Nine races will be run and won at Randwick this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:25) Living Turf Handicap 1200m
I’ll go with 8 Rio De Janeiro (Bet Now: $14.00). Team Snowden train this colt, who debuted with a solid win at Goulburn before taking on the older horses at Hawkesbury where he looked disinterested for the most part but once he put his mind to it, he savaged the line late, clocking some good late splits behind Military Academy. 1200m looks ideal and is in the right yard to handle the step up.
1 Dio D’Oro (Bet Now: $4.20) is a nice looking colt for Gary Portelli who resumed on the bog here a fortnight back and slogged it out best to score. I don’t think the field had great depth to it but he got the job done nicely. Think this race is much harder, but he has the hard 1200m run under the belt now which should leave him in good stead.
7 Knight Arrow (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Joe Pride trained son of Smart Missile and I thought he did quite a good job to win on debut over the 1100m at Gosford. Did the work on speed, kicked hard and was out on his feet late but dug in well enough to win. He lacks the class of some of these, but that win was tough to the eye.
Race 2. (12:00) Dad & Daves Turf Handicap (80) 1200m
Keen here on 8 Bella Success (Bet Now: $8.00) for Chris Waller. This girl resumed last Monday at Kensington where she got a fair way back off the speed but Collett gave her a lovely ride to save ground and launch late, just missing out on picking up Alassio. Think 1400m will be her go but I think she’s good enough to beat these with the upside she’s got left.
The blinkers on really did the track with 1 Easy Eddie (Bet Now: $3.90) last time out at Kensington. McEvoy had him parked off the speed and he looked to be bolting before the button was pushed and he exploded for a dominant win. He’s racing so well at the moment and I think back up to 1200m will be no issue.
9 You Make Me Smile (Bet Now: $19.00) is a son of So You Think for the Jason Coyle who looks a really good type. He resumed over 1100m here a fortnight back where he got a mile out his ground and never really looked likely but his last 150m was pretty good I thought behind Brook Magic. 1400m is his go for sure, but if they go silly in front, he’ll be quite strong late.
Race 3. (12:35) Evergreen Turf Handicap (82) 2400m
I’ll go with 1 Solo Mission (Bet Now: $3.50) but gee this is a bludger of a race. When he won at his first Australian start over 1500m at Rosehill, I thought he could develop into a solid stayer, but he hasn’t done much since, though he got close to Hallelujah Boy over 2000m here last time. 2400m looks ideal and wet track no issue.
5 Only Tiger (Bet Now: $5.50) is racing in career best form at the moment for the John Sargent team. Ran over 2100m last Wednesday at Warwick Farm and gee he toughed it out strongly to win. Tim Clark got rolling on him on the turn and he looked in a bit of trouble but he found plenty late and won. 2400m no issue and the depth of this race is pretty much midweek quality.
8 Spooky Wooky (Bet Now: $6.00) is a High Chap gelding for Team Hawkes who probably isn’t going well enough to be a winning chance but for exotics, I could include him. He comes through the Follow Suit slog at Warwick Farm where he got back off the pace and wasn’t far off, beaten just under two lengths. Hard to trust, but up to 2400m yes and wet track no issue.
Race 4. (13:10) Southern Cross Turf Highway (Class 3) 1200m
Having a throw at the stumps via 13 Budawang (Bet Now: $19.00). I can’t remember the last time Tom Higgins sent a horse to town, but he’s got this bloke going well. Came with a barnstorming finish to win two back over 1200m at port Macquarie before coming back to 1100m and just missing out on picking up Bite The Media, who ran well at Wyong the start prior behind a good one. Wet track no issue, down the weights and in form.
8 Nicconita (Bet Now: $2.10) looks to be going well for John Bateman. 2/2 this time in, resuming with a dominant maiden win at Wagga before doing it nicely again at Goulburn. The Wagga win was over Tully Toff, who is a milk drinker, so I’d scrap that. The Goulburn race looked to have depth and she did it impressively. Think she measures up.
This is surely D-Day for 5 Go The Gantry (Bet Now: $5.00). Has had two runs now for Gayna Williams and has been solid enough each time he has stepped out, both in Highways here. But the bottom line is he has only won two races from 28 starts. Last chance for me here because overall, this isn’t a strong Highway.
Race 5. (13:45) Elite Sand & Soil Mile 1600m
He’s been costly to follow, but I think this will be the day for 4 Special Missile (Bet Now: $2.20). He has been racing quite well this time in but can’t quite crack it for a win. Well I think that will all change here. Should lead for fun, gets weight relief, McDougall rides him well, wet track, won at the track/distance…he’ll do me.
