Racing returns to the Parks track at Morphettville this Saturday where eight races have been set down. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out two metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:26) Over The Rainbow Hurdle 3200m
7 Sir Lopez (Bet Now: $2.30) is the interesting one. Patrick Payne trains this bloke, who ran in a maiden hurdle at Sale last time out and he absolutely bolted in under Pateman, jumping beautifully throughout and when it came to crunch time, he put them away quite comfortably. He is a pure wet tracker though, and if we get a dry track here, he won’t be as effective.
8 Tunes (Bet Now: $9.50) is an iron horse for Grant Young who seems to have been in work since Moses parted the sea. He was heavily backed in that Murray Bridge hurdle mentioned above but jumped poorly to run fourth. He then ran last Saturday on the flat and was okay when fourth to Super Haze. He’s one tough bugger…just needs to jump better.
2 Urban Explorer (Bet Now: $20.00) is a greybeard for Eric Musgrove who can be hit and miss but his run last Monday at Murray Bridge was enormous. He spotted them roughly 15-20 lengths at one stage yet kept coming and in the end only just missed out on picking up Mystic Prince. Good record here and now has found form.
Race 2. (13:01) M&J Chickens Handicap 1250m
I’m going to side with the upside, which lies with 4 Poised To Strike (Bet Now: $2.60). Debuted at this track/distance two weeks ago where he sat off the pace and presented to be a threat but Unfair Dismissal had the hard race fitness and proved too tough. He’s got the run under the belt now and I think he can sit closer in the run.
1 Unfair Dismissal (Bet Now: $2.70) is the hard fit/in form youngster for Tony McEvoy. Off the map when racing over this track/distance a fortnight back and despite doing a bit wrong in the run, his class got him home. How much upside he has left? I’d say no, but he’s up and running and there are no signs he’s stopping.
3 Social Spin (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Toorak Toff gelding for Darren Weir who was unwanted in betting when resuming during the Swan Hill Carnival but he lapped up the heavy track and dug in to get the job done. Debut run was a howler but the form out of that has been pretty good. Has the Weir polish so have to respect.
Race 3. (13:36) Medallion Homes Maiden Plate 1000m
8 Factual (Bet Now: $1.80) is the filly who will likely set the speed. She set a cracking pace on debut here a fortnight back where she copped some heat on speed but she fought them off and was hailed as the winner before Duchess Grace burst through to nab them late. Should improve with the run under the belt and rates highly.
2 Blazing Bullet (Bet Now: $5.00) is a David Jolly trained son of Bullet Train who had trialled up well prior to resuming over the 1050m at Balaklava, where he was good but no match for Masipag, who ran okay on Wednesday despite not winning. Froggy takes the steer and his aggressive style could well suit this gelding.
5 Sun Wukong (Bet Now: $15.00) is an interesting runner. Son of Sebring that resumes for the John Croucher team after a two run Autumn prep where he was okay without shooting the lights out. Been given a good break and I thought his Gawler trial behind the above average Triple Deez was more than encouraging.
Race 4. (14:16) See The Magic Of Matt Tarrant Handicap (86) 1250m
I’m going with 5 Aspect (Bet Now: $5.50), who I believe was a late nom for this race and probably understandably given the original noms were pretty thin. He bounced back to his best form when bolting up over 1300m here a fortnight back when leading all the way and he was never getting the way he was going in front. If he can translate that here against the older horses, he’ll take some beating.
3 Exalted Adam (Bet Now: $3.10) is a hard horse to trust. He has the awful habit of flopping out of the gates and giving away a start immediately, so the start will be crucial. It cost him last time out at this track/distance when a narrow second to Chamois Road. If he jumps and is with them, he’ll be the one to hold out.
7 Stragun (Bet Now: $5.50) will love the step up to the 1250m. He was 1200-1000 last time out and that was the thing that beat him in the end. Just got a mile out of his ground and lost momentum on the turn when building. He’s racing so well at the moment but just can’t crack it for a win. Still, a must for exotics.
