Eight races have been set down for Morphettville this Saturday where it is Grand National Day, bearing in mind the two jumps races will be run on the Parks track. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out thirteen metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out nine metres from the Winning Post-2000m; Out eight metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:26) Grand National Steeple 3500m
3 Speedy Jax (Bet Now: $3.50) is in a purple patch for Patrick Payne and should take some beating here. His last two starts have resulted in jumps wins at Casterton, including a win over the above average Dormello Mo last time when near the speed throughout and proving too good late, with the weight pull being a factor to the finish. Has upside and stable has had a fab jumps season.
Interesting that 2 Lucques (Bet Now: $2.40) reverts to the bigger jumps. Eric Musgrove has done a fab job with this bloke over the jumps this season, winning a couple of Hurdle races, placing in the Galleywood as well. Had a Steeple trial win prior to a hit out at Sandown last Saturday on the flat to tune up for this. Pateman booked is a good lead and is a key threat.
8 Pentomatic (Bet Now: $23.00) is a bit hit and miss for Eric Musgrove but if he brought his best, he’d be in the mix. He ran in a Steeple last time out at Casterton where he put in one of his bad runs, with poor jumping and seemingly struggling throughout behind He’s A Genius. Did win impressive during the Warrnambool Carnival so have to give him an outside winning chance.
Race 2. (13:01) Grand National Hurdle 3500m
2 Euroman (Bet Now: $2.50) has been trained specifically as a jumper this time in for the Maher/Eustace stable and the rewards have been good in three runs, winning two with a Sandown placing in between. Last start saw him get the job done at Casterton, with his flat speed coming to the fore late as he was too good for Super Haze. Leading chance here for sure.
4 Double Bluff (Bet Now: $3.00) has teased to be a very good jumper for a while but for the most pat hasn’t quite lived up to the early expectations for Aaron Purcell, but that changed last time out at Sandown when proving much too good for his rivals despite being poor over the last couple of jumps. Will need to jump cleanly to give himself a serious chance of winning.
5 Andrea Mantegna (Bet Now: $4.20) has been pretty good since turning to the jumping caper for the Archie Alexander stable. His flat speed saw him win his maiden hurdle two back at Hamilton before racing over 3200m here in a hurdle race where he jumped poorly late and cost himself the win IMO when third to Beyond Thankful. With cleaner jumping, he can win for sure.
Race 3. (13:41) Eddy Nunn 60th Handicap 1050m
4 Secret Sauce (Bet Now: $4.80) is a daughter of Brazen Beau on debut for Danny O’Brien. Didn’t really set the world on fire in a Geelong trial earlier this year, but was tipped out soon afetr and had a recent jumpout at Flemington, when leading all the way and looking to go really nicely in okay time relative to the morning. In a tricky race, I think she’s one of a number of ways to go.
Phillip Stokes trains 5 That Girl (Bet Now: $2.50), a Sizzling filly having start one. She trialled around three weeks back when sitting near the speed and when given a click up by Gary Lo, I liked the way she responded and she went on to win the trial, beating Tubby Two Tracks, who bolted up on the Parks track on debut to frank the form. Has to be regarded as a leading chance. Not a long shot but race is thin depth wise.
1 Garner (Bet Now: $3.40) is a really well named Gordon Richards trained youngster on debut. Being by Barbados, easy to see why he has his name and he looks to have some ability. Trialled last week over 1000m here and looked to go about his business quite nicely behind Westport. There does look to be a little bit of depth to this field but I think he can run well.
Race 4. (14:21) AAMI Handicap (86) 1200m
One last chance for 5 Tequila Time (Bet Now: $3.10). On face value, I thought he was disappointing when racing over 1000m on the Parks track a fortnight ago but I just think he did a little bit too much work to hold up from the inside and was left a sitting shot for a backmarker, with Cashed obliging. I’d love to see him ridden with cover, hopefully a bunny to chase, and be stronger at the end.
1 Go The Journey (Bet Now: $3.10) is an absolute beauty for the Jolly camp and he’s in good form two. Four weeks between runs since sitting on speed on the Parks track and proving too tough for his rivals in winning, one of those rivals being Crown Fontein, who has gone with it since, winning the Golden Topaz at Swan Hill. He’ll land on speed and give his all like he usually does.
2 Lope De Capio (Bet Now: $14.00) is an improver second up. The Francis/Kent stable trains this sprinter, who resumed in the Cashed race from two weeks ago on the Parks track where he settled off the speed and tried hard, but for the most part, I thought he had his chance when running fourth. Good record on the course proper and with the run under the belt, he’s a knockout chance.
