The Group l racing might have ceased but the Spring Carnival is far from over at Randwick this Saturday where it is Tatts Club Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:30) Daily Press Kirkham Plate 1000m
7 Fiesta (Bet Now: $3.20) does look the one here. Debuted for Chris Waller in the Gimcrack and she was very unlucky not to finish closer or indeed win the race when third to Satin Slipper. Trialled last week at Warwick Farm to tune up again and she looked very good to my eye. If she gets the luck here, I think she wins.
5 Tactical Formation (Bet Now: $4.20) is a son of Mossman on debut for the Gerald Ryan team. This Sun Bloodstock colt debuts off the back of a six length trial win at Rosehill a couple of weeks back. Time was nothing flash, but he won well and did put a space on his rivals, plus we know we have to respect Gerald and his youngsters.
4 Line Up Girls (Bet Now: $11.00) is a well bred colt on debut for the Gary Moore team. He is a son of Sizzling out of the well performed mare Crimson Belle. He trialled at the official 2YO trials at Canterbury, where he won his trial narrowly in okay time but looked to go about his business quite nicely. Interesting to see what he does here.
Race 2. (13:05) 2CH Handicap (75) 1600m
6 Kaonic (Bet Now: $2.90) does have that look about him as if he is going to be a really good horse in the future so I’m keen to see what he does here because this race has been used as a lead up to bigger and better things. Okay, he didn’t beat much last time out at Canterbury, but he made a long searching run and ran down the tearaway leader. Randwick mile is perfect and he should be open to improvement.
I’m wary of 2 Regent (Bet Now: $7.00) here up to the mile. He ran over 1400m here a fortnight back and just got too far back on a day where those near the pace were advantaged when sixth to Goodfella. I think the rise to 1600m suits, he draws to sit much closer in the run and there is no doubting there is a decent engine under the hood.
10 Luvaluva (Bet Now: $7.50) is the x factor here. John Sargent has been saying since day dot this is his Oaks filly, and he did use this race as a lead up for Kirramosa before she went on to win the Wakeful/Oaks double. This girl did a decent job I thought in the Flight. She was on that brutal speed and to her credit she fended the leaders off but was swamped late. Doing this all in her first prep is my concern.
Race 3. (13:45) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1100m
7 Polskie Lady (Bet Now: $8.50) is worth a throw at the stumps for mine. He has been really good this time in for Jim Jarvis and is on the quick back up after bolting in over 800m at Coffs Harbour last Friday where he sat on speed, kicked at the top of the straight and dashed, winning comfortably. Has won at 1200m so the 1100m is no issue and she draws ideally for Hippo.
11 She Knows (Bet Now: $3.00) has been freshened up since resuming in a 1000m Highway here on September 16 where she was heavily backed and the plunge nearly came off but she just missed out on picking up the leader Larlabrook. Bolted up in her lone second up effort and stable is starting to fire in the Highway.
9 Attainment (Bet Now: $16.00) trialled well at Canberra prior to resuming in a five horse race at Nowra where the race wasn’t really run to suit him at all given he was out the back and he couldn’t dash with them when third to Free Way. Would prefer him over a bit further, but he is a proven Highway performer and he will be strong late.
Race 4. (14:20) City Tatts Club Cup 2400m
1 Destiny’s Kiss (Bet Now: $4.80) is on top. He is a swimmer and had been off the boil for a little bit but I thought his effort in the St Leger last week was very good against the bias when working home between runners to run fourth to Big Duke. That is the right form for this race, he’s a proven weight carrier and he is a swimmer.
4 Alward (Bet Now: $1.90) has really turned the corner in recent times, winning his past two, with help from some ripping rides. Won at Rosehill two back when beating Up ‘N’ Rolling at Rosehill before racing over the trip here in a field of three and Avdulla got them off the bit earlier than anticipated, just simply outstaying them to the line. See no problem with the 2400m and is on the limit.
Not sure 3 Admiral Jello (Bet Now: $3.30) has the class to beat these, but gee he is racing well for Kris Lees. Stuck to the task gamely in the Newcastle Cup before going to the Colin Stephen where he ran a close up second to Auvray. He was coming again on the line in that event, so for mine, 2400m is no issue, and he does get down in the weights, plus he trialled well last week. Not so much a long short…but he’s third pick.
Race 5. (14:55) ClubNSW Handicap (85) 1400m
9 Dagny…(Bet Now: $4.80) gee she’s a frustrating mare to follow. Some days she looks high class, other days she looks like a hack. Really liked her first up run behind Isorich before racing against that horse again and being poor on Super Saturday. Her saving graces here are that it appears to be a thin race and she does have excellent third up stats.
