21/7/2018 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Doomben, Tattersall’s Mile day

Blacktype racing returns to Doomben this Saturday where it is Tatts Mile Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out half a metre for the entire circuit.

Nothing race so I’ll go with a nothing horse in the shape of 6 Mornington (Bet Now: $6.00). To be frank, he’s done bugger all since coming to Australia, but gee whiz he finds such a thin race and if he’s ever going to win, he gets his chance. 2400-2000 last time was the negative and he didn’t have the zip on the bog behind Skytrek. Up to 2200m is ideal and he should be out of trouble on speed.

3 Denbern (Bet Now: $3.10) comes through the Skytrek race here a fortnight ago. Just found the bog track a bit too much and couldn’t dash when required behind the Barry Lockwood stayer. Unknown at 2200m, but on firmer footing, and given the lack of depth engaged, he definitely has the ability to go close.

4 Explosive One (Bet Now: $9.50) started long odds in the Skytrek here two weeks back and she bounced back to some positive form with a closing fourth, beaten around four lengths but far from disgraced. She’ll be much better on top of the ground and will only be fourth up here so she’s got the upside to figure in the finish.

3 Miss Quaintly (Bet Now: $2.00) looks a great bet for mine. David Vandyke trains this filly, who debuted with a pretty strong win over 1000m at the Sunny Coast before stepping up to the 1350m here on the bog where she was wide throughout yet kept finding the line to run second to Soaring Heart. Reckon the mile will suit her, as will firmer footing.

13 Tatcee (Bet Now: $17.00) is a daughter of Foxwedge for Chris Waller who scored a sharp win on debut at Beaudesert before going to the Soaring Heart race here where she was one of many not suited by the slow tempo. She gives the impression as if the mile will be ideal for her and will be another better suited on top of the ground.

12 Shijin (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Scott Morrisey trained filly who is two weeks between runs since breaking through over 1400m on her home track at the Gold Coast where she led all the way under Luke Dittman, finding plenty late in the straight when challenged. She’s got the hard 1400m runs under the belt so the mile, you’d think, would be no issue and maps okay.

This looks a lovely race for 3 Tumbler (Bet Now: $1.95). They’ve tried to stretch her out to 1200-1350 in stronger races but I think her best chance of winning races is fast run 1000m races. Looked to have her chance last time out in the Healy but was beaten by a beauty in Spright. No horse of that class here…wish it was 1000m, but I think she’ll be okay at 1200m against this level.

Ben Currie has really changed the career of 1 Amanaat (Bet Now: $2.90). When trained in Victoria, he was just going through the motions pretty much but since joining Currie, the horse has won eight of ten starts, including the Weetwood. No public trials, but I’m sure he’s had a jump out or two leading up to his resumption.

6 Courtza King (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Tony Gollan trained gelding who maintained his decent first up record when resuming at this track/distance a fortnight back and just missing out on the win when second to Apoloboom. Goes well second up also and has more upside than Apoloboom, so confident he turns the tables there and he should get a nice sit off a likely genuine tempo.

Happy to give 7 Cedarwood (Bet Now: $4.20) another look. Was on him at odds when racing at this track/distance a fortnight back and I thought his effort was very good, closing off with purpose behind the hard odds on pop Hallelujah Boy. Gets weight relief and drops a fair bit in depth, plus should be hard fit now.

12 Pressway (Bet Now: $3.60) is the interesting runner. Was keen on him last Saturday over 1400m at the Sunny Coast and to my eye, I thought he had his chance when a narrow third to Dapper One. To the eye, he didn’t run the 1400m out, but he did chase the leader and was left a sitting shot. 51.5kg is perfect…gate 18 isn’t.

5 Duke Of Christophe (Bet Now: $15.00) is a Brian Smith trained gelding who resumed over 1400m at the Sunny Coast three weeks ago where he got well off the pace in the run ad while he never looked likely, his final 200m was pretty good I thought behind impressive winner Shogun Sun. Has run well second up and I think up to the mile will suit.

3 Tabbing (Bet Now: $3.90) was a horse who’d struggle to see out 1000m once upon a time when racing in SA, and for a short period early on under the care of Steve O’Dea, but the horse seems to be relaxing much better now and is running out his races quite strongly, as we saw last Wednesday at Ipswich when leading throughout and bolting up. Confident he measures up.

