Nine races will be run and won at Eagle Farm this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:53) TAB Handicap (85) 1200m
3 Jay Jay D’Ar (Bet Now: $2.70) looks a good bet here in the first. Chris Waller trains this mare, formerly with Patrick Payne. Had her first run for Waller at Randwick two weeks ago against the track pattern and closed off well in defeat behind Miss Invincible. Likely eases back to last from the gate, but she ran home in 33.5/thereabouts last time. That sort of finale speed is good enough for this.
4 Smug Satisfaction (Bet Now: $3.20) is rising a bit in depth but hard to ignore what she did two weeks ago at Eagle Farm. Fradd gave her a peach steer just off the speed before angling wider and it was just a matter of pushing the button, which he did and the mare bolted up. Bit more depth here, but Michael Costa looks to have this mare absolutely flying and she’ll take some beating.
1 Rosie Posie (Bet Now: $20.00) looks to be flying for Matt Kropp at the Provincials and bear in mind she’s a proven city performer from the latter stages of the Winter Carnival when winning on Ipswich Cup Day. Brilliant finale saw her win at Kilcoy two back before going to Dalby where she beat all bar Real Ego, who has since run well in town, so the form doesn’t read too bad.
Race 2. (12:28) Cascade Handicap (75) 2200m
Leaning the way of 5 Ocean Addict (Bet Now: $1.95). She is three weeks between runs since racing over 2400m here where she did a bit of work in the run to land near the speed and though headed halfway down the straight by Makdanife, she didn’t turn it up and surged again to just miss out on the win when second to the Waller horse. Back in trip, hard fit and in form.
No idea what to do with 3 Makdanife (Bet Now: $3.70). He was dreadful two back behind Outraged at the Gold Coast (Metro) before backing up a week later over 2400m at Eagle Farm where Stewart gave the gelding a 12/10 steer and finished best in a driving go to win. He’s hard to trust given he can turn it up on occasion, but a repeat effort of last start will see him hard to beat once again.
I’m always wary of Waller runners on the seven day back up so with that in mind, respecting 2 Cormac (Bet Now: $8.50). Not sure the race shape was to his liking last Saturday at Doomben but was sound enough in defeat without being great behind stablemate Lord Gododdin. Think up to 2200m will really suit and hopefully this doesn’t turn into a sit/sprint.
Race 3. (13:03) Dave Hickey Handicap 1600m
1 Profit (Bet Now: $1.90) looks the one to beat. Good win on debut over 1200m before stepping up to 1400m here two weeks ago where he was really well supported late and despite being challenged in the straight, he showed good ticker when it counted and kicked strongly to win. Off what I’ve seen to date, plus breeding, 1600m should be fine and happy to be in his corner.
2 Guntantes (Bet Now: $3.00) ran second to Profit in the race mentioned above from two weeks ago and I thought Jimmy Orman gave him every chance near the speed and he tried hard, but was no match for Profit. The big key here and why he’ll likely be popular is that he gets a 5kg weight pull on Profit here and I think if the button is pressed early, he should get the lead and comfortably.
If she’s big odds again, I could have something small each way on 7 Epicurious (Bet Now: $12.00). This girl is bursting to win a race and would be a good thing in a maiden. She contested the Profit race from two weeks ago here where she looked to be bolting at the top of the straight but couldn’t quite finish the race off, settling for third. Definite threat despite a query at the trip.
Race 4. (13:38) Mount Franklin Plate (Class 3) 1600m
7 Italia Bella (Bet Now: $4.80) should be hard fit for Stuart Kendrick. Was really keen on her chances when she raced over 1400m at the Sunny Coast last time but was a bit tardy to begin then given a dig in the ribs by Jim Byrne, which left her without petrol tickets the final 100m when pipped by Gregory. Like her up to the mile. Just hope she can jump clean and settle just off the speed.
Surely the smoke will eventually turn to fire with 6 Dreamtimer (Bet Now: $3.70). This mare for Kevin Kemp has been well supported at her past three without winning, but her runs have had merit to them. Not sure the seven day back up suited her a fortnight back over 1400m here behind Sienna Rose, so I want to be forgiving of that run and her efforts prior will ensure she takes beating.
Up to the mile should suit the Chris Waller trained 9 Tatcee (Bet Now: $8.00). She had trialled up well prior to resuming over 1350m at Ipswich where she was back in the run but found the line well enough when fourth to Pleased, beaten just under three lengths in a tidy resumption. 1600m on the bigger track should really suit her and her form from the Winter does read well.
Race 5. (14:13) Jim Beam Handicap (70) 1000m
8 Jagged Edge (Bet Now: $2.70) looks extremely hard to beat here for the Stuart Kendrick stable. This three year old resumed against his own age at this track/distance three weeks ago when doing work in the run from the wide gate and just couldn’t quite finish it off when a close up fourth to Go Deep. If he can get better luck this time around, with improvement condition wise from the resumption, he’ll take some beating.
