A bumper ten race card has been set down for Launceston on Wednesday for Launceston Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Launceston Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Launceston Cup
Race 1. (13:05) Concept Logistics Mdn 1200m
7 Dramazing (Bet Now: $5.00) gets the nod in what looks a strong maiden to kick off Cup Day. Barry Campbell trains with Daniel Ganderton to steer. First up after a two run prep in the Autumn to start her career, both runs being on the Synthetic at Devonport where she was runner up each time. Has trialled up quite well leading in and with luck from the tricky gate, she’ll take beating.
8 Shammgod (Bet Now: $8.50) has had a few chances to break the maiden tag but is clearly knocking on the door for Scott Brunton. Ran over 1200m at Hobart last time out where she got a mile out of her ground but loved the way she closed off late when a narrow third. Draws to sit much closer in the run and gets a significant jockey upgrade.
3 Vivre Is The Word (Bet Now: $15.00) can be dangerous here. He contested the same Hobart maiden as Shammgod. He too got a mile out of his ground and was never really a winning threat, but I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off. He can sit much closer from the gate and has good upside.
Race 2. (13:40) Elite Racing Solutions Mdn 1400m
11 Monte Bianco (Bet Now: $4.40) on top. Mark Ganderton trained three year old that debuted over 1200m here. She was specked at odds and she ran up to that support with an eye catching fourth from near last in the run in what was a good effort. Up to 1400m looks a big tick and she’ll be strong late.
7 Broadway Babe (Bet Now: $6.00) will be had to beat but in terms of being a betting prospect, I couldn’t touch her after her last start effort. I was really keen on her to finally break the maiden tag at Hobart but she seemingly had every chance under McDougall when a well held second. She can win, clearly, but I couldn’t back her with confidence to do it.
12 Saxon Mist (Bet Now: $10.00) looks to have ability. Tanya Hanson trained filly that debuted at this track/distance and she wasn’t too bad from off the speed, finding the line okay late in the piece when fourth. Should get a lovely run in transit from the gate and for mine, can only run well.
Race 3. (14:14) Shedcorptas Hcp (c1) 1400m
1 Bell Ringer Boy (Bet Now: $7.00) broke the maiden last time in impressive fashion and I think he can win again. The maiden win came at this track/distance where he had a suck run behind the speed before being produced with clear air and he let down powerfully late to draw clear and win well. This isn’t a strong Class One and from gate one, he’ll take beating.
8 Ninth Angel (Bet Now: $18.00) is a lightly raced five year old mare for Tegan Keys that also comes here as a last start maiden winner, her victory coming over 1400m at Hobart where she was well tried late to beat Broadway Babe and she duly bolted up. Off that, she commands respect.
9 Diamond Bay (Bet Now: $26.00) will put himself on speed and run an honest race. He did that over this trip at Hobart last time and battled on okay when fifth to True Scotsman, beaten just over three lengths. He was a few weeks between runs, so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
Race 4. (14:49) Transmo Tasmania (bm66) 2100m
Usually this can be a race for a local to use as a platform for the Cups next year. The most likely horse to do that is 5 The Executive (Bet Now: $5.50). He put together a couple of strong wins before racing at Hobart where he was part of a slog up the straight and just missed out on the win in a tight finish. He’s the good recent form and will see out the 2100m strongly.
4 Costero (Bet Now: $8.50) has found winning form…can he go on with it now? He was kept safe in betting at odds in the Hobart race mentioned above and in a driving go, he was able to come out on top. Bless him because I was on his back. The set up here isn’t as good, but he’s a last start winner.
8 Banca Syd (Bet Now: $8.00) can be an improver. I thought he was working up to something positive but in the Hobart race mentioned above, they rode him warm instead of cold and it just clearly backfired. I think he’s far more effective with a conservative steer. He can bounce back if that eventuates.
Race 5. (15:24) Pfd Food Services 3yo Classic 1200m
No prizes for finding 1 Turk Warrior (Bet Now: $1.22). They gave him a chance to be a potential Derby horse but after failing to see out the mile in the Guineas, he was freshened up. Came back to 1100m at Hobart and made an absolute mess of them. He’s a quality sprinter and even with the weight, he should win comfortably.
7 Emily (Bet Now: $5.50) ran second to Turk Warrior at Hobart and likely runs second again. She tried her guts out behind the quality three year old but was just no match for him, tasting defeat for the first time in her career. Impressive win at this track/distance the start prior so she has talent. Not enough to beat Turk Warrior.
2 Outbound (Bet Now: $21.00) is the one that could challenge Emily for the second spot. He got a fair way out of his ground in the same race and was never a factor, but his finale was quite good I thought. He can settle much closer in the run from the gate and up to 1200m looks a big tick.
