Eagle Farm is where Brisbane metro racing will take place this Saturday, with nine races set down. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:37) Priceline Pharmacy Ascot Handicap 1300m
6 Sizzling Babe (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Neville Saunders trained filly who produced a brilliant finale to win two back at Doomben before racing there again in the Raay Of Dreams where she just got a fraction too far back but worked the line well. Think Eagle Farm is going to really suit this filly and if it comes to last one standing, she’ll be in the mix for sure and is a knockout chance.
2 Raay Of Dreams (Bet Now: $1.75) won the race mentioned above and I thought the ride from Jeff Lloyd was the difference. He rode it an absolute treat, sitting on speed before pouncing and holding a safe margin to the line. Just has to translate that to Eagle Farm but with the Vandyke runner out, the race is there for the taking and loses nothing with Gibbons taking over.
3 Lesharc (Bet Now: $3.60) is a son of Rubick for the Matty Dunn stable. He looked to trial well prior to resuming a fortnight back at Doomben where he was near the speed all the way and battled away really well in defeat when third to impressive Raay Of Dreams. Think he’ll take good improvement and bigger track/extra trip look big ticks for a stable that’s in form at the moment.
Race 2. (14:12) Priceline Pharmacy Ascot Plate (Class 2) 1300m
12 Belle Roc (Bet Now: $5.50) gets another chance for me. Didn’t mind her at odds when she resumed over 1200m here three weeks ago. When they’re running home in a tick over 33 for the final 600m, she was no hope given she was back in the run. Her last 75-100m was the best part of her race. Looks to be more speed in front this time around so happy to give her another look.
9 Sornja is a hard horse to catch for the O’Dea camp but I think she strikes a very winnable race here. Has had two runs back from a break, the latest coming over the 1200m here where she got a mile out of her ground but worked home with real purpose late to run a close up fifth to Skate To Paris, beaten two lengths. Extra 100m and the drop in depth are two big ticks for her.
17 Mystic Eyes (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Chris Meagher trained mare who defied a notable betting drift to lead all the way over 1200m at Ipswich last time. She opened around $4 and got to as high as $15 but led all the way under Tegan Harrison and though the margin was narrow, there was merit to the win. Third up now, so she should be at peak fitness and will be out of trouble on speed.
Race 3. (14:47) Midori Handicap 1400m
Happy to stick with the Chris Waller trained 8 Veladero (Bet Now: $6.50). Was on him when he resumed over 1200m here three weeks ago and I thought his effort was very good. Sat back in an on pace dominated affair and was never really in the hunt but closed off well and clocked some of the better late splits of the race when third to Divine Dice. Up to 1400m a big tick, fitter and can sit closer in the run if need be.
He’s going to win a race soon will 5 Oink (Bet Now: $4.60). Won’t be with my money on but he’s always a threat because he’s around the mark…just can’t crack it for a win. When he got the split at Doomben a fortnight ago he looked as if he’d dash and win, but just didn’t finish it off when third to Sword Of Justice. That was his first run in five weeks, so there should be room for improvement.
4 Jaminzah (Bet Now: $14.00) is a son of Master Of Design for the Chris Waller stable that is resuming. This bloke had a two run prep in the Summer and was okay without setting the world on fire. Been given a good break and had a quiet trial at Doomben behind Tabbing. Think whatever he does here he will improve on but if they go silly in front, he’ll be strong at the end I’m sure.
Race 4. (15:22) Priceline Pharmacy Ascot Plate (Class 4) 2200m
I think if she’s handled the trip to Queensland and everything is in order, 13 Teodora (Bet Now: $3.30) should be winning. Formerly with Darren Weir, this mare is now with Tony Gollan after just starting to find some good form after a couple of terrible preps. Last run came on January 23 when beaten narrowly by Box On Collins. Big track/long straight looks perfect and she’s just better than these at her best.
I think a big improver here is 5 Cormac (Bet Now: $10.00) for Chris Waller. He comes to Queensland after starting his prep in Sydney after a couple of encouraging runs over unsuitable trips, the latest over 1550m at Canterbury when okay late behind Chalk. Up to 2200m will really suit this galloper…might need one more run, but he was a dual city winner in Sydney last prep.
6 Red Phantom (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Tony Gollan trained stayer who is racing in good form at the moment but can’t quite crack it for a win. He ran over 2200m at Doomben a fortnight back when given a peach ride by Du Plessis and he loomed large to win, hitting the front and looking home but couldn’t quite finish it off and was nabbed near the peg by Miss Sara. That was his first look at 2200m this time in so he should be better for that here.
Race 5. (15:58) Paddyfest 2019 Handicap (0MW) 1000m
Was on 7 Capital Connection (Bet Now: $2.35) first up and happy to butter up again. He resumed over 1000m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago and tried hard to reel them in from off the pace but just didn’t have the zip in the legs to round up the in form Meet Mr Taylor. Good second up record and the depth isn’t as strong, so happy to be with him against this bunch.
