Nine races will be run and won at Ascot this Saturday, where the feature race is the Detonator Stakes (1800m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (16:02) Glenroy Chaff Maiden 1200m
Bludger of a maiden to start the meeting. On top is 2 Son Of The Sun (Bet Now: $8.00), a Brett Pope trained gelding that resumes. This guy ran some decent races last prep in metro maidens without winning over a bit further than this. Two trials leading in have been quite good to the eye, draws well and for the sake of a tip, he’ll do me.
1 Bruce Almighty (Bet Now: $2.70) has had several chances to break the maiden tag. Don’t think a maiden win is far off though. Looked like he would get it two weeks ago at Pinjarra but was pipped near the peg by Magic Empire, another who took forever to win a race, so that form perhaps a touch suspect, but he’s generally around the mark.
4 Knot Known (Bet Now: $11.00) is a son of So Secret for Vaughn Sigley that resumes. This guy hasn’t raced since November 13 at Bunbury when on speed and seemingly got a good run in transit, but didn’t finish it off at all and was disappointing. Resumes without a trial, but when it comes to this stable, I’d be watching betting.
Race 2. (16:42) Salinger Plate 1100m
1 Dom To Shoot (Bet Now: $7.00) does look quite a progressive juvenile for Sean Casey that has a win next to his name. That came last start over 1100m here when off the speed before edging wider and surging hard the last few strides to get up and score a good win. He’ll be strong at the end of this I’m sure. Just a matter of what sort of start he gives away.
3 Mindarie (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Paul Jordan trained filly that resumes on a Karrakatta path. This girl had two starts to kick off her career during the Carnival, winning impressively on debut before a close up third and was tipped out soon after. Resumes without a trial, but has early toe, should lead and prove hard to run down.
8 Zac Luvs To Fly (Bet Now: $19.00) is a son of Galah for Chris Stelmach that is on debut. This gelding has had two trials in readiness for start one, the latest coming last Monday at Lark Hil when winning narrowly yet ran good time for the morning. Has an inside gate to take advantage of. Not sure he wins, but including in multiples.
Race 3. (17:22) Westspeed Platinum (rs0mw) 1600m
1 Kelly’s Gem (Bet Now: $3.90) is the pony to beat I feel. Adam Durrant trains this mare, who does have a bad racing pattern, but I think she can still overcome that and take this out. Ran over 1800m here last time out when back in the run and finishing off well but didn’t savage the line when second. That’s why I like her back to 1600m.
8 Sakarya (Bet Now: $2.40) is a pretty consistent mare for David Harrison who has to be rated highly here. This mare ran over 1400m at Pinjarra two weeks ago when on speed in a slowly run affair so she had her chance but was still sound in defeat when second to Playing Marika. Did win at 1600m last prep and gets to that trip for the first time this prep.
5 Salvara (Bet Now: $7.50) comes here with Esperance form next to her name, but she’s won three on the bounce there and given the depth here, overall, isn’t strong, I think she’s worth a look. Puts herself on speed and gives her all, which has seen her win past three in good style. Never easy to come to town and continue winning, but has the right racing pattern.
Race 4. (17:55) Vale Lyn Lynch Handicap (72+) 2100m
With the run under the belt with upside, I’m going the way of 3 Here Comes Lenni (Bet Now: $4.50). Son of Tavistock for Justin Warwick who resumed in the Narrogin Cup and tried his guts out, but was no match late for a hard fit/in form Burning Pride, who actually gets a weight swing in her favour for beating this guy, but I think there’s more upside with Here Comes Lenni.
With that weight pull despite winning, have to respect 1 Burning Pride (Bet Now: $2.45). She’s in a real purple patch at the moment for Team Williams, culminating with that Narrogin Cup triumph under a confident steer from Pike. Loses Pike, but does get 3kg off after the claim for Chris Graham, so she’s a leading chance.
4 Crystal Valley (Bet Now: $8.00) is three weeks between runs for Colin Webster since racing over 1800m here where she tried hard from off the speed but couldn’t quite finish it off when second to The Big Show. Has won at this track/distance previously and the tick over trial looked more than encouraging to the eye.
Race 5. (18:30) Julie & Mike's Birthday Handicap (66+) 1000m
Will it be a case of jump and run for 9 This’ll Testya (Bet Now: $1.55) and bouncing back to winning form? She won her opening two outings and looked the next star of WA racing before throwing in the towel cheaply last time out when rising to 1200m. Fresh and back to 1000m looks perfect. Gate one potentially a tricky one for her, but with a clean jump, she leads comfortably and is hard to beat.
