The Sydney Autumn Carnival winds down this Saturday at Randwick where it is All Aged Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres from the 600m-Winning Post; Out four metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:00) TAB Highway Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
Happy to give 10 Delivered (Bet Now: $14.00) another look. Had no luck two back in the Wagga Qualifier for the Country Championship prior to going to Benalla where he pulled up with excuses. Has been freshened up and won a trial at Wagga in impressive fashion. Has Highway form around Don’t Give A Damn and Suncraze. Good enough for me.
9 Majestic Pedrille (Bet Now: $13.00) is a handy mare for the Mark Schmetzer team who has been racing quite well this time in without winning. Looked the winner for the most part last time out at Newcastle but just couldn’t quite see it out when a narrow third to Sojournist. I think she will be much better with cover and a bunny to chase.
Third up, 8 Newtown Is Calling (Bet Now: $17.00) should be close to peak fitness. He was hard in betting when sitting on speed last time out at Goulburn but just tired late when sixth to Northern River. That was 1400m, so back to six furlongs is okay. Just needs to find luck from the tricky gate but looks a threat on his best form.
Race 2. (12:35) APN Outdoor Handicap (85) 1200m
3 Tessera (Bet Now: $9.50) is a talented Godolphin gelding that resumes for the James Cummings team. He hasn’t raced since around this time last year where he was tested during the Brisbane Winter Carnival and tried hard but just couldn’t quite measure up for the most part. Been given a good break and has trialled well for his return.
11 In Times Of War (Bet Now: $6.50) on top, just. Chris Waller trains this mare, who has been very frustrating to follow as a punter, with just two wins from 16 outings. Resumed over 1100m at the Warwick Farm midweeks where she was far from disgraced behind the above average Trekking. More depth here, but tries hard and likes racing at Randwick.
7 Anatola (Bet Now: $6.50) is a daughter of More Than Ready that resumes for the Mark Newnham yard. She can be a hit and miss mare at times but I reckon she has been trained up to run a beauty fresh. She has won both trials leading into her resumption, did it easily both times and ran good time relative to the respective mornings. Hard to beat.
Race 3. (13:10) Hall Mark Stakes 1200m
Never thought I’d say that 2 Dothraki (Bet Now: $2.70) is the most consistent horse in a race but here we are and he is indeed that. No idea what the stable have done with him this prep but gee he is racing well. Got the Maurice McCarten win via the Stewards Room two back before a gutsy second to Spright in the Star Kingdom. I think he’s the safe option.
7 Firsthand (Bet Now: $6.50) is a talented son of Star Witness that resumes for Team Hawkes. This bloke is a quality animal on his day and at his best, he’s certainly up to beating these. On the form guide it’ll say he hasn’t trialled, but he did jump out last Friday at Flemington and to my eye went pretty well. Likes Randwick and a good fresh horse.
If 1 Takedown (Bet Now: $13.00) is to reach Group l level again, he has to be going close to beating these. Outclassed in the TJ Smith last time out but as we know, that was a red hot field and probably at his age, he’s looking for further. This is the weakest race he has contested for some time and 60kg is no issue.
Race 4. (13:45) Frank Packer Plate 2000m
Happy to give 8 Primitivo (Bet Now: $6.50) another chance. Was liking his chances in the Tulloch and the punters agreed, backing him into second fav for the race but unfortunately he was caught wide no cover for the trip and couldn’t come on at all behind Levendi, and of course that form was franked in the Derby. Provided he gets better luck, I think he’ll run a beauty.
1 Tangled (Bet Now: $4.80) comes back to the ten furlongs after contesting the Derby a fortnight ago and I thought his run in defeat was enormous. Got a mile back in the run and didn’t have much luck in the straight but once eventually clear, he finished off his raec quite well to run third to Levendi. Should take some beating this time around.
5 Higher Ground (Bet Now: $7.00) is the horse on the up and looks loaded with talent. Took on the older horses last Wednesday at Warwick Farm and though the margin wasn’t great, the manner in which he got the job done was very impressive, knuckling down very strongly the final furlong. He’ll eat up 2000m and looks a live threat.
Race 5. (14:20) J H B Carr Stakes 1400m
1 Frolic (Bet Now: $19.00) is an Edward O’Rourke trained filly who was excellent two weeks ago in the PJ Bell, doing an excellent job from the back against the track bias behind Houtzen, and that form held up in the Arrowfield last Saturday with Catchy bolting up. Looking for further, which she gets, and the depth here isn’t as strong.
