A strong eight race card has been set down for Moonee Valley this Friday night, headlined by the Australia Stakes (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Australia Stakes 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Australia Stakes
Race 1. (18:30) Quest Moonee Valley (bm70) 2500m
I’m really keen on 4 Coin Collector (Bet Now: $3.70). To the eye, he was pretty plain at Caulfield last time but the tempo was rather strong throughout and the run prior, he won what was pretty much a barrier trial, so he was found wanting. The tempo won’t be hot this time around, can see him potentially dictating and proving too good.
1 Playoffs (Bet Now: $3.10) has been up a little while for the Maher/Eustace camp but continues to hold his form quite well. Few weeks between runs since racing at Flemington when near a genuine tempo and fighting on well behind Doroza. Query at the trip, but always respect the stable in this distance range.
Think up to 2500m suits 6 Into Rio (Bet Now: $11.00). On the quick back up after racing over 2040m here last Friday night where he was back off the speed and never really likely but made up ground and was good late. Gets to a more suitable trip and can cause problems at a price.
Race 2. (19:00) Powerflo Solutions Mdn Plate 1000m
6 Hauraki Golf (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Maher/Eustace trained colt that looks to be the one that has trialled up nicely. Well bred colt on debut and I thought his change up speed when clicked up was impressive in a recent Werribee trial. Zahra sticks and should get a lovely run from the inside draw.
4 Cadboll (Bet Now: $7.50) is a very interesting winner. Son of Under The Louvre that is on debut and he has looked the part in a couple of jumpouts, the latest seeing him quite well and going about his business nicely. Tricky race this and noteworthy that has been early support.
10 Jagar (Bet Now: $15.00) is a daughter of Zoustar on debut for the in form Ellerton/Zahra camp. Trialled up well enough last week at Werribee when under no real pressure and going to the line nicely when third to Decent Raine. Just needs to overcome a tricky draw and think she will be in the finish.
Race 3. (19:30) Ladbrokes 55 Second Chall-bm70 955m
Looks to be a stack of speed engaged here, so want to be on a closer and that closer will be 7 Magic Pippa (Bet Now: $10.00). Well supported when resuming over 1000m at Mornington where she sat off the speed before peeling wider and surging hard late to get up and win. Gets in well after the claim, sits off the pace and will be launching at these late.
If 3 Almadrava (Bet Now: $3.80) drew out, she would be the best of the night. Just not sure if gate one will be an advantage, but she’s got a great record at this track/distance and did win here last time. If she can breaks and clear air at the right time, she has the turn of foot to win this.
2 Sasayuri (Bet Now: $9.50) is a beauty and should land in a beaut spot off this good speed. On the quick back up after racing over 1200m here last Friday night where she was near the pace and fought on quite well behind the in form Sham I Am. Sits off the tempo and is a knockout hope.
Race 4. (20:00) Australia Stakes 1200m
Provided there is no mad bias towards leaders, $1.85/thereabouts looks a decent enough price for 3 Viridine (Bet Now: $1.85). He is the best sprinter in this race and is taking horses either wanting further or out of form. Should park behind the two leaders and his class getting him home.
1 Streets Of Avalon (Bet Now: $5.00) is likely using this as a trial for the Futurity/Orr but he does have class and will likely lead this field up. Has a decent enough record at the track and Zac Spain does get on well with him. If there is bias towards those on speed, he comes right into play.
5 Tavisan (Bet Now: $4.60) does save his best for the Valley and can be quite dangerous here, especially if he finds the front. Few weeks between runs since racing in the Christmas Stakes at Caulfield when near the speed, a fast speed, and tiring late behind Pandemic. He’s a definite winning chance and wouldn’t be surprised if there was market support late.
Race 5. (20:30) Happy B'day Frank & Geoff-bm64 1000m
Leaning the way of 7 Backpedal (Bet Now: $3.40), but not a great deal of confidence. Andrew Noblet trained mare that resumed over 1000m at Cranbourne where she had a suck run behind the speed and was held up for a few strides before eventually getting clear and surging late to run second. Better luck this time around and she can win. Too short though. Would want $4+.
Big watch on 11 Continuance (Bet Now: $2.90), who makes his Victorian debut for Lindsey Smith. Showed good promise in his 2YO season in WA, with some very strong form lines around him which do read well for this. Colac jumpout was encouraging and gets in well after the claim. Leading chance.
2 Moi Choux (Bet Now: $6.50) is a key threat. Richard Laming trained four year old who is a few weeks between runs since racing over 1100m at Sale where he showed good early toe to lead and gave a really strong kick, but was nabbed late by Gold Spark. Four winners have already come through that race and the race rated highly. He has the early toe and prove hard to beat.
Race 6. (21:00) M & M Martin Ralston Cup-bm64 2040m
2 Resurge (Bet Now: $6.50) is the best horse in the race, but just where he gets to in the run from a horrible draw I do not know. Ran over 2000m at Murray Bridge last start and worked home quite well when third to impressive winner Farooq. If he can get luck from the draw, he’s one of the hardest to beat.
3 The Mockingbird (Bet Now: $5.00) is racing very well at the moment for Symon Wilde and is a leading contender here. Few weeks between runs when racing over 1800m at Caulfield and finishing off with purpose late when second to Perennial. Better for that run under the belt and up to 2040m, can see her sitting back and finishing off strong.
1 Snoano (Bet Now: $10.00) is yet to win a race in Australia but the Aaron Purcell team is going quite well and this guy looks like he is knocking on the door. Ran here last Friday night and looked all over a winner but was nabbed late by Set Us Free. Gets a soft trip from the gate and will be strong at the end. Just needs to greet the judge first.
Race 7. (21:30) VOBIS Gold Carat 1200m
Gravitating towards the Spring form, which does sit with 8 Love Sensation (Bet Now: $12.00), resuming for Kevin Corstens. Didn’t quite measure up in the Guineas Prelude and then the Thousand Guineas, but was far from disgraced in races which turned out to be pretty strong form references. Loved the way she closed off in a recent Cranbourne jumpout and if she’s within range on the turn, she’s good enough to win.
5 Yulong Command (Bet Now: $4.60) is hard fit and racing well for the Freedman camp. Sat near a very solid tempo last time out at Caulfield yet kicked on strongly, only to tire the final few strides when third to Dickin Metal. Should land in a beaut spot from the gate with Jamie Kah to ride and rates highly.
One that will sit back and be strong late is 2 Agarmi Karma (Bet Now: $19.00) for the Keys stable. Let down like a nice horse to win his maiden fresh at Sale before going to the Dickin Medal race where he was back in the run and never really a winning threat, but was an eye catcher towards the end. A must include for multiples.
Race 8. (22:00) Dynamic Print Group (bm70) 1200m
There are a few ways you could go here in the get out. Think the safe option is 9 Foxy Lady (Bet Now: $3.10). She was huge fresh at Caulfield. Bungled the start and in an on pace dominated race, she had no chance of winning, but closed off with real purpose to run third. Clean jump, she looks the one to beat.
8 Vici (Bet Now: $8.50) can produce a third up bounce back. Electric finale from the back to win fresh at Bendigo before racing down the straight at Flemington where it was a sit/sprint and he just couldn’t dash from where he was behind Ididitforlove. Better suited here and Maskiell I like on.
Not sure 11 Lady Brook (Bet Now: $6.50) wins but can certainly entertain her for wider multiples. This mare comes through the same race as Foxy Lady, won by Miss Albania. She had a suck run in behind the speed and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off. Better suited here and is a knockout chance if things fall into place.
