A bumper ten race card has been set down for Ascot this Saturday, with a couple of races transferred from the meeting last Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Ted Van Heemst Stakes π°: View the odds for the Ted Van Heemst Stakes
Race 1. (15:07) CROWN TOWERS PLATE 1100m
See no reason why 1 Mindarie (Bet Now: $2.60) can’t win again. The close relation to the well performed stablemate Specialism won on debut two weeks ago over 1000m here and I thought she was pretty good in leading throughout after doing a bit of work early to find the front. Got the cheap furlong down the side and that allowed her to be strong at the end. Happy to be in her corner.
2 American Choice (Bet Now: $3.70) is a Simon Miller trained filly that has placed in both career outings, the latest coming two weeks ago over 1000m when near the speed and trying very hard to get past Mindarie, but that filly packed too many punches near the line and was too good. Has the hard race fitness under the belt and in the right stable.
I’m interested in 7 Sunnysilk (Bet Now: $4.20), a daughter of Snippetson for the David Harrison stable that is on debut. She’s had two trials in readiness for start one, the latest coming just under three weeks ago at Lark Hill over 950m when an impressive winner in reasonable time. Stable should always be respected with their juveniles, so watch the market.
Race 2. (15:47) WESTSPEED PLATINUM HCP 1600m
I reckon 5 Over There (Bet Now: $4.60) is flying for Neville Parnham and is a decent bet here. Liked the way she found the line first up over 1200m here behind Supreme Force before stepping up to 1300m at Pinjarra and charged home from the back to run fourth to Lucky Linda Lulu. Up to the mile looks a big tick for her and she finds such a winnable race.
Back up to the mile should suit the Ashley Maley trained 3 Arnie’s Boy (Bet Now: $3.40), who ran in the Grandstand Cup at Pinjarra over 1500m last time where he was back in the run off a fast speed before getting clear air out wide and letting down hard, just missing out on the win when second to Al Di La. Back up in trip should suit and is a key chance.
2 Zephyr Queen (Bet Now: $9.50) is a huge query at the mile, but one thing going for her here is the fact she should get a very good time of it on speed. That wasn’t the case three weeks ago over 1400m here when copping serious heat on speed and tiring late. The distance is the knock, but form prior wasn’t too bad for this.
Race 3. (16:27) ALL FLAGS SIGNS & BANNERS HCP 1800m
Better luck and Pike back on can make sure 1 Royal Command (Bet Now: $2.70) bounces back. Comes through the Prince Turbo race from three weeks ago where Chris Graham had him wide no cover for the trip and that run saw him drop out and tire to finish down the track. The win start prior was very good and can win for sure with Pike back on.
3 Arctic Stream (Bet Now: $3.80) is a Ross Price trained gelding that is two weeks between runs after winning impressively over the mile here last time out, sitting last in the run before getting the back of Midnight Sky, finishing hard out wide and got up near the peg to beat that in form mare. Harder here, but up in trip is a big tick and has winning form.
4 Superior Smile (Bet Now: $3.40) has placed in both runs back from a spell and third up at 1800m looks a good set up. Ran over 1500m here three weeks ago where he had the right run in transit just behind the pace and loomed large to win but had no answers for the finale produced by Western Temple. Up to 1800m, with the claim, he’s a leading chance.
Race 4. (17:07) STEPHEN RAKICH BIRTHDAY HCP 1000m
I find 1 Kemono (Bet Now: $11.00) a fascinating runner. Japanese runner that has had a couple of homes in Australia but is now with Lindsey Smith and his record this season has been unbelievable. It will be remarkable if he can turn this guy around but he’s done it with several horses. Two trials have been nothing to jump up and down about but I think he has to be a market/yard watch because his best is clearly good enough.
5 Dance Music (Bet Now: $1.95) is the interesting one. She is three weeks between runs for the Simon Miller team after contesting the Jungle Mist where I thought Parnham gave her every chance. Had the box seat, got the dream inside run, dashed, hit the front, but was nabbed near the line by Electric Light. Hard to beat I think, but couldn’t back her to win.
6 Undisclosed (Bet Now: $5.00) has come back in super order for Colin Webster. Sharp first up winner before racing over 1100m here three weeks ago when back off the speed before Turner eased her wider on the turn and she finished off strongly, just missing out on the win when a narrow third to Guns Of Navarrone. Back to 1000m, hard fit, leading chance.
Race 5. (18:24) SCHWEPPES HCP 1200m
5 This’ll Testya (Bet Now: $1.09) looks a rising star but she has to keep stepping up to the plate. Her two starts/wins to start her career have been stunning, the latest coming two weeks ago over 1100m here when bolting up and the ratings boys and girls think she can go on to better things. Has to keep winning to ensure that happens, and confident she will.
Back up to 1200m is a big tick for the Colin Webster trained 6 Zenaze (Bet Now: $12.00), who was an impressive winner at this track/distance two back before stepping back to 1100m behind This’ll Testya and ran well without troubling the winner. Like him back up in trip. I think he can close the margin…not sure he beats the mare though.
4 Halusa (Bet Now: $35.00) is a lightly raced nine year old who is blessed with good ability and I think can run a positive race fresh. Hasn’t raced since July 10 at Belmont when placing over 1200m behind Lord Ludlow in a race which did look weaker than this. Two trials leading in have been good to the eye and would be hard to beat if this race wasn’t so strong.
