Eight races will be run and won at Morphettville this Saturday where it is Irwin Stakes Day, an important lead up to both the Goodwood and Robert Sangster. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out eleven metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out seven metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:01) UBET Handicap 1050m
2 More Bricks (Bet Now: $3.80) for Darren Weir. Heavily backed when debuting with a narrow but impressive win at the Bool before going to the Gold Rush at Bendigo where he had no luck at all in a tough watch behind Thrillster. Bugger all depth to this field here, and provided he gets clear running, I think he’ll just about win.
1 Really Swish (Bet Now: $2.40) is a three start maiden for the Corstens camp but you could make a case he should have won both runs this time in. Just missed out on picking up Music Bay first up on the Parks track before going to the Gold Rush at Bendigo where the bob of the head didn’t go his way when second to Thrillster. Hard to beat.
4 Ice Ghost (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Bradbury’s Luck gelding that is on debut for the Gordon Richards team. This bloke tiralled up a storm in September and looked one of the best youngsters in SA. Didn’t race, tipped out, and trialled well a few weeks back behind Music Bay. Very keen to see what he does here.
Race 2. (13:36) John C Harris 70th Birthday Handicap 1200m
On first glance, I wasn’t sure what to make of the run of 2 Whispering Brook (Bet Now: $2.00) in the Manihi a fortnight back. Yes, beaten as a $1.65 fav, but to be fair she was only beaten a long neck and they did come home in 33.54. And her pattern when racing in WA is that she could pull out a below par second up outing. Stewards Report said she had her tongue over the bit so clear excuses. Expecting a hard third up bounce back.
3 Sudden Wealth (Bet Now: $3.50) a definite threat in a ripping race. Will Clarken trains this mare, who was unwanted in betting when resuming in the Manihi Classic where she got back in the run but weaved her way through the field and savaged the line to just miss out on picking up Concealer. Good second up record and at 1200m is ideally suited.
1 Concealer (Bet Now: $6.50) was somewhat of a surprise winner in the Manihi but you can out it down to a ripping on speed ride from Jamie Kah, who controlled things beautifully in front and rightfully dashed clear to hang on and win. 1200m is a different pain barrier but she has the runs on the board.
Race 3. (14:11) John Young Handicap (75) 2042m
2 Gladstone (Bet Now: $15.00) has had a couple of runs for the Clinton McDonald team and looks to be liking life at Caulfield. Okay resumption at Bendigo behind Savaheat before going to Sandown where he was a close up third to Sunday Prey. Think he wants further, which he gets here, plus he has the class to go close here for sure.
10 Lipstick Lover (Bet Now: $3.00) does look hard to beat but gee I think she’s short enough at $3 and shorter. Gave them a caning over 1800m here last time out, but she beat nothing that day. I say nothing but compared to what she faces here, it was nothing. But she is a mare in ripping form and does have a turn of foot. Just has to tick the 2000m box.
16 Star Wars (Bet Now: $51.00) is a son of Starcraft for the Grant Young team who ran over the 2150m at Oakbank during the Easter weekend here he was near the sped throughout and looked to travel well but he’s a real one batter and he didn’t have the turn of foot to overhaul them when third to Antipas. Back onto a bigger track, he should run well.
Race 4. (14:46) Evright Handicap (75) 1600m
8 Moghul Empire (Bet Now: $2.00) is a beauty for the Will Clarken team. Two for two since being freshened up and he was absolutely slapped in betting when sitting on speed and proving far too good for his rivals under the lights at the Valley. That was a hard run though, so how much petrol is left is the unknown, but hard to overlook the way he is going.
4 Enki (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Gordon Richards trained gelding who is racing well at the moment. He ran over the mile here a fortnight back and tried hard but was no match late for Rising Hope. I think there is a bit more depth to this field this time around, but he draws well, hard fit and is in ripping form. Main threat to the fav.
9 Danouli (Bet Now: $23.00) could represent a bit of value here. First two runs this time in were outstanding prior to racing over the 1400m at Naracoorte where he was an alarming drifter in betting and ran accordingly behind proven city performer All Bar Two. Gets right down in the weights this time and up to the mile suits. He can surprise for sure.