Interesting runner here is the speed demon 4 Redex (Bet Now: $31.00), resuming for Michael Nolan. One thing we know about him is that he’s got plenty of early toe and should be leading this field. He had a pretty good campaign in the Spring, winning a few races over the short course thanks to some good placement from the stable. 1000m first up on the big track is interesting, but he’ll give them something to chase.
12 Masterari (Bet Now: $5.50) is third up here for Steve O’Dea so he should just about be ready to show his best. He ran over this track/distance three weeks ago when on speed and he fought on well in defeat I thought when second to boom sprinter Meet Mr Taylor. He is a third up winner in the past and the depth here isn’t as strong as what he faced last time IMO.
Race 6. (16:38) Priceline Pharmacy Ascot Handicap 1600m
Happy to be with the Matty Dunn trained 15 Rocknavar (Bet Now: $13.00). This filly ran in a 1700m maiden at Grafton a couple of weeks back where she looked a good thing on paper and despite traffic difficulties early on in the straight, she was always in control and she was very strong late in winning. Jumping from a maiden to a 3YO handicap in town isn’t easy, but looks to have enormous upside.
9 Tatcee (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Chris Waller trained filly who has been up a little while but continues to race well. Comes back to her own age after taking on the older horses at Doomben a fortnight back where she tried hard but was no match for the impressive finale of Reckless Choice. Bit of depth to this field, but she’s hard fit/in form and the 1600m will be no issue for her.
10 Yamazaki (Bet Now: $21.00) has the talent to win this but mentally, I just don’t think he’s all there upstairs. Ran at Ipswich last time where he didn’t appear to get around Ipswich at all and was most disappointing behind Trainspotting. Bigger track and senior jock on are big ticks for this three year old and in the past he has shown city class ability, so I wouldn’t rule him out of exotics.
Race 7. (17:18) TAB Plate (Class 6) 1600m
12 Reckless Choice (Bet Now: $3.70) does look one of the better bets on the card. Steve O’Dea trains this gelding, who ran over the mile at Doomben a fortnight ago where he was given a lovely ride by Boris Thornton just off the speed before shoving into clear and he put the race to bed in a couple of strides. Think Eagle Farm will suit him even better, he’s fitter…I think only bad luck will beat him.
6 Le Juge (Bet Now: $4.80) is a Chris Waller trained galloper who is racing in really good form at the moment. He has won his past two, the latest coming over the mile at Doomben a fortnight back when just proving too good for Mishani Bullitt. Just needs to translate that to Eagle Farm but the win prior at the Sunny Coast suggests a big track/long straight won’t be an issue.
11 Realing…(Bet Now: $12.00) I’d finally just gotten over the last start nightmare but it’s brought back up. He should have won here three weeks back. Just had a little trouble getting clear air at the right and in the end it was just the bob of the head that separated him and Bluebrook. When he finds form, he generally holds it, so I think he’ll be dangerous if he gets conditions to suit.
Race 8. (18:00) Midori Plate (Class 6) 1200m
10 Manaya (Bet Now: $5.00) is a talented daughter of Hinchinbrook resuming for Michael Costa. She lost her ways at one stage and looked as if the breeding barn was calling but towards the end of last prep, she really put it together, winning a couple of races in good style. Looked to trial up really well at Doomben a few weeks back and can sprint well fresh, so it’ll be interesting to see what the market does.
I’ll take a chance on 8 Scallopini (Bet Now: $8.50), who resumes for Steve O’Dea. The stable have a very good record when they produce one first up and this horse is above average. Ended his Winter/Spring prep with a dominant win over 1350m at Doomben in a race which has produced a few winners. Has trialled really well on a couple of occasions and he can sprint very well fresh. Winnable race also.
13 River Racer…(Bet Now: $7.00) she continually starts short and continually gets beat so personally, I couldn’t go near her at anything short, but her 3YO form would see her spank these. Just depends how she’s recovered from the resumption here three weeks where she was three/four wide no cover for the trip in a total forgive. Her best race pattern is to get back and launch late.
Race 9. (18:40) Www.brc.com.au Handicap (75) 1400m
15 Francisca (Bet Now: $3.00) is a Steve O’Dea trained mare who was relatively unwanted in betting when resuming over 1200m here three weeks back but she was a real eye catcher, eventually getting clear and savaging the line late to just miss out on the win when a narrow third to Skate To Paris. Fab second up record, down in the weights, draws well, up to 1400m…plenty of ticks.
Happy to give another chance to 8 Pressway (Bet Now: $8.50) for Steve O’Dea. Was on him when he resumed over 1200m here several weeks ago but the market late just said he might need the run and that’s how it panned out. Loomed to win but he just ran out of puff late. Drew wide last time and was never in the hunt. Think up to 1400m will really suit this galloper and draws much better this time around.
2 Coral Bay (Bet Now: $7.50) is a quality galloper for the Stuart Kendrick who has a booming finish on him and can certainly win this if the breaks go his way. Hasn’t raced since Australia Day at the Sunny Coast when a closing third to the in form Cabeirian. Trialled well last week at the Sunny Coast to the eye, Brad Stewart on, soft gate, can see him going close for sure.
