An excellent card of racing has been assembled to be run and won at Randwick this Saturday, where the feature race is the $150,000 Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out four metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:40) : Schweppes Quality 1000m:
Back Me: 5 Shacked Up (Best Odds: $3.60) is resuming here for Gerald Ryan after two runs in the Winter, resulting in a dominant debut win at Hawkesbury followed by a fourth at Rosehill behind subsequent Group l winner Japonisme. Recent Rosehill trial was outstanding, on a heavy track. She is bred to swim, and is yet to be tested on firm ground, so if we get a good track here, she could be an unknown, but the talent is there.
Big Danger: 2 Top Score (Best Odds: $2.50) is a talented type that resumes for John Sargent. He trialled really well on a couple of occasions after his debut win at Warwick Farm in October, but he was freshened up and looked sharp in a January 12 trial win here. Bred to handle give in the track and the jockey was in ripping form last night at Canterbury.
Roughie: Gerald Ryan has 3 Deploy (Best Odds: $3.60) set to resume here also. This well bred son of Fastnet Rock had two runs in the Winter, firstly behind Themis and then behind Sooboog where he was beaten very narrowly. He also won a recent Rosehill trial, and was nominated for the Inglis Dash at Flemington last weekend, so the stable obviously rates him highly.
Race Two (13:20) : TAB More Than Just Winning Plate 1000m:
Back Me: 4 Scarlet Rain (Best Odds: $2.50) debuted at Rosehill three weeks back and showed good speed to lead all the way and win impressively. She was touted as a possible Magic Millions contender but the stable have elected to save her for the Slipper. Plenty to like about what she’s done on race day and at the trials, and with the race day form outside her being a tad scratchy, I’ll lean with her.
Big Danger: 7 Twist Tops (Best Odds: $5.50) resumes here for Kris Lees after two runs in the Spring, starting off with a fourth in the Gimcrack (1000m) behind Calliope before not handling the Moonee Valley track behind Dalradian. Looked sharp in winning a recent Wyong trial where she ran solid time. She can definitely measure up here.
Roughie: The wet track makes me look at the breeding, but nothing is really there sire wise, so I’ll go on trials, and 10 Happy Feet (Best Odds: $21.00) has trialled well on soft ground. Stable knows what to do with youngsters and this daughter of Sepoy looks talented.
Race Three (13:55) : Tattersalls Club Carrington Stakes 1400m:
Back Me: 6 Zin Zan Eddie (Best Odds: $4.40) was well backed late when racing racing over 1550m at Canterbury a fortnight back when he ran third to Marenostro, who ran well last weekend to frank the form. I thought the run from Zin Zan Eddie was plain, but the form has stacked up and I think the slow tempo was against him. Back to 1400m on a bigger track should be ideal.
Big Danger: With the two runs under the belt, 7 Voilier (Best Odds: $3.20) should go close. He ran over 1100m at Canterbury a fortnight back and stuck to the task quite gamely when running third to Esgrimidor, beaten under a length in a pleasing effort. Despite being a three year old taking on the older horses, he does look well placed given he is a Stakes performer and he should be cherry ripe now third up from a break.
Roughie: 4 Hidden Warrior (Best Odds: $7.00) closed off nicely at good odds in the Takeover Target (1200m) when fourth to Howmuchdoyouloveme, beaten 1.6L. He does have some upside left I think, and he does have a good record at 1400m even though he is regarded as a sprinter. Wouldn’t shock me at all if he got the job done here at massive odds.
Race Four (14:30) : Cellarbrations Handicap (86) 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Wild ‘N’ Famous (Best Odds: $2.40) resumes here for Team Snowden after a solid yet frustrating Winter/Spring prep, which yielded three placings and two fifths from five outings. Recent Randwick trial behind Shamfrancisco was very good. He has a good overall record, but the slight negative is that his first up doesn’t read great, but on the flip side, his last first up run resulted in a second to Inz’n’out.
Big Danger: 5 Bold Circle (Best Odds: $3.40) ran here on Boxing Day over 1000m and worked home alright late behind Rule The River, who ran well in Stakes company. The Bernadini’s don’t mind some give in the track, draws a good gate and the jockey rode an early double last night at Canterbury so he is in form.
Roughie: 4 Off The Rails (Best Odds: $7.00) is a Bjorn Baker trained galloper that resumes here after a somewhat disappointing Winter prep. His best form is over further, but he has had a couple of solid trials leading in and the stable is one of the in form yards in Sydney at the moment, so keep an eye on market moves.
Race Five (15:05) : TAB Highway Handicap (Class 2) 1200m:
Back Me: 6 Atom Eve (Best Odds: $2.15) on top for me here in a tricky edition of the Highway. This Norm Gardner trained three year old filly is unbeaten in two outings, the latest coming on her home track at Canberra where she just blitzed her rivals. Hardest test to date here, and it won’t be easy given she is a three year old giving weight to some handy types here, but she should acquit herself nicely.