9 Ignite The Light (Bet Now: $3.30) is a Tony Gollan trained gelding who is going quite well at the moment but just can’t quite crack it for a win. Attempted to lead all the way over 1200m at Rockhampton last time and looked home but was pipped right on the peg by Jay Jay. Good record here and is a two time track/distance winner.

Lindsay Hatch has 8 Desert Cowboy (Bet Now: $12.00) is going well. Came with a well timed run to win two back over 1000m at Ipswich before racing over 1050m here where he worked home well late in the piece behind impressive winner Frequendly. He’s a query at 1200m, but with a cold ride from the wide gate, he’ll go close.

You just have to go with 10 Natch (Bet Now: $2.80) don’t you. This gelding has really turned the corner since joining the Tony Gollan team, being really impressive at his past two, bolting up at Toowoomba before being even more impressive at Ipswich a couple of Wednesdays back. Has to do it in town now but I’m confident he can.

7 Oriental Runner (Bet Now: $2.80) is the interesting one. Comes up to Doomben from Warwick Farm for Gary Nearle in search of a confidence boost I would assume because he has been below his best in three runs back from a spell, the latest at Canterbury when a narrow third to Argent D’Or. Odds on chance if he brought his best. He’s a threat, but I couldn’t back him.

6 Prioritise (Bet Now: $11.00) is a couple of weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where I thought young Jackson Murphy rode a shocker on the gelding. Made all the wrongs and while I doubt he would have won, convinced he should have placed. Should get clear air from the wide gate and we know he’s good enough to beat these.

You’d think only bad luck will beat 3 Winter Bride (Bet Now: $2.00), who has had an outstanding prep for the Toby Edmonds team. She raced three weeks back at the Sunny Coast where she looked a good thing on paper and ran right up to those expectations with a commanding performance. Seems to race even better at Doomben and is just weighted to win it.

8 Miss Exfactor (Bet Now: $4.20) is a filly racing in super form for Tony Gollan. Put together a couple of outstanding wins to kick off the prep prior to racing over 1050m here a fortnight back where she was wide no cover on speed and did a great job to get as close as she did when third to Shesees Everything. Draws much better this time and will be out of trouble on speed.

11 Divine Messenger (Bet Now: $19.00) was a real eye catcher on Ipswich Cup Day behind Envy Of All before going to the Winter Bride race at the Sunny Coast where she didn’t look entirely happy on the wet track. Back on firmer footing and from a good draw, she can certainly bounce back…though I will say turning the tables is unlikely.

2 Scallopini (Bet Now: $3.40) was racing okay but needed a confidence boost so the O’Dea team sent him to the Ipswich midweeks on July 4 and despite being pushed right out by Hammersley, the three year old showed his class and got the job done. He’s got blacktype potential, so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes in town again.

14 Fox Force Five (Bet Now: $16.00) for me. Liam Birchley trains this mare, who hasn’t raced since June 13 when racing over 1200m at Toowoomba where she got a mile back but finished off strongly to run second to noted speedster Crusher. She is a mare who does tend to race best on the fresh side and fresh at 1350m tells me there is intent.

11 Rhyming (Bet Now: $11.00) is a hard mare to follow and trust but I reckon she can run a bold race at odds. Resumed over 1200m at Rockhampton where she settled near the speed and tried hard but just ran out of puff late in the piece when third to Ekklestone. She is a second up winner and if they go silly in front, she’ll be strong late.

I think the old boy 1 Religify (Bet Now: $8.00) can bounce back. Was on him when he resumed in the Eye Liner at Ipswich but the market said he had no chance and ran accordingly, finishing down the track behind I’m A Rippa. Great record at the Doomben mile, will be up on speed…just wants a dry surface. Weather will be the key to his chances.

6 Princess Posh (Bet Now: $4.20) deserves a crack at some blacktype. This mare is racing in near career best form for Kris Lees, winning two of her last three. Placed at 1400m two back before racing at the 1350m here on the bog where she really attacked the line late to grab another in form mare Manaya on the peg. Unknown at the mile, but on the minimum and should get a sweet run.

Rob Heathcoate has done a remarkable job with 8 Ruling Dynasty (Bet Now: $8.50), with the horse winning two on end and is attacking the line with real purpose. Won over the Sunny Coast mile before backing up a week later at this track/distance and finishing best to win in the last couple of strides. Has to be included given the way he’s going.

LONG SHOT: Race One Number 6 Mornington
