Eight races will be run and won at Belmont this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:18) Heineken Plate 1300m
Pretty keen on 3 Mystery Miss (Bet Now: $1.60) in the opener. Williams/Pike/Peters combo here with this filly, who resumed over 1000m at Northam last Thursday and I loved the way she sprinted when she got the cutaway and ran near sub 33 for her final 600m without being fully let down by Pike. Up to 1300m no issue and she looks to have a touch of brilliance.
1 Free Mover (Bet Now: $2.35) is a Simon Miller trained gelding who has had two career outings, both coming here over 1200m. Threw it away on debut when wanting to lay in prior to putting it all together next time and bolting up. Looks to get a good time of things on speed and at start three, he should know what the caper is about.
2 Stella Anne (Bet Now: $21.00) is a daughter of Galah for Chris Stelmach who surprised many with her win here last Wednesday over 1200m. She was first the first horse off the bit and seemingly was going nowhere, but she kept finding under Staples and on the line was finishing best. Extra 100m should be no harm and she should get a suck run near the speed.
Race 2. (15:50) Penfolds Handicap (72+) 1600m
3 Settlers Creek (Bet Now: $3.90) looks to be flying for Colin Webster and I think he can get the job done. On the quick back up after racing over 1400m here last Saturday where he got back to near last in the run before presenting wider on the turn and charging home, but couldn’t quite get past the in form Great Again. Can sit closer from the inside draw and I think he’s a good gamble.
6 Rockon Tommy (Bet Now: $1.90) is a query at the trip but I think he gets his chance to run it out against this lot. Ran over 1400m here a fortnight ago and tried to loom large to win, and he did for a few strides, but was no match late for Electric Light. Doesn’t look to be a strong tempo so he gets his chance to see the trip out.
5 Reef Keeper (Bet Now: $20.00) is the mare likely to set the speed. Ran over 1400m here a couple of Wednesdays back where she was wide no cover for the trip but despite that stuck on pretty well in defeat I thought behind Supreme Force. Gets really good weight relief, senior jock on and should get a soft lead.
Race 3. (16:38) Crown Sports Bar Maiden 1200m
Looks a race in two but siding with 9 Duck Duck Goose (Bet Now: $2.00). Lindsey Smith trains this mare, who trialled up well prior to debuting over 1000m here a fortnight back and I liked the way she found the line late behind a potential blacktype horse in Battle Storm. Extra furlong looks perfect and gets gate one.
3 Argoon (Bet Now: $3.80) looks the other key winning chance. Ran in a 1300m maiden at Northam last Thursday where he got well back off the speed but worked home well out wide late when third to Blue Tracer. Would love him at 1400-1600, so back to 1200m is the niggle, but have to respect the Pike factor.
1 Little Red Roman (Bet Now: $11.00) was three weeks between runs when contesting the Battle Storm maiden mentioned above. He attempted to lead all the way and gave a mini kick but had no answer late. Suited up in trip and looks to get the lead, plus with the claim for Kirby, I’m sure he’ll give you a great sight.
Race 4. (17:18) Mrs Mac's Handicap (1MW) 1600m
Just has to run out the mile and 5 Sophie’s Song (Bet Now: $2.35) should be winning. Got the maiden out of the way last Thursday over 1300m at Northam where Pike got a pretty soft lead on the filly and once he clicked her up, it was pretty much game over. 33.5 last 600m for her there, and that sort of speed is non existent with these.
1 Pagan Image (Bet Now: $2.00) is the best horse in the race on current form but for mine the 1600m has to be a query. Loomed very large to win over 1400m here a fortnight ago and he looked home but True Defender just proved too good on the line for a half length win. Query at the mile, but does have class.
4 Krakkas (Bet Now: $35.00) is a Russell Stewart trained gelding who comes through a 1400m maiden last Wednesday where he got well back off the speed and despite laying in, he worked to the line quite strongly to run fourth. Can sit much closer in the run from the barrier and is a knockout chance at odds because the mile will be no issue.
