Night racing wraps up at Moonee Valley this season wraps up this Friday evening with a brilliant card of racing, headlined by the Group l William Reid Stakes (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Want to give 4 Yulong January (Bet Now: $6.00 PROMO ODDS) another chance. The Maher/Eustace stable trains this three year old, who hasn’t really set the world on fire in two runs back from a break, the latest in the Canberra Guineas when a disappointing sixth to Final Award. Think he’ll lead for fun here from gate one and rail true, dry track, I think on speed will be no disadvantage.

Danger

8 Anjana (Bet Now: $2.80 PROMO ODDS) is a Mick Price trained filly who had trialled up well prior to resuming down the straight at Flemington where she was given a 12/10 steer from Olly and the filly dashed clear late for a most impressive win. That was her first run in 19 weeks, so you’d like to think there is room for improvement and she’s a winner at Moonee Valley, plus Olly sticks.

Long Shot

1 Marcel From Madrid (Bet Now: $8.00 PROMO ODDS) is an Ellerton/Zahra trained three year old who resumed down the Flemington straight behind Anjana where he was looking to finish off strongly late but ran out of room the final 100m and was a little unlucky not to finish closer behind the Mick Price filly. He’s a big striding horse, so Moonee Valley is a concern, but does have class/quality.

8 Cheer Leader (Bet Now: $4.50 PROMO ODDS) is a Team Snowden trained filly who has placed in two career outings from as many starts, the latest being down the Flemington straight when wandering about under pressure and losing second on protest behind Mockery. Draws gate one, so she’ll have the rail to follow and straighten her up, hopefully, in what does look a competitive race.

Danger

6 Andrassy Avenue (Bet Now: $4.40 PROMO ODDS) put pay to them impressively two back at the Valley which prompted her to get a start in the Blue Diamond where she was well specked at odds but didn’t quite measure up behind Lyre. Looks suited back to this level and she can bounce back for sure. Just depends what’s left in the tank because she’s had a couple of hard recent runs.

Long Shot

The time was nothing flash, but gee 1 Mayan (Bet Now: $5.50 PROMO ODDS) was impressive on debut at Morphettville on the Parks track. Punters knew, because he was heavily backed late and under Stubby, he powered clear late and spanked them. Stable is having a pretty decent run with their youngsters at the moment and overall, this isn’t the strongest two year old race going around.

5 Good Therapy (Bet Now: $4.20 PROMO ODDS) on top. Clinton McDonald trains this gelding, who was just over three weeks between runs when racing on Yarra Valley Cup Day on Sunday and he ran really well in defeat when beaten narrowly Camilla Lucinda. Gets gate one, Olly on and hopefully gets the cold sit on Time Ford, gets out and finishes best. If only racing was as simple as that.

Danger

11 Testifier (Bet Now: $2.40 PROMO ODDS) is a Star Witness gelding for Team Hawkes who is 2/2 to start his career, the last win being at this track/distance against his own age when on speed and fighting hard to get the job done. Lobs on speed from the good draw I suspect, hopefully perhaps with something to chase, and stable is having an okay run at the moment. Key threat.

Long Shot

1 Tycoon Dancer (Bet Now: $18.00 PROMO ODDS) is a son of Written Tycoon for the Hayes/Dabernig stable who is first up. He hasn’t raced since November 14 at Bendigo when on speed and battling away well but just felt the pinch and in the end, did race like a tired horse. He’s been given a good break, usually sprints well fresh and his recent jumpouts have been more than encouraging.

Race 4. (20:00) Simpson Construction Handicap (70) 2040m

Really keen to see what 4 Ryan’s Fender (Bet Now: $3.70 PROMO ODDS) does. Matt Cumani trains this bloke, who resumed on Valentines Day at Warrnambool and gee he was impressive, putting them away like a good horse in winning. Been freshened up and loved the way he closed off in a recent Camperdown jumpout. Break between runs, based on the jumpout, no issue for mine. The one to beat with upside.

Danger

5 English Gambler (Bet Now: $7.50 PROMO ODDS) is just about at D-Day for mine. He has had two runs in Australia, the first up run being under Weir at Flemington where there were excuses. He then went to Sandown in an on paced affair and couldn’t dash well enough behind Simply Invincible, who won at Flemington. 2000m is his right trip so one more chance before he gets binned.

Long Shot

7 Ayers Rock (Bet Now: $21.00 PROMO ODDS) could give some cheek on speed here. He ran over 2000m at Cranbourne under the lights last time when on speed and giving a decent enough kick under Matty Allen but just tired late. Has run well at the Valley before, lands in front I suspect and Pat Moloney is pretty good when steering front runners. Doubt he wins, but should run a bold race.

