The Parks track at Morphettville will play host to a nine race card on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres from the 1000m-Winning Post; Out five metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (13:01) Adelaide Galvanising Hcp 1000m
Want to give 3 Great Leveller (Bet Now: $4.80) another chance. Was keen on him when he debuted here two weeks ago, and the market support was strong. Just think he was a bit too new to the caper and his racing manners weren’t 100% so want to be forgiving of that run. Hopefully he’ll learn from that and off the trial, he can bounce back for sure.
2 State Of Class (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Paul Rocke trained youngster that won that race mentioned above from two weeks ago and there was good merit to the win. Led throughout and though challenged strongly in the straight, he kicked on and was too good. More depth this time around, but will be hard to beat if he finds the front again.
4 Koruto (Bet Now: $4.60) is a son of Written Tycoon for Phillip Stokes that is on debut. This youngster trialled a couple of weeks ago at Murray Bridge where he showed really good early toe to lead the jump out most of the way before being grabbed late but was under a nice hold. I think watch the market with him, because he seems one that will tighten into $3.50, perhaps shorter, or ease to $6+.
Race 2. (13:36) Furphy (rs0mw) 1000m
8 Dark Sentry (Bet Now: $27.00) is still a maiden for Gordon Richards but that elusive win will come this prep. Whether it’s here or not, not too sure. But she has trialled very well on a couple of occasions in readiness for the resumption, the latest seeing her run second to Master Of Zerprise at Oakbank under a good hold. Keen to see how she goes.
5 Fabulous Flipper (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Brian Mueller trained mare that has done nothing wrong in three runs back from a break. Won her first two starts in impressive fashion before racing on the course proper here three weeks ago when on speed and tried hard, but was clearly no match for a Stakes class mare I feel in Lakhani Rose. That form reads very well for this.
7 Good Luck Chuck (Bet Now: $18.00) isn’t the most reliable horse going around when it comes to greeting the judge first. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago and worked home well from off the pace when fourth to Lord Varys, who had good form prior, so that’s not the worst form line for this kind of race. Just needs to show more early speed.
Race 3. (14:16) Tab (bm58) 1400m
4 A Knight In Paris (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Will Clarken trained son of Camelot who ran over 1300m here two weeks back when a notable drifter late in betting and while the market got it right, he did finish off strongly from the back and was a real eye catcher. Think 1600m+ is when he’ll come into his own, but think he has enough class to beat these.
5 Gougers (Bet Now: $3.30) is over a year between wins but John Hyam has this gelding going so well. Ran over 1300m here last two weeks ago when very unlucky not to win, getting badly held up when wanting to get clear. Eventually got clear and just missed out on picking up Cotillion. With clear air, he’ll take some beating.
Back up in trip looks a tick for 9 Sir Johnson (Bet Now: $14.00), who is racing well, but can’t quite crack it for a win. Was good in defeat two back at Kingscote over 1360m before coming back to 1200m at Clare and tried hard, looming to win, but Archway To Heaven was too good on the line. Back up in trip, sitting off a good speed, he’s a knockout chance.
Race 4. (14:56) 36 South Beef Hcp (62) 1250m
1 Alaskan Jade (Bet Now: $4.80) doesn’t have the best of racing patterns, but if they go silly in front here, she could well have last look. Got into a decent enough speed a few weeks ago in the Rizski race, three wide with cover, and worked home well enough behind the Ken Sweeney galloper. I reckon ridden completely cold off a fast speed, she can win.
5 Sand Cat (Bet Now: $10.00) has been a ripping mare for Emma Hubbard for a few seasons and she finds a winnable metro race to measure up in. Comes to town in winning form after chasing strongly and really knuckling down when required to win at Clare. Did she beat much? No, but she’s tough, is against her own sex and will give her all.
6 Fergie (Bet Now: $10.00) is a Sue Jaensch trained mare that was impressive two back in leading throughout at Bordertown before racing over 1300m here a fortnight back when doing a bit of work in the run from a tricky gate and battled away well without threatening. This looks more her go and hopefully can sit on speed and prove hard to run down.
Race 5. (15:36) Chad Hancock Foundation (bm78) 2250m
Something very small each way on 11 Blinky O’Reilly (Bet Now: $20.00) for Grant Young, who is getting ready for the upcoming Oakbank Carnival. He is a handy enough galloper that is stepping out to a staying trip for the first time this prep and has been going okay. Kept up to the mark with a jumps trial at Oakbank and with only 51kg on his back, think he’ll run a positive race at big odds.
4 Classic Weiwei (Bet Now: $1.50) looks hard to beat…could I back him at odds on? 100% no. Ran in the Port Lincoln Cup last start when well backed and after sitting on speed, he tried hard and stuck to the task well when third to Dexter You Devil, but I thought he had every chance. Odds on pops in Adelaide at these Saturday meetings have been going awful lately, so while he’s the one on form…couldn’t touch at odds on.
