A last ditch effort will be made by many horses to sneak into the field for the $6 Million Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) when they will battle it out in Wednesdays $200,000 Listed Jayco Bendigo Cup (2400m) with an excellent field assembled for the big race.
Race One: Schweppes Tonic Maiden 1100m
Back Me: Go Bossy Pants has trialled nicely leading up to this and drawing the fence is a big bonus at the 1100m start.
Don’t Back Me: Whispering Death will probably be well in the market thanks to the Hayes/Dunn factor, but he is a very plain horse.
Big Danger: Hermes loomed up to win first up but peaked late. Fitter, drawn well, hard to beat.
Roughie: Vapourise contested a very strong race at Caulfield on debut and drops back to a weak maiden.
Race Two: Pura Milk Maiden 1600m
Back Me: Going for value in Dollar Burn. Liked his last start effort and the step up to 1600m, as well as a bigger track will help him.
Don’t Back Me: Danzare was solid on debut but I think he is looking for further than this.
Big Danger: Vincente has gotten better with each run and he’ll love the 1600m based on his effort last start.
Roughie: Stratobeune didn’t have a great deal of luck last start. He can finish in the placings with luck.
Race Three: Bendigo Ford Maiden 1400m
Back Me: Clear looks a good thing here. Liked his first up run, he sort of was whacking away before picking up late, so he’ll love the 1400m.
Don’t Back Me: Brambles has the Moody/Nolen factor, but the trial back in May wasn’t flash.
Big Danger: Geeceegazza was outstanding in defeat at Seymour, where he settled last on a leaders track and worked home very well.
Roughie: Ladretto was unlucky on debut and from a better barrier, he can be in the finish.
Race Four: Myjet Aviation Handicap (78) 1400m
Back Me: Sparks Alight thrives on her home track and from the good barrier, she’ll go very close to winning.
Don’t Back Me: This is the easiest race Jessie’s Girl has contested for a long time, but she just isn’t racing well enough.
Big Danger: Inherited led and was only gunned down very late in a tight finish at Newcastle. Trialled very nicely at Cranbourne recently.
Roughie: Shysta is drawn well and can certainly fill a place if he gets some pace on up front.
Race Five: State Trustees Handicap (C1) 1000m
Back Me: If Ra Ikane is allowed to roll along in front, she’ll win. Just hope she isn’t held back to the field.
Don’t Back Me: Cash Bound is first up and looks well suited here, but I think he might need this.
Big Danger: Xian was luckless at Sale and will look to make amends here.
Roughie: Testawan was solid enough when resuming and has the services of Oliver to guide him home.
Race Six: Bendigo Handicap (68) 1300m
Back Me: Toned was very good at Cranbourne and Sabres came out and won at Geelong.
Don’t Back Me: Muchos Respectos had the race served on a platter last start. He won’t get that here.
Big Danger: Hold For Applause is suited over longer, but his recent trial suggests he is forward enough to run a race.
Roughie: One Of The Boys is dying to win a race and he does receive a lovely weight drop.
Race Seven: Yalumba Handicap (68) 2200m
Back Me: Kasane has put it together this prep and he can go on with it here as well.
Don’t Back Me: Balmoral had every chance at Warnambool. You’d be brave to back up here.
Big Danger: Kolokotronis didn’t handle the bog track last start. Given time to get over that, firmer surface and Oliver rides.
Roughie: Magnetic East should have bolted in last start and he’ll appreciate the bigger surroundings of Bendigo.
Race Eight: Jayco Bendigo Cup 2400m
Back Me: Boom ‘N’ Zoom was brilliant in the Cranbourne Cup and expect improvement on that here.
Don’t Back Me: Tanby looked to have his chance last week at Geelong and I’m not sure if he can handle the quick back up.
Big Danger: Western Symbol is in Melbourne, and I think he is here 12 months too soon, but he was so dominant last start he has to be given his chance here.
Roughie: Innocent Lady was solid enough behind Dream Pedlar at Moonee Valley and anticipate a much better performance.
Race Nine: Centrebets Pick Your Own Field 1400m
Back Me: Nine Tales was very good first up when making ground near the fence at Caulfield, which wasn’t the place to be. Looks well placed here.
Don’t Back Me: Spirited Eagle did win last start, but he only just lasted. Big risk against this field.
Big Danger: Flat Chat might need this run too, but he does have class and Noonan jumps back on.
Roughie: Redhead Rage should get the perfect run from the barrier and prove to be a trifecta hope.
Race Ten: Eliza Park Handicap (78) 1100m
Back Me: Tasos ran a credible race behind Black Caviar at Caulfield and the obvious drop in grade helps.
Don’t Back Me: Sherpa is in winning form, but he hasn’t been beating much. Prepared to risk him from the awkward draw.
Big Danger: Albertique put in a rare shocker last start. Froggy back on top and a drop in distance should spark an improvement.
Roughie: Private Jeune was good at Moonee Valley and he is drawn to get the soft run for Oliver. He does have a good record at the track as well.