6 Karavali (Bet Now: $5.00) was so poorly weighted and graded last time out in the O’Shea at the Sunny Coast and you can understand why she did nothing behind Egg Tart given she was at level weights, whereas if it was a handicap, she would have got nearly 10kg. Randwick mile looks ideal, down in the weights, handles a wet track…just depends what petrol is left.
2 Mighty Lucky (Bet Now: $6.50) looks to be ticking over nicely for a couple of staying cups over the next month or two. He ran at Rosehill three weeks ago and wasn’t far off Sir Bacchus in a blanket go. Has a really good record at Randwick, has class and isn’t badly in at the weights after the claim for Overmeire.
Race 6. (14:25) SCG Trust Handicap (85) 1400m
6 Savvan (Bet Now: $4.40) on top. John O’Shea trains this mare, who has finished runner up in her two runs back from a break, both of which have come over 1200m here. Firstly, she closed off well against the tempo behind Savatiano before running second to the talented mare Noire. Up to 1400m third up looks ideal so happy to be with her.
4 Star Reflection (Bet Now: $7.00) is a daughter of Time Thief for Kris Lees who is racing quite well at the moment, but she just can’t crack it for a win. Loomed large to win last time out despite sitting wide no cover but was no match late for Noire. Four of her five career wins have come at 1400m, so the step up looks good.
3 Medaille (Bet Now: $7.50) is finding it hard to win for James Cummings but it’s hard to knock her at the moment, especially if we get a wet track. Sat on speed three weeks back at Rosehill and fought on really hard when a close up third to Volpe, with that form being franked via I Am Serious. Back to the 1400m at Randwick should suit.
Race 7. (15:05) Elite Haulage Handicap 1200m
1 Jungle Edge (Bet Now: $3.00) for me. He is an absolute beauty for the Mick Bell team and the stable have well and truly figured him out in that he is just purely a wet tracker as he is getting older. Landed some decent bet when winning the June Stakes here a fortnight back, dominating from the front and winning impressively despite being on the worst part of the track. Happy to be with him.
2 Shiraz (Bet Now: $4.00) had the blinkers on for the first time in the June Stakes and punters had a good crack at him at the big odds. The plunge nearly came off as he attacked the line but just missed out on picking up Jungle Edge. 1200m looks ideal for him and turning the tables is certainly on the cards if he holds his form.
6 Faraway Town (Bet Now: $6.00) is the definite knockout for mine. Matty Smith trains this mare, who was trying to squeeze into the Tatts Tiara field but due to her rating, she couldn’t gain a start. Hasn’t raced since the Sapphire during the Championships when finishing well back behind Quilista. Been kept on ice and her recent trial win here was outstanding.
Race 8. (15:45) High Quality Turf Handicap (80) 1400m
3 High Mist (Bet Now: $3.00) had done nothing for some time but he struck a wet track last time out at Kensington and the bets at longer odds were landed with a pretty tough win, aided by an absolute peach from Magorrian. I say wet track, but the times suggested the track was good. He’ll definitely get a wet track this time and he laps it up.
5 Impavido (Bet Now: $4.20) could be a sharp improver. He lumped 61.5kg when resuming at Wyong on the bog and that set up just didn’t suit him at all behind a good type in Final Frontier. Has run well second up before and his record at Randwick in stronger races reads very well. A win wouldn’t shock at all.
Look out for an improved showing from the bludger that is 6 Voilier (Bet Now: $7.50). He resumed three weeks back over 1100m at Rosehill where he was never in the hunt from the back, but in isolation, his effort and late splits were pretty good. He doesn’t mind a track with give in it and can pull out a decent run second up.
Race 9. (16:25) Turf Strain Australia Sprint (81) 1000m
Has to give weight to the older horses, but just have to be with 2 She Knows (Bet Now: $4.60).There are no signs of her training off and Danny Williams’ team has the habit of keeping these horses up for a while. Ran over 1100m here a fortnight back and I think a hard 1100m here on a wet track just told on her late when second to Brook Magic. Back to 1000m, happy to be with her.
1 Bandipur (Bet Now: $2.50) is very likeable here for James Cummings. First up since a pretty solid Winter/Spring prep, which ended on Cup Day when running second to Prezado. Has looked great in a couple of trials and is 2/2 on soft ground, each time impressive. Short enough, but concede he is a key threat.
Interesting to see what 5 Grand Condor (Bet Now: $21.00) does here. Steve Hodge trains this greybeard at Newcastle. Hasn’t raced since Anzac Day at this track/distance when on speed and tiring late behind Ozark. Been given a good freshen up and the Taree trial win looked very good to the eye. At his best, he’s capable of going close.