Race 5. (15:01) Adelaide Image Printing Handicap (70) 1200m
Up to 1200m will really suit the Gordon Richards trained 1 Bold Star (Bet Now: $4.60). Was really keen on him over 1050m here last Saturday and he just found them too sharp but loved the way he attacked the line late, looking like a horse who will appreciate more ground, which he gets, and he hasn’t really put in a bad race for a while, being a real model of consistency.
2 Cosmic Alert (Bet Now: $4.50) is a talented filly for the Will Clarken stable that returns off a freshen up. Was heading towards the SA Oaks path but after failing in the 1800m lead up, that plan was aborted. Has residual fitness on her side and looked quite sharp in a trial placing a couple of weeks back. Has class/quality on her side and despite 1200m being short of her best, she’ll take some beating.
10 Jaamint (Bet Now: $61.00) is a stablemate of Bold Star that resumed in the race he contested last Saturday. She was disappointing in resuming but interesting to note that the ear muffs will only be on pre race, so perhaps that gear change back fired last week. At her best, she can fill a minor hole and did trial really well prior to the resumption. Giving her another chance.
Race 6. (15:41) Red, Rock & Ribs Book Now Handicap (70) 1050m
Hoping there is upside left in the tank of the Will Clarken trained 2 Mr Hamilton (Bet Now: $2.90). Was on him first up at Balaklava and I thought he did a really good job in winning given he had to chase a pretty solid speed and was there to be run down but fought hard late and was too good. Has a strong overall record and stable is really flying at the moment, especially with these Sean Buckley runners.
10 Exalted Maxine (Bet Now: $12.00) is a real speed demon for Grant Young who will make sure this is a proper 1050m contest. Ran over this track/distance last Saturday when scooting along in front and gave a mini kick but on the bog track just felt the pinch when a tiring fifth. Takes on the older horses, but firmer footing will help, she’ll jump, run and give herself every chance.
7 Vicki’s Boy (Bet Now: $18.00) is a son of Racer’s Edge for Ken Sweeney that resumes. This bloke is usually around the mark and does find a winnable race to resume in. Had two runs in the Summer and placed each time, the second and last start run resulting in a second to Exalted Maxine after giving away a decent head start. Suspect he’ll drift back in the run and finish off late.
Race 7. (16:20) West Adelaide Football Club Handicap (86) 2000m
1 All Too Huiying (Bet Now: $2.45) is creeping up in the weights, but is just racing so well at the moment for Phillip Stokes. Admittedly hasn’t beaten much his past two, both over the 1950m on the Parks track, but it’s the manner in which he has won. Knuckled down strongly to surge and win two back then the confidence was up and he put them away last time with a fair amount of ease. Harder here but likeable all the same.
2 Brown Ben (Bet Now: $6.00) isn’t far off a win I don’t think. Tony McEvoy trains this galloper, who was a few weeks between runs when contesting the Swan Hill Cup, getting back in the run and finishing off quite well behind stablemate Tan Tat Trusting. Suited up to 2000m and this is a significant drop in depth for this bloke, who hasn’t won in just under two years, but finds a very winnable race.
Firmer track and weight relief should help the Patrick Payne trained 10 Bea Tempted (Bet Now: $6.00). She had to lump 57kg on a bog track at Sandown last time where she just got too far back in the run and was never a threat but liked the way she finished off very late. Firmer footing will help her cause and on her day, as we’ve seen this prep, she has a booming finale when in the mood.
Race 8. (17:00) TAB Handicap (75) 1200m
5 France’s Boy (Bet Now: $15.00) is racing in a real purple patch at the moment for the John Hickmott stable. Ran over 1400m at Balaklava last time when getting the nice sit just off the speed before Fawke got the dream inside run and it was a matter of counting to ten, pushing the button and winning, which he duly did. I reckon 1400m sees him right out so like him back to 1200m.
10 Hello Gorgeous (Bet Now: $5.50) is going well for Gary Searle. Ran over 1300m on the Parks track two weeks ago when given a nice ride by Holder and she was there to win, but Lady Bethany had the hard run under the belt and was too strong in the end, but this mare was far from disgraced in second. I think 1300m is a bridge too far, so back to 1200m, she appeals.
4 Lockdown Jack (Bet Now: $10.00) is a son of Churchill Downs resuming for Sue Jaensch. The stable did a remarkable job with him last time in because once upon a time, he was a milk drinker, but he turned the corner last time in, winning a couple of races before placing at Naracoorte. Good fresh record and though resuming without a trial, first up in town tells me he’s ready to go.