Race 6. (19:03) AMELIA PARK PLATE 1200m
6 Laverrod (Bet Now: $2.80) is still a maiden but I think that will change here. Pushed Massimo all the way first up in the Placid Ark before going to the Lee Steere where he got pulling hard early and that took away his finale when third. Back to 1200m I like and Mia Dolce should ensure a genuine tempo. He gets his chance to win one.
Have to give respect to 7 Levitate (Bet Now: $2.80) for Simon Miller, who is putting together a very good record in a short space of time. Ran over 1000m here three weeks ago when back off a slow speed and crabbed a bit on the turn but balanced up and charged to the line to just miss, but would have won in another stride. Up to 1200m, Pike on, he’s a clear threat.
1 Mia Dolce (Bet Now: $16.00) is an absolute beauty for the Jayce Buckley who steps up to 1200m. Ran over 1000m here three weeks ago when on speed and looked to control things very well, kicking on strongly in the straight but was only pipped near the peg. Is a three time winner at 1200m, albeit in weaker races than this, so will be interesting to see how she goes.
Race 7. (19:42) IRON JACK HCP 1400m
3 Not To Be Mist (Bet Now: $1.60) is flying for Adam Durrant and should take some beating here. He was massive in winning the Platinum Series Final three weeks ago given he was back in the run and then Pike decided to take off three and four wide, surging to be on speed and despite that hard burn early, he kept finding under Pike and was too good, just. If that hasn’t busted him, he’s a leading chance.
6 Mankind (Bet Now: $5.50) up to 1400m is interesting ploy. Ran over this trip several runs ago here when copping pressure on speed and tiring late. Last couple of runs have come over the sprint trips he’s done a reasonable job without winning. Back up to 1400m, with the claim from gate one, he could be a knockout chance.
1 Heart Starter (Bet Now: $10.00) is a big improver back in depth for the Chris Gangemi team. He comes through the Peters Stakes when leading and running along at a decent clip but couldn’t finish it off behind Mississippi Delta, who ran so well in the Kingston Town, so that form just reads so well for this and is hard to beat off that.
Race 8. (20:20) TED VAN HEEMST STAKES 2100m
5 Regal Power (Bet Now: $1.90) clearly for me. The Railway winner looks like he’s crying out for more ground and he gets it here. Comes through the Kingston Town where he wasn’t suited at all by the slow tempo but loved the way he found the line late in the piece. Small field suits, doesn’t have to give away so much head start, and if he holds his form, should be winning.
3 Star Exhibit (Bet Now: $10.00) is on target for the Perth Cup I feel still. Have to put a line through his Kingston Town run where he was back in the run and four wide no cover for the trip, so a total forgive for mine. Railway run was a beauty and out to a staying trip for the first time this prep, I think he can sharply bounce back here.
1 Ambitious (Bet Now: $12.00) is clearly the big watch here. Formerly with Anthony Freedman, this former Japanese galloper is now with Lindsey Smith and his record with the tried horses is outstanding. This will be an achievement though if he was to go close to winning because his trials have been just fair, but he does have class on his side.
Race 9. (20:57) STARSTRUCK CLASSIC 1600m
Have to give 3 Electric Light (Bet Now: $2.60) another chance. This mare ran in the Jungle Dawn (1400m) two weeks ago and on face value, she was disappointing, but those in front absolutely walked and this mare was back last, having really no chance. Did a pretty good job to get as close as she did, and with a more genuine tempo here, I think she can bounce back.
5 Snowchino (Bet Now: $6.50) is a David Harrison trained mare that comes through the Jungle Dawn where she attempted to lead all the way and she got everything to suit, getting a really good time of it on speed, controlling things, and rightfully kicked on to only go down narrowly behind Beautiful Mind. I think with a bunny to chase, she’ll be better.
4 Like A Butterfly (Bet Now: $8.00) is a mare with good upside given she’s only second up here. She resumed in the Jungle Dawn where she sat up outside Snowchino on speed and that pair really controlled things to suit themselves. This mare eventually wore down Snowchino but couldn’t hold out Beautiful Mind. Think she gets a great run from the gate and up to the mile is a big tick.
Race 10. CROWN HCP 2200m
Looks pretty straight forward here with 3 Sentimental Gift (Bet Now: $2.20), who was three weeks between runs when racing over 2100m here a fortnight ago when back off the speed but Pike rode the patient race, getting splits nearer the inside and bursting through between runners for an impressive win. Extra 100m looks ideal and looks the one to beat.
6 British Bessy (Bet Now: $4.20) was confidently supported to beat Sentimental Gift in the race from a fortnight back and on face value, she was somewhat disappointing behind the Williams mare, but she did pull up with Abrasions post race, so there was an excuse for her. Form prior was good, so have to give her another chance.
10 Lavistarr (Bet Now: $11.00) is suited up in trip for Adam Durrant and will be strong at the end. She resumed over 1800m here back on November 20 when off the pace and taking an eternity to wind up, but did very late in the piece, then ran last Wednesday over 1800m and was solid enough in defeat from off the pace. She wants 2000m+, which she gets, and she comes into play if she gets a genuine tempo here.