5 Flow Meter (Bet Now: $9.00) is an absolute beauty for John Hickmott. He’s having start 132 and is still racing at quite a good level. He ran on Adelaide Cup Day behind War Tiger and while he was beaten six lengths, those from the back had no chance, including this guy. Hopefully the tempo is more genuine this time around and up in trip should be okay.
Race 6. (16:21) Aami Hcp (62) 1250m
4 High Mist (Bet Now: $3.80) is bursting to win a race and he gets his chance here. Has had two runs for Will Clarken. Didn’t handle the Kingscote track at all first up before going to the Port Lincoln where he did work in the run yet chimed in as the winner 200m out but couldn’t quite finish it off when second to Diplomatic Measure. Hard fit now and should prove hard to beat.
3 Two Odd Sox (Bet Now: $3.20) is racing really well at the moment for Shayne Cahill. Ran over 1200m on the course proper last Monday on Adelaide Cup where he was off the speed in a slowly run affair won the leader and it went sub 34 for the final 600m, so those behind were always going to struggle. If the tempo is more genuine this time around, he can take this out.
2 Oh Mo (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Sam Burford trained gelding who has been given a little freshen up., Hasn’t raced since Feb 15 at Gawler when fifth to the in form Shamino in what was a hot race and he did try hard but just lacked the class. Tick over trial at Gawler was good and this looks more his level so a win wouldn’t totally shock at all.
Race 7. (17:01) Adelaide Festival 2-16/5 Hcp 1550m
5 Puissance Dusoleil (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to have SA Oaks written all over her and despite remaining at 1550m, I think she’ll win again. Loved her resumption over 1400m, which made her, I thought, a good thing two weeks ago at this track/distance and despite being the first off the bit, she was clearly strongest on the line. She wants further, but I think she has enough class to get her home.
7 Robe Bay (Bet Now: $6.00) is a Peter Hardacre trained filly that is first up and likely on the SA Oaks path. Hasn’t raced since January 11 at Murray Bridge where I thought she was ridden really poorly. Very negative steer and given no hope. Been given the break and thought her recent jumpout was a good hitout for this assignment.
12 Sowpods (Bet Now: $18.00) is gradually getting better with each outing. Comes through the Puissance Dusoleil race from a fortnight back at this track/distance and he tried hard on speed, but just didn’t have the turn of foot or finale to go with Puissance Dusoleil late, but was far from disgraced in running third. Hard fit now, he’ll run well again.
Race 8. (17:36) Fleurieu Milk Company (rs2ly) 1300m
If she runs up to her jumpouts, I think 11 Really Discreet (Bet Now: $8.50) is the best on the program. Phillip Stokes trains this filly, who resumes after a Spring prep where she took on some very good fillies. She didn’t win and was well held for the most part, but was far from disgraced. Loved the change up speed in her Murray Bridge jumpout win and she looks ready to rock and roll.
2 Zalmona (Bet Now: $7.50) is racing well but can’t quite crack it for a win. Ran over 1400m here two weeks ago when near the speed throughout and doing work but battled away good in defeat when third to Shrouded In Mist. He’s just not quite attacking the line with purpose, so with that 1400m run under the belt, back to 1300m should suit.
6 Handsome Return (Bet Now: $7.00) should love the rise to 1300m. Resumed over 1050m on Adelaide Cup Day and while he ran last in the field of seven, he was only beaten a couple of lengths and the late splits were quite good. Getting Todd Pannell back on is a big tick, he gets a good speed in front and should be strong at the end.
Race 9. (18:15) M&j Chickens (bm78) 1550m
Finally 11 Cazabillie (Bet Now: $3.70) is in a winnable race. Needed the run first up but her last couple of outings, think she has been really poorly placed. Don’t think she’s a Stakes class mare so want to forget the two runs at that level. This looks much more her go and if she can land on speed without doing too much work, she’ll prove hard to beat.
7 Roselli Sting (Bet Now: $11.00) is going well for Gordon Richards. Comes through the France’s Boy race on Adelaide Cup Day where he had the good run off the speed and was there to win, but the sit/sprint set up just didn’t suit him, especially considering he had to lump 59.5kg. He’s going well and I think will go close to winning.
Up to 1550m should be ideal for the Michael Hickmott trained 1 Lieder (Bet Now: $23.00). This dirt track specialist resumed over 1400m here two weeks ago in a race which was pretty much a barrier trial for him but really liked the way he finished his race off behind Shrouded In Mist. Like him up to 1550m…maybe needs one more run, but has the quality to be around the mark.
