A nine race card has been assembled for Eagle Farm on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out seven metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:30) Mekka Races 26 September (c6) 1835m
5 Champagne Aunty (Bet Now: $1.40) looks the most obvious and really, only has to handle the seven day back up to be winning. Took on a weaker field at this track/distance last Saturday and did as she pleased from the front in bolting up. This race isn’t much harder and with a soft lead once again on the cards, she’s the one to beat.
3 Dick Whittington (Bet Now: $9.50) is the unknown here. Matty Smith trained former French galloper that did enough to my eye first up at Randwick behind Wairere Falls. Yes, he ran last, but the race shape was totally against him and he did parade like he would need the run. Placing him here, that tells me either it’s really good placement or he’s going no good and they’re trying to get a win away from Sydney.
1 Stardome (Bet Now: $9.00) has more upside than most and has the Waller polish. Resumed over the mile at Doomben four weeks ago and I thought closed off his race well from near last in the run behind in form mare Willo Titto. Whether he needs one more or not, not sure, but watch the market and if it’s solid for him, jump on.
Race 2. (12:05) Racecourse Village (bm72) 2206m
1 Sciconic (Bet Now: $4.00) hasn’t been too bad in a couple of runs in Queensland for Team Freedman. Latest run was over 1800m here three weeks ago when close up behind Sokudo, beaten just over a length. Tick over trial on Monday was strong and he is a proven performer at this trip, so he’s hard to beat.
2 Top Order (Bet Now: $5.00) is two weeks between runs after racing at Doomben. He got back to near last in the run and was never really a winning threat but liked the way he finished his race off behind London Banker. Been up a while but it is hard to knock the way he’s racing at the moment.
6 Steel Pier (Bet Now: $7.00) should appreciate the rise to 2200m. Tony Gollan trained gelding that has had a couple of runs back from a break. Latest run came over 1800m here three weeks ago where he just looked like he needed the run under the belt. Gets to a more suitable trip and has upside to come.
Race 3. (12:42) Mount Franklin Plate (c3) 1200m
6 Undeniable (Bet Now: $4.80) on top in a tricky race for the Mares. Matty Smith trained mare that is on the quick back up after racing at Hawkesbury last Tuesday. Can make a little case to say that with clear air, she wins instead of a close up third, just getting held up at a vital stage. Gets in really well after the claim, gate one, Blinkers on, she’ll do me.
3 Jubai Pride (Bet Now: $2.50) looks one of the hardest to beat. John Gilmore and his stable runners don’t have a bad record here and Jaden Lloyd is the form apprentice in Brisbane, so the set up is there for this horse, who has the Eloquently form, which is very strong. Leading contender.
10 Wicked Wench (Bet Now: $7.50) has done little wrong since joining Barry Lockwood. Narrow second to Princess Tenko here two back before going to Doomben when a close up fourth behind Tramonto. The stable can improve a tried horse and they are definitely doing that with this mare.
Race 4. (13:18) Brc Membership (rs1mw) 1400m
Hard to get away from 2 Rock Amore (Bet Now: $2.10). Lovely front running steer from Leah Kilner saw him lead throughout to win at this track/distance three weeks ago, beating Samurai, who won last Saturday, so the form has been franked, and this race, as a whole, looks weaker IMO.
3 Vinco (Bet Now: $4.60) should be suited up to 1400m for Tony Gollan. He was kept pretty safe in betting when resuming over 1200m here three weeks back and for mine, he just paraded like he needed the run and that is how it panned out behind Triple Ace. Fitter and up in trip, he can bounce back.
1 Exclusive (Bet Now: $9.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Stephen Bennett, he now finds himself with Lee Freedman and we’ve already seen the gun trainer make his mark in Queensland. This horse hasn’t raced since a down the track effort in the Ramornie at Grafton so clearly this is an easier assignment. Watch the market.
Race 5. (13:57) Sky Racing Plate (c3) 1200m
The market will be fascinating with 9 Whozyadeeler (Bet Now: $2.35). Either he confirms what most think, and that he’s very good. Or he needs the run. I’m thinking it’s the former because he does have a bit of brilliance about him and is proven at the track, plus his two trials to get ready have been excellent. Not sure I want to dive into even money, but can’t tip against him.