Race 5. (20:30) 55 Second Challenge Final 955m

Really keen to see what 6 Oberland (Bet Now: $13.00) does here. Former Darren Weir galloper that is now with Jarrod McLean and he has shown good sprinting ability throughout his career. 955m not really his pet trip but gee he looked sharp in a recent Camperdown jumpout when closing off under little pressure. He’ll get back and launch late off a likely brutal early speed.

Danger

1 Gun Case (Bet Now: $11.00) is a former Darren Weir sprinter having his first run for the Jarrod McLean stable. He hasn’t raced since May 5 last year when racing down the Flemington straight and being far from disgraced behind Malibu Style, who has gone on to win a couple of races, including one at Stakes level. Recent Camperdown jumpout looked more than encouraging to the eye and has a great record at the Valley.

Long Shot

9 Caribbean Pearl (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Mark Young trained mare who has been around the mark in these 955m races this season, albeit in much easier grade than this. Ran over the trip on Feb 22 and closed off alright I thought when fourth to McGarett, who has run well since. This girl has since had a jumpout and she went about her business nicely. She’ll get back and be strong at the end.

Race 6. (21:00) Alexandra Stakes 1600m

Back Me

Keen to see if/how 6 Mirette (Bet Now: $7.00) measures up. Archie Alexander trains this filly, who ran on Echuca Cup Day against the older horses and she was arrogant in getting the job done and the good thing is that she did it while on speed and without cover given she can pull hard at times. Likely drifts back from the gate and come with a finale, hopefully a brilliant one.

Danger

3 Angelic Ruler (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Team Pearce trained filly from WA who has been up a fair while and not sure what upside is left, but she’s holding her form nicely. Was a little unlucky last time in the Kewney when held up, but IMO, she was out in time to beat Spanish Whisper but couldn’t get past her and was held on the line and through it. I think she’s very effective when ridden cold and having last say, as we saw in WA when Tayla Stone was steering.

Long Shot

9 Kevikki (Bet Now: $15.00) rises a fair bit in depth/grade but she’s heading in the right direction. Won over 1400m at Echuca last time when given a pretty soft time of it in front under Linda Meech and from the 600m onwards it was a pretty painless watch and she bolted in. Gate one is a big tick for her and with Jamie Kah aboard, does no work and could be dangerous late.

Race 7. (21:30) William Reid Stakes 1200m

Back Me

10 Sunlight (Bet Now: $1.80) a clear threat me. Said after the Newmarket win that she has serious claims to being labelled a champion and this race has a champion honour roll. The Newmarket win was outstanding, doing it from the front, giving nothing a look in under Vorster and she found plenty when challenged, like a champion horse. Should land near the speed and take a power of beating.

Danger

7 Spright (Bet Now: $7.00) looks a massive chance, especially if they go hard in front. Was really keen on her in the Wenona Girl at Randwick last time but the big weight was carried in a brutally run race and that probably just beat her in the end when second to Winter Bride. Has run well at the Valley before and the patient hands of Jason Collett looks as if it will really suit this mare.

Long Shot

It would take something remarkable for 8 Ellicazoom (Bet Now: $31.00) to win, but for multiples, I’d include her for sure. She comes through the Oakleigh Plate where she was never really a winning factor given where she was in the run but she worked home strongly to finish just under three lengths from Booker. Does no work from gate one, and will need luck, but could easily run first four.

Race 8. (22:00) Sunline Stakes 1600m

Imagine what you could be buying instead.

Back Me

6 Naantali (Bet Now: $5.50) on top for me, just. The Maher/Eustace stable trains this mare, who comes through the Matron at Flemington where she seemingly had every chance of beating Spanish Reef but the Kenny Keys mare packed plenty when challenged and held off Naantali. Naantali does like racing at the Valley and for mine, I’d like to see her ridden on speed and rolling, like Spanish Reef.

Danger

4 Spanish Reef (Bet Now: $1.65) is going really well for Ken Keys and is a clear threat. Thought she was poorly ridden two back in the Mannerism when ridden with cover behind Jamaican Rain. That rubbish was out the window at Flemington in the Matron, putting herself on speed and she dug in strongly when challenged by Naantali to win. Has more upside I think and can win again for sure.

Long Shot

10 La Tigeresa (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Jason Warren trained mare that is absolutely flying I think. She comes through the Tressady at Flemington where she got back to near last in a slowly run affair and really had no hope, but worked home strongly to run fourth to Oregon’s Day. Not sure she can win from last this time around, so hopefully can sit a pair or two closer in the run.