Race 6. (15:59) Kevin Sharkie Royal Rambo Qlty 1200m
I found this to be a nightmare race to sort out with confidence. I’ll side with 3 Amaword (Bet Now: $12.00). He comes back to 1200m after contesting the Tasmanian Stakes over the mile last time out when wide and doing work, and really, just failing to see the mile out at that level. Like him with fresh legs back to 1200m and maps to get the right run.
1 Gee Gee Secondover (Bet Now: $6.50) looks the likely leader and has class. Ran over this track/distance on Australia Day in the Ladbrokes Stakes where he led, had control, and gave a solid kick, but couldn’t quite finish it off when beaten narrowly by Liffeybeau. He’ll lead and look the winner for a fair chunk.
Good test here for 10 Hellova Night (Bet Now: $4.60) but he has earned a crack after a dominant on speed win at Hobart last time. He made a mess of them from on speed, albeit in a race far weaker than this, but he gets a pull in the weights, is a horse in form and has a good racing style.
Race 7. (16:34) Vamos Stks 1400m
Anything over black figures looks overs for 8 Ayahuasca (Bet Now: $2.90). This looks such good placement by the Price/Kent camp. Resumed over 1400m at Caulfield on Australia Day where she was hailed as the winner but Yonce had other ideas and kicked back to win. That mare bolted up on Saturday at Flemington and I feel is Stakes quality, so that form is A1, she’s got upside…only thing stopping her being a genuine $1.60-$1.70 chance is remaining at 1400m.
2 Yes Baby Yes (Bet Now: $8.50) is a Team Corstens trained mare that comes here with fresh legs, having not raced since mid December at Flemington when on speed and feeling the pinch late behind Second Slip. This is an obvious plan/target race for this mare and she can produce a sustained gallop from on speed.
4 Take The Sit (Bet Now: $12.00) looks the pick of the locals. She resumed in the Bow Mistress where she was back and wide, never really a factor, but I thought she stuck to the task pretty well in defeat behind Zoushine. She has a fab track/distance record and from the gate can sit much closer in the run.
Race 8. (17:09) Launceston Cup 2400m
I don’t think an extra 2kg will stop 1 Ho Ho Khan (Bet Now: $2.90). It was such an arrogant Hobart Cup triumph. Sat back before peeling wide and the change up speed was sharp when Tahlia Hope pushed the button. All things being equal, he should be winning once again in what looks a pretty thin race.
2 In A Twinkling (Bet Now: $4.20) should run an honest race for Lindsey Smith, but I am surprised he is so close to Ho Ho Khan in the market. That horse drew right away from In A Twinkling and was dominant, so hard to see him turning the tables, even with a weight pull. But he should run a positive race all the same.
5 Glass Warrior (Bet Now: $14.00) is a first four threat. She made up good ground in the Hobart Cup but like the rest of the beaten brigade, she was comfortably held by Ho Ho Khan. Hard to make a case for her to turn the tables, but I think she’s a good place chance getting to Launceston.
Race 9. (17:45) Mowbray Stks 1600m
If the Thomas Lyons run hasn’t busted him, then I am keen on 3 Justacanta (Bet Now: $3.10). Pires gave him zero in the Thomas Lyons. Wide no cover throughout chasing a strong speed and the horse did a remarkable job to look the winner, only to be bloused late. The one to beat if that hasn’t busted him.
2 Mandela Effect (Bet Now: $4.40) will be around the mark. He charged from the back in the Thomas Lyons where he was hailed as the winner, only to just miss out on picking up More Than Exceed. Fab track/distance record and hopefully can use the inside gate to advantage.
11 And Beyond (Bet Now: $10.00) has the talent to win this. Just his barrier manners are becoming an issue so I do like the barrier blanket going on. He got a mile out of his ground in the Thomas Lyons but was a real eye catcher late behind More Than Exceed. Dangerous if he’s within range.
Race 10. (18:20) City Of Launceston (bm62) 1200m
Confident the meeting can end with a good thing in the shape of 1 Fivefingerdiscount (Bet Now: $2.70). First run for Joel Flannery came over this trip at Hobart where he looked a good thing on paper given his solid Victorian form and he confirmed that with a rather arrogant win. No reason why he can’t win again.
2 Debrief (Bet Now: $10.00) has a tricky draw to overcome but he’s going well for Scott Brunton. Really finished off his race with purpose to win at Hobart last time under Brandon Louis, who remains on. If he can get luck from the tricky gate, I think he’ll be around the mark again.
5 Gee Gees Teardrop (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Team Wells trained gelding that resumes. He had a busy Winter prep, mostly on the Synthetic at Devonport, and was far from disgraced for the most part. Not a noted first up performer, but looks to have trialled up nicely and has good early speed.