Race 5. (15:26) Redelva Stakes 1100m
I think each way, 4 Port Vale (Bet Now: $14.00) can run a ripper. This Stuart Gower trained youngster hasn’t raced since March 3 at this track/distance when starting big odds and bolting up for a most impressive win. there is a bit to like about the way he goes about it, he’s the unknown, has residual fitness…I’ll take a chance.
2 Holy Blade (Bet Now: $4.00) has the form on the board and should take some beating here. He ran over 1000m at Bendigo a fortnight back where he was wide no cover for the trip yet found plenty late when challenged and clung on to score a tough but gritty and impressive win. More depth here, but hard to knock.
9 Vahana (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Mick Minervini trained filly who has had two runs back from a break. Close up second to Beautiful Bee on the Parks track before running second to Fancy Rumble over the 1050m here a fortnight ago. Should get a lovely run from the gate and being third up, she should be at peak fitness.
Race 6. (16:06) R N Irwin Stakes 1200m
Don’t think they’ll be beating 7 Viddora (Bet Now: $2.35), probably running second to In Her Time as the best sprinting mare in Australia. She had a fabulous Spring/Summer, highlighted of course by her maiden major win in the Winterbottom before spanking them in the Magic Millions Sprint. Trialled up brilliantly a couple of weeks back and her work on Tuesday was first class. She’s ready to go.
9 Dainty Tess (Bet Now: $11.00) is an absolute beauty for the Dan Morton and I’m glad to see her away from WA and tested against some high class types. Resumed a fortnight back at Ascot in the Charleson Classic and proved too good for her rivals. She has produced some of the fastest late splits ever record in WA racing history, so she has the late speed to go close.
4 Lord Aspen (Bet Now: $27.00) is a talented galloper for the Mick Huxtable team, who resumed in the Manihi a fortnight back and to my eye he should have finished much closer when having not much luck in the straight behind Concealer. He is a bomb when produced second up and is better suited at 1200m to my eye.
Race 7. (16:46) Schweppervescence Stakes 1800m
I think the turn of foot 6 Harmattan (Bet Now: $4.60) has will come to the fore here. The worry is that she is doing all this in her first prep but so far so good. Loomed to win the Adrian Knox a fortnight back at Randwick and loomed to win but just couldn’t quite finish it off when a narrow fourth to Luvaluva. Back to 1800m and back in depth, hard to beat.
9 Inspirante (Bet Now: $5.50) is a really interesting filly. Looks an ideal candidate for the Oaks, but just whether or not she has the zip in the legs to beat these is the issue. Spanked them last time out at the Bool but didn’t smash the clock and beat nothing. They are the negatives, but she just has so much upside.
2 Pleasuring (Bet Now: $15.00) is the class runner of the field and should take some beating. She has been freshened up since dominating them during the Tassie Carnival, winning the Strutt in impressive fashion before bolting up in the Tassie Oaks. She does have residual fitness and the runs on the board, so she has to go in.
Race 8. (17:25) Bradley Painting Handicap (70) 1100m
8 Via Balciano (Bet Now: $4.20) is the unknown. High quality four year old for Lloyd Kennewell that is first up here after an outstanding opening prep to the career in the Spring/Summer where he won two of four. Has looked quite good in a couple of trials leading in and for mine he’ll be forward enough to run well fresh.
4 Rock Status (Bet Now: $11.00) is a David Jolly trained gelding who is on the seven day back up after racing here last Saturday over the 1050m here where he got a mile back in the run but finished off quite nicely in the piece behind the quality sprinting mare Desert Lashes. Up to 1100m looks ideal and should be strong late.
11 Mr Liberty (Bet Now: $13.00) has had two runs back from a spell for the Nick Smart team. Resumed with a close up fourth at Sandown behind recent Bendigo winner Holy Blade before racing a few weeks back at Oakbank where he was an alarming drifter in betting and ran accordingly behind Ascendance. If you go on his Sandown run, he’s in the game for sure.
