: $1.75) looks the best bet across Australia for the weekend. I am a huge fan of this bloke and I think he will be a force in the Carnival if they head that way. Breathtaking first up win at Northam to break the maiden before backing up nine days later and running some of the fastest splits of the day to record a dominant win. Only bad luck beats him.
3 Resistance (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented filly first up for the Fred Kersley team. This girl hasn’t raced since April 29 at Ascot where she finished down the track behind Fabergino and she did look a tired horse that day. Been given a good spell and has been tuned up for her return with a couple of trials alongside some nice types in good time. Pike booked a lead maybe.
4 Arrum Boy (Bet Now: $8.50) is a seven start maiden for the Steve Wolfe but his race record doesn’t justify the talent he has. He ran here last Saturday at the 1000m and tried very hard when a close up third to Dynamite Dream in a blanket finish. I think the rise to 1200m is ideal and he maps okay.
Race 3. (16:43) Prive Fashion Platform Handicap (1MW) 1000m
4 Glimmer Girl (Bet Now: $3.20) is a talented mare that is first up for the Williams team. She hasn’t raced since April 1 over the 1000m at Ascot where she came with a well timed run under Chris Parnham to win impressively in a race which has seen four subsequent winners, some multiple, so that form reads very well, and her recent trial win was outstanding.
6 Undisclosed (Bet Now: $6.00) is a talented mare for the Colin Webster yard but she does need things to fall into place for her. She resumed in the race won by Floyd and it was a total forgive given she was wide no cover on speed. I think her best chance to win will be if Turner lets her roll and lead. If that happens, she’ll take some stopping.
2 Tenterden (Bet Now: $10.00) is a handy sprinter that resumes for the Pearce yard. This bloke hasn’t raced since early May over 1000m at Ascot when sitting on sped and fighting on okay late when third to Aerozine. Got a good fresh record, he has run well on rain affected ground before and maps well.
Race 4. (17:20) Crown Towers Handicap (1MW) 1400m
Taking a chance on the mare 9 Vega Dior (Bet Now: $6.50). Sean Casey trained four year old who had trialled up a storm prior to resuming in a 1200m maiden at Pinjarra 30 days ago and aided by a lovely ride from Parnham, the mare just got the job done but time was good and the form looks okay. This is a thin city race, so I’m happy to be with the one who has upside.
4 In This Life (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Lindsey Smith trained mare who has had two runs back from a break. First up she was enormous from the back behind Quest To Venus before being a total forgive next time behind Witness In Court. Three weeks between runs and back to 1400m looks ideal. Just needs clear air.
7 Nashville Cat (Bet Now: $7.50) was a severe drifter in betting when racing over the 1000m here a fortnight back and the punters got it right as she struggled with the pace and couldn’t come on at all behind the very impressive Floyd. Back up to 1400m and back in depth are two ticks and Pike remains on.
Race 5. (17:55) Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (1MW) 1400m
9 Kia Ora Star (Bet Now: $6.50) gets the nod for me here. Michael Lane trained four year old who was confidently backed when debuting over 1200m here three weeks back and while he took his time, you had to be impressed by his final 75m when he chased hard and wore down Scuffy, who has come out and won since, so the form reads well. He has enormous upside and this looks a suitable race.
5 Iron Boss (Bet Now: $9.50) gave them a galloping less two back at Kalgoorlie before racing at this track/distance a fortnight back where he had the charmed run behind and loomed large to win but just couldn’t finish it off when a narrow third to Tycoon Target. Maps well once again and should take some beating.
3 Prize Catch (Bet Now: $17.00) is a talented four year old for the Lindsey Smith team who is three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m here where he got back off the pace and couldn’t really come on behind Rotana Beach. Firm track and a genuinely run 1400m looks an ideal recipe for him to bounce back.
Race 6. (18:30) Penfolds Handicap (72+) 1600m
2 Ripper Rio (Bet Now: $7.50) on top in a race I don’t have much confidence in. This Team Williams trained gelding ran in the Coolgardie Cup at Kalgoorlie last time out and was just even I thought without setting the world on fire behind Bollywood Blitz. He does tend to be an Ascot horse given his record here, but this is a race with not much depth, and he does get the claim.
1 Properantes (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Colin Webster trained gelding who also comes through the Coolgardie Cup and his run was a total forgive also. He just got a mile back in the run and really had no chance the way the race was run and the way the track played. Did a good job to get as close as he did. Big drop in grade and the claim for Witten is a big tick.
7 Chasing Chaos (Bet Now: $7.00) was specked at longer odds when racing at this track/distance a fortnight back and the long shot move almost came off but he couldn’t withstand the finishing burst of the in form Ragnar’s Saga. Looks to map super again from the inside gate, he’s hard fit and in super form.
Race 7. (19:05) Heineken 3 Handicap (72+) 1000m
I reckon there is a great each way play here in the shape of 11 Pop Hero (Bet Now: $9.00). Hasn’t raced for four weeks since failing over the 1200m here in what looked a strong race and that’s how it panned out with two subsequent winners. He saves his best for 1000m, he likes being fresh, draws to stalk a mad speed and have last say.
6 Lockroy (Bet Now: $2.80) is a six year old gelding in ripping form at the moment for the Chris Gangemi team. This horse ran over the track/distance a fortnight back and just looked like he wanted further. Couldn’t wind up quick enough but his effort was sound in defeat behind Gigante. He either leads or gets the box seat. Either way, a key threat.
1 Zuccheros (Bet Now: $11.00) is another that may go around at silly odds. He is a quality animal for the Durrant team that is first up off a 154 day spell. His best form does come over 1200m and further, but he can sprint well fresh and I didn’t mind the way he looked in a recent trial. He’ll be charging late.
Race 8. (19:42) Mumm Champagne Handicap (66+) 1300m
7 Atalanta Blue (Bet Now: $4.40) for me in the get out. This horse is on the seven day back up after racing over the 1200m here last Saturday where he toughed it out strongly and was game in defeat when third to Young Gina. Think he is looking for a touch further so I like the step up to 1300m and he strikes a very winnable race.
5 Final Salute (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Not A Single Doubt gelding first up for the Durrant team. This bloke went down the Derby path in the Autumn path and ran quite well, including a win in the Roberts, but didn’t see out the 2400m on the Derby. Loved what I saw in a trial last Monday and he appears forward enough to run a ripper.
1 Settler’s Creek (Bet Now: $26.00) is the interesting one here. On form, he’s the best one in the race by a mile but he has done bugger all in two runs back, the latest run being five weeks ago. Has since trialled to tune up and he went okay without being great. Just taking him on trust. The claim does help.