Race 5. (17:53) Amelia Park Handicap (1MW) 1000m
7 Battle Storm (Bet Now: $1.40) faces some proven city types here, but he looks a blacktype class gelding. Debuted over this track/distance in a maiden a fortnight ago where he looked a good thing on paper off the back of a sharp trial win and he ran right up to that with a dominant win. Produced a lethal turn of foot to win and I’m hoping that can come to the fore here.
6 Time To Trade (Bet Now: $5.00) does look the only serious threat. The Sharon Miller trained gelding is flying at the moment, winning his past two in pretty impressive fashion, both coming over 1100m at Northam. Admittedly, not beating much but he’s running times and does have the hard fitness under the belt. If Battle Storm is off his game, this is the pony to bet on.
8 Iz That Right (Bet Now: $15.00) is a So Secret mare who comes back to 1000m after racing over 1200m here last Wednesday. She had a suck run nearer the inside before getting the cutaway and she dashed but couldn’t quite see out the trip behind Multiverse. I think a fast run 1000m will suit her and can fill a drum with luck.
Race 6. (18:25) 60th Wedding Anniversary Rob & Valerie Dick Handicap (72+) 1200m
5 Electric Light (Bet Now: $2.05) looks the one to beat. Adam Durrant has this mare going really well at the moment. Ran over 1400m here a fortnight ago where Pike had her once again in the sweet spot just off the speed. As per, she hit a little flat spot but once Pike got fair dinkum, she knuckled down and surged hard late to win. Fast run 1200m no issue and she’ll be strong at the end.
I certainly wouldn’t begrudge a win to 7 Big Caroline (Bet Now: $7.00). The Giadresco boys have this mare in near career best form but she can’t quite crack it for a win. Got a long way back over this track/distance a fortnight ago but as she does, she savages the line and in the end the bob of the head separated her and Crystal Spirit. If she doesn’t spot them a huge start, she’ll take beating.
1 Zuccheros (Bet Now: $101.00) could be one to include in wider exotics. He resumed in the Crystal Spirit race mentioned above where he was last throughout and was never really in the hunt. He’d go close if he brought his best form and does draw a better gate, so he can get a suck run nearer the inside. Perhaps a first four threat.
Race 7. (19:00) Furphy Handicap (1MW) 1400m
Just how good is 3 King Blitz? (Bet Now: $1.90) I think we’ll get a good guide here. The locals are talking him up as the next big thing to come from WA off the back of visually some very impressive wins. Admittedly the times have been nothing flash and has beaten nothing compared to what he faces here, but the form out of the race win has produced a stack of subsequent winners. I’ll jump on the bandwagon.
2 Little Fish…(Bet Now: $10.00) how good is he? Beware the unbeaten horse. This Peter Fernie trained gelding is 5/5 to start his career, four of which have come over the 1200m at Kalgoorlie and he’s simply been too good for them. Gets his toughest test in town but we saw recently with stablemate Pym’s Royale, they can handle it successfully.
The rise to 1400m will certainly suit 7 Yindi (Bet Now: $6.00). On face value, I thought he was disappointing when racing over 1200m here last Saturday when midfield behind Mantime. But looking at it again, the run was solid given it was his first run in seven weeks and was at 1200m, a distance short of his best. Sevens later at 1400m looks an ideal recipe.
Race 8. (19:35) Tabtouch - Better Your Bet Handicap (66+) 1300m
Can 7 Bold Success (Bet Now: $4.00) put two on the board on the bounce? He took a lifetime to get the second win to his name but it finally came at this track/distance a fortnight back with a Pike special getting him home. I don’t think he’s the best horse in the race, but he does draw to get the sweetest of runs behind likely leader Count Tomoz Off.
I think 13 Patrocity (Bet Now: $4.40) is the best horse in the race but it all depends what Turner does from the sticky gate. This horse hasn’t raced since bolting up over the mile when ridden with a touch of arrogance by Pike late. Back to 1300m the niggle, but is well in at the weights…want to see what the market does.
5 Count Tomoz Off (Bet Now: $7.00) looks the leader and I’m sure he’ll give a sight on speed. Ran over 1400m here a fortnight ago and gave a good kick after getting a cheap furlong down the side but the 1400m saw him out when fourth to Electric Light. Back 100m and back on firmer footing, he’ll be stronger this time around.