4 So Far Sokool (Bet Now: $4.20) is an Archie Alexander trained filly who did come over to Australia with the Thousand Guineas in mind but it all came up too soon for her. Been given the spell and her efforts this time in have been outstanding. Loved the way she let down to win the Bendigo Guineas and won with arrogance and class. Confident she can measure up.
3 One More Honey (Bet Now: $46.00) is a John Thompson trained filly who is four weeks between runs since contesting the Darby Munro where she got back and finished off okay again without really threatening behind I Am Excited. Think she is just finding them too sharp at six furlongs so the rise to 1400m is perfect.
Race 6. (14:55) Champagne Stakes 1600m
Very keen on 5 Not A Single Cent (Bet Now: $8.00 FAT ODDS). It was a tough watch if you were on in the Sires two weeks ago. Just had no luck in the straight when appearing to be bolting and it was a definite hard luck tale behind El Dorado Dreaming. He’ll eat up the mile no problem and has that sense of timing about him.
2 Long Leaf (Bet Now: $8.00 FAT ODDS) is another I’m not sure about. Thought McEvoy gave the horse every chance to win the Sires but after looming to win 250m out, he just plugged away and was okay without being great when fourth to El Dorado Dreaming. He has the quality/brilliance…will he get a strong mile? Not sure.
12 El Dorado Dreaming (Bet Now: $9.50 FAT ODDS) is the complete unknown. She started $101+ to win the Sires, so on one hand, you have to doubt the form of the race. But on the other hand, she defied the track pattern for the afternoon and was one of the wins of the day. I’ll be siding with the latter and thinking she can repeat the dose.
Race 7. (15:35) All Aged Stakes 1400
If 10 Trapeze Artist (Bet Now: $2.20) turns up with his best form, he’ll be beating this field up quite comfortably. It was just a world class win in the TJ a fortnight back when sitting wide throughout yet making the best sprinter in Australia, Redzel, look second rate in spanking them. Can only see improvement off that and three year olds do have a fab record in the race.
1 Le Romain (Bet Now: $8.50) has come back in outstanding order for the Kris Lees team. Closed off well fresh in the Galaxy before going to the TJ where I thought he ran a ripper in defeat behind Trapeze Artist, closing off with real purpose. 1400m third up looks an ideal set up and he does love racing at Randwick.
I think back to 1400m will suit 8 Tom Melbourne (Bet Now: $10.00). Thought he did a great job in defeat in the Doncaster. Just pulled too hard in the run due to not getting cover and that left him gassed at the end. If he can relax here and get 1400m, he’s certainly explosive enough to go close…winning is another matter.
Race 8. (16:15) JRA Plate 2000m
16 Nettoyer (Bet Now: $8.50) clearly on top for me. Looked outclassed in the Coolmore Legacy last Saturday but despite that, gee I thought she ran well behind Alizee and did clock some of the fastest late splits of the race.Back to the track/distance where she won like Phar Lap in the Winter, and any give in the track will help her chances.
6 Interlocuter (Bet Now: $7.00) should appreciate the rise to ten furlongs. He comes through the Doncaster Prelude where he had the suck run behind the speed and when he got the gap, he looked a serious chance but he didn’t quite finish it off behind Cellarman. He’s racing as if he wants 2000m+ and he gets it here. Interesting runner.
10 Cool Chap (Bet Now: $7.50) seems rather rejuvenated now he’s in the care of the Hayes/Dabernig team. He ran a beauty in the Blamey behind Humidor then proved it was no fluke with a gutsy sixth to Happy Clapper in the Doncaster, who of course franked the form in the Queen Elizabeth. He’ll have no trouble with 2000m and has upside.
Race 9. (16:55) Royal Randwick 100 Handicap (100) 1400m
7 Osborne Bulls (Bet Now: $2.20) looks the good thing of the program. He’s a very promising horse for James Cummings and Godolphin who could reach any level really, even Group l level. Ran over 1400m at Rosehill three weeks back where Avdulla gave the gelding a 12/10 and once he got off the rail and into clear air out wide, he won with arrogance. Looks better suited at Randwick.
8 Black On Gold (Bet Now: $14.00) is the very interesting runner. Quality middle distance horse that resumes for Chris Waller after a pretty solid Spring/Summer prep where he won a couple of races, including his resumption. The key to him is a dry track so if the weather is clear, he comes right into play and his two trials leading in have been quite good.
I think 12 Collateral (Bet Now: $34.00) is the big watch. He is a quality animal that resumes for the Bjorn Baker team after a somewhat mixed Spring prep. Nearly pulled off a mini plunge here first up at the track/distance before two average runs on firm ground, something he gates. If we get a drop of rain, he comes right into play and for mine is a must for exotics.