3 McCovey Cove (Bet Now: $2.60) is racing really well at the moment for the Vandyke camp and is a key chance. Ran over 1400m here last time out and for mine just got too far back in the run. Did make up ground, but was never really a winning threat. Much better suited at 1200m and can bounce back hard.
2 Kavak (Bet Now: $4.60) should be suited up to 1200m for Chris Munce. He was several weeks between runs when racing at Doomben two weeks ago. Attempted to lead throughout and gave a pretty good kick from the front but just felt the pinch late when third to Tramonto. Like him up in trip and has upside to come.
Race 6. (14:37) Ctry Music Weekend 10-11/9 Hcp 1400m
Hard to get away from 1 Release The Beans (Bet Now: $1.85) for Rob Heathcoate. Bit of dominance about his win at Doomben two weeks ago. Sat on speed throughout and when clicked up by Dittman, away he went and he drew clear to win well. Harder here and just creeping up in relative weights, but he’s very genuine and proven at the track.
6 Queen’s Pier (Bet Now: $8.50) is a daughter of Pierro for Tony Gollan that let punters down badly on debut at Doomben. Tongue tie went on for Ipswich next start and she bounced back with a strong win in good time. If she can naturally improve off that, she’s a leading contender.
5 Finsceal (Bet Now: $8.00) should appreciate the rise to 1400m. Both career outings have come at 1200m. Won well on debut at the Sunny Coast before racing here three weeks back. She was one of the first off the bit but stuck on okay. Interesting the ear muffs are on, so not penning her.
Race 7. (15:17) Xxxx Dry (bm78) 1600m
4 Word For Word (Bet Now: $5.00) certainly has the quality to be around the mark. Chris Waller trained mare that ran here last time out. Just took a little too long to wind into her work but she was good late and through the line. Getting towards peak fitness and is a proven Saturday performer.
3 Seeingisbelieving (Bet Now: $6.00) should love the rise to the mile. Paraded like he needed the run when resuming at Doomben and ran accordingly, but wasn’t too bad late in the piece behind the very much in form At Witz End. Fitter and up in trip, down a bit in grade/depth, he appeals.
1 Sir Barnabus (Bet Now: $20.00) is a key threat for mine at a price. Far from disgraced two back over the mile in the Rocky Cup. Then came back to 1400m and was quite good from the back behind Emerald Kingdom. If he’s within range 400m out, he’s certainly going to be dangerous.
Race 8. (15:57) Tab Venue Mode (rs0mw) 1000m
5 Je Suis Belle (Bet Now: $5.00) has returned in good order for Mark Currie. Good resumption behind the very much in form Shooting For Gold, then raced at over 1200m here when somewhat tardy away but was good late when third to Triple Ace. With a clean getaway, she can win this.
11 So Clever (Bet Now: $2.25) is a John Moore trained lightly raced five year old that is showing good promise. Big tick for mine is getting back to 1000m. Last couple have come at 1200m and he has run well, but just hasn’t attacked the line. That’s why back to 1000m I like, hard fit and in form.
Hard to knock the way 2 Boblee (Bet Now: $9.00) is racing at the moment for David Vandyke. Over a month between runs since finishing best in a small field to win on his home track at the Sunny Coast. Tick over trial win on July 27 was solid, but still has fresh legs, so watch the market.
Race 9. (16:33) Spring Carn. On Sale Now-bm90 1000m
5 Jule’s Spirit (Bet Now: $6.00) is a beauty for John Shelton and each way, don’t think you can go wrong backing this gelding. Comes here with fresh legs, a few weeks between runs since knuckling down strongly to win the James Kirby on Grafton Cup Day. Gets in well after the claim, no work from the draw, genuine…each way all day for me.
9 Le Palmier (Bet Now: $3.40) is a talented animal for Tony Gollan that resumes. He hasn’t raced since May 15 at Doomben when down the track and looking a tired horse behind Gee Tee Tee. Fresh is best for him, he’s trialled well leading in and is a two time winner at Eagle Farm. He’ll be strong late and is a key threat.
6 Desert Man (Bet Now: $11.00) will give a really good sight from the front. He did that at Doomben last time but couldn’t quite see it out when fourth to Shooting For Gold. Back to 1000m is a big tick, he’ll likely lead this field up and give a big kick. Last 100m-200m will be his acid test.
