One of the best racehorses in the world, Winx, makes her long awaited return to the track this Saturday at Randwick in the feature, the Group ll Warwick Stakes (1400m), where she will start a long odds on favourite. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:00) : Moraitis Communications Handicap (83) 1400m:
Back Me: 3 Super Tycoon (Bet Now: $2.30) rises in grade but he deserves a crack at this level after putting together a nice little picket fence, including a spank job of his rivals three weeks back over 1350m at Rosehill, aided by a pearler from Glyn Schofield. The picket fence started at this track/distance, he is hard fit…ticks the boxes for me.
Big Danger: 1 Torgersen (Bet Now: $8.00) is a talented galloper that resumes for Chris Waller. He produced some really good runs during the Autumn Carnival, with a highlight being the second to Old North in the Tulloch. He has had a couple of trials to prepare for his Spring return and though his best is over further, he has the class.
Roughie: 4 Shadow Lord (Bet Now: $9.00) has been a bit frustrating to follow this time in. She ran at Rosehill three weeks back and didn’t show a great deal I thought behind Super Tycoon which followed an okay run at Stakes level behind Oxford Poet. Her recent record at Randwick is very good, so that could spark her…something needs to.
Race Two (12:35) : Randwick Mayors Cup (72) 2400m:
Back Me: 2 Lie Direct, (Bet Now: $2.70) despite the weight rise, looks the way to go. He was given an absolute peach of a steer from Deanne Panya to win here last time out, rolling along in front and giving nothing else a look. The weight rise and more pressure will be the issue, but now he has the winning feeling, he can go on with it.
Big Danger: 5 Major Major (Bet Now: $7.50) was tipped to run well against Lie Direct but he just couldn’t pick his feet up with the weight and bottomless surface. With a drying track here, he could be a real improver. Wouldn’t discount him at all.
Roughie: 3 Richard Of Yorke (Bet Now: $3.00) ran over 1900m at Canterbury last week and closed off pretty well I thought against the slow tempo behind Signposted. He will love the step up to 2400m and has enormous upside.
Race Three (13:10) : TAB Highway Plate (Class 3) 1600m:
Back Me: 11 Destined To Win (Bet Now: $13.00) was an eye catcher two back at Canterbury before racing here in a Highway where he was a beaten horse on the turn and plugged away by tearaway winner Snappy One. That Canterbury eye catcher was too good to dismiss and I think he’ll be a sharp improver on firmer ground, and the claim for Adkins helps.
Big Danger: 8 Grand Rouge (Bet Now: $4.40) is in really good form at the moment for Highway master Terry Robinson but he just can’t quite crack it for a win. Loomed to win at Rosehill but had a devil of a time to get past About Time and had to settle for a close up third. The Blinkers come off now and though a non winner beyond 1400m, he gives the impression he’ll handle it.
Roughie: 1 New Divide (Bet Now: $14.00) ran on a bottomless surface at Tamworth last Friday and I thought his effort was pretty tidy given he was very wide without cover for the entire trip yet still kept surging to run fourth. Steep rise in class now, but draws to get good three wide cover I suspect, and stable know when to bring them to town.
Race Four (13:45) : Primo Smallgoods Up And Coming Stakes 1300m:
Back Me: 3 Divine Prophet (Bet Now: $4.80) is a high quality youngster that is first up for Team Hawkes. He shows his class in the Autumn with an excellent third in the Champagne behind Prized Icon despite being very green. He has looked to trial well in returning and stable are in form after their success with Star Turn last Saturday.
Big Danger: The unknown here is the Victorian visitor 4 Derryn (Bet Now: $3.20). He resumed at Caulfield three weeks and produced a stunning turn of foot from near last to get the job done. The form has held up somewhat with Sword Of Light running well in the Quezette and Kentucky Miss placing in the San Domenico. If he brings his best, he’ll be right in the thick of the action.
Roughie: Godolphin had a couple of runners nominated for this race and have elected to go with 6 Kent (Bet Now: $17.00). He created a big impression in two runs during the Winter, being very unlucky first up at Newcastle before bolting up at Canterbury. Trial looked very good and I am expecting him to run a beauty.
Race Five (14:20) : Alpha Flight Services Silver Shadow Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: Hard to go against 5 Omei Sword (Bet Now: $2.40). She was one to watch for this time of the year after an eye catching Autumn prep. The trials have been nothing short of outstanding, especially the one on Monday at Rosehill, and I think there is a Group l in her this Spring. Clearly on top.
Big Danger: 4 Manaya (Bet Now: $4.00) is a real unknown because we just don’t know how good she is, but she did produce one of the wins of the Scone Carnival when charging home from an impossible position to win brilliantly. The form out of that race has been excellent with several winners and a couple of Stakes placegetters. Trials have been good and though this is a steep test, she just looks high class.