Big Danger: Big watch on Albury visitor 12 Lord Von Costa (Best Odds: $5.50), who was backed as if unbeatable when resuming at Benalla but had to settle for a second to Bold Runner, who ran well at Sandown recently. Lord Von Costa then went to Wagga and broke his maiden quite impressively, and the time wasn’t far off the open class horses on the same program. Massive rise in grade, but he’ll eat up 1200m and will love the big surroundings of Randwick.
Roughie: 2 Championmet (Best Odds: $41.00) resumes here for Jeremy Sylvester after a solid Winter/Spring prep, which resulted in a win and a couple of placings. His best form is over further, but interesting to note that he resumes in a city race, so keep tabs on market moves.
Race Six (15:45) : More Than Ready @ Vinery Handicap (78) 1600m:
Back Me: The bigger track should really suit the Chris Waller trained 8 Pico Turquino (Best Odds: $5.50), who just didn’t appear comfortable at all between runners around the tight Canterbury circuit a fortnight back when a close up sixth to Mana. The Randwick mile is perfect for her, and out of the Chris Waller runners engaged here, she has the most upside. Also a big watch on Mydream, who is backing up again and is now in mares grade.
Big Danger: 7 Lucy’s Look (Best Odds: $4.80) ran over 1550m at Canterbury last Wednesday and closed off nicely late in the piece when fourth to stablemate Spiritos. Looks ready to tackle the mile now, and while she hasn’t won for some time, she probably gets her chance here IMO.
Roughie: The knockout horse is 4 Mydream (Best Odds: $9.00). I’ve been on her back every start this time in, and while she hasn’t won, she has run very well on each occasion, including last Saturday against the boys over this track/distance. Back to mares level, draws well, handles a wet track and should be around the mark somewhere.
Race Seven (16:25) : Tab.com.au Handicap (83) 1600m:
Back Me: 4 Archean (Best Odds: $5.00) resumed over this track/distance on New Years Day and stuck on very well when second to Kanji. He is heading towards the Sydney Cup, so if he is going to be a Group l horse, you’d expect him to go very close here, and he handles a wet track.
Big Danger: 3 Cauthen’s Power (Best Odds: $4.00) was ridden a touch closer to the tempo than normal last time out at Canterbury due to the small field and tried hard, but couldn’t quite reel in stablemate Marenostro, who ran well again last week to frank the form. McDonald is back on and he rides the horse well. He won’t be getting my money, but he is a definite winning chance.
Roughie: 1 Herne’s Oak (Best Odds: $8.00) resumed over 1400m at Rosehill three weeks back and stuck on alright behind Great Esteem in what has been a good form race and will be further stronger IMO due to Start Wondering. Added fitness and extra furlong will suit and he is a winner at Randwick.
Race Eight (17:05) : McGrath Estate Agents Handicap (78) 1000m:
Back Me: 10 Rose Of Man (Best Odds: $5.00) contested a pretty thin edition of the Highway at Canterbury a fortnight but was afforded a lovely steer from Brodie Loy to get the job done impressively. Much harder here, but she is only carrying 52kg, draws a good gate and is a better horse on top of the ground, so she ticks plenty of boxes for me.
Big Danger: 4 Raido (Best Odds: $3.40) also ran at that Canterbury meeting over 1100m and was well backed to win the race and the support was nearly justified, but Esgrimidor got in the way of that move coming off. Should be ready now third up from a break and he gets the services of Hugh Bowman. The only negative, and it’s a big negative, is rising 6.5kg.
Roughie: 7 No Bad Blood (Best Odds: $21.00) trialled very well prior to resuming at Canterbury where he had to lump 60.5kg on speed and tired late when finishing last to a potential Stakes galloper in Bullrush. He doesn’t mind a wet track, senior rider on, draws well, fitter…definite knockout chance.
Race Nine (17:45) : Hyland Race Colours Handicap (78) 2000m:
Back Me: 3 Mr Steal (Best Odds: $3.00) was ridden aggressively by James Innes Jnr last start at Canterbury where he rolled along in front and kept finding under hard riding to win impressively. He loves give in the track, Innes remains on and he looks the leader.
Big Danger: 9 King’s Officer (Best Odds: $6.50) was backed at odds to win that race mentioned above and was given every chance in the run by Jess Taylor, but had to settle for third, beaten a length. He has a pretty good record at Randwick and Brodie Loy takes over.
Roughie: 8 Thurston (Best Odds: $21.00) was ridden upside down when attempting to lead all the way here on New Years Day over the mile when finishing down the track behind Kanji. His three runs prior, when ridden off the speed, were excellent, and he has performed well up to 2200m.
BEST BET: Race Six Number 8 Pico Turquino