9 Pizonie (Bet Now: $4.20) is a son of Eurozone for the Tony Gollan stable that resumes. This four year old hasn’t raced since Ipswich Cup Day in a 3YO race where he was hard in the market but after a decent and long-ish prep, he was probably at the end of it so a forgive run I think behind Spirit’s Choice. Recent trial was quite good and does no work from the gate.
5 Wirnpa (Bet Now: $7.50) is the very interesting runner. The Hulbert stable trains this gelding, who was backed with real confidence last time out over 900m at the Gold Coast (Metro) but got squeezed at the start, conceding several lengths, which sealed his fate. In the end, his effort to get as close as he did was enormous. Subsequent trial was good. Just needs to jump clean.
Race 6. (14:48) Canadian Club Handicap (75) 1835m
1800m is a little query with 2 Trevelyan (Bet Now: $2.25) but ability wise, I think he’s the best horse in the race. He was three weeks between runs when racing over the mile here a fortnight back where he loomed to win and was building the revs nicely, but he just couldn’t quite finish it off when second to Reckless Choice. Either he ran out of condition, or the mile saw him right out. This will tell us either way.
Couldn’t back 9 Miss Shanti (Bet Now: $7.50) to win with borrowed money but concede she’s racing well despite the lack of wins. She ran over this track/distance a fortnight ago and I thought Fradd gave the mare a 12/10 steer and did everything bar win, but she was nabbed near the peg by Picaro. She’ll run her usual honest race…but personally, I couldn’t touch her to win.
5 Polemic (Bet Now: $10.00) is suited back up in trip. Won at this distance two back at the Gold Coast (Metro) before stepping back to the mile where he didn’t have the zip in the legs but was sound in defeat behind Reckless Choice. If this becomes a sit/sprint, I think he will struggle, but if it’s a truly run 1800m contest, off the Gold Coast win, I think he comes right into play.
Race 7. (15:27) Coca Cola Handicap (0MW) 1400m
3 Enterprise Prince (Bet Now: $2.80) is a Mick Lakey trained gelding who is absolutely flying at the moment. Won two on the bounce prior to racing at Doomben last Saturday where nothing went right for him at all and you could make a case he should have fought the finish out alongside Langhro instead of running third. 1400m on the bigger track, the set up of his win the start prior, should see him take beating.
Stepping up to 1400m should suit 4 Mail Escort (Bet Now: $7.00). Ran on well two back at the Gold Coast (Metro) behind Langhro before going to the 1200m here a fortnight ago where he got back and found the line strongly when third to Constant Flight. Racing as if further will suit, which is what he gets here. Been a little while since he has won but he gets a chance here.
5 Le Mattan (Bet Now: $9.00) has always showed talent for Brian Smith but consistency has been his downfall so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes here because I thought he was very impressive when resuming with a win at the Gold Coast, sitting off a good speed before being presented wider and finishing best to score. Normally a bit flat second up before bouncing back third up, so that’s the query, but hard to ignore the resumption.
Race 8. (16:07) Makers Mark Handicap 1835m
1800m should be ideal for 9 Reckless Choice (Bet Now: $3.90), who looks to have returned in good order. He ran over the mile here a fortnight back where had to carry the big weight but class came to the fore when it mattered and he was much too good for his rivals. Gets really good weight relief this time around, has upside and he’s racing as if the step up in trip will suit.
5 Looks Like Elvis (Bet Now: $2.35) is racing in a real purple patch of form at the moment for the Bryan Dais stable, winning his past two, the latest coming over this track/distance three weeks ago where he had the soft run behind the speed before getting clear air in the straight and powering away late. Tricky gate, but he looks one of the leading contenders.
8 Morendi (Bet Now: $23.00) is working up to something positive. He got held up for a few strides in the Kubis race from two weeks ago here and that sealed his fate given he’s a momentum horse and he can’t sprint when asked. If he can get clear air from the outset, out to an ideal trip, I think he’ll run a very cheeky race at likely decent odds. Knockout chance for sure.
Race 9. (16:47) Cascade Handicap (85) 1200m
3 Cadogan (Bet Now: $10.00) finds a really winnable race. The Edmonds camp trains this gelding, who was disappointing fresh behind Epic Girl before going to this track/distance in an open handicap two weeks ago and fought on very strongly in defeat behind Scallopini. That form reads much better than anything else engaged here and third up, he should be ready fitness wise.
Back to 1200m looks the big tick for 5 Constant Flight (Bet Now: $3.50) winner over 1200m at Doomben two back before racing over 1400m here where he seemed to every chance and ran well, but just didn’t see the trip out when fourth. Back to 1200m, senior jock on, looks to be a bit of speed engaged, he can sit off it and launch at them late. Though I will say he’s too short to bet at the moment.
Up to 1200m should suit 7 Cabeirian (Bet Now: $8.50). Landed some bets when winning first up at the Gold Coast (Metro) before coming back to 1000m here when back and finding the line well enough behind Takes Time in a somewhat blanket finish. Like him up to 1200m and with a likely good tempo on the cards, can see him sitting off it and being strong late.