7 Peacock (Bet Now: $4.40) is a talented gelding for Godolphin and James Cummings but is another that is just finding it hard to win. He attempted to lead all the way over 1400m at Warwick Farm last time out and he gave a really good kick under Tim Clark but he couldn’t hold out the finishing burst of Jaminzah. That was his first run in a month so there should be upside.
1 Collateral (Bet Now: $16.00) is a six year old first up for Bjorn Baker. This bloke had a fabulous Winter prep, winning five of eight for the stable including several in town and went out on a high after winning over 2000m at Rosehill. 1400m is short of his best, but I love horses going out in a purple patch and I reckon he could add value to exotics.
Race 6. (15:30) Southern Cross Group Brian Crowley Stakes 1200m
3 Goodfella (Bet Now: $2.70) gets the nod for me. Bjorn Baker trained three year old who resumed with a last in the Heritage behind Viridine before racing over 1400m here where he was wide no cover for the trip but he kept finding under Collett and was just too tough for his rivals. Back to 1200m is the concern, but if they go hard, which I think they might, it could come down to last man standing.
6 Piracy (Bet Now: $4.80) is the interesting one. Market said he had no hope when racing at this track/distance fortnight back and he ran accordingly, sitting on speed and just fading out of the finish late behind Chalk. His best form has come on the smaller tracks, which is the negative, but he’s hard fit, and he does have that tough run against the older horses under the belt.
I think 8 Mustafa (Bet Now: $14.00) is the big watch here. Wendy Roche trained three year old on debut here. Yes, here probably because a part owner is related to Brian Crowley, but this isn’t unusual for Wendy Roche. The trials have been just fair, but when she brings a horse to a Saturday race, they often run well.
Race 7. (16:10) ICD Nivison 1200m
Despite 1600m-1200m, I think class will get 2 Dixie Blossoms (Bet Now: $8.00) home. Her win in the Angst was outstanding last time out, albeit the peach from McEvoy was a large factor. She trucked up beautifully, got outside stablemate Daysee Doom and wore her down. I think back in trip suits Daysee better, but Dixie is tougher and more brilliant.
I think 11 White Moss (Bet Now: $4.50) is the big watch here, first crack at blacktype. Grey mare for Jason Coyle who did an outstanding job to win first up at Canterbury, and ran decent time, considering she was fresh, three wide no cover, did all the work yet still drew clear. Provided that hasn’t busted her, I think she’s right up to these.
1 Heavens Above (Bet Now: $23.00) is the very interesting runner for mine. Classy mare for the Tim Martin yard who hasn’t raced since the George Main where she was off the bit a fair way out and couldn’t come on behind Winx. 1600m-1200m with no trial is something not uncommon with the stable, and she does have class on her side.
Race 8. (16:50) Procare Property Services Pty Ltd Handicap (85) 1600m
6 Impavido (Bet Now: $4.00) has had two runs back from a break now so he should be near ready to fire. Wasn’t suited fresh at Rosehill behind Sir Plush before racing at this track/distance and making ground late behind Interlocuter. Should be hard fit now and ready to go. Staying at the mile the slight worry but he has a touch of class/quality.
12 Gaughin (Bet Now: $7.00) was smashed in betting when racing over the Warwick Farm mile last Wednesday with the blinkers going on for the first time and the plonk was landed as he sat on speed and kicked hard under Jason Collett to win. Clearly a harder assignment here, but he has upside and room for improvement.
10 Wu Gok (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who resumed at the midweeks at Rosehill back on September 27 and I thought he did a good job from where he was to run a close up second to Mapmaker, who has run well in town since. Not the greatest of second up records, but he is a swimmer and this will be a tough mile, which should suit him.
Race 9. (17:30) Jem Computer Systems Handicap (88) 1200m
4 Ziggy Willie (Bet Now: $9.00) sets up to run a beauty here third up. Had not much a fortnight back here behind Isorich, getting bailed away and not really having clear when beaten under two lengths in a close finish. He is a noted mudlark, he finds D Browne, he draws a soft gate, and he should be ready to peak.
Taking the chance on 11 New Universe (Bet Now: $2.15). Really promising gelding who is first up for the Chris Waller. He kicked off his Australian career for Waller during the early part of the Winter and created quite a good impression before failing and being tipped out. There was talk of him being a Stradbroke horse so the stable must have an opinion, and his two trials have been outstanding.
5 Noble Joey (Bet Now: $8.50) is an absolute beauty that resumes for the Price team. He won a heat of the Provincial Championship before contesting the Final where he ran a gutsy fifth to Maroyre before failing at Rosehill behind Bonny O’Reilly. Resumes with no trials, but looks to lead comfortably, has the claim for Ryan and goes well fresh.