Roughie: 6 Quick Feet (Bet Now: $14.00) resumed in the Rosebud here a fortnight back and at the top of the straight she looked the one to beat, but the big weight and the wet track saw her wheels spin and she whacked away for fifth. She’ll take enormous benefit from that outing and the trial win prior was outstanding.
Race Six (15:00) : Bob Ingham Show County Quality 1200m:
Back Me: 4 Famous Seamus (Bet Now: $21.00) looks great value for mine here. Quite simply, he was awful during the Autumn, where he beat only 7 runners home out of a possible 45 in four runs. Scrap that IMO, because his Warwick Farm trial was very sharp where he ran second to a potential Group l winner in Impending. Not the greatest fresh record, but he loves racing at Randwick and the drying weather will certainly enhance her prospects.
Big Danger: 5 Le Romain (Bet Now: $3.70) really came of age in the Autumn, stunning the racing world with his win in the Randwick Guinas over $20m colt Press Statement before not running the distance out in the Rosehill Guineas. He has looked very sharp at the trials and all the stats say he should go very close here.
Roughie: Just even typing the name ‘Generalife’ sends a shiver up my spine. Gee 1 Generalife (Bet Now: $12.00) is a menace but when he is in the mood, he can be high class. Two trials to tune up for his return to racing have been pretty good and he does tend to save his best for Randwick, plus he has a solid fresh record.
Race Seven (15:40) : Warwick Stakes 1400m:
Back Me: The obvious is 6 Winx (Bet Now: $1.30), but I wouldn’t say she is a certainty because she is facing some classy opposition here. In saying that, she is the best Australia has to offer and is rated as one of the best in the world after an amazing Autumn. Her trials have been great and most notably, they have been very quick trials, so she’ll be forward enough to run well fresh. I wouldn’t use fitness as an excuse if she gets beat, but she just looks the one.
Big Danger: 7 Lucia Valentina (Bet Now: $6.00) is a high quality mare that resumes for Kris Lees. She only had two runs in the Autumn with Lees firmly having his eye on the Spring and a crack at the Cox Plate. In saying that, her two runs were outstanding, with the Queen Elizabeth spank job the clear highlight. Her trials leading in have been great and though a drying track is against her, her class will carry her a long way.
Roughie: 2 Hartnell (Bet Now: $14.00) was talked up as a possible retirement after an injury forced his Autumn prep to be cut short, but he is back now with an eye towards the Melbourne riches. I am sure whatever he does here he will improve on because he wasn’t asked to do a great deal in a recent trial here, but he has class and the firmer track will really suit.
Race Eight (16:20) : Forum Group Toy Show Quality 1300m:
Back Me: 6 Dixie Blossoms (Bet Now: $4.40) is the clear class runner engaged here. This high quality mare for Ron Quinton is first up after a very good first prep, with highlights being a win of Tsaritsa and a second in the Keith Nolan behind subsequent Group l winner Single Gaze. Loved her trial here a few weeks back and with luck in running, she will look the winner at some stage.
Big Danger: 4 Elle Lou (Bet Now: $4.40) is a mare who is already fully fit and up and about after putting together a good prep, highlighted by several wins. Has been freshened up and did look sharp in a trial here last week. Deserves blacktype, and if ever she is going to get it, this is the race.
Roughie: Bit surprised about the price for 3 Pearls (Bet Now: $6.50) given she is a quality mare. Reumes for Godolphin after an indifferent Autumn where nothing really went right. Has been given a good break and her trials leading in have been sharp IMO. Bit surprised to see her drift, because she’ll get a sweet trip from the gate and is a first up winner.
Race Nine (17:00) : Sydney Markets Foundation Handicap (85) 1000m:
Back Me: 3 Haptic (Bet Now: $3.00) creates plenty of interest here. Godolphin galloper that’s clearly Stakes class but hasn’t raced for nearly 12 months. Despite that stint, he has looked incredibly sharp at the trials, and has run time on both occasions. He will run a mighty race fresh.
Big Danger: 2 Southern Legend (Bet Now: $3.70) was believed to be heading to Hong Kong but he remains in Australia for now and will be a live chance here. He created a big impression in the Autumn, ending it with a brilliant win in the Darby Munro. He has looked very good at the trials and is expected to run a beauty.
Roughie: 11 Ross Of Man (Bet Now: $10.00) is the horse here with fitness and runs under the belt. She ran at Rosehill three weeks ago and closed off well I thought behind Magnajoy. Significantly more depth here, but she has the fitness edge and a lethal turn of foot, which can be used effectively here.