Race 5. (14:56) Dominant Handicap (86) 1000m
3 Invisible Al (Bet Now: $5.00) looks a great bet here provided we have a dry track and touch wood, we should get it here. Resumed on a bog at Ballarat and as we know, he is hopeless when he gets his toe in, so for mine it was a total forgive behind Royalic. Hopefully gets firmer footing here and he’s a two time second up winner. Keen.
10 White Kaps (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Gordon Richards trained three year old, who has only won the three of 16 career outings, but he’s going well enough to be quite competitive here. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago where he just did a bit too much work on speed and felt the pinch late when fourth to Thompson’s Reward. That form looks good enough to give him a chance here.
9 Invisible Girl (Bet Now: $8.50) is the interesting runner. If she brought her A game, she’d go close to winning, but gee she has been very disappointing over the past couple of months. She ran over 1000m on the course proper a fortnight back where she got well back in the run and closed off okay without threatening behind Barood. Runs well on the Parks track….last chance.
Race 6. (15:36) Gusto's 40th Birthday Handicap (75) 1250m
2 Embecee Lil (Bet Now: $3.70) looks one of the better bets on the card. Quality mare for Ryan Balfour who resumed over 1300m here a fortnight back where she just got run off her legs but her finale was very good behind Hussy’s Glow. Back to 1250m is the concern, but I think she has the class to beat these.
6 Autumn Street (Bet Now: $9.50) is a daughter of Street Sense that resumes for Chris Bieg. This girl hasn’t raced since early March when racing like a tired horse and finishing down the track behind Iconoclasm, who of course went on an unbelievable run in Melbourne. Resumes with no trials but has a very good fresh record.
12 Too Tuff Tara (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Rebel Raider filly for the Macdonald/Gluyas who takes on the older horses but we know that the runners from this stable can bob up when you least expect. Comes through the Hussy’s Glow race here two weeks ago where she sat midfield and stuck on okay without threatening. Prefer her up in trip, but if they go hard, she’ll be strong late.
Race 7. (16:16) UBET Handicap (86) 1550m
If he can put it together, I think 7 Morvada (Bet Now: $5.50) wins this race. Peter Jolly trains this four year old, who can do plenty wrong, and that is what he did last Monday at Murray Bridge, but he proved far too good for his rivals and won impressively. He’s hit and miss, but off that last run, he’s certainly got to be respected.
Gee this is the sort of race 11 Sohool (Bet Now: $5.50) could improve big time in. Done nothing in two runs back from a break for Darren Weir but they have come in much stronger races than this. He has run well in Adelaide before and his third up record, despite no wins, does read very well. Just depends which version of Sohool turns up.
8 Little Akie (Bet Now: $11.00) resumed in the Morvada race at Murray Bridge last Monday. He just got too far back in the run on a day where being up near the speed was ideal. so he did a good job to run second. Has run well here before, good second up record and does appear to have plenty of upside. Definite threat.
Race 8. (16:55) Schweppes Handicap (70) 1400m
I think this is D-Day for 9 Via Balciano (Bet Now: $2.80). Promised so much in his first prep and looked as if he’d measure up in town in Melbourne. Hasn’t quite lived up to that promise this time in but there were signs he’s turning the corner last time when pipped late by Going Gaga. Got the run 1400m run under the belt now, so for mine, no excuses.
8 Lord Smedley (Bet Now: $5.00) is a beauty for the Patrick Payne team. He is one tough bugger and just doesn’t know how to run a bad race. That was the case again over 1400m here a fortnight back when not giving up the chase of picking up the heavily backed Pale Ale. Just needs a bit of luck in running to go close.
12 Cool Fonzy (Bet Now: $18.00) looks the knockout. Kylie Huxtable trains this gelding, who was off the map late last Monday at Murray Bridge where he settled off the speed before Cahill presented him to win on the turn, but that track was quite testing and he just couldn’t finish it off. Third up now, he should just about be ready.