8 Catherine Wheel (Bet Now: $4.40) is the key threat. Quality mare for Karen Kersley who was heavily backed when resuming here a few weeks ago due to the speed map and the fact she had a low weight. Had things to suit near the front and was far too good for her rivals, drawing clear late like a nice horse. Bit more depth here, but she’s above average and has upside one would assume.
7 Shinju (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Chris Gangemi trained gelding that had just one soft trial leading into his resumption over this track/distance several weeks ago where he had a good run in transit and loomed large to win but his condition just gave way late. He’ll come right on from that and is yet to miss a place in three second up attempts. Leading chance.
Race 6. (19:10) Vale Donald Kent Handicap (1MW) 1600m
The knock with 5 Inspirational Girl (Bet Now: $1.85) is that she may want further, but she does look to have really good progression left compared to this lot. Big win from the back at this track/distance three weeks ago, surging hard late to nab Patristic on the peg. That horse was awful last Saturday, but is probably at the end of a hard prep, so while that form is suspect, think you just have to trust your eye with this mare.
7 Abby Lane (Bet Now: $8.50) is racing as if 1600m will be okay for him. Anne King trains this guy, who has raced over 1400m at his past two, the latest coming two weeks ago at Pinjarra behind Playing Marika. Think 1600m will be okay for him. Can he beat the fav? I think not, but with luck in running, can definitely fill a top three spot.
Back to 1600m should suit 1 Scoreline (Bet Now: $26.00). He ran over 1900m last time out in the Narrogin Cup when just off the speed and tried hard, but couldn’t finish it off when midfield behind Burning Pride. That form reads well enough for this. Just a matter of whether or not he has petrol left in the tank, but has a good gate to use.
Race 7. (19:45) Detonator Stakes 1800m
I think the class of 1 Star Exhibit (Bet Now: $2.30) will get him home here despite 1800m being short of his best. He’s been an absolute marvel for Adam Durrant and had a very good Summer Carnival. He did win the Lee Steere first up and has residual fitness here given he last raced in the Perth Cup back on January 4, plus the recent trial was quite good.
You’ll know in the first 400m just how strong the winning chances of 8 Harry Thomas (Bet Now: $7.00) are. He was well fancied when racing at this track/distance three weeks ago but just went too keen in front and had nothing left for the finale when third to The Big Show. If he can relax better this time around with the weight relief, he’s hard to beat.
9 Red Army (Bet Now: $19.00) is a son of Patronize for Team Williams that resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since the Autumn Cup back in March of last year when down the track behind He’s A Parker. He’s been given a good break with three trials to prepare for his return. If he’s anywhere near right, he can win, but the market will tell you if he’s indeed forward enough or not.
Race 8. (20:20) All Flags Signs & Banners Hcp 1200m
2 Celebrity Queen (Bet Now: $2.25) looks a very exciting prospect for Team Williams and confident she can win again. Resumed at Pinjarra two weeks ago when sitting off the speed before being presented wider and finishing off strongly to score a soft win, but ran great late splits in winning, and had something in hand. If she improves off that, she wins again.
4 Eurasia (Bet Now: $13.00) has been pretty good this time in for Steve Wolfe. This three year old ran over the mile here last Wednesday when on a slow speed and those on the pace did dominate, with this guy just missing out on the win when second to Dark Mission. Quick back up and back to 1200m is a question mark, but gets gate one and Paul Harvey.
1 Specialism (Bet Now: $21.00) is a Paul Jordan trained filly that resumes, having not raced since the Summer Carnival when down the track in the Champion Fillies behind Tuscan Queen. I think sprinting is her go in life, and though she resumes without a trial, she can sprint well fresh, lands near the speed and is hard to run down.
Race 9. (20:55) Crown Sports Bar Handicap (1MW) 1200m
11 Long Beach (Bet Now: $3.40) on top for me. Team Williams trains this three year old, who resumed in a 1000m maiden here at the midweeks when a notable drifter late in betting but he really showed his class, charging clear to win well in good time with something in reserve. Jumps straight to Saturday grade but does look above average.
10 Rocky Path (Bet Now: $8.00) is a quality filly for Vaughn Sigley that is first up and I think she can resume a winner. Had a pretty busy start to her career in the Winter/Spring/Summer, which ended in the Champion Fillies when down the track behind Tuscan Queen. She looks a sprinter and though resumes without a trial, she has enough quality to beat these.
9 Bee Quick (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Dion Luciani trained mare that doesn’t have the best of racing patterns, but she’s certainly got the ability to figure in the finish. Last raced two weeks ago over this trip at Pinjarra when back near last in the run and finding the line okay late in the piece behind Solid Azza. She can be dangerous if she sits a pair or two closer in the run.
